Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics V

I. Objectives: Describing and Identifying 5 or more sided polygons Visualizing and Drawing 5 or more sided polygons Finding enjoyment in drawing polygons

II. Subject Matter: 5 or more sided polygons

References: BEC PELC Updated Version- pg. 47 (Grade V) Lesson Guides in Math 5 pg. 223-227 Enfolding Mathematics in Life pg. 246-251

Materials:

cut outs, flash cards, real objects

Value: Cooperation

III. Procedure A. Preliminary Activities Teachers Activity 1. Opening Prayer Before we start our lesson, lets have a prayer first.

Pupils Activity

(The assigned leader will lead the prayer)

2. Greetings Good morning class. Good morning teacher, Good morning classmates its nice to see you again.

Take your seats. 3. Checking of Attendance (The teacher will check the attendance of the pupils by row)

4. Checking of Assignments 5. Motivation Song Class, lets sing a song. What song would you like to sing?

M-A-T-H! M-A-T-H! (2x) Mathematics (2x) Let us count the number (2x) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 number 10.

Lets start our lesson with One Basic Fact a Day. What is our OBFAD for the day?

8 x7

Now 8 x 7 is equal to?

56

Everybody read our OBFAD. 8 x7 56 Very Good!

6. Drill Class, I have here flash cards of different geometric figures. All you have to do is to give me the right answer. Yes mam!

Are you ready? (The teacher will flash the different cards showing the different geometric figures)

Point

-------------

Ray

Plane

Parallel Lines

Intersecting Lines

Skew Lines

Perpendicular Lines

Very Good!

For that great answers. Give yourselves an excellent clap. Begin. (The pupils will do excellent clap) 5. Review Class, what was our last topic? Mam its all about 3 and 4 sided polygons.

Very Good!

Alright, let us see if you can still recall our last topic. Let us have a short game. This is called the Who Am I game. Show me your answer using the show me board as I describe the kind of polygon. Is that clear?

Yes mam!

I am a three sided polygon with three congruent sides. Who am I?

Equilateral triangle

Very Good!

I have one pair of parallel sides. Who am I?

Trapezoid

Very Good!

I am a triangle with three acute angles. Who am I?

Acute triangle

Very Good!

I am a quadrilateral with no parallel sides. Who am I?

General quadrilateral

Very Good!

I am a triangle with no same sides. Who am I?

Scalene triangle

Very Good!

Class for that excellent job. Gove yourselves an excellent clap. Begin.

(Pupils will do excellent clap)

6.Motivation

Alright class look at the wall, what do you see?

We see different pictures/ figures.

Very Good!

Who would like to describe the figures on the wall? Anyone from the group? Get one figure and describe in front of the class.

(The teacher will call somebody to get figure on the wall and describe each figure)

This is a star. It is color yellow. It has 10 sides. Very Good!

This is a house. It is small. It has 5 sides.

Very Good!

This is a clock. It show 2 oclock. It has 8 sides.

Very Good!

This is a lightning. It is powerful. It has 9 sides. Very Good! For that great job. Give yourselves a wonderful clap. Begin.

(Pupils will do wonderful clap)

B.Developmental Activities

1. Presentation I have here in my envelop strips of papers. Out of these strips I can form a polygon.

How many strips do I have? Do you want to know what I can form out of these?

5 strips Yes mam!

(The teacher will connect the 5 strips)

How many sides are there in this figure? Very Good!

There are 5 sides.

This 5 sided polygon is called pentagon.

How many sides are there in this figure?

There are 6 sides.

Very Good! This 6 sided polygon is called hexagon.

How many sides are there in this figure?

There are 7 sides.

Very Good! This 7 sided polygon is called heptagon.

How many sides are there in this figure? Very Good!

There are 8 sides.

This 8 sided polygon is called octagon.

How many sides are there in this figure? Very Good!

There are 9 sides.

This 9 sided polygon is called nonagon.

How many sides are there in this figure? Very Good! This 10 sided polygon is called decagon.

There are 10 sides.

I have here strips of papers. Who would like to form another figure using the strips? (The teacher will call pupils to do the task)

Form octagon.

Very Good!

How about hexagon?

Very Good!

Kindly form nonagon.

Very Good! Form pentagon.

Very Good! And how about heptagon?

Very Good!

How about decagon?

Very Good! Give yourselves an Ang galing galing clap. Begin.

Class, there are still other polygons like:

This figure has 11 sides. This polygon is called undecagon.

Again, what do you call to the polygon that has 11 sides? Very Good!

The polygon that has 11 sides is called undecagon.

This figure has 12 sides. This polygon is called dodecagon.

What do you call to the polygon that has 12 sides? Very Good!

The polygon that has 12 sides is called dodecagon.

This figure has 15 sides. This polygon is called pentadecagon. So what do you call to the polygon that has 15 sides?

The polygon that has 15 sides is called pentadecagon.

Excellent job! Give yourselves an excellent clap.

Generalization: Pentagon- it has 5 sides. Hexagon- it has 6 sides. Heptagon- it has 7 sides. Octagon- it has 8 sides. Nonagon- it has 9 sides. Decagon- it has 10 sides. Undecagon- it has 11 sides. Dodecagon- it has 12 sides. Pentadecagon- it has 15 sides.

Now class what are the standards in doing group activity?

Work cooperatively! Work neatly! Work silently! Finish at the given time! Work quickly!

D. Group Activity

We are going to have a group activity. I will group you into 3, and each group will choose a leader. I will give you each group an envelope. All you have to do is to draw and write the kind of polygon that is being described.

I will give you 5 minutes to finish the activity. The group who will finish first will post your work on the board and do yes clap. Is that clear?

Yes mam! Yes mam! (The pupils will do the activity) Yes mam!

Are you ready class? You may start now.

Finish?

(The teacher will call the leader of each group to explain their work)

E. Fixing Skills Describe the following polygons by filling up the number of sides and angles)

(The teacher will use flash cards)

Octagon Pentagon Hexagon Nonagon Heptagon Decagon

8 sides and 8 angles 5 sides and 5 angles 6 sides and 6 angles 9 sides and 9 angles 7 sides and 7 angles 10 sides and 10 angles

Nice job. Give yourselves a nice clap. Begin.

IV.

Evaluation Draw the following polygon.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Octagon Nonagon Heptagon Decagon Hexagon

V. Assignment: Encircle the polygon. Explain why the others are not polygons.
