Chapter II Methodology

Research Method and Design The descriptive method of research is used in this study. Since descriptive method is a fact finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation of findings that describes what actually exists in current conditions. Consequently, descriptive method of research is best suited in attaining the purpose of this study because this research involved a description, recording, analysis and interpretation of what actually existed in current conditions.

Respondents of the Study The respondents of this study were the 42 students of fourth year, Section V, of Manuel A. Roxas High School. The 42 students were interviewed and undergone tests to successfully determine the result of the study.

Research Instruments The researcher formulated reading comprehension test that was utilized as a survey instrument. The test contains 45 questions based on the three short selections they have read. Procedure After acquiring the necessary permits to conduct the test regarding reading comprehension, it was administered by the researcher himself to the students and collected the answer sheets after completion. Then all data collected were used for interpretation. Statistical Treatment Data analysis was done using the statistical treatment. Rating scale, frequency, and percentage were used to identify the students status in reading comprehension. Chapter III: Presentation, Analysis, Interpretation of Data This chapter presents the results and interpretation from the data gathered in answer to the research problem postulated. Table 1 Performance of the Respondents in Reading Comprehension

Percentage 4-76% 9.52% 14.29% 21.43% 35.72% 9.52% 4.76% 100%

The table showed that 9 or 21.43% of the respondents have an average result in reading comprehension test. Four or 9.52% got the equivalent grade that ranges from 75-79. 15 or 35.72% got the grade that ranges 79-82, 6 or 14.29% grade that ranges 87-90 or 14.29%. It proved that samples had a favourable reading comprehension ability, wherein 2 out of 42 of the total respondents had passed the test. On the other hand, there were more samples that got below average grades than those who got high average grades. It means that those respondents who got below average grades need to strive more to further improve their reading abilities.

In determining the scoring procedures of the students levels in reading comprehension performance, the rating scale below was used.

Excellent Reading Comprehension Performance With in the class limits 96-95 Very Good Reading Comprehension Performance With in the class limits 9194 Good Reading Comprehension Performance With in the class limits 90-87 Average Reading Comprehension Performance With in the class limits 86-83 Low Average Reading Comprehension Performance With in the class limits 82-79 Poor Reading Comprehension Performance With in the class limits 78-74

The table showed that there are 2 or 4.76% students have excellent reading comprehension performance. Four or 9.52% of the total samples had very good reading comprehension performance. Six or 14.29% had good reading

comprehension performance. Nine or 21.43% had average reading comprehension. Six or 14.28% had poor reading comprehension. It showed that majority of the respondents had low average reading comprehension, than those respondents who had above average reading comprehension.

Chapter IV Summary, Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

Summary If we want to be successful in all our endeavours, diligence in studying is important and also it is very essential that we understand what we are reading. Where as, this study is made to determine the reading comprehension ability of the fourth year high school students of Manuel Roxas High School.

Furthermore, this study is sought to answer the following questions. 1. What is the reading comprehension performance of the respondents? 2. What is the reading comprehension level of the respondents? 3. What reading strategy should be adapted by the students to improve the reading comprehension?

For the purpose of this study, the null hypothesis was postulated: There is no significant reading comprehension ability of the fourth year high school students. The findings of this study may be best serve to the teachers to draw plans that can further improve or develop the students reading comprehension ability. There were 42 respondents, who were selected from the fourth year high school students of Manuel Roxas High School. In this research, reading comprehension test was administered to the respondents. Data analysis was done using the following statistical treatments: Rating scale, frequency and percentage.

Findings Based on the analysis, the following are the findings: 1. Nine or 21.43% of the students have an average result in reading comprehension. Twenty one samples or the majority of the respondents got below average result and only 12 samples have above average result. Otherwise, 40 out of the total respondents passed on the test. 2. The highest frequency of 15 or 35.72% indicated that the students have low average level of reading comprehension. Only two or 4.76% have excellent level of reading comprehension performance, and 6 or 14.28% have poor level of reading performance.
