Ok, so few days back UPSC released the much awaited notification for 2013 Click me. So you already know, what is changed. It is a stale news. This article is j ust an overview article for future approach. I ll upload a full fledged strategy / approach / studyplan for General studies (Ma ins), combined with all list of topics to be prepared, resources, downloads etc. after preliminary exam is over, because such exercise can take days and weeks. Right now, my time and energy is better utilized covering articles on current af fairs and aptitude relevant from prelims point of view. You too should not waste your time digging around Mains material (or debating ab out the change on various online forums), because given the number of days left, f irst priority should be= reading, revision and practice for prelims. What is not changed? Age- attempt limit is not changed. Age is still counted on 1st August of the given year. (rumor market said UPSC wa s planning to count age on 1st Jan.) Vacancies are almost the same (2012: 1037 vacancies, 2013: approx. 1000) Mains to Interview quota is same (twice the number of vacancies. It was same in 2011 and 2012) Prelims syllabus is not changed even one bit. (so the approach / strategy for pr elims remains one and same.) Prelims approach Approach to general studies for prelims, already given long time ago. Here is jus t a checklist, ask yourself:

I ve finished reading NCERT, NIOS, Yearbook, Laxmikanth etc. (+static topics from GS Manual) multiple times. I ve rock solid command over them (or I ll be revising th em often until I get rock solid command). I ve tried/ will try myself with the MCQs given in GS Manual. For aptitude, I m doing maximum practice at night (so I don t fall asleep by simply reading some book). That s Well and good, you re on right track. Now the question that bothers a lot of candidates: What about the current affairs? Current affairs itself is quite big. But for prelims, you ve to concentrate only o n the current affairs associated with specific sectors: High priority current affairs Environment n biodiversity Science tech Polity Economy. Yearbook stuff (Government schemes/ org. etc) Low priority current affairs International relations. Misc.GK (Sports, awards, persons in news, books, authors etc): Lists already giv en for 2012 and 13 click me If you ve been maintaining notes out of Hindu/Indianexpress past one year, that s to tally awesome. Just keep doing it. But those of you, who joined the game late and or did not diligently read newspa pers/maintained notes. What to do now? Here is a firefighting tip. Do any one of the following Option A: Get a book called Wizard s Current Affairs 2013. (they publish it every year. Plea se note, other publication houses also release similar books. Use whatever is ea sily available to you.) It doesn t guarantee UPSC is directly going to asks questions from it. But such b ook gives an overview of what happened past one year (in topicwise fashion: bil ateral, sci-tech etc.) The book itself is quite thick but you don t have to prepare everything, just conc entrate on the high priority areas. Then you dig internet, standard reference bo oks etc. for topics that are directly indirectly related to it and are basic in na ture. For example, there is news about Libya, then you check Libya s location in t he map, its capital, its bordering nations and so on. There is some news about E astern Dedicated freight corridor, then you dig out from which states does this corridor pass through? ..Prelims is not about Ph.D. Prelims is mostly about trick y questions from very basic concepts / facts. Option B: hit the public library. Pick past 1 years current affairs magazines (CST, Chronic le, PD, Wizard..whatever is available). Go through the first 20-25 pages :the important national international affairs a re given here. And Remaining pages of magazines is usually filler material (toppers interviews a nd recycled articles on polity), you can read them if you ve time and mood. But from those first 20-25 pages, note down the exam worthy current affairs, com e back home dig net +/- standard reference books as and where required. ^Please note, these option A / B are just firefighting tools. They d work fine for SSC, SBI type exams. But Current affairs for UPSC is a different game altogethe r. That s the reason I ve always advised people to read daily newspapers and maintai n notes out of it. As a UPSC aspirant, Current affairs must be part of your dail y routine. If you don t do it on dailybasis, that s when you ve to turn to such (not s

o reliable) ^firefighting tools. And don t put too much of your time in current affairs, because lot of questions c ome from static part (theory) too. Another concern is regarding Cutoffs possibly getting high because IFoS and IAS ha ve common preliminary exam. My point is: Just read revise and practice. Leave re st in the hands of God. Don t enter the exam hall with the cut off mindset or nega tive marking will dig your grave. ============================================================== After 2days feedback sheets given by you, we have decided to give u a detailed l ist of material books to be used. Remember this is only for Sankalp students app earing in 2013 and attending weekends batch, and finding less time to study. Clearing Prelims is all about doing same things again and again from a single so urce, and not running for study material here and there. 1. Indian Polity by M Laxmikant No any second source. Just one book. There is no alternative to it. You must rea d it at least 5-10 times. Dont make notes. Its not possible. Read every line and when u read every chapter, every line 4-5 times, u will remember most of it. he re u shud be able to answer any question that comes from anywhere in the book. No need to make seperate notes of this book, just mark important points and memo rize them.Keep a track of current affairs and study the themes and concepts from this book. 2. Indian History NCERT 7 to 10 Social Science. Then NCERT Class 11,12 History. a)Refer to the quiz questions as given by Madam and discussions following them v ery religiously. This actulaly saves ur 50% Time. b)Also, refer Spectrums handbook of modern history..its useful as many snippets are found in this. But a GS Manual and MCQ ,studied in GD is seriosuly recommend ed. c) U will get many MCQ's from GS Manual(Recommened= Tata McGraw Hill....Study me thod=Group Discussions in class) 3. Geography - NCERT Social Sciences 7-10 & then Indian geography books (2 of them) 11th & 12 th NCERT. Again do 4-5 times. Any question coming from it should be answerable. Dont be the fool who has read the book but is not able to answer question from it. Dont just learn facts, but try to know the answeres to questions "why"..supplement this by current affairs part...eg: locate Singapore on the map,is it a nation? if u r not able to answer , it means u r not honest in ur effort. You have to do all of the above. Again,U will get many MCQ's from GS Manual (Recommened= Tata McGraw Hill....Stud y method=Group Discussions in class) 4. Indian economy For best strategy, you will need to have a two level approach:a_)NCERT (10, 11, 12). If you can t grasp formulas, leave them. Just try to unders tand the basics only b)Regular reading of Economy section of newspaper (The Hindu or Indianexpress, w hichever you can get.) c) Notes of Vajiram or Shreerams IAS, Now in our Library,These contain static ma terial( theory) & need to be supplemented with current affairs( everyy Sunday Cu rrent affairs sessions in class) 5. Ecology & Environment, & General Sciences: refer class notes.

CSAT Paper-2 Practise tests in class and as recommened by faculty. Rest of the books will be mailed in later stages. To be clear, if we are scoring less in GS, prelims or mains it only because of l ack of honest and hard work. Its not possible to NOT clear prelim after having d one all of the above 5-6 times. honesty ,Consistency, hard work & discipline is required. In a nutshell, Maintain your current affairs notes, Don t look for shortcuts. If you get some good coaching note, use it to upgrade your own notes. ================================================================================ =============================================== I am trying to give you full plan, please follow it religiously. Clearing Prelim s is all about doing same things again and again from a single source, and not r unning for study material here and there. 1. Indian Polity by M Laxmikant[click] No any second source. Just one book. Ther e is no alternative to it. You must read it at least 5-10 times. Dont make notes . Its not possible. Read every line and when u read every chapter, every line 45 times, u will remember most of it. here u shud be able to answer any question that comes from anywhere in the book. 2. Indian History - Spectrum Modern India by Rajiv Ahir[click] . It is a summary of Bipin Chandra's India's Struggle for Independence . every question in last p relims and before that which was in "ANSWERABLE" category (some questions are no t to be answered by anyone - dont waste time and energy on finding where those q uestions came from). The debate over Bipan Chandra vs Spectrum will be saved for later times. 3. Geography - You will need to do 3 books here. For Principles of Geography Just do Go Cheng Leong - Certificate Physical & Huma n Geography[click] line by line 4-5 times - every chapter..dont by-heart, but re ad closely..only memorise conecpets. This is the single book for most Geography concepts. Chapters are short and easy to understand. Note:- Three topics , namely :- Monsoons -EL Nino -La Nina is not given very well here, and it is not sufficient from UPSC point of view. Y ou will have to take help from your geography optional friends and either unders tand it from them or get their notes. - Indian geography books (2 of them) 11th & 12th NCERT. Again do 4-5 times. Any question comin from it should be answerable. Dont be the fool who has read the b ook but is not able to answer question from it. if u r not able to answer, it me ans u r not honest in ur effort. You have to do all of the above.(Not my Lines; copied from source ) 4. Indian economy - For best strategy, you will need to have a two level approac h:-

1. TMH Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh[click] I struggled with Economy for a long time since I did not have it neither in school nor in college. I struggled with Vajiram Economy tests and even Khan's Economy questions until I read this book. I am not saying that this is a must read, but it will give you amazing confiden ce. It is a must read if you don't have access to Vajiram or any other coaching teacher. I was able to be in top 50 in Vajiram test series once I had done Econo my from here. What it does not have? - Not good enough for mains. 2. You may want to read either Vajiram Economy class notes OR Sriram's IAS Econo my notes . This will help you for both Prelims as well as mains. Again..reading is to be line by line..every chapter..at least 5-6 times. You wil l see ur knowledge grow by leaps and bounds. And GS will be conquerable. Magazine Read at least one magazine every month - dont change ur magazine - try chronicle or wizard. You should have all issues of past one year when u write pr elims. To be clear, if we are scoring less in GS, prelims or mains it only because of l ack of honest and hard work. Its not possible to NOT clear prelim after having d one all of the above 5-6 times. honest , hard work discipline is required. Why it is getting difficult is because everyone else is doing it. So if u are no t doing it, u lose. I was scoring around 115-120 in GS paper..So anyone who has not scored that much will say that its not possible to score that much. But that is what i said when i was near cut -off in my 1st attempt, my seniors used to g et net 70-90 out of 150 questions correct while i got 40-50 correct - i used to say 70-90 is impossible.
