LUBRICATION The engine is lubricated by oil mixed with the fuel. Correct fuel-oil ratio is 20:1 on models with JLO or Kohler engine, and 25:1 on models equipped with Sachs engine. On Model 707 with open drive chain, the chain should be lubricated with a few drops of light oil occasionally.

When vehicle is stored, remove chain and wash in kerosene or other suitable solvent. Store the chain by submerging in oil in a suitable covered pan. The spray-type chain cleaner and chain lubricant designed for motorcycle use is also effective for open chains. On 1968 and later models the drive chain is enclosed and runs in an oil bath. The enclosed chaincase should contain 6-8 ounces of SAE 30 Motor Oil to lubricate the chain. Oil may be added through plug hole (D-Fig. 2).

On models without plug hole, tip machine on right side and remove cover (C-Fig, 3). The case should contain about V2-pint of SAE 20 engine oil. Ski legs on Model 707 were equipped with renewable nylon bushings and were not lubricated. Later models have pressure fittings and should be lubricated occasionally with Low Temperature Alouette Grease. Track drive axles and bogie wheels are equipped with sealed bearings and do not require lubrication.

ADJUSTMENT

Alouette
All 1968 through 1971 and some later machines are equipped with a shoe-type brake as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. Brake must not drag when hand lever is released but must fully engage before hand lever contacts handlebar grip. Wear adjustment is made at brake cable anchor housing by turning nuts (A and B-Fig. 4). Most 1972 and 1973 machines are equipped with caliper type disc brake. First make sure that brake push pins center in valleys of actuating arm cam and that brake unit properly aligns with friction surface of driven pulley. Align if necessary by loosening the attaching bracket bolts and firmly applying brake. Center push pins by adjusting brake cable housing anchor nuts. Brake wear adjustment is made by turning actuating lever stud nut until pucks touch pulley then backing nut off approximately Vz-turn. TRACK. To adjust track tension, raise rear of vehicle until track is clear of ground. On Model 707, refer to Fig. 5. Measure the distance (A-B) from top edge of bogie wheel support shaft bracket to top edge of track midway between track axles. Distance (A-B) should be 5%-6 inches and equal on both sides of machine. On 1968 through 1970 models, refer to Fig. 6. Measure the distance (A) from lower edge of rear idler bearing housing to edge of frame. Distance should be 3%-inches and equal on both sides. Loosen the two clamp bolts (1^Fig. 5 or 6) and turn adjusting bolt (2) until tension is correct.

STEERING SKIS. On early models, disconnect tie rod from left steering arm and adjust length of rod as necessary until skis are parallel when pointing straight ahead. Shorten or lengthen steering drag link if necessary, until handle bars are in normal straight driving position. Late models are equipped with two steering rods which must be disconnected at one end for adjustment. Steering rods must be of equal length and must be installed in front hole in steering arm. DRIVE CHAIN ADJUSTMENT. Roller drive chain should have approximately y4-inch of free play when measured midway between sprockets. On Model 707, free play can be directly measured and adjustment can be made by moving bolt (7-Fig. 1) downward in slot (S). If bolt bottoms in slot, remove the bolt and reinstall in the other hole (H) in eccentric housing (5). Models with enclosed drive chain should have some slack but free play cannot be directly measured. Chain tension can be determined by measuring the backlash (A and B - Fig. 2 or A - Fig. 3) while rocking torque converter driven sheave. Adjustment is correct when backlash measures %-inch at pulley rim. Adjust by loosening the locknut and turning adjusting screw (B-Fig. 2 or C-Fig. 3). BRAKE. Model 707 and most 1972 models are equipped with a caliper type disc brake. Refer to TRACK DRIVE section of this manual for adjustment procedure.

On models with bogie wheel suspension, loosen pivot bolt nut (A-Fig. 7) and turn adjusting bolt (B). Both sides must be adjusted alike. On 1973 Sno Brute with slide suspension, loosen clamp screws (1-Fig. 8) and turn adjusting screws (2). Ride and weight adjustment is made by turning spring anchor nuts (3).
NOTE: Whenever track tension has been adjusted, alignment MUST be checked as outlined In TRACK SERVICE Section ot this manual. Pig, 9-Chain case, Intermediate shaft and associated parts used on late models.
