Bronze for FIAT

UMK sent a contingent to MTE 2013, submitting 8 product during the Malaysian Technology Expo (MTE) held at the Putra World Trade Centre from the 21st to 23rd February, with FIAT submitting one inven ti on. Proj ec t leader for the Hm breeding Chamber for commercial upscalling of leeches, Mr. Zulhisyam Abdul Kari @ accompanied by the Dean, Prof.

Ahmad Anwar Ismail who is also co-inventor manage to grab a bronze during the 3 day exhibition. Overall, the university obtained 4 silver and 2 bronze. This was the first time UMK participated in MTE, shows how research at UMK can be on par with the other well established institution. This is also a good start for FIAT for the year 2013.

Postgraduate Research Colloquium

A 2 day postgraduate research colloquium (PGRC) semester 1, 2013 was successfully held at UMK Jeli Campus on the 2nd and 3rd of January. The colloquium was participated by the postgraduate students for both FIAT and Faculty of Earth Science. The purpose of the colloquium was to provide a platform for postgraduates to present their research and current progress, while obtaining feedback on their respective projects. On the 27th January, Mr. Shaiful Azman Abdul Rahman attended a ruminant feed processing workshop organized by Kelantan Biotech Corp. Sdn. Bhd. The workshop seminar was held at the Rural Transformation Center, Tunjong, Kota Bharu. The first talk was on green forage and agricultural waste as alternative animal

feed was given by Datuk Dr. Mohd Zairi Haji Serlan, the Director of Kelantan Department of Veterinary. The second speaker, Mr. Hassan Zainudi n, Manage r Perkhidmatan Industri Tenusu Pasir Puteh, Kelantan meanwhile gave a talk on the use of commercial feed and its effect on farm economy. was given by Mr. Nasir Jamaludin Ab. Rahman, who delivered a talk on the formulation and production of feed. Study cases were put forward and discussed during the workshop, first on genetically modified food, and the second on the effect of logging and food security issues on orang asli settlements in Gua Musang. Ultimately, food security does not focus solely on sustainable food production, but also the economic status, political stability and social livelihood of the society within a country.

FIAT participated in the Bio-Kelantan International Carnival 2013 (BIO-K) and set up booth to promote the faculty. The theme for B I O - K 2 0 1 3 , Mengembalikan Kegemilangan Tamadun Islam Melalui Bioteknologi focuses on agriculture, health and industrial biotechnology

was held from the 28th of February to 2nd of March at the Kelantan Trade Center in Kota Bharu. The purpose of the carnival was to encourage biotechnology activities and the involvement of both private and government agency in the development of the state of Kelantan.

The SEAASS-Net 1st Annual Meeting in session

The 1st (South East Asia Animal Science Student Networking) (SEAASSNet was held at UiTM Perlis on the 30th January was participated by students from Indonesia; Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Jambi University (Unja), Lampung University (Unila), and Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed). Malaysia was represented by students form Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Technology MARA (UiTM) Perlis, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). A seminar was also held on the same day where 8 papers were presented. FIAT MSc student, Dr. Adnan Ismail presented a paper entitled Evaluation of Performance Potential in Kedah Kelantan (KK) Cattle (Bos indicus ) In Tanah Merah Nucleus Herd . The Next annual meeting will be hosted by UMS.
