THE TRUE CHRISTMAS.
D'jUT if we have the true Christmas
spirit, then will our influence
count as strongly for Christ--
and true joy. Our prepara-
tions and observances will be done with
loving thoughts of Him; and with kind
thoughts- and consideration for those
about us. This consideration will not
only manifest itself mentally and mor-
ally, but in material ways as well. We
shall take pains to see t hat our plans
and pleasures "!ill not interfere with
the enjoyment of anyone else. We shall
scrupulously avoid making extra labor
the ' love and peace. of the Christmas
message is spread abroad, and cold, dis-
couraged, and world-weary hearts are
brought very near to the Master. Those
that have been in shadow and darkness
are brought into the light, and feet that
have been straying in paths of sin and
doubt are gently guided back to the
paths of joy and peace.

the needy ones about us, as did He W.ho

l!iVi1 HE doctrine of the Virgin Birth
liD of our Lord has of late occupied
much attention in the r eligious
world, and one of the most scholarly
volumes of our time has j ust been pub-
lished by Dr. Orr, of Scotland, and
widely circulated. In this volume he
shows the great importance of the doc-
trine as essential to all the fundamen-
tal truths of redemption and estab-
lished by the strongest evidences its
solid scriptural foundations. We can-
not entertain loose views concerning
the I ncarnation without .throwing seri-
ous doubts upon the efficacy of the cross
of Calvary and the great Atonement.
Th.e. Incarnation \vas necessary for the
complete identification of Christ with
humanity and at the same time to give
value and authority to His t eachings,
His righteousness, His atoning blood.
As God He comes from heaven to earth

far as is possible. Our gift-making and
feasting will be quiet and unostenta-

member that Jesus said: "It is more
blessed to give than to receive, " and
then, also r emembering that He was t h e
first Christmas gift, and that He gave
Himself, give accordingly, unin'fluenced
by any sordid motives. If we have
money, well and good-we shall use it
to His glory ana seek especially to cheer
and comfort some of our less fortunate
brothers and sisters. And a little money
go a long way, sometimes, for it is
not the price of a gift tha t gives it its
value, but th.e love that prompts it.
And if we have but little money, we
shall not grieve, for the best' gifts are
not obtained by money. Christ had no

friend, a visit to a shut-in, or to one

aged person, or to anyone with whom
we come in contact. Who cannot give

of the Holy Ghost, the new birth of the
believer, and the incoming and indwell-

It was great joy to me then to get
home (Seattle) for the close of the
of the King County Holiness
Association in our church,. in which
Brothers I. G. Martin and L. Milton
Williams had been\ laboring since No- .
vember 26th. It was the greatest holi-

results. Our building was not nearly
large enough to hold the' crowds, there
heing about 200 people turned away
the last three nights. Not only was the
altar full, but the platform and three
front rows of seats were used for altar
nearly every evening the last
week of the meeting.
We expect to spend the holidays at

A few words from the church at Ash-

pushing the battle against sin and striv-
ing to hold on high the banner of holi-
ness. You can imagine our delight when
BrO'. and Sister Boon returned from
Texas and located among us again. We
have recently painted the church inside
and out and are just finishing up a neat
five-room parsonage at a cost of $1250.
We have a firm, settled conviction. that
the Lord has a work for us to do in .. this
city. and in spite of all the-devil can do.
we are pushing on, believing the a.rin of
the Lord is mightier than all else com-
bined, and "the God that lived in
Daniel's time is just the same today."

FINDING THE CHRIST.
Both shepherds and wise men found
the Christ. The shepherds saw the
glory which beamed from an angel 's
face over hill and vale, and in astonish-
ment awe, they were prepared to
hear the message whi ch He to
bring- good tidings of great joy, the
Christ . born in the city of David, a
Christ the Lord, a babe in swad- .
dling clothes lying in a manger: They
heard the mighty song of good-will, by
the angel 'choir, and.started at once and
searched through the little crowded
hamlet until they found the place, and
saw the Lord of glory, and went their
.way "glorifyin.g and praising God for
all-the thl ngs which they had heard and
seen." The magi reverently gazing
into the heavens and worshiping with
such light as come to them, saw
the strangermatvel?us star, and, at once
of the Chiist means peace and j oy. To
find our way to His feet means the joy
of worship, and the peace of God which
passeth understanding. reverent
shepherds said : ''Let us now go even
unto Bethlehem, and sec this thing
which is come. t o pass, which the Lord
hath made known unto us. And they
came with haste.'' There was fool -
ish questioning as to the facts. If .th,ey
had disbelieved they would never have
seen. J esus Himself once pressed home
on Martha that if she would believe she
should see the glory of God. Belief goes
before knowl.edge. They said, "Let us
now go.'' Now is the time to find the
Christ . They searched for Him. Those
1
who seek as men seek for silver and
for hid treasure, :find. The wise men
w.ent far, and went not handed,
bnt were prepar ed to pay the of
r eal worsh.ipers. They fell at His feet
in d evotion, and poured out their treas-
ures of gold and franki,n censc and

of all who find Him-heart devotion

and service.

tribulation and persecution are sown
down with joy.
The Apostles seemed anxious to .min-

the foundations is not good. while at

constant self-etamination is not heal-

We again call special to
the Christmas Lovefeast, at the First
Church, at 9:30 a. m., Christmas Day.
For twenty-two years this has been
the standing order among us for this
blessed day. It is a day of joy and
gladness; and nothing can be so appro-
priate as a great LOVEFEAST. In the
past they have been crQwned .

THE MESSENGER .
The one thing not to forgotten in
making Christmas gifts is the MEs-
SENGER. What more gracious gift
could you give to a friend whom you
desired to bless, than to send him or
her this paper, and let it not only tell
them for the whole year of your love,
but be a constant messenger to them
of the grace of Jesus Christ. Not
subscribe for it in their name, but
write them a letter, and tell them you
sent. it. Say a word of your own
appreciation of it, . and tell them of
the blessing it brings, and thus inter-
est them. It is the greatest kind of
opportunity;,_tQ . . , .
Do not forget to renew your own
subsc.ription 'in godd _time. "' ..

connection with the message the fact
was brought out from Old Testament

A CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE.

Miss ' Martin passed in at the
choir loft, she overheard a mur-
mur from a 'group of people, ''That is ,
she-our first so.prano that I told you
about. I can hardly wait for you to
hear her voice."
A slight flush mounted to her fair
face and a that she deserved
the words of praise swelled in her
heart. Had she not struggled np
through many trials to her present high
place in the musical world? Now that
success was hers she would enjoy it to
the full. She unrolled her music and
softly triUed a bar or t wo-not because
she needed . further prepar ation, but
from very joy of being able to warble
like the birds. Just then Mr. Niles, the
pastor, came into the ante-room behind
the great organ.
"Miss Martii1, " he began, then hesi-
tated. " I want to ask a great favor of
you. A few of us are going this after-
noon to the woman's penitentiary to
hold a Christmas service with the in-
mates. Could you, would you go with
us and sing for them?"
Her smile faded. "Oh, Mr. Niles,
how dreadful!'' she exclaimed with a
shiver. .
. "What is dreadful?"
"The whole idea. The penitentiary
-ugh! and this day of all days, to visit
such a ghastly place, but I will consider
it."
The organ was pealing and its deep
tone.s wer e reverberated a mong the
huge pipes. The service moved on
. smoothly-the anthem, scripture lesson,
hymn and prayer; and then her solo-
the event of the morning to others than
the singer. The audience sat through
it as if spellbound and many were in
tears when the last. note died slowly
away. It was over at last and she
passed out, only pausing to say to Mr.
Niles, "I will go with you. You can
count on me for this afternoon.''
So it came about that she was one of
the little group who filed into the peni-
tentiary hall that afternoon, and stood
facing the rows of women sitting there
in prison garb.
Nazarene Messenger
On all four sides wound iron stair-
ways leading to the grated cells four
tiers high. At the front of the hall
stood a white pulpit, a sinall organ arlCt
several chairs. Doors were locked and
windows barred, inside were misery
and wretchedness, outside the blessed
freedom of God's pure air and-Christ-
mas. ,
On the front row sat a woman not
more than thirty-five years old, but
with a seamed and ha'rdened face. She
. stared with sullen, glittering eyes at
Mr. Niles as he read and 'prayed. Many
heads bowed, and sounds of stifled sob-
bing came from different parts of the
room as the sweet story of the first
Christmas was read, but this woman
sat like a statue with compressed lips.
Presently Miss Martin sang. Those
walls had never echoed to sounds more
sweet, for her heart was in the message
as she l#iang of Jesus' birth, His love
and pity. The black eyes did not leave
her face, but gave no sign of feeling.
At the request that those who wished
to be prayed for should make it known,
many hands were raised and yearning
faces were\uplifted, as if pleading for
help. But the woman on the.front seat
did .not move nor take he.r steady gaze
from the beautiful girlish face by the
organ. She sang again-a message of
peace on earth, good will to men, and
as she finished the black eyes dimmed
suddenly and the set .lips whispered,
"Oh, sing again!" She began at once,
without an accompaniment. the gospel
hymn,
"Softly and tenderly Jesus is ,calling."
Every sentence thrilled with en-
treaty as she sang,
Come home, come home!
Yc who weary, come home !"
As she finished the hardened face

sqddenly melted, and a Qroket(
sobbed. out, ' Help me, oh, ! I
do . want to be good;" On the stone
floor they knelt, and there, with deep
penitence and earnest prayer, at last
one sinful soul fQun.d forgiveness.
"It was the singing that did it," the
poor woman said, holding fast to the
firm white hand that did not shrink
from the contact. "I could have re-
sisted all the rest, but not ihatl::..to-day
-Christ's birthday-arid mine.'' The
voice sank to a whisper, but the hard
face glowed with the light of Christ-

adapted for revival work. It contains about forty new songs that h<lvenever

CHRISTMAS IN OUR LIFE.
It was a glorious night when Christ
was born; it was a sad night at noon-
day when He was crucified: The song
of the night was changed to a cry '()f
despair-when night was at noondaj.
It is never the day nor the night that
makes either the song or the cry.
Prisons become palaces, darkness turns
to day-when the Christ is _born, and
enters in. But palaces are prisons, and
the light of noontide sinks into the
darkness of midnight, when He dies-
wh<'n He, "the Friend of sinners," dies.
It is always so, 0 heart of mine. It is
.. Christ living who makes the daydawn _.
rise in thee; it is the Christ departing
"ho leaves the darkness behind, even
though the world may say it is noon-
day; men often say they are in the
light, yet they do not know Him; and
what is worse, they do not care for
Him. '\Vhat can a blind soul know of

GOD'S CHRISTMAS GIFTS.
Bethlehem's first Christmas Day
brought something more than a perfect
example do'wn t o ea!th. If Christ were
only our pattern, then He only in-
creased our hopelessness. He ca!ne to
do greater things than to show us His
p erfect life. God's gift of Christmas
Day to all His eager , expectant chil-
dren are t hese: the r emission of the
death of sin that is past, and
the power to overcome sin in the pres-
t' nt and in t he future. That is the
twofold Christmas salvation, the good
t idings of which the angels are still
singing.
And -\vhile these Christmas gifts can
come only from God, He let us have the
priceless joy and privilege of bearing
them to others. Shall we help to make
this season a true Christmastide to
some who lHtve never yet opened their
h earts to these God's gifts ?-Sunday
School Times.
CHRISTMAS AND MISSIONS.
Christmas brings us a message of
Vv orldwide Evangelization. The gos-
p el of the angels is'li gospel for all the
world. Listen, "Behold, I bring you
good tidings of great .joy which shall
he to all people." And again we hear
them singing. "Glory to God in the
Nazarene MesiJenger.
. . I
highest and on earth. peace, good-will
toward in en." Yet again we h.ear
Simeon say: "Mine eyes hav:e seen Thy_
sahration which. Thou hast prepared be-
fore the face of all people, a light to.
lighten the 'Ge:Qtiles, and the glor'y of
Thy people Isr11el." In Simeon s view
the light was coming first to the Gen-
tiles and afterwards to Israel. So the
Christmas gospel is the gospel for all
the world. ,::We have no right to keep
that light in our little and for
our selfish family circles. The saddest
thing about the eonvention'al Christmas
is its Would it not b:e
Christmas if we should mark it by our
missionary offerings and spend it in our
intercessions for earth's perishing mil-
lions to whom there come no Sabbath
chimes and no Christmas joy.-Se-
lected.
CHISDREN OF THE ROYAL
.At this glad Christmas season let us,
by a whole-hearted reception of the
Chrh;t into our lives, be inducted into
the ioyal iine . of the chil.Qren of the
house of David's greater Son. !Jet us.
so harmonize our wills with the divine,
that every elementof nature shall com-
bine with every purpose of grace to
n1ake our lives a symphony of peace
and joy. Let \ts rememper that the ex-
treme . force of hatred was loosed
against tlte Messiah, and the fiercest
assaults of our enemy are as harmless
as spent bullets to. him who trusts in
the Victor. Let us worship Him in the
beauty of reverent thoughts, humble
minds, and holy hearts, for the Redeem-
er still seeks their worship who worship
in spirit and in truth.-Selected.
THE ONLY SOURCE OF GOOD.
And yet us remember all that is good
comes from God. The benevolence
awakened in the heart of the child at
the mother's knee; or the grayhaired
man, waiting near the close of a well-
spent life; the aged mother, with scars
of heart as numerous as her years; or
the kind offi ce of strong to the weak;
the mite given to charity; the cup of
cold water; the tear springing unbid-
den for another's woes: all are but
foot prints of the Babe of Bethlehem in
the sands of time, 'r'who gave Himself
for us." They should direct the most
thoughtful attention, the strongest and
