Dont like pressure? Your tires do

(NAPS)Investing a little time and effort to make sure your tires are road worthy can pay dividends when it comes to safety. Experts say the first step is to make sure your tires are properly inflated. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, underinflated tires contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you stay safe during your next trip. To get the most from your tires this summer, here are some maintenance tips from the worlds largest tire and wheel retailerDiscount Tire: Get Pressure RightLow tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound per square inch per month. The specific inflation pressure number can be found on the vehicle placard located on the drivers side doorpost, glove box door, fuel door or in the owners manual. Custom tires and wheels may change standard air pressure requirements, so if you customize, have a pro check them out before you go. Dont Overload Vehicle Overloading decreases fuel economy due to increased wind drag and cargo weight. Handling, control and braking are also negatively impacted. Rotate Before You GoRegular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles have longer life and help to maximize your tire investment. Straighten UpProper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. Bald Isnt BeautifulLack of tread affects the tires ability to grip the road. Make sure tires dont have uneven wear, high or low spots or unusually smooth

areas that can decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents. A Five-Minute Fix Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Dont go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check since a tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still not appear flat. Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long trip. Use the vehicle manufacturers recommended tire pressure. Additionally, check tire tread depth by using the "penny test." Insert Abe Lincolns head upside down into the tread. If you see his entire head, its time to replace the tire.

Celebration began in Texas

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is the name given to emancipation day by African-Americans in Texas. On that day in 1865 Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Orders, No.3 to the people of Galveston. It stated: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere." Large celebrations on June 19 began in 1866 and continued regularly into the early 20th century. The AfricanAmericans treated this day like the Fourth of July and the celebrations contained similar events. In the early days, the celebration included a prayer service, speakers with inspirational messages, reading of the emancipation proclamation, stories from former slaves, food, red soda water, games, rodeos and dances. The celebration of June 19 as emancipation day spread from Texas to the neighboring states of Louisiana,

CELEBRATE FREEDOM

...The history of Juneteenth

From page 4
Arkansas and Oklahoma. It has also appeared in Alabama, Florida, and California as African-American Texans migrated. In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves purchased land, or "emancipation grounds," for the Juneteenth gathering. Examples include: Emancipation Park in Houston, purchased in 1872; what is now Booker T. Washington Park in Mexia; and Emancipation park in East Austin. Celebration of Juneteenth declined during World War II but revived in 1950 at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas. Interest and participation fell away during the late 1950's and 1960's as attention focused on expansion of freedom for African-Americans. In the 1970's Juneteenth revived in some communities. For example, in Austin the Juneteenth celebration returned in 1976 after a 25 year hiatus. The preceding information was taken form the Texas State Library and Archives Commission Web site.

Juneteenth a legal holiday in Wisconsin

While Juneteenth Day has been celebrated for more than 145 years, this is the third year it is a legal holiday in Wisconsin. "Milwaukee has long celebrated Juneteenth Day and I am proud that Wisconsin is moving forward to recognize this important holiday across the state," Governor Jim Doyle said during a bill signing ceremony Dec. 1, 2009 at Northcott Neighborhood House. "Juneteenth Day marks a historic milestone in our nations history and celebrates the freedom that unites all Americans." Senate Bill 170 made Juneteenth Day, June 19, an official legal holiday. Juneteenth Day is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, slaves in Texas first received word that all slaves in the U.S. had been freed by President Lincoln. Milwaukee first celebrated Juneteenth Day in the 1970s, and the annual event continues today. The bill was introduced by Sen. Spencer Coggs (D-Milwaukee) and was approved by the state Senate in October 2009, with the state Assembly following a short time later. "Wisconsin is now the 32nd state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or state holiday observance," said Mona Adams Winston, board member of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) and Co-Chair of the Madison Juneteenth Celebration, along with Co-Chair Annie Weatherby-Flowers, after the bill approval. "We have been celebrating Juneteenth in Madison for 20 years. This is really a historic achievement and I am proud to have been able to speak at the state capitol in favor of this bill."

Five creative ways to use containers in your landscape

BY MELINDA MYERS Container gardens have long been used to add a spot of color by a front entrance or expand planting space in city lots, balconies and decks. Dont let past experience and tradition limit your vision. Try one or more of these attractive, fun and functional ways to include containers in your landscape, large or small. Add vertical interest to any garden or garden space. Select a large attractive container filled with tall plants like papyrus and canna. Or elevate a small pot on steppers or an overturned pot for added height. Create height with smaller pots and plants by strategically stacking and planting them into a creative planting. Try setting any of these planters right in the garden to create a dramatic focal point. Create a privacy screen or mask a bad view. Use an arbor or other support for hanging baskets and then place a few containers below for an attractive screen. Or create a garden of containers to provide seasonal interest using a variety of plants. Use trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses for height. Save money by purchasing smaller plants. Elevate these on overturned pots for added height and impact. Mask the mechanics by wrapping the pots in burlap. Then add a few colorful self-watering pots in the foreground for added color and beauty. Fill these with annuals or perennials for additional seasonal interest. Bring the garden right to your back door for ease of harvest and added entertainment. A self-watering patio planter, windowbox, or rail planter reduces maintenance and makes harvesting herbs as easy as reaching out the window or backdoor. Plus, guests will have fun harvesting their own fresh mint for mojitos or greens for their salads. Define outdoor living spaces within your landscape. Use containers as walls and dividers to separate entertaining and play areas from quiet reflective spaces. And consider using pots with built in casters or set them on moveable saucers to make moving these pots easier. This way you can expand and shrink individual spaces as needed simply by moving the pots. Create your own vacation paradise. Use

A day just for Dad

By Tresa Erickson Picture it. It is 1909, just five years before President Woodrow Wilson would sign a national observance of Mother's Day into effect. Several states had been celebrating Mother's Day for years, and while listening to a sermon about the day, young Sonora Smart Dodd wondered why no day had been set aside for fathers. Her own father had raised her and her siblings singlehandedly after their mother had died. There should be such a day, Dodd thought, and decided to start campaigning for one. Dodd selected her father's birthday, June 5, for the celebration. However, this did not give officials in her hometown of Spokane, WA, enough time to prepare. They selected the third Sunday in June, June 19, to be Father's Day. On June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day celebration took place in Spokane. Dodd selected the red rose as a tribute for living fathers and the white rose as a tribute for deceased fathers. Many young men wore roses to church in honor of their fathers on that day. Dodd continued campaigning for a national observance of Father's Day, and other towns hopped onboard, throwing their own Father's Day celebrations. President Woodrow Wilson gave his support to the cause, speaking at Father's Day services in Spokane in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge followed this with a call for a national observance of Father's Day in 1924. In spite of Dodd's efforts, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation establishing the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon made the national observance permanent in 1972. Today, over 30 countries around the world celebrate Father's Day. Sonora Smart Dodd would be extremely proud of how far her idea has come.

Following the run/walk will be Central Bark Fido Fest sponsored by Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists. Milwaukees "Ulti-mutt day out" benefits Friends of MADACC and will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free admission. The event will include a wide array of vendors, canine activities, lure coursing, dock diving, live music, food, a beer tent, demonstrations, adoptable animals, kids area, and more. Datamars/PetLink will offer microchips at Fido Fests "Safe and Found" booth to pets of Walk, Run, Wag participants for $15, and to pets of all other attendees for $20. Lost Dogs of Wisconsin will scan any pets microchip for free, to ensure that it is still operable. MADACC will also offer pet I.D. tags for $5. Net proceeds raised from Walk, Run, Wag for MADACC and Fido Fest will support building improvements that contribute to the welfare and enrichment of the nearly 13,000 animals taken in by MADACC each year. MADACC rescues and assures safe, temporary shelter, veterinary, and humane care for stray, unwanted, abandoned, mistreated, and injured animals more than any other animal control shelter in Wisconsin. MADACC works with more than 75 area shelters and rescue groups to place these animals into adoption programs so they have a second chance at finding permanent, caring homes. Dogs and cats that are eligible for placement but have not been transferred to a shelter or rescue group are available for adoption directly from MADACC. In addition, MADACC offers low-cost spay/neuter, rabies vaccinations, and microchipping services. For more information about Friends of MADACC, visit www.madaccfriends.org.
