NEW DELHI: Housewives may soon start getting monthly salaries from their husbands with the government mulling a proposal which would make it mandatory for men to share a certain percentage of their income with their wives who stay back and do household chores. The proposal is being considered by Women and Child Development (WCD) ministry for socioeconomic empowerment of homemakers. "We have got a survey conducted on this theme and are planning to hold more consultations about this plan, which at present is in consultation stage... Whenever we ask housewives what they do, most of them say they do nothing. So we feel that a mechanism can be devised to quantify and calculate the value of work that they do for their families. It will give a more socially empowered identity to these women," WCD minister Krishna Tirath told PTI. She said the idea, mooted by some NGOs, would also be discussed in a meeting to be held with ministers of different states on September 17-18. "The work that women do at home is also economic activity but it goes unaccounted. If children are sent to a creche, then money has to be spent. If somebody from outside does cooking or any other work, money has to be spent. And the quality of work of homemakers cannot even be compared with others," Tirath said. The minister said if a portion of a husband's income is allocated as wife's share, it is likely to be spent on better food for children, on their education and the overall quality of standard of living of that household. "Working in homes is economic activity and if this is recognised, it will give us a truer reflection of what the GDP of our country is. It will also help us know more accurate figure of the rate of real unemployment in the country," Tirath said.

Indian law is highly biased against men. I wonder if the same 'law' will apply to women who work while their husbands sit at home and do all the household chores. It's high time to kick the f@c%ing individuals who propose such bizarre laws to get their five minutes of publicity.

It is none of the business of Government to meddle with the private lives of the citizens. By passing this bill the government will play havoc with the traditional lives of a family. It will create another source of contention in the family, sow the seeds of discord between husband and wife, give ample opportunity to the unscrupulous lawyers always lurking around to make vulnerable people their victims. What is needed are the rights of better protection for women in case of divorce ( talaq), demise of husband. They are often left at the mercy of males in the family and silent sufferers of the tragedy. But the nincompoop congress government at the center which can not deliver any other progress in areas of economy, health care, corruption, improvement of sanitation, infra structure etc, will take up such topics as payment to homemaker. Indeed Sonya Gandhi is shooting at the basic Hindu way of life mounting her guns on the shoulders of totally ineffective prime minister.

Salary - is the wife the employee of the husband? By the same logic is the husband the employer of the wife? Would that not mean that the husband should get to decide what the wife should do? And what should be the working hours? And what should happen outside those working hours? Should she cease being a wife? Do these people even understand that they are planning to wreck the institution of marriage??

Good news for women who marry for money. I am sure they will never spend their earned money on children or for the household. They will say the government have forced our husbands to give us salaries for our household works. Therefore, the money is our own. Next, this payment of salaries to the wives will certainly take away the sanctity of married lives. They can not be regarded as wives any more, but servants of the house.

The government should stop this nautanki of raising extraneous issues to either divert attention or seek some ill-deserved praise. It should focus instead on corruption removal, bringing criminal politicians to book, recovering Black money and developing infrastructure.

What a stupid idea the govt is thinking towards treating a housemaker (wife) is a worker in the house and demanding a remuneration from the husband for this. Here the family concept is destroyed. If a wife is regarded as a workman, the govt does ask to document it in a labour contract with the husband. As per the labour-contract, the incidence of tax cannot be ignored. Later on, producing children is like a production activity; for which excise duty be chargeable. In the fool paradise of India, the family concept is considered equal to a workplace. This kind of school of thought will not found in the rest of the world.

this is ok for salaried class. What about wives of business men ,politicians ,ministers, governors and President. If this subject is taken up in Parliament all the sessions winter, summer, monsoon and budget would be fully attended by MPs without any stalling or walkouts. doodu chennai 9 th sep
I think its a good idea if implemented correctly. It will help the lady of the house save a fixed amount every month that can come in handy on a rainy day. In households where the male chief wage earner is known to blow away his salary on drinking, gambling etc., it will allow the lady to manage neccessary household expenses. It will allow the lady to fend for herself and have at least some security in unfortunate incidents like separation. I think it should be made mandatory for employers to deduct this approved percentage of the male employee's salary and pay it in favour of his spouse of course, the IT department should also encourage this by reducing the male employee's tax liability to the extent of the deduction made in favour of his spouse.
It is a commendable idea which will definitely empower women of the country but it has to be seen as to how this idea can be implemented. In India we make lots of rules and regualtions but implementation remains a problem. Thereore before it is given a final shape all the pros and cons must be studied properly and delivery mechanism must be put in place for avoiding any fiasco.

All laws must be common for genders irrespective of distinguishing male/female, husband/wife; instead it should give a neutral name like spouse where in both gets protection & benefit. Only then we can say justice is dispensed with true sense.
And there is a case when house wife do literally nothing and still gets paid.. What is wrong with this society. Gender equality is must but like this... and what if women is bread earner and husband sitting at home will they also be paid? or then social workers with start preaching you can do anything why sitting at home, discrimination should not be the base while floating any policy both genders must be treated equally.
Govt should not interfere in family matters. Its difficult to get a job now a days and to meet ends is difficult, and if now we have to give salary to wife also is utter nonsense. People may then try to get a wife who is ready to work without salary. Its better govt sticks to its guns on development than encroaching into family affairs.
What a crazy proposal! Will they then charge for sleeping with their husbands ? It sure will bring in a whole new meaning to the relationship :)
Good idea to make family a corporate affair. The person who pays higher salary and other perks will get a better deal. There will not be love and bonding in family anymore in the family. What about working women? Will they be allowed to be free from household activities or a double salary?
the amount which has to be paid to wife as salary should be tax exempted by govt.
Most interesting idea which has come up in years ! Will love to read what people think about this proposal.
At the outset it's stupid idea to start putting a price on Homemakers work. But if Govt. gives tax breaks for amount of salary given to spouse and she also accountable for tax filing etc. then there is surely some merit in it. So single person earning family feel some pride in saving extra tax money.
govt please do not interfere in family matters so please keep this matter in cold storage or else face the consequences

By bringing money in relation they are making it a contract between husband and wife Or may be u can say that adulterating the husband and wife relation . It will create more problems them solving .
This will sound the death knell to the institution of marriage - if this payment of salary becomes mandatory. Most hubbies give money anyway out of love to their wives not because she cooks, cleans, raises children etc. But the moment it becomes mandatory & a right of a wife, then men would rather go for a mistress / live in relationship. As such relationships can be terminated at will without going for Alimony & court cases. This UPA govt. - has destroyed each and every Sacrosanct institutions - be it army, Police, CAG, CVC, CBI, Judiciiary, Educational institutions like IIT, IIMs, AIIMS etc. The last bastion of a HOME - that also they want to destroy. Only place for CONGRESS party is the shit-house of each society. Throw them out Lock, stock & barrel, this coming elections be it in 2013, or 2014.
