LEGAL MANAGEMENT This is a 4-year course that offers the best preparatory degree program for law school, exposing early its students to various subjects in the legal profession. Students are trained to become legal practitioners, political analysts and human resource professionals or managers through activities incorporated in the curriculum. More importantly, students are exposed to case analysis, courtroom and government office tours for actual legal practice, moot courtroom activities inside the classroom and sponsored seminars and interviews with experienced legal practitioners to ensure quality legal management education in preparation for paralegal work. Graduates of this program have a high admission rate in the top law schools. SAN BEDA COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF LEGAL MANAGEMENT The Department of Legal Management envisions itself to be at the forefront of contributing to legal education in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region by training Bedan Legal Management Majors to be holistic professionals fully human, wholly Christian, and truly Filipino who are ready to respond to the challenges of a global business-legal environment. MISSION Guided by the Bedan values of Fides (Faith), Scientia (Knowledge), and Virtus (Virtue), the Department aims to realize its vision by providing Bedan Legal Management Majors with a learning environment that espouses the Benedictine core values of ora et labora, community, and the pursuit of peace; and a curriculum that bridges two professions: a career in business with a strong legal background. GENERAL OBJECTIVE The Program aims to produce competent graduates who are

well-versed in the basic principles and processes governing the Philippine legal system and the intricacies of law as applied to business; possessed with practical knowledge of basic management principles; adept in research, problem solving, and analysis; and prepared to face the demands of law school, and ultimately, those of the legal profession.

The Program also aims to develop the following qualities in all Legal Management graduates:

appreciation of ones uniqueness which translates into empathy and respect for others; honesty, fairness and professional competence;

creativity, developed analytical skills, independent-mindedness and selfexpression; open-mindedness and willingness to learn new things for constant selfimprovement; commitment to excellence; social responsibility, nationalism and global consciousness; and commitment to serve, lead, teach and be witnesses of Christ and the Catholic faith.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Bedan graduates of Bachelor of Science in Legal Management will possess the following competencies:

strong analytical and decision-making skills; sound legal writing and oral communication skills; proficiency in legal and factual research; ability to prepare basic legal documents; and ability to apply knowledge of management and organizational skills in the legal setting.

The Department of Legal Management is committed to


providing students with an understanding and appreciation of how the legal system works; providing a Benedictine education with emphasis on research, writing, technology literacy, and professionalism; evaluating curriculum and services on a regular basis and incorporate changes identified through that process; and engaging professors with outstanding practical experience and communication skills. Commercial Law
Intended to provide employment opportunities and at the same time be an ideal preparation for admission to the College of Law, the Commercial Law Program introduces students to the many facets of Philippine Law, substantive and procedural, with Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure, Labor and Social Legislation such as fields of concentration, complemented by basic subjects in Business Management designed to equip students with general principles of management and business policies. The program offers students in business as they are to undergo Legal Internship in their last term. In essence, Commercial Law approximates a paralegal academic program.

Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Legal Management (LMG)


The Commercial Law Department offers an academic degree in Bachelor of Science in Commerce, Major in Legal Management. This degree is a good preparation for the college of law and is, at the same time, intended to provide employment opportunities to the graduates. In addition, the Department offers commercial and tax subjects to accounting, commerce, and liacom students. Administrative Law (ADMIPRO) 3 units This is a major subject for legal management students. It covers the meaning, types, and powers of administrative agencies. Proceedings before administrative bodies as well basic legal doctrines about administrative agencies are studied. Pre-requisite: COMLAW2 / BUSILA2 Business and Income Taxation (BUCOTAX) 3 units This is a service subject for commerce students. It includes basic principles of taxation, income and business taxes. Students will have a working knowledge about the computation and application of these taxes. Pre-requisite: COMLAW1 / BUSILA1 Business Taxation (BUSITAX) 3 units This is an in-depth study of business taxation offered for accounting majors. Internal revenue taxes involved in the operation of a business or practice of profession, except income tax, are discussed. Pre-requisite: OBLICON Civil Law and Procedure (CIVIPRO) 3 units This is a major subject for legal management student. It includes both the substantive law on civil rights and obligations as well the procedural law for the enforcement of those rights through court action. Pre-requisite: COMLAW2 / BUSILA2

Constitutional Law (CONSLAW) 3 units This is a major subject for legal management students. It is a study of the three inherent powers of the state in relation to the rights of individuals in society. Students will be equipped with a working knowledge of the constitution. Pre-requisite: COMLAW2 / BUSILA2 Criminal Law and Procedure (CRIMPRO) 3 units This is a major subject for legal management students. Students will have knowledge of the basic principles of criminal law relating to definition of felonies and the circumstances which affect criminal liability. Basic knowledge of criminal procedure and on the rights of the accused are included. Pre-requisite: COMLAW2 / BUSILA2 Income Tax (INCOTAX) 3 units This is an in-depth study of income taxation offered to accounting majors. It covers internal revenue taxes which must be paid by a taxpayer who receives income, profits and gain from employment, business or trade. Pre-requisite: OBLICON Labor Law and Labor Relations (LABOREL) 3 units This is a major subject for legal management students. Labor standards, labor relations, and the procedures and administrative machineries in enforcing these laws are areas of study. Pre-requisite: COMLAW2 / BUSILA2 Legal Environment (LEGALEN) 3 units This is a subject intended for business management students. The theoretical foundation of the legal system and the various kinds of laws and regulations affecting business are covered. This subject serves as an input in deciding and planning business activity. Pre-requisite: COMLAW1/ BUSILA1 Legal Research and Documentation (PRACUM1) 3 units This is a course for legal management students where they are taught basic legal research and documentation. Students are trained in legal writing consisting of a legal memorandum and drafting common legal documents. Pre-requisite: CIVIPRO / CRIMPRO Negotiable Instruments Law (NEGOTIN) 3 units This is a study of the negotiable instruments law by accounting majors. Legal provisions on negotiable instruments are studied. The topic on documents of title is included. Pre-requisite: OBLICON Negotiable Instruments Law and Related Law (NEGPROC) 3 units

This is a major subject for legal management students which combines the law on negotiable instruments and the salient provisions of the central bank and general banking laws. Pre-requisite: COMLAW2 / BUSILA2 Obligations and Contracts (COMLAW1/BUSILA1) 3 units This is first law subject taken by commerce and liacom students. There are basic concepts and principles of law in general. An extended discussion on the law of obligations and the law on contracts are made. Partnership and Corporation (COMLAW2 / BUSILA2) 3 units This is the second law subject taken by commerce and liacom students. It involves the legal principles governing partnership and private corporation as business organizations. Pre-requisite: Comlaw1/Busila1 Practicum (PRACUM2) 3 units This is a practicum course for legal management students. They are placed for a period of 200 hours in selected law firms, business companies, or government agencies for an on-the-job training. At the end of their practicum, they are expected to present and defend a legal research paper. Pre-requisite: Pracum1 Sales, Agency and Bailments (SALESBA) 3 units This is a course that is offered to accounting majors where the principles, rights and obligations arising from a sales contract are tackled. Moreover, the various types of bailments used in business are covered. The students in this course are prepared to handle the business law portion of the CPA examination. Pre-requisite: OBLICON
