The Golden Ticket

Words of Becoming
“A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” ~Proverbs 25:11

To a large degree, our children will become what we tell them they are. If we tell our
children they are clumsy, forgetful or stupid, they will be clumsy, forgetful or stupid. How we
react to our children’s shortcomings - when they spill their breakfast cereal, when they leave
their assignment for class at home, or when they return from a friend’s house an hour late -
determines what they will think of themselves and what they will become.
In Genesis 49, Jacob blesses each of his sons, speaking “words of becoming” over them.
We can do the same. We can start feeding our children praise in the ordinary moments of our
days. Give it like a vitamin supplement at each meal. Offer it for midday snacks. Serve it for a
substantial dessert. No matter what the age of our children, it’s never too late to include the all-
important nutrient of affirmation in their diet.
At two, twelve or twenty-two, what we tell them they are, our children will become.
What we say is what we’ll get.
~By Elisa Morgran from the Mom’s Devotional Bible, NIV
