Gorgeous Geek Chapter LXXXIV: Another Option

Chapter LXXXIV: Another Option

So, Jin, said Mark, nudging Jin. The three friends were heading toward the elevator together. You've been talking to your girlfriend on the phone a lot lately. Jin blushed and said, It's not like that. She's six, said Rina, rolling her eyes at Mark. Mentally at least. Mark grinned at Rina. I want a girlfriend who has the mentality of a six-year-old too, but you don't see me talking about it. What is that supposed to mean? asked Rina, staring at Mark suspiciously. I'll leave it up to your imagination. Pedophile! Jin coughed and regained their attention. You know what really sucks... Having to hang out with Mark? asked Rina immediately. Mark tossed her an appalled look. No sex for three years? No, said Jin, scratching the back of his head. When my six-year-old girlfriend knows more about the world than I do... that's kind of sad. Stopping in front of the elevator and pressing the button, Mark thought about what Jin just said. From what he recalled, Jin said that his girlfriend was selfish and confident. From Jin's comment alone, Mark wondered whether his girlfriend acted the way she lookedmature and sexy. On the other hand, from what Mark knew of Jin, he wasn't aware of the real world. This was proven to be true when Jin didn't even know the basics of having to pay for room service out of his own pocket. You shouldn't think too much on it, said Rina to Jin quickly. I know, said Jin, nodding. Maybe you're on the wrong type of journey, Jin, said Mark, interrupting the two of them. Both Rina and Jin were amazed at Mark's words since it appeared he was talking about something irrelevant. I don't know, Jin. It's hard to believe you don't know who you are. Rina-sama and I have only known you for a few days and we know who you are. Jin blinked. To some extent. Jin turned to Rina. Really? You're pretty simple, said Rina, shrugging. Exactly. I don't think that's the problem, said Mark, entering the arrived elevator first. The other two immediately followed. A couple of buttons were turned on to indicate that they would be stopping at several floors. It's not an identity crisis you should worry about. You're Jin and I'm sure as many people over at your side of the country accepts you as you are as the rest of us here. Jin was touched. Mark... I have a feeling it's something else, said Mark, watching the elevator doors close. Like what? asked Rina, standing next to Jin instead of Mark. Good question, said Mark, thinking. Rina rolled her eyes. It's never a good question when someone states it is. Jin, are you sure you're not trying too hard to find something that's not there? asked Mark carefully to Jin. I'm not sure, said Jin admittedly. From the way I see it, said Mark, noticing that the elevator was stopping at

different floors to pick up more people. You're Jin so you tend to think for the sake of other people. You also think farther into the future than most teenagers your age and care more about long-term responsibilities. Suddenly, you realize that you have no idea what you want to do with your life and it has thrown your world into chaos. In other words, Mark paused and moved aside for a couple of boys to enter. Maybe it's in your head, Jin. I hate to say this, said Rina slowly. But Mark has a point. Jin sighed and said, So, you're saying that by being me, I am having a hard time dealing with my situation... while say... for other teenagers my age, they wouldn't be going through the same thing? Mark nodded. Yes, because they're not thinking of the same thing. They're not at your level, Jin. And now, I'm thinking of Fi again... What about her? asked Rina, lifting a brow. The way she acts and thinks, said Jin, shaking his head. It's at a level I can't even begin to understand. She's like an adult that is stuck in a fifteen-year-old body. She sees things farther than I can and she understands how everything in the world works, unlike me. Even her six-year-old self is able to grasp such complicated subjects. Actually, she's more similar to you than you thought, said Mark, smiling in a carefree manner. Rina and Jin were obviously clueless so Mark continued on, She has to deal with issues people of her age group don't have to, like you. I have so many conflicts within myself thanks to this, said Jin, sighing. I wonder what it must have been like for her. Jin lowered his eyes. I can't really ask her now that she's not herself. Seriously, said Rina, scowling. Both Mark and Jin were being too serious in this elevator for her comfort. You people need to take a chill pill. Look whose talking, said Mark, whistling. Rina rolled her eyes and turned to Jin. Don't you remember what I said to you the first day I met you? You are thinking way too much for someone so young. If you keep this up, you'll be more like an old fart than Mark. You mean, you, said Mark coolly. Ignoring that, said Rina, trying to give Jin an encouraging smile. Let's just try to do the best we can today in our respective matches. Jin was pumped up now. That's right! Leaving the elevator to head to the lobby, Jin noticed that by this time, everyone had found themselves a group to be in. It was natural for people to click and connect with others while being here by themselves. Of course, some people, like Mark on the first day, were here with friends already. Everyone were enjoying themselves before the next round and Jin was glad to see this. I wonder if that Group A bunch are done yet, said Mark, leaning against a wall. It should be Group B next, right? asked Jin, who was in between Mark and Rina. Are you in Group B, Jin? asked Mark curiously. Jin shook his head. I'm in Group C. You, Rina-sama? Rina shrugged. Group C, too. I'm in Group B, said Mark, frowning. I wonder how they set this up... Wait, said Jin, realizing this. He turned to Rina. Doesn't this mean we will be up against one another by the end of this block? I can't wait, said Rina, happy for once.

You can't wait? asked Jin, gaping. Rina-sama wants to beat you up in a video game, Jin, said Mark in a sing-sang voice. Yes, said Rina without denying it. She wrapped her arms in front of her chest and smirked. And you too, Mark. I will win you both and come out victorious in the end. Mark reached over Jin and patted Rina on the head. Keep telling yourself that, sweetheart. Rina pushed Jin aside and lashed at Mark, I'm not your pet! Hey Jin, said a couple of boys passing by. Jin greeted them back before they continued, You should see this epic match going on right now. Epic match? asked Jin, too interested. There's this one girl who is a genius Pitt player. No, no, that's wrong. She's a genius Snake player. The last guy interrupted the other two, No, if you've been following her, she's pretty damn good with a handful of characters. She always lets her opponent pick their character first before she chooses hers. She's quite versatile. Excuse me, said Mark, grinning. Jin and Rina shifted their attention to Mark. Which room is this genius Pitt player at right now? Do you know? After they told Mark the room number, he quickly searched for it on a map where all the rooms were located and went there on his own. Jin and Rina were too curious and followed him there. Unexpectedly, the room was so crowded that there were people standing outside the door and people sitting on the steps to watch the match. By the time Jin, Mark, and Rina pushed their way inside, the match was already over. The winning player only lost one stock for a three-stock battle. In the middle of all the applause, Jin noticed a disappointed expression on Mark's face. You were amazing! You completed destroyed him! What's your name? While a lot of people were surrounding the winner, Jin noticed that Mark left the room, making a quick excuse about getting ready for his match that was coming up. Rina scowled and muttered something about him dragging them here for nothing. However, Jin wondered why Mark wanted to come here in the first place and why he was like this. Thinking back, Jin remembered that Mark rushed here when those boys mentioned the genius Pitt player to them. There was only one person Jin could think of in which Mark wanted to meet above all else. It was then that everything clicked for Jin. After the crowd left the winner alone, the genius gamer went on her way quietly, out of the room and to the lobby. Jin told Rina that there was something he had to do so she should go ahead and save seats for three people for Mark's match. Rina lifted a brow. Three people? asked Rina suspiciously. Please, said Jin with a sweet smile. Rina rolled her eyes. Fine. Only if there are three left. Thanks, said Jin, leaving the room. Searching for her, Jin checked the cafeteria, the lobby, and the many gift stores. Before Jin decided to check the floors, he went out in the parking lot where he spotted her standing and staring at the sky nearby. It appeared to Jin that she was waiting for someone to pick her up. Nodding to himself, Jin told himself that this was for Mark and went over to her with a greeting. Up close, Jin met a depressing-looking girl or at least, that was the impression he got

from her. She was nearly as tall as Jezebelle, but not as thin. Moreover, she had straight blonde hair that reminded Jin of haystacks for some reason. She sported olive-colored pants and mud-colored shirt. In other words, she was the complete opposite of Jezebelle in the fashion sense. With piercing blue eyes, the girl observed Jin with a frown on her face. I know you, said she. You're the one who led that search party on that first day. Jin nodded happily. Yup. That was nice of you, she continued. They were unfair to the victim. I agree, said Jin quickly. Anyways, said the solemn girl, checking her watch. My ride should be here soon. You're not staying at the hotel? Too expensive. At such a practical girl, Jin laughed. It is pretty expensive, especially since you don't know how long you're going to stay for. I suppose, said the girl, paying more attention to the cars passing by than Jin. Jin decided that it was best to get to the point. Er... so... Charmaine, said the girl automatically. So, Charmaine, said Jin, smiling sweetly. Do you know anyone name Mark? I knew many named Mark. Jin scratched the back of his head. Mark Kim? I don't know people's last names, said Charmaine, tossing her hair back with a shake of her head. Er... said Jin, finding himself in a hard position. How do I describe him... I'm not sure of what your intentions are, said Charmaine, staring directly at Jin. She had such cold eyes. But if you are trying to hook me up with a friend of yours with this ruse, I already have a boyfriend. No, it's not that, said Jin, thinking. I think my friend knows you. That's not possible, said Charmaine quickly. I don't know anyone... anymore. Jin frowned. I'm sure you know some people. Besides my older brother, said Charmaine with eyes on the road. I don't know anyone else really. I'm sure you must have mistaken me for someone else. I'm sure us Caucasian girls must look the same to you Asians. At her words, Jin laughed. Sort of. Maybe I should call him, said Charmaine out loud, pulling out her cell phone. I know, said Jin loudly, stopping Charmaine from turning it on. Is it possible for you to watch Mark's match? I'm sure he'll be happy to see you there. Jin smiled sweetly at the surprised expression on Charmaine's face. And even if you don't know him, it'll be nice to watch other matches, right? We are going to face one another in the future. Charmaine lowered her eyes. I don't know about that. Please? asked Jin sweetly. Mark is a darn good Brawl player. Gazing into Jin's eyes, Charmaine released a long sigh and said, One second. Much to Jin's happiness, he listened to Charmaine explain to her brother on the phone about picking her up later. She was going to stay here a while longer. Once she was done, Jin grabbed her wrist and dragged her back inside the hotel. Charmaine nearly tripped several times, but Jin knew that this was worth it. Mark's match was going to start soon so he didn't want Charmaine to miss it. As for Charmaine, she didn't quite understand what was going on. For one thing, she was not a people person. During her stay here so far, she had only spoken to one person and that was for directions. Besides that, she kept to herself both before and after her

matches. It got to the point that people thought she couldn't speak so she didn't. Thanks to this, less people had been bothering her lately. After her wins, she would leave the hotel before she was swarmed with admirers and wait for her brother to pick her up. This was the first time that she spoke to someone for so long and listened to them. There was just something sincere about this young boy. Once Jin and Charmaine arrived at the door, Jin recognized the sound from inside and knew that the match had already started. Quickly, Jin went inside and noticed Rina from afar. Charmaine stayed behind Jin closely and avoided eye contact just in case people recognized her. At last, Jin and Charmaine arrived to where Rina was. She managed to save two extra seats. Thanking Rina quickly, they sat down and watched the match in silence. During the match, Jin either had his eyes on Mark's character Pikachu or at Charmaine. He wanted to see her reaction to Mark's playing. The result was a lot better than he expected. At first, Jin assumed that Charmaine would be impressed by Mark. That wasn't exactly the reaction he noticed on her face. She had one of disbelief, surprise, and awe at the same time. This was even more apparent when Mark barely managed to win against his hard opponent and shook hands. The moment he was done Mark was surrounded by female fans. He laughed and thanked them for their support. Rina and Jin decided to wait for Mark from a distance since they assumed this would happen. This usually happened when the winner was both talented and good-looking. Although Jin expected Charmaine to stay in the back with them, she actually made her way through the crowds to get to where Mark was. So what's your name? asked one of the girls. And do you have a girlfriend yet? Sorry, said Mark apologetically, grinning. I do. Don't be shy, said another girl. No, really, said Mark, amused. This was when Charmaine reached out and grabbed a hold of Mark's sleeve. Feeling a tug, Mark lowered his eyes and noticed the blonde girl next to him. The other girls were as surprised as Mark at the sight of such a gloomy girl taking claim to the carefree, cheerful Korean boy. Before they could say anything, Mark gaped and laughed. I don't know what to say, said Mark honestly. You caught me. Charmaine allowed a rare smile on her face. You're in trouble. Over with Jin and Rina, Rina gasped and asked, Are you serious, shota? Yes, said Jin, noticing Mark and Charmaine making their way over. She's the one. He doesn't even know how she looks like... so... He said it before, didn't he? asked Jin, waving at Mark to signal where they were. He would be able to find her without a voice or a face. Rina sighed. I saw him talk to her online before. I didn't think she would be so... serious-looking. She sounded so happy online. People aren't what they seem sometimes, said Jin, knowing that too well. Jin, Rina, said Mark, panting in front of them. Rina pouted when she noticed Mark holding onto Charmaine's hand so they wouldn't be separated. Thanks for watching and waiting for me. No problem, said Jin, beaming. He made me, said Rina bitterly, tossing Jin a look. I'm guessing you guys already know? asked Mark, grinning. Jin laughed. I told Rin-chan about Charmaine. Thanks man, said Mark, wrapping his free arm across Jin's shoulder. Can we talk elsewhere? asked Rina impatiently, indicating at the door.

Sure, said Jin and Mark in unison. Not long afterward, Jin and Rina had to go to separate rooms to play their matches. Mark watched Rina's while Charmaine watched Jin's. Even though Rina had an easy time with her opponent, Jin was having difficulty, even with his competitive side. By the end of a hard match, Jin knew that his level of playing skills was around this level, but he brushed that aside at the mention of dinner by the others. For dinner, since Jin got along with the kitchen staff, they agreed to allow him to use the hotel's kitchen to cook something for his friends when Jin asked them. The only catch was that Jin had to buy the meat himself so the group set out to the supermarket. Since Mark drove his university friends to the competition in his car, he did the same with his new friends. At the supermarket, Charmaine offered to push the cart while the other two would help Jin pick up a couple of other items besides the meat. So, said Rina, eying Charmaine. You're really her. Charmaine nodded. Rina couldn't believe her eyes. Just wondering. How do you know for sure that Mark is your boyfriend? You two have never met before and everything. What is this? asked Mark, lifting a brow at Rina. An investigation? No, said Rina, placing her hands on her hips. I want to make sure because if you two found the wrong person, it will be troublesome for us all. God, Rina, said Mark, smacking his forehead. Charmaine patted Mark on the arm before she said, I know his playing style and all the characters he plays. Also, he used the name MK for his characters. My boyfriend also uses MK for his name when he plays against me in the past. Happy now, Rina? asked Mark, sighing. Rina glanced away. I wanted to make sure! Tugging onto Mark's sleeve, Charmaine muttered, Why didn't you tell me you were coming? I wanted to surprise you, said Mark, grinning. I'm not good with surprises, said Charmaine softly, keeping her eyes on the ground. Oh, sorry, said Mark, clapping his hand together and bowing his head slightly. I won't ever do it again. I'm not upset, said Charmaine, stating that fact. Yeah? Charmaine sighed. You did something unnecessary and wasted a lot of time. I would have rather meet up with you on the first day. Good point, said Mark, looking away with an innocent look on her face. Happy at her picking on Mark, Rina smiled at Charmaine and said, Keep it up with your logic bombs. Logic bombs, said Charmaine carefully. What a bizarre saying. Mark burst out laughing and poked Rina in the shoulder. You heard that, Rina-sama? Oh, shut up, said Rina, looking around. Where's the shota? What is his name? asked Charmaine, keeping her voice low. His name is Jin Song, Charmaine, said Mark sweetly. Charmaine nodded. I will remember. Charmaine turned to Rina. You are Rina? Yes, said Rina quickly. I will remember that as well. Oh, found him, said Mark, laughing and rushing over to Jin, who was staring at the meat. What are you up to, my good buddy? I want to choose carefully, said Jin, concentrating on the pound of beef before

him. I want to make sure I get my worth out of this shopping trip and I want to make sure I got all the prices down correctly. I'm not used to Maryland's prices yet. Mark shook his head. You should listen to yourself, Jin. Er? You sound like a housewife, said Mark, snickering. Jin scratched the back of his head. Wow. Maybe. Maybe that's your purpose in life, Jin, said Mark, smirking. To work at home. That would be awesome, said Jin, gaping at Mark. I can play all the video games I want once the chores and everything else are done! Mark! said Rina, kicking Mark from behind. Stop giving him crazy ideas! What's so crazy about it? asked Mark, daring Rina to continue. Rina groaned and gave Jin a pitying look. You should aim to get a fine education, graduate with a degree, and work hard to make money. Why should you settle yourself into becoming a male housewife? Househusband, suggested Charmaine. That's only one way to tackle life though, said Mark, arching a brow at her. Jin can do whatever the hell he wants with his life without you interfering. Mark winked at Jin. Though I do suggest you going to a cheap college beforehand and deciding what major you want to tackle before you aim for a more prestigious university. At least, that's the route I took. Besides, I believe all the attention you receive in the first couple of years from your professors are much more important than a couple of thousands in dollars for the sake of showing off to the rest of the world. Are you calling me a show off? asked Rina, appalled. Well, said Mark, challenging Rina. Are you going to this expensive university for the sake of your education or for the sake of making yourself look better than everyone else? Rina was speechless. Let's be frank here. Most people who go to those well-known universities only chose that route for the sake of showing off to all their friends. Mark shook his head. For the few people who actually go there and know exactly what they're doing, I applaud those people. Too bad there are not enough of them around. Rina scowled. I don't see what's so wrong about me going to a university. There's nothing wrong except if you're doing it to show off. My parents want that! Not me! In that case, you should get yourself a backbone and rebel a little. It's not that easy! I already told you my story the other day! Mark shrugged. So what? You're just taking the easy way out. I... said Charmaine, joining in. I only graduated high school. What? asked Rina, whirling on Charmaine. How old are you anyways? I'm twenty-one, said Charmaine calmly. Are you taking a long break? asked Rina cautiously. Charmaine shook her head. I'm not going back to school. Interesting, said Mark, nudging Jin. Here's another way you can go about life. Like Mark, Jin was interested and said, What do you do instead, Charmaine? I decided back in high school that was I was no good at anything, said Charmaine with an almost sad expression on her face. I couldn't concentrate on my studies since I couldn't find anything that held my interest for long. Every day in school, I felt like I was wasting my life away. Charmaine shrugged. It was only when I played video games that I felt like I was alive and good at something. How do you live, then? asked Rina, shocked. Do you live with your parents?

No, said Charmaine, shaking her head. My brother and I travel from one tournament to the next across the country. We actually make enough money from those tournaments to pay for everything. Unbelievable, said Jin, astonished. You're good enough to actually win prize money for your gaming skills? Charmaine nodded. Yes. I practice a lot every day. Seriously, said Mark at the other two. I've played with her for years now. If there is such a thing as a video game genius, Charmaine is it. She's literally great at every video game she has her hands on. Man, and you have to pay those expensive fee just to play one another, said Rina, shaking her head. Despite that cost, you have enough money to travel and play at other tournaments. That sounds almost too romantic for comfort. It's not romantic, said Charmaine clearly. It's hard work. Some days, my brother and I don't have enough money to eat so we have to resort to temporary part-time jobs. It's like freelance writer or artist, really, said Mark. Yes, it's like that, said Charmaine in agreement. Jin was in awe. That is so intense. It is, said Charmaine, releasing a heavy sigh. I talked too much today. It's okay, said Mark, grinning at her. I like your voice. Charmaine glanced away out of embarrassment. It's too deep. It's fine, said Mark quickly. You must be disappointed, said Charmaine, noticing that Rina and Jin had their wide, curious eyes on her. That I am not what you expected. No, no, said Mark anxiously. I had no expectations whatsoever. For a few seconds, Rina somehow convinced me that you might be a guy and that didn't affect me at all. Mark laughed it off. I'm happy to meet you in person... so happy that I don't care about anything else right now. Charmaine sighed. I am no good at talking to people. That's fine, said Mark reassuringly. It's better that way. I get you all to myself. I can be quite antisocial at times, said Charmaine solemnly. I am unforgiving and moody. I am also an introvert and my sleep schedule is messed up and- I don't mind any of that, said Mark with a charming smile. As long as you tell me that your feelings are the same as they are online. Charmaine lowered her eyes. They are. I promise. That's all I ask. Okay, then, said Charmaine, more satisfied than before. Since Jin and Rina decided to keep quiet for the two to interact, Mark went on ahead and pointed at himself, How about me? Did I meet your expectations if there were any? Hm, said Charmaine, taking out her cell phone again. She typed something on it and checked it for a few seconds. Mark was amused at this. According to the list I described you before I met you, you matched four of them completely, met five somewhat, and totally missed the rest. How detailed, said Rina in a quick remark. I'm afraid to ask how long the list is, said Mark, blinking. Charmaine tried to smile as she pocketed her cell phone. Does it matter? Not really, said Mark, noticing that Jin finally picked up the meat he wanted. I'm simply glad to be in your presence and to know that you've thought of me to that extreme. It's because I never would have thought that we would ever meet in real life, said

Charmaine honestly, pushing the cart after Jin. Mark laughed. It was the opposite for me. Oh? I was going to do everything in my power to meet you one day, said Mark with a tender expression on his face. That's how I roll. I want to be able to make decisions on my own and get things I really want without interference. Your personality, said Charmaine thoughtfully. Is almost the same offline as it is online. That's good, said Mark immediately. Charmaine managed to smile. It is good. I don't feel like I'm talking to someone I met in person for the first time at all. Awesome, said Mark, gazing intently at Charmaine. All the meanwhile, Jin pondered on the idea of him and Jezebelle being more like this. It wasn't as if he was dissatisfied with their relationship now. He was just curious what they would be saying and doing if they were more like Mark and Charmaine. Just from their short conversation alone, Jin could tell they cared a lot for each other and that was something Jezebelle could learn to be more like. On the other hand, Jin was beginning to think about his future. Rina was obviously heading down the university and then job route. Mark wanted Jin to try out different types of colleges and universities in order to figure out his major and not waste time and money. As for Charmaine, she was an extreme case of how she pursued her supposedly only talent in life, even at all the risks she mentioned before. For her, college was a waste of time and she would rather do something else she was better at. In this type of environment where people thought more about their future and career, Jin wondered what he should be doing. What should he do once he returned to Wilson High? What should he do after Wilson High? What should he be trying to accomplish here? Thanks to these questions, Jin hadn't returned to Jezebelle yet. Just give me a little more time, Fi, thought Jin as he picked up a jar. ************************************************************** In her room, Rin locked her door so that she didn't have to confront her father. He had been trying to speak to her ever since he found out she had been lying about him about her pregnancy. As for Jordan, he was going to move this Friday so he was preparing everything from paperwork to luggage. Today though, they were both busy with schoolwork. How's the Calculus assignment going? asked Rin, picking her eyes from her binder. Good, said Jordan, keeping his eyes on the page. Keep it up, said Rin sweetly before she returned to her work. Question, said Jordan, scribbling down a number. Yes? How do you study for history before a test? Rin thought about it. I rewrite my lecture notes... I type up my own notes from the book and make an outline... I study the outline and then read the book several times. Depending on the time period, I might make note cards as well. You really go all out, said Jordan, sighing. Are you struggling with history? asked Rin curiously. Jordan nodded. I don't have a study method for history. You can see my notes if you want, said Rin quickly. But I believe the process of writing your own notes and making an outline helps more than the studying itself. I'll keep that in mind, then, said Jordan with a dashing smile.

If you need help, just ask me. Thanks, Ri-chan. Rin returned to her notes again. No problem, Jo-kun. How are you and Kristian? asked Jordan suddenly, noticing that Rin hadn't even mentioned Kristian's name once for a couple of days now. It had been like this since the day they helped Eddie and Lydia resolved their problem. Are you two doing well? I'm not speaking to him at the moment, said Rin solemnly. You guys fought again? asked Jordan, surprised. I wouldn't say that, said Rin defensively. It's more like he keeps comparing himself to you and Jin and the other boys in my life. Sighing, Rin shook her head and muttered, It's Kristian being possessive again. He might have a valid reason to be possessive though. Like what? asked Rin, annoyed. Jordan picked his head up and stared at her. I mean, it is you. Jo-kun... said Rin with wide eyes. That didn't come out right, said Jordan, frowning. Rin blushed. I didn't mean it romantically. I meant it more like... your personality makes him more possessive because you're so flighty sometimes. I'm flighty? asked Rin in dismay. Sometimes, said Jordan in repetition. Rin pouted. Those are his own insecurities, then. Maybe that's why he used to date girls who only look in his direction? Yes! Exactly! Jordan chuckled. Ignoring each other won't solve anything. You should work on your communication skills, Ri-chan. You're getting better at understanding others, but there's a lot you should improve on. I know, said Rin, resigned. I'm worse so I really shouldn't be talking, said Jordan, amused. It's all right, said Rin, sighing. I just can't believe Kristian would even suggest that I marry Jin because I think about him so much. At the same time, I'm afraid to call him. Why? asked Jordan curiously. I'm afraid he'll tell me that he'll side with Jezebelle... Jordan allowed a bitter laugh. That's the exact reason why I haven't called him either. I've been thinking of him constantly, but I don't have the guts to hear him reject me over the phone from another state. Yes... The way I see it, Ri-chan, said Jordan with a pleasant smile. You need to fix a couple of your leftover problems with Kristian before you and him can be together after we're done with Jezebelle. Are you with me on this one? I agree with you, said Rin, bobbing her head. If things don't work out, said Jordan slowly, glancing away. And it's a big 'if', Jordan paused and received Rin's approval, you can always settle for me. I don't mind dating a best friend anyways. That's how it's been with Vic and I for a long time. And it's not like I can date Jin. Speaking of that, said Rin, laying down next to Jordan. She had been at her desk and Jordan on top of her bed this entire time. Do you think that Cole guy is gay? You thought the same thing, too? asked Jordan, gaping. Rin nodded firmly. He is either bisexual or homosexual.

That's the feeling I get too, said Jordan thoughtfully. Why is it that we both get that vibe from him? He's clean, refreshing, cute, and sweet, said Rin, blinking. So he must be gay. That's nice. Seriously, I don't know why, said Rin, sighing. But we can't both be wrong, right? I wonder where that leaves us if we're right about him, said Jordan, shrugging. You and Cole can hook up, said Rin with a bright gleam in her eyes. Jordan glared at Rin. What am I? An animal? I don't hook up with every person I see... male or female. At Jordan's remark, Rin jumped off the bed, ready to draw at the thought. It was then that Jordan's cell phone started ringing. He checked the number before he picked up and greeted, Hey Rick. Rick Crawford? asked Rin at the name. Jordan nodded and returned to the phone, Not really. And yeah, Ri-chan and I are together. Jordan listened for a bit before he continued, Of course, we're friends, Rick. We're on the tennis team together for years now. Just because I'm not popular anymore doesn't mean anything. Rin nodded. Yes, that's right. What? cried Jordan out loud. Now? Huh? asked Rin, climbing back on the bed next to Jordan. Maybe, said Jordan, sighing. We're not like Jin and we don't only help couples, but we can try. I'll have to ask Ri-chan first. Jordan held his cell phone against his chest and looked at her. You want to help babysit for Rick? He says it's urgent. Both of us? asked Rin quickly, amazed. Yup. It would help further our reputation of being a helping couple. Since Jordan had to say that, Rin had no choice, Tell him that it's fine as long as I can study over at that house... wherever it is. Jordan ruffled her hair before he placed the phone against his ear, She says it's fine as long as she can study there. Jordan waited and laughed. No problem, Rick. We'll take good care of the kid. Once Jordan hung up, he dropped his head and groaned, I have no experience with children. But, said Rin, pale. I don't either! Crap. *********************************************** Inside the hotel kitchen, Rina made sure to close the door quietly behind her before she headed inside, only to meet Jin wearing a chef outfit. Somehow, it suited him. The white hat and apron and everything. That wasn't the problem Rina had though. There was Jin, but where was Mark and Charmaine? When Rina asked this, Jin scratched the back of his neck. Mark was trying to persuade Charmaine to stay in his hotel room so they left to check it out together... Why didn't you stop them? Surprised at Rina's angry voice, Jin said calmly, I know how Mark feels. He and Charmaine haven't seen each other in... ever... so they want to spend some time alone. Stupid shota, said Rina, holding out her hand. Give me your keys. My keys? Your room key! Which room key? Losing her temper, Rina barked, Which room key do you think it is? Do I need your room key to get into my room? Scared of Rina, Jin handed over Mark's extra room key.

Thank you. I'll come back and help you cook once I'm done with them. You can cook? asked Jin in disbelief. Yes, said Rina, scowling. My parents are strict and Japanese. Oh, said Jin, laughing. I thought you're like Rin-chan who can't cook. I'm not Rin-chan for the last time! After banging the door close, Jin blinked after her and turned to the other chefs and cooks, who were asking him mental questions. Jin laughed it off and told them that Rina had a bad temper and was a conservative person by nature. Inwardly though, Jin wondered why Rina would react so violently at the thought of Mark and Charmaine doing inappropriate things in Mark's room. For instance, if Bo and Joyce were making out somewhere, Rin wouldn't care that much. Soon enough, Jin was getting a headache from trying to figure Rina out so he returned to his cooking and was relieved to hear that at least this twenty-year-old Japanese girl could cook. Or at least, she claimed she could cook. He was still doubtful. As for Rina, she got inside the elevator and pressed the button for the floor Mark's room was in. Since he signed up way before she and Jin, he had a much lower floor. That Mark, said Rina, placing her hands on her hips in the elevator. I can't believe him. Rina glared at the elevator door. I thought he was more mature than that. After the elevator doors opened, Rina rushed over to his room, but managed to compose herself right in front of the door before she slipped the door key in. Expecting the worse, Rina barged in to find Mark and Charmaine on the floor of his room with his hand on her neck. At the sight of Rina closing the door behind her, Mark dropped his jaw. Rina, what are you doing here? I knew it, said Rina, lowering herself and pushing the two away from each other. I knew you would do something inappropriate when I left to go to the restroom! What are you? asked Charmaine, glancing away. His mother? You shouldn't be doing anything to her, Mark, said Rina in a chiding voice and ignoring Charmaine. You know better than to try anything on a girl you just met. I've known her for three years, said Mark defensively. Online! Mark scowled. Rina, who gave you permission to rush into my room? Blushing bright red, Rina glanced away, You're supposed to be helping Jin in the kitchen alongside me, not goofing off here with your girlfriend. You're avoiding the question, Rina, said Mark, bracing himself against the wall. This isn't your room, said Rina anxiously. Jin sleeps here too. Rina! Rina stomped her right foot impatiently. I don't want to make Jin do all the work for our dinner! We should pitch in too. Rina grabbed Mark's arm and forced him to stand up and toward the door. Let's go. Without warning, Charmaine released Mark's arm from Rina and said, Please give us a moment. We shall be down. I don't trust you guys to behave, said Rina, scowling. Charmaine, said Mark, cooling down his temper. May I please have a moment with Rina? Charmaine glanced from Rina to Mark. I promise it will only take a second. I won't do anything to hurt you. Charmaine nodded and left without another word. Once she was out of the room, Mark sighed and glared at Rina. Rina glared back. The two of them glared at each other for a few seconds before Mark gave up and threw his head back. He collapsed against the floor

and held his head in his hands. I don't know whether I should be happy or not that she doesn't mind me talking to you all alone in my room, said Mark under his breath. What do you want to talk about? asked Rina skeptically. Your behavior. What about it? Mark picked his head up and looked at her. It's unacceptable. Unacceptable? asked Rina, repeating. What the hell? You can't barge in my room and tell me not to touch my girlfriend, said Mark sternly at her. One, that's annoying and two, you're making me look bad in front of Charmaine. She might think that I give you my room key and we've been staying in the same room this entire time. Rina glared at him. Why don't you tell her how you've been sharing a room with that friend of yours before you became friends with Jin? That's different, said Mark, flushing. Different? asked Rina, palled. How is it different? Because she knows your face... That doesn't mean anything! Mark bit his lip. Plus, I've been flirting with you way too much. Charmaine hasn't said anything, but I'm afraid that she might say something. Rina's eyes widened dramatically. I don't want her to say anything because I really do care for her. She shouldn't have to suspect anything from the two of us. That's why you running into my room is unacceptable. You're awful, said Rina, grabbing a hold of Mark's abandoned pants nearby and throwing it at him. You're horrible! What about my feelings? Mark blinked. Your feelings? Forget you, said Rina, stomping out of the room. Once she was outside, Rina made sure to pass by Charmaine without saying or showing anything. Rina rushed to the elevator and pressed the button continuously to close the elevator doors before either of them could catch up to her. At first, she thought she was going to be mad that Mark would say such a thing. But now that she was by herself in this elevator, all she felt was sadness. Even though she told herself that Mark was annoying, she hated the fact that he would readily accept a girl he met for the first time when he refused to accept her for who she was. He would always make fun of her personality and words without remorse on his face. It was as if he loved to torment her. And now, to add to that, he did it to flirt with her? What an awful person. Rin-chan? asked Jin at the sight of Rina reentering the kitchen. Jin noticed she was by herself. Where's Mark and Charmaine? I don't know, said Rina lamely, wearing on an apron. Er, okay. Rina forced the best smile she could manage. What should I help with first? Rina, said Jin, gasping at her. Are you okay? Why? Do I not look okay? asked Rina anxiously. There are tears in your eyes, said Jin, blinking. Rina blinked the tears away quickly. Oh, it must be the onions. Jin glanced over at the unsliced onions. I'm really okay. There's nothing going on. You shouldn't have to worry about me, shota.

You're like my big sister, said Jin, smiling gently. He went over and hugged her. Rina froze in her spot. What's wrong? You can tell me. I'd rather not, said Rina honestly. Jin nodded in understanding. That's fine, too. Jin released her and helped her into a chair. I'll cook you something nice so please just relax. Since you're not feeling well, I can cook all by myself. I'm used to it anyways. Lowering her eyes, Rina said, In your opinion... Jin brightened up immediately in front of the stove. Yes, Rina? You called me Rina... Oh, it's because Rin-chan can't cook. Sighing, Rina continued, In your opinion, shota, do you think Mark had been flirting with me this entire time? Jin tilted his head. That's what he said a few minutes ago... Flirting... said Jin, thinking. I'm not sure what that means exactly. You really are a clueless shota, said Rina, resigning. But if your relationship is similar to my two friends' relationship, said Jin with a gentle expression on his face. It means that Mark cares for you a lot. Impossible, said Rina without a doubt. That's just what I believe, Rina. You don't have to believe me. Rina placed her arm on top of the armrest. Fine, I'll tell you. Jin perked up. Mark basically told me that he didn't want Charmaine to misunderstand my relationship with him. He thought me forcing myself into his room was inappropriate. Rina scowled and wrapped her arms in front of her chest. But what they were doing was probably more inappropriate. I don't see why he has to get mad at me. She is his girlfriend and he doesn't want her to distrust him already... If he wants to be such a loyal boyfriend, he shouldn't have shared his room with that one girl in the first place! Jin blinked. Rina-chan? He's just taking it out on me because it's me, said Rina, growling. Interesting, said Jin, returning his attention to the food. What is? Do you not like Charmaine, Rina-chan? Rina thought about it and said, I have nothing against her. She's a pro-gamer and she's cool enough. Rina shrugged. She doesn't suit him though. I don't know. This whole relationship is iffy to me. I don't like it one bit. Rina-chan, said Jin, going up to Rina. Are you sure you're not- Hey Jin! Jin turned his attention from Rina to Mark. Hey Mark. I'll help you, said Mark enthusiastically, picking up an apron on the way in. The kitchen staff gawked at the four in the room, including a gloomy-looking Charmaine. I feel bad leaving all the cooking to someone ten years my junior. Nine, said Jin, blushing. No matter, said Mark, grinning. I'll help. Mark turned to the other two. You girls going to help too? Charmaine shook her head. I burn stuff I touch. Oh, said Mark, blinking. As for Rina, she became frustrated at the sight of a carefree Mark and left the kitchen without another word. Jin and Mark exchanged a look after Rina stormed out. Charmaine muttered something about being disliked by Rina. Since Jin was currently

cooking, he couldn't chase after her. This was also the case with Mark. Sighing, Charmaine offered to take on this task since she felt it was her fault for their quarrel. Not long after Charmaine took off from the kitchen, she spotted Rina sitting on a couch and watching a group of gamers playing nearby. Charmaine slipped between the crowds and sat down next to Rina. The Japanese girl tossed Charmaine a glance before she returned her attention to the television screen. Mark asked me to stay over, said Charmaine quietly. So? asked Rina, annoyed. In his room, said Charmaine solemnly. Rina was obviously disgruntled, but she kept her eyes forward. Jin is supposed to sleep in his room. He's going to convince him to move back to your room. How selfish. Charmaine played with her strands of blonde hair. I haven't replied yet... Obviously, you should say no, said Rina, trying hard not to sound harsh to Charmaine. Charmaine hadn't done anything wrong. If you do sleep over, you should stay in my room instead. It's better that way and Jin doesn't have to move around for no reason. I see... You're older than me, said Rina, rolling her eyes. You should know by now what Mark is implying by asking you sleep over in his room. It's so ridiculously obvious. You're not the innocent type, are you? Hell no, said Charmaine, allowing a weak smile. But I don't really mind. Rina shifted her eyes to Charmaine for the first time. You don't mind? Mark spent a lot of money to enter this tournament to see me, said Charmaine, tugging her legs under her chest. It's the least I can do for him. I'm not a virgin or anything so it's really of no consequence to me. You shouldn't say it like that, said Rina, irritated. How should I say it? asked the clueless Charmaine. I'm saying it as it is... But, said Rina, lowering her eyes. It sounds so cold... I told him already, said Charmaine in a dark manner. I'm not really good at this... socializing business or this love business... Charmaine sighed and stared at the television screen now. I only know of one world and that is the gaming world. But he loves you so much, said Rina, feeling sorry for Mark now. I love him too, said Charmaine quickly, realizing what she was saying. But I'm not sure if what we want out of this relationship is the same... Rina frowned at Charmaine. I'm speaking way too much today... For once, Rina took the time to observe Charmaine's face. The girl looked depressed no matter how Rina looked at her. On the other hand, Mark was bright, cheerful, and talkative. While Charmaine liked to keep to herself, Mark enjoyed the company of others. Rina couldn't imagine Mark trying to live in isolation. Even though it was none of her business, Rina couldn't help, but feel that they were moving their relationship way too fast for a couple who just met each other in person today. Moreover, Mark simply accepted Charmaine for who she was without question while Charmaine was slightly apathetic to everything. She liked to go with the flow. Whatever it was, Rina felt uncomfortable with this couple. What do you mean? asked Rina at last. Charmaine did not understand her question. I mean, what do you mean by that last comment? The speaking one?

No, the one before it. Since Mark was worried about both Rina and Charmaine, he quickly finished his job and searched for them. He noticed them sitting together on a couch to watch a Brawl match on the lobby television. Deciding to surprise them, Mark walked softly over to them, in time to listen onto the rest of their conversation. Our lifestyles are too different, said Charmaine regrettably. Rina lifted a brow. Lifestyles? What he said earlier to Jin... said Charmaine slowly. About how Jin should think about his future... Yes? I feel like I understand Mark a lot more, continued Charmaine. He knows what he wants in life and works for them. Right now, he wants to graduate that university he's at with a degree and everything. Charmaine released a miserable chuckle. I can't do that. I can only game to live. But, said Rina, appalled. After both of you are done with your goals... If one day, I can't game to live anymore, said Charmaine, smiling weakly. I'd rather be dead than take on one of those factory jobs. That's what I truly believe. Charmaine paused and shook her head. I've always thought Mark was one of those gamers who stayed at home and wasted their lives away since he rarely talked about himself. If so, he could travel with my brother and I to competitions. I understand, said Rina, sympathetic. He's one of those hardworking university students. He wants to make up for his lost time in high school. Charmaine nodded. That's why... I can't really take that away from him. Rina agreed quickly. And I can't give up on my lifestyle to be with him. I don't know what we should do about our relationship now that... I met him in person. You have a couple of days left, said Rina encouragingly. You should think on it. Allowing a rare smile, Charmaine said, Yes... I will. Please do. I see, said Charmaine, amused. You don't hate me, after all. No, said Rina quickly, shaking her head. The one I really hate is Mark! The two girls laughed and watched the rest of the match together. Meanwhile, Mark already went back to Jin to help the younger boy with dinner. He had heard enough to understand what was going on. Not knowing what to do, Mark pretended that it didn't bother him and went to work. Like Charmaine, he hadn't thought that far ahead. After he met Charmaine, what would he do next? Go on dates? Marry her? Mark? asked Jin, concerned for his friend. Jin... said Mark, grinning. Do you plan on marrying your girlfriend? Yes! Of course! Mark patted Jin on the back before he shifted the attention back to his chopped vegetables. Keep up with that enthusiasm, my friend. Your girlfriend is lucky to have someone like you by her side. Is there something going on with you and Charmaine? asked Jin sadly. Yes, said Mark without hesitating. But honest to God, I'm still messed up from Rina acting like this to think clearly. Mark allowed a short chortle. What the fuck is up with her? When did she start caring about me? Mark shook his head. Women are so fucking hard to read sometimes. Jin sighed. Definitely. And now this lifestyle conflict...

Lifestyle conflict? Shrugging, Mark said, Yeah. There's a chance I might be girlfriend-less soon. Mark... said Jin, hurt. Even though Jin met Rina first, it was Mark who Jin felt connected to. They were kindred spirits in Jin's opinion. Are you sure you'll be all right if that happens? You've been dating her online for three years now. I'll live, said Mark with a carefree smile on his face. I won't let that affect me. Mark... said Jin again. Here's another lifelong lesson for you, Jin, said Mark enthusiastically, gaining Jin's full attention. Just because you love someone doesn't mean everything will work out for the better. There had been couples, who were perfectly in love, and a few years later, they decide to divorce and split the fortune. Why is that? asked Jin, lost. Not everyone break up because of an argument or those clich misunderstandings, said Mark, placing down the knife. He stared at the chopped vegetables for a few seconds before he continued in a shaky voice, Sometimes, things just don't work out. Jin frowned. I don't understand, Mark. One day, you'll understand, Jin. Nodding, Jin managed to smile at Mark and say, I hope you feel better, Mark. Both you and Rina-chan are hurting so much that I can't bear to see it. Let's at least enjoy dinner together in peace. Mark grinned. That is something I can do. *************************************************** Gaping at Rick, Rin cried, He's your baby, Rick? Hush, Rin Hamada, said Rick, panicking. No one in school knows. Oh my God, said Rin, shaking Rick by the arm. What is the matter with you? Calm down, Ri-chan, said Jordan, removing her grip from Rick. Jordan flashed Rick a bright smile. Ri-chan and I won't tell anyone. You can tell us what is going on, Rick. Sighing, Rick sat down with his one-year-old baby boy on his lap. There was no doubt that the boy was his. After the phone call, Rin and Jordan figured out that Rick lived not too far away from Rin so the drive was quick. Once they arrived and saw the baby that they were supposed to be babysitting, things had turned for the worse between Rin and Rick. Remember my ex, Jordan? asked Rick, lowering his eyes. Yeah, said Jordan, nodding. She moved a while ago. This is why, said Rick, holding up the baby boy. Jordan blinked. Oh boy. I've been taking care of him since summer vacation, said Rick, groaning. That's why you've been coming to school late every day junior year, said Rin, gaping and shaking her head. And skipping practice, said Jordan, copying Rin with the head-shaking. Listen, said Rick, passing the baby over to Jordan. My aunt, who has been babysitting him since I started school, is in the hospital right now. I have to go and see her so y'all have to take care of the baby 'til I get back. Rin tossed the baby a look before she said, Are you sure about this? I can't ask my neighbors or anyone else. Please! He's only one, said Rin, frustrated. How long will you be gone? Two hours or less, said Rick, picking up his cell phone on the way out. If anything, just call me yo. Before Rick closed the door behind him, he poked his head in and said, Jordan, I ain't gonna leave him in Rin Hamada's hands so you hold onto him. She only

assists. Thanks y'all. Does this mean he thinks I'm not responsible enough? asked Rin, irritated. He knows you well, said Jordan, grinning. Die, said Rin, glaring at Jordan. Jordan held the baby with his right arm while he picked up the list Rick left him with his left hand. Checking the list quickly, Jordan proceeded to feed the baby with milk. At a loss on what she should be doing, Rin simply followed Jordan around with grabbing the milk provided and pouring it in a bottle. Next, she helped Jordan with feeding Rick's son. She was still slightly annoyed that Rick would prefer Jordan carrying his son around than her. Hey, said Jordan, placing the baby inside its crib upstairs after he was done feeding it. That wasn't too bad. I know, said Rin, lifting a brow. I thought it would be worse. You watched too much television, said Jordan, amused. My cousin was pretty loud, said Rin, wrapping her arms in front of her chest. But not all babies are like that, said Jordan, watching the sleeping child under the sheets. Rick's kid is quite a good kid. It won't be too disobedient when it gets older, then. Jordan glanced in Rin's direction. If he wakes up and needs his diaper changed, you'll have to do it. Rin scowled. You're more trustworthy so you do it. Is that what you're going to say to your own baby? Blushing, Rin said, I don't know. That is too far in the future. I want a son, said Jordan suddenly, gaining Rin's attention. Oh... said Rin, not knowing what to say. Jordan braced himself against the crib. How about you? I'm not sure, said Rin quickly, flushing red. But Kristian wanted four kids or something... Rin jolted up and added quickly, Not that I'll marry Kristian or have kids with him or anything! Laughing at first, Jordan quieted down and said, I wish I was a girl right now... Why? asked Rin, surprised. So you can have children with Jin? Hiding his face behind his hand, Jordan said, You are so... Your secret is safe with me, said Rin, patting Jordan on the back. Please don't jump to conclusions that embarrassing, said Jordan, smacking his head against his forehead now. Rin laughed and pretended like she said those words by accident. Soon, Jordan recovered and removed his hand from his face. Anyway, if I were a girl, everything would be easier right now. Rin lifted a brow. Jezebelle wouldn't hate me that much. Kristian wouldn't compete against me. The two of us could just be ordinary best friends without a care in the world. Jordan tossed Rin a hard look. I wouldn't have involved myself with your pregnancy schemes. Sorry, said Rin, closing one eye and sticking out her tongue. The baby's been asleep for a while now, said Jordan, grabbing Rin's wrist and dragging her out of the room. Let's leave him alone for now and study. Oh! You're right! Soon enough, Jordan and Rin occupied the kitchen table in order to study. Aside from her studies, Rin thought about what happened between Eddie and Lydia the other day. For some reason, even though Rin never liked Eddie, she felt sorry for the senior. He looked so sad when he talked to Lydia about their relationship. In the end, it seemed like Eddie was avoiding Lydia because he had been taking health class and learning about STD. Lydia wanted to take their relationship further, but Eddie refused to thanks to his class and

Lydia's future arranged marriage. They loved each other, but decided to stay apart. For Jordan, he thought about Rick and his situation. Obviously, Rick had made a mistake and was paying the price for his mistake. Since he was afraid of what the school would think of him, he kept this secret for a long time. Previously, Rick wanted Jin's help because Jin would never reveal his secret to anyone. Now, Rick shifted his trust from Jin to him and Rin. This was a healthy sign. Maybe, said Jordan in the middle of their studying session. Maybe Jin has a plan. What? asked Rin, obviously confused. Doesn't it seem like Jin knew exactly what he was doing after he became the leader of the Populars and then the school? asked Jordan to Rin. Rin shrugged. I guess? He might have thought of a safe plan to change the school system. And? And never completed it, said Jordan, frowning. What are you saying, Jo-kun? asked Rin, bothered. Since we're out of ideas, said Jordan persuasively. Maybe we can innocently ask him what his plan was before he was suspended from school and proceed with the rest of his plan for him while he's gone. I doubt he'll tell us, said Rin, placing her textbook down. He doesn't like us getting involved with the school system. We won't know until we try. At Jordan's puppy look, Rin sighed and pulled her cell phone from her pocket. She gazed at Jin's phone number for a few seconds before she gave in and clicked the button to call him. She knew that if she called him now, it would only be around nine over there. Knowing Jin, he wouldn't have gone to sleep yet, especially with video games to distract him. Still, as Rin listened to the dial tone, Jordan should be the one to call Jin instead of her since it was his idea. When the person on the other line finally picked up the phone, Rin happily said, Good evening, Jin. Good evening to you too, Rin-chan. Rin blinked. Who is this? Isn't this Jin's phone? Yes it is, said the other person. How do you know my name? asked Rin cautiously. Oh, caller ID and please excuse my rudeness. Huh? I should properly introduce myself, said the male voice on the other line. I'm Mark, Jin's friend from Maryland. Jin is out right now to buy some drinks from the vending machine. Rin glanced at Jordan, who had no idea what was going on. Should I leave him a message from the lovely Rin-chan? Rin frowned. It's nothing really. Just some food chain business. At the mention of a food chain, Mark sat up straight from his bed. He was currently in his room by himself. Rina was occupied in the bathroom. Charmaine had denied his invitation and was picked up by her brother not too long after dinner ended. Since Jin left in a hurry to get drinks, he forgot to bring his phone with him. Mark was in the middle of training when Rin called and since Mark saw Rin's picture before, he thought it would be fun to talk to her. What's this 'food chain' you're talking about? asked Mark, interested. Rin hesitated and he could tell. I've been through high school before and I have never heard of that term

coined at my high school. It sounds fascinating. Rin was still not convinced. Don't worry. I'm on the other side of the country so I can't really do anything, can I? Since Mark was persuasive, Rin told him a simplified version of what was the food chain and a vague retelling of what was going on at Wilson High. All the meanwhile, Mark didn't say a word. He listened to her and decided that this girl definitely matched what he thought of her when he saw her picture on Jin's cell phone. At last, when Rina came out of the restroom with a towel in her hair, Mark watched her with interest, but he kept most of his attention on Rin on the phone. May I butt in for a second? asked Mark at last. Rina noticed him on Jin's cell phone and asked, What the hell are you doing? I'm talking to your Californian counterpart, said Mark to Rina before he paid attention to Rin again. Sorry, Rin-chan. Someone else is in the room. Rin sighed. I don't even know why I told you all that. I should go now... Since Jordan heard the baby upstairs, he exited the room in a hurry. Please tell Jin that I called him and if he could call me back soon, it would be great. One second, Rin-chan, said Mark, laying on the bed. Rina approached him with a lift of her brow. Mark patted the spot next to him on the bed. Rina pouted and went over to Jin's bed instead. If I may, I want to say something about your little game over there. It's not a game, said Rin, insulted. It sounds like a game to me and a fun one at that, said Mark honestly. He watched with a grin on his face at Rina playing her PSP with her back to him. Honest to God, I believe you should stop getting yourself involved with this food chain business. Why? asked Rin in disbelief. Because by involving yourself, you're only playing the high school game, which is exactly what it wants. What do you mean by that? asked Rin, feeling defensive. Mark sighed. Listen for a second, Rin-chan. Mark noticed something about Rina and muttered quickly, Hold on a second. Don't hang up on me, Rin-chan. Mark placed the cell phone against his chest before he said to Rina, You're showing your underwear, Rina-sama. Are you trying to seduce me? Noticing that her dress was pulled up slightly to show her underwear, Rina gasped and pulled down her hem quickly. She flushed and shrieked at Mark about spying on her and being unfaithful to Charmaine. Ignoring her, Mark waved it off and returned to the phone call with the sixteen-year-old. If he liked her, would he be a lolicon? With that question in mind, Mark laughed and held the phone against his ear. Back to what I was saying, said Mark in a serious voice. You probably don't realize this yet, Rin-chan, but what you're playing is a social game. Mark smirked. Every high school has a social game and within that social game, you lose yourself in it and try to make the most out of it. Rin blinked. Everything made sense so far. But I bet you don't know that whether you win or not in this game, there's no pretty outcome. No grand prize. Are you saying... said Rin slowly. That it's a huge waste of time? Pretty much, said Mark, shrugging. Rina was trying hard to ignore the conversation between Mark and Rin and concentrate on her game instead. Listen, sweetheart. The social game ends the minute you graduate from high school. Rin didn't say anything since she was thinking this over and watching Jordan come down with Rick's son. People who succeed or are at the top of the social game don't necessarily come out of high school as successful human beings or anything. Everything they earned throughout high school out of this so-called 'high school experience' don't mean shit once they have that diploma in their

hands... if they even get that far. Rin gulped. Then... why would people go so far to hurt one another for the sake of winning this game? Isn't it obvious? asked Mark, surprised at how slow Rin was. Not to me. Mark laughed and answered, It's okay. I'm not criticizing you. Innocent, cute girls are the greatest thing to hit the planet since sex. Rin and Rina blushed on both ends. Mark had an innocent look on his face. What's with the silence? You're a straight-forward person, aren't you? Most definitely. Rin sighed. I can tell. You're hitting on a sixteen-year-old, said Rina, groaning over at Jin's bed. I'm only learning from the best, said Mark, lifting a brow. Shotacon. I am not a shotacon! Since Rin could hear the argument this time, she had to interrupt since she was too curious about the other topic, What were you saying about the game again? Oh yeah, said Mark, remembering. Rina was now trying to grab a handful of his hair so he was keeping her at arm's length. The reason why high schoolers hurt each other for popularity and all that shit are because they can't see past themselves. Unlike my friend Jin here, they are stuck in their own little world. They fight over such petty things and care about such trivial matters. Mark sighed and knew he had mentioned this way too many times. Rina had given up on attacking him so she was sulking instead. Just believe me, Rin-chan, since I've been there before. I've been popular and I've been through a shit load of trouble. Popularity doesn't mean shit since you rarely meet those people again except for maybe your besties. No one will care once the next new hottest thing comes around. It's not worth your time. Rin was so speechless that she took a few seconds to recover and said, I understand what you're saying, but... Rin paused and sighed. Have you told Jin any of this? Hm, said Mark with a thoughtful look on his face. If what you're saying about his suspension is true, I believe that it is best if he figures out what he wants to do with his life from now on. No matter what he decides, I'll support him. You too, right Rina-sama? Rina scowled. I'm not talking to you! She says yes, said Mark, grinning. Anyways, we'll take care of Jin for you. After everything I said, do you still want Jin to call you back? No, it's fine, said Rin, watching Jordan change diapers. Thanks for talking to me. If you want my number, said Mark cheerfully. I'll give it you, Rin-chan. No thank you, said Rin quickly, noticing Jordan having problem with the baby powder. I'll have to go in a hurry. Tell Jin that Jo-kun and I say hi. The minute Rin hung up on Mark, Rina cried, What is up with you today? What now? asked Mark, annoyed. You were hitting on Jin's friend on his cell phone, that's what! Mark shrugged. That doesn't concern you. I'm telling Charmaine on you, said Rina, scowling. Knowing Charmaine, she's not going to care, said Mark, challenging Rina. Furthermore, I'm not even sure if we're going to last at this rate. Rina pouted. You sound way too pessimistic. No, just realistic. Really.

Really, said Mark, placing Jin's phone down carefully on top of the pillow. Charmaine might have feelings for me, but she's not going to give up anything to be with me, especially not her way of life. How do you... I know about it, said Mark quickly, receiving a sad look from Rina. Are you feeling sorry for me? Rina shook her head frantically. Don't be. Mark smiled. I'm not a kid anymore. I'm not going to cry over spilled milk or a girl. Rina frowned. I thought you were serious about her since you saved your money for this event just to see her. Oh, I am serious, said Mark, grinning at Rina. But if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. There's nothing I can do about it. Yes, there is, said Rina quickly. You can persuade her. You're good at that. You should keep her by your side. Mark laughed at Rina's remark. I don't want to do something lame like that. I'll make it harder on her and she'll be indecisive. But you're the one who said that if you want something enough, you should work hard towards it no matter how impossible it may be! I did say that, didn't I? asked Mark, amused. I like to say that I am really selfless and care for her a lot so I want to let her do what she wants without interference. Mark paused as Jin came back inside the room with the bottles. But in reality, I guess you're right. I don't want her as much as I thought. Jin blinked at them. Am I interrupting? Yes, Jin, said Mark, sighing. Rina was about to be mine in a second. Oh, I'm sorry. Mark waved it off. It's okay. Oh shut up, said Rina, getting up and grabbing one of the bottles. Thanks. No problem, said Jin, confused. You make an excellent cook, said Mark, smiling at Jin. I agree, said Rina with a nod. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks guys, said Jin, beaming with pride. If you were a girl, I'll marry you and make you my housewife, said Mark in a joking manner. But of course, that's only if you want to. If you don't, you don't have to. Rina went over and punched Mark without warning. Mark turned on her. What's that for? First, you flirt with that girl on the phone, said Rina, punching him again. Now, you're flirting with a made-up female Jin. You are absolutely the worse person. Rina threw her head back and sat back down. I don't even know why I hang out with you. Isn't it because you care for Mark? asked Jin, sitting down on Mark's bed. I absolutely hate him, said Rina, growling. Jin frowned. You're really mad at him today. I know why, said Mark, facing Jin. It's because I tried to hit on your Rin-chan friend on the phone. Rin-chan? asked Jin, surprised. She called to say hi. Jo-kun too. Oh, I see, said Jin with a nod. Isn't your friend only sixteen? asked Rina hastily. Jin confirmed this. Why would he make a pass at her? He's way too old for her! It's creepy. I know I shouldn't say this, said Jin carefully. Rina lifted a brow. But aren't you being way too jealous over someone you hate so much, Rina-chan?

Rina flushed and cried, I am not jealous. Rina forced herself to stand up and turn away from their faces. I'm leaving. It's getting late and I shouldn't be in the same room as two boys anyways. I didn't mean to upset you, Rina-chan, said Jin, getting up as well. His phone started ringing so he checked to see Jezebelle's number. Oh, it's Fi. Good night, said Rina bitterly, leaving abruptly. Chuckling to himself, Mark said, I see how it is. Before Mark went after Rina, Mark picked up his drink and saluted Jin. Out the door, Mark noticed that she was already down the hallway and near the elevator. At the sight of him coming towards her, Rina pressed the button for the elevator as quickly as possible. Mark lifted her hand up before the elevator doors shot open. Let's not break the button, Rina-sama, said Mark in warning. Why are you going after me? asked Rina, scowling. Mark laughed. I'm escorting you back to your room. You never know what kind of predators are out here to capture you, Rina-sama. Give me a break, said Rina, passing by him and into the elevator. Mark followed suit and stood next to her. You're so annoying and a total flirt, too. You said you don't want to give Charmaine the wrong idea and yet, you're doing all this. If the relationship is non-existence, said Mark carefully, uncapping his bottle and taking a sip of it quickly. Then, I don't want her to get the wrong idea. On the other hand, if it's there and I hide it... Mark shook his head. Not good. Keeping her head low, Rina muttered, What are you trying to imply? Before Charmaine left for the day, she told me something interesting, said Mark, keeping his eyes on the number indicating what floor they were on now. She said she didn't understand why I would be interested in someone like her when I already have Rina. What? We're not dating. I know. She totally got the wrong idea. I knew this was going to happen when you barged into my room without warning earlier. Rina flushed and said quickly, I'll explain to her tomorrow. I don't want her to think that there's anything going on between us. It depends, said Mark right when the door opened for them. He tossed Rina an innocent look. Do you want something to happen between us? How can you ask such a thing? asked Rina, stepping out of the elevator. You already have Charmaine. You're right, said Mark, smirking. I already know that. Then, why? Just for the sake of asking. You're horrible, said Rina, hearing her heart in her ears. I'm sure you can go down that hallway by yourself, said Mark, turning his back to her so he didn't have to look at her in the eye. I'll see you tomorrow morning. Let's win our matches tomorrow so then we can go against each other. All right. Good night. Mark waved over his shoulder. Good night, Rina-sama. That was pointless, said Rina under her breath. Mark didn't have to come with her for the elevator ride when the hallway walk was more dangerous. Rina thought about what Mark said about trying hard toward something you want, even if it were impossible. She thought of her gaming, her parents, her education, and everything important in her life at once. What is it that I really want?

Checking the time on his cell phone, Mark saw that it had been ten minutes. Rina must have made it to her hotel room safely by now. With that, Mark pressed the button to close the elevator doors. He should either go to the lobby or elsewhere since Jin was on the phone with his girlfriend. Before the doors closed though, much to Mark's surprise, he saw Rina from afar. Immediately, Mark stopped the elevator doors from closing. Rina ran back into the elevator, gasping for breath. Rina? asked Mark, waiting for her. Mark, said Rina, catching her breath. You want to eat some ice cream? At this time? Why not? With or without Jin? Rina blushed and muttered, He'd rather talk to his girlfriend, I think... Smiling sweetly, Mark said, We're adults, Rina-sama. Let's go drinking instead. It's on me tonight. With the elevator doors closing behind her, Rina said, I can't hold my liquor though. Rina paused and thought about it. What's the legal drinking age over here anyways? It depends, said Mark, shrugging. But to buy, twenty-one I believe. Oh, said Rina, frowning. I can't drink anyway. But isn't it different over in Japan? The legal drinking age in Japan is twenty, said Rina quickly. You're twenty so that's good enough for me, said Mark, chuckling. But I still can't hold my liquor, said Rina in reminder. Sweet. I like that. Rina scowled. We're getting ice cream. Once they were on the first floor, Rina and Mark went on their way to the bar downstairs. Since they had more matches tomorrow, they decided as long as they didn't drink too much it should be fine. This was why they would go back to Jin's room afterward since Jin would be responsible enough to take care of them. That was the plan, at least. After the first cup, Mark and Rina told each other about themselves and their lives so far without restraint. All the meanwhile, up in Mark's room, Jin told Jezebelle everything he did earlier today since she was interested in it. If there was one major difference between the older and younger Jezebelle, it was that the younger Jezebelle wanted more than anything to absorb new information. Unlike older Jezebelle who appeared to know everything, younger Jezebelle still had a lot to learn so listening to Jin talk about tournaments and new people fascinated her. By the end of their talk, Jezebelle and Jin had fallen asleep on the phone. Rina did as well, in which Mark had to carry her back to his room where he managed to open the door after some struggle, drop her off on his bed, and collapse in it next to her.
