Summary of the main learning outcomes for students participating in the field experience activity: At the end of the rotation the students will be able to: a. Apply the steps of the Nursing Process in the care of paediatric patients. b. Perform basic Nursing procedures indicated to paediatric patients. c. Describe normal growth and development from infancy to adolescence. d. Measure the anthropometric measurement. 2. Briefly describe any plans for developing and improving the field experience activity that are being implemented: Update Clinical Focus Change in teaching strategies, from more procedural to include knowledge and attitude in approach. Adapt appropriate teaching strategies. See attached clinical focus per area. 3. Learning Outcomes in Domains of Learning ( Specific Objectives) 2

The methods of student assessment to be used in the course to evaluate learning outcomes in the domain concerned. (Note that the objectives of the field experience may not include all of the domains and the items should be completed only for kinds of learning the field experience activity is intended to develop) a. Knowledge (i) Description of the knowledge to be acquired: At the end of the exposure, the students will be able to: a. Define terms related to paediatric nursing. b. Discuss normal growth and development of an infant, toddler, preschooler, school age and adolescent. c. Identify physical and developmental birth defects/disorders based on handled cases. d. Enumerate common respiratory, gastrointestinal, hematologic, urinary disorders/ diseases. e. Recall nursing interventions used in the care of children with diseases. f. Enumerate common or basic nursing procedures in the unit of assignment. g. Overview of immunization schedules. h. Cite standards of infection control policies. (ii) What will be done to develop that knowledge: a. Chart reading ( interactive discussion) b. Individual tutorials during consultation time of clinical instructors. c. Cognitive Skills (i) Description of cognitive skills to be developed: At the end of the exposure, the students will be able to: a. Discern deviations from normal growth and development of infants to adolescence. b. Recognize common illnesses that affect pediatrics. c. Identify common physical birth disorders. d. Relate clinical manifestations of podiatric patients with respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and hematologic disorders/diseases. e. Interpret blood laboratory findings and relate to patients condition. f. Formulate nursing diagnoses. (ii) What will be done to develop these cognitive skills: a. Discuss the NANDA nursing diagnoses. b. Formulate nursing diagnoses through actual clinical condition of pediatric clients. c. Write appropriate independent, dependent and collaborative nursing interventions according to the care ( at least 2 priority problems) 3

Use appropriate pediatric assessment tool in clinical area assigned (see attached) b. Develop a Nursing Care Plan based on assessment findings. c. Rubric on checking Case study (see attached) c. Interpersonal Skills and Responsibility (i) Description of the interpersonal skills and capacity to carry responsibility to be developed: At the end of the exposure, the students will be able to: a. Communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients and parents. b. Establish rapport and working relationship to patient, patients significant others and hospital staff. c. Report abnormal findings to preceptor. d. Work with classmate or group. e. Demonstrate professional standard of ethics. (ii) What will be done to develop these skills and abilities: a. Observe the manner the student ask questions or interact with the patient and relatives to collect the needed data. b. Cooperate with fellow students in performing certain procedure. c. Health education for the child / families. (iii) Methods of assessment of skills and abilities developed: a. Use of evaluation tool for area assigned and health teaching (see attached) d. Communication, Information Technology and Numerical Skills: (i) Description of the numerical and communication skills to be developed: At the end of the exposure, the students will be able to a. Demonstrate ability to communicate with staff, family and patients according to their level of understanding. b. Utilizes internet search for self learning. c. Compute IV fluids rate and drug dosages. (ii) What will be done to develop these skills: a. Individual patient assignment / research / updates. b. Give problem solving computation using the patients present IV Fluid and medications. (iii) Methods of assessment of skills developed: a. Use of evaluation tool for area assigned (see attached) b. Paper and pencil computation using formula for IV therapy rate and drug dosage. e. Psychomotor Skills (i) Description of the psychomotor skills to be developed and the level of performance required: At the end of the exposure, the students will be able to a. Demonstrate technique in doing physical assessment to patients. b. Perform basic nursing procedures. (see attached clinical focus) c. Apply infection control policies and procedures. d. Perform safety measures as indicated. (ii) What will be done to develop these skills: a. Demonstration and return demonstration b. Bedside health teaching. 4

c. Health teaching. d. Discharge follow up instruction. (iii) Methods of assessment of psychomotor skills: a. Use of checklists (see attached) b. Use of evaluation tool (see attached) C Description of Field Experience Activity 1. At what stage or stages during the program does the field experience occur? 4th Year 5th week after lecture/demonstration and return demonstration of students in the Pediatric skill lab. 2. Organizational structure (e.g. single time block, distributed time blocks, recurrent schedule of XXX days per week): Laboratory training: Week 1 to Week 3 Hospital training: Week 4 to Week 8 Number of hours/week over 8 weeks = Total contact hours 2 days/week over 7.5 weeks 12 hours/week over 7.5 weeks = 90 Contact hours/Credit hours (Note: Refer to rotation plan.) 3. Student Activities Describe the principal activities in which the students will be involved during the field experience: a. Orientation of the students on the following : - Physical set-up of the hospital - Personnel / organizational chart - Ward / unit set up, supplies, instruments and equipments - Protocols, policies and procedures of the hospital - Patients medical records and forms - Grading system and requirements such as attendance, performance evaluation, nursing care plan, case study. b. Reading of patients chart with understanding. c. Gather health history and do physical examination. d. Formulate nursing care plan. e. Assess gestational age of Newborn. f. Perform nursing procedures like checking vital signs, anthropometric measurements, bathing, feeding, restraining, initiating IV fluid therapy, administering medications, oxygen therapy and suctioning. g. Schedule bedside health teaching or mother class. h. Schedule individual Case Study 4. Student assignments or reports b. When are these assignments or reports a. Title or description required? a. Nursing Care Plan (Individual) On the second week of exposure. Performed, completed and submitted on the same - Perform comprehensive nursing day assessment, formulate plan of care, do appropriate interventions and evaluate the care rendered. b. Case Study (Individual) One or two Students per week to assigned preceptors in the clinical area.

c. Individual assignments based on students Case.

Every first day of duty. Submitted on the 2nd day of exposure.

5. Follow up with Students. What arrangements are made for follow up with students to reflect on their experiences and apply what they have learned to future situations? (E.g. Seminars or tutorials, individual consultations, reference in subsequent courses, etc.): a. Individual consultation Every Wednesdays 8:00 am 12:00noon at Faculty Office b. Library Hours Daily 8:00pm 3:00pm 6. Responsibilities of Supervisory Staff in the Field. Describe the main responsibilities of supervising staff working in the field location. (e.g. Planning activities for students development of skills, advice to students, assessment of performance): a. Conducts orientation for students on hospital policies and organizational structure. b. Disseminate updates in nursing care. 7. Responsibilities of Supervisory Faculty from the Institution. Describe the main responsibilities of supervising faculty from the institution, (e.g. Consultation, planning with and advice to field supervisors and students, student assessment, time expectations for visits, etc.): a. Assess and evaluates student performance objectively using standardize procedural checklists and evaluation tools in every area. 8. Arrangements for student guidance and support: a. Consultation hours for students concerns every Sunday (6hours per week) 9. What facilities and support are required at the field experience location? (if any): a. Accommodation Conference room for students and preceptors use. b. Computer resources - Access to internet. c. Learning support materials Updated paediatric books d. Other Access to patients chart and other forms available in the unit for students learning. D Planning and Preparation 1. Identification of Field Placements. What processes are used to identify appropriate field placements? a. Meeting/Conferences the lecturer must enumerate skills learned in the classroom to be performed in the clinical area. b. Assessment / Evaluation Checklists, evaluation tools must be revised, focusing not only on the steps of the basic nursing procedures but also on the attitude and knowledge of students. 2. Preparation of Field Supervisors. Briefly describe and indicate timing of arrangements made to ensure full understanding of roles and responsibilities of supervising faculty/staff in the field setting. (For example, briefing meetings and follow up consultation, training, staff development, notes for guidance.): a. Meeting with the head of the department and the clinical coordinator to identify ways and strategies to achieve set objectives for the exposure. b. Orientation and reorientation of the preceptors in the area of assignment in the hospital. 3. Preparation of Students. Briefly describe and indicate timing of arrangements made for preparation of students for participation in the field experience activity. (Cross reference to any written notes provided): a. Skills Laboratory Demonstration and return demonstration of the basic nursing skills in the laboratory, to make the students equipped with technical know how in operating machines, equipments for the 6

patients treatment. b. Orientation programs as to policies in the clinical area, evaluation tools, hospital, unit of assignment and requirements. 4. Safety and Risk Management. Describe process used to ensure safety and identify potential risks to students, persons with whom they work, or facilities where they will be located, and strategies to minimize and protect against those risks (including insurance arrangements): a. Infection Control Program b. Required immunization prior to exposure c. Hazard / Risk Insurance E Student Assessment 1. Basis for Assessments. List the major performance criteria or matters considered in deciding on student grades. These may include assessments of work performance and personal characteristics and written reports of assignments. Case Study 10 points e. Midterm Exam 20 points f. Final Exam 40 points TOTAL 100 points 2.Field Supervisors Responsibility for Assessment. Describe the responsibility of supervising staff in the field location for student assessment: There must be a clear protocol on how and the extent of a field supervisors responsibility in assessing students and preceptors in the unit. 3. Supervising Faculty Responsibility for Assessment. Describe the responsibility of supervising faculty from the institution for student assessment: Assess if there are limitations to perform certain procedures that are available in the unit. Note any procedure available to add for the incoming semester. 4 Resolution of Differences in Assessments. If supervising staff in the field location and faculty from the institution share responsibility for student assessment, what process is followed for resolving any differences between them? Brainstorming or regular staff meeting to come up with uniform assessment scheme. F Evaluation of the Field Experience 1. Arrangements for evaluation of field experience activity by: a. Students: Periodic course evaluation Questionnaire done by students after each semester b. Supervising staff in the field setting: Feedback from the Head Nurse and Staff nurses as to scope activities covered in the area Preparing and submitting clinical focus by preceptors for each area covered during the field experience period. Supervising staff in various clinical areas c. Supervising faculty from the institution: Supervising faculty submitting field experience report at the end of the semester Gathering feedbacks from the Preceptors regarding the scope of activities covered; 7

Submitting Clinical Instructors Hospital Visit Record Form. e. Others(e.g. graduates, independent evaluator, etc.) Checking a sample of marking by an independent college member. 2. Describe the planning arrangements for periodically reviewing the effectiveness of the field experience and planning for improvement: Departmental meeting at the end of each semester to review results of course evaluation questionnaire, student outcomes, weakness, strengths and course teachers recommendations for improvement which mentioned in course reports Annual reviews and updates of course specification according to field and scientific updates Plan for improvement and revision of field experience specification according to course report at the end of each semester. Regular departmental meetings (every two months) to represent student achievement, issues, problems, and student weaknesses.
