Business

An energy self-sufficient India can alter the economic, political and manufacturing landscape of the region. Its quest for energy will create new economic and strategic challenges, right from mobilising capital to engaging in subtle diplomacy.

IndianOils own performance in the financial year 2006 -07 was a case of 'exceeding expectations' with both turnover and profits reaching new highs, product sales registering a quantum jump, and the refineries as well as pipelines network enhancing their capacities beyond 60 MMTPA and registering record throughputs. New projects worth Rs. 10,000 crore were put on stream during the year. Among new businesses, the petrochemicals and natural gas verticals and participating interests in a clutch of oil & gas assets in India and abroad has ensured expansion of the upstream portfolio.

IndianOil has ambitious investment plans of Rs. 43,250 crore in the next five years. By 2011-12, the IndianOil Group, with 80 MMTPA refining capacity in its fold, would be playing a key role in realising Indias bid to emerge as an export-oriented hub for finished products. The pipelines network, which provides strategic logistics advantage to the marketing operations, is also set to cross the 10,000 km mark in the next two years.

In marketing, IndianOil is set to leverage the combined strength of over 32,000 marketing touch points, with focus on hitherto untapped rural markets, non-fuel revenues and pure retailing business. IndianOil aspires to be Asias leading commercial R&D organisation in the downstream hydrocarbon sector by building on its capabilities in developing innovative technologies, products and processes, and nodal research in alternative fuels.

Beyond core businesses, IndianOil is working to emerge as a major player in the petrochemicals business by the year 2011-12, with two petrochemical hubs shaping up at Panipat and Paradip. In natural gas business, it is attempting quantum growth in LNG imports, infrastructure and marketing, besides city gas distribution. In the highrisk business of oil exploration & production, IndianOils consortium approach with established players is paying off well in terms of exceptional Government support and successful forays in India and abroad. Its current interests are focussed on oil equity and sourcing of natural gas, predominantly from African and CIS countries, by leveraging its downstream capabilities to form joint venture partnerships with reputed enterprises overseas.

With Indias energy needs projected to grow by 40% in the nex t five years, the future is indeed full of promise for IndianOil; a future the 31,700 strong IndianOil team shall build as they fuel the dreams of over a billion of their countrymen.

IndianOil is the only oil company in India to market the widest possible range of fuels used by the aviation industry in India- JP-5, Avgas 100LL, Methanol Water Mixture, Jet A-1 and aviation lubricants, etc. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is dispensed from specially designed refuellers, which are driven up to parked airplanes and helicopters. Major airports have hydrant refueling systems that pump the fuel right up to the filling outlets on the tarmac through underground pipelines for faster refueling. Essentially, ATF is pumped into an aircraft by two methods: Overwing and Underwing. Overwing fuelling is used on smaller planes, helicopters, and piston-engine aircraft and is similar to automobile fuelling - one or more fuel ports are opened and fuel is pumped in with a conventional pump. Underwing fuelling, also called single-point is used on larger aircraft. To ensure that you receive the best service, every one of our 96 AFSs follows specific quality audits based on a

Quality Control Index System benchmarked to global standards. In addition, 15 Quality Certification Laboratories provide complete specification tests round-the-clock. Ensuring that these standards are always upheld, there is a back up of a highly skilled, qualified and dedicated team of officers and refueling crew. 1 LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG) LPG is a mixture of commercial butane and commercial propane having both saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. LPG marketed in India shall be governed by Indian Standard Code IS-4576 (Refer Table 1.0) and the test methods by IS-1448. 1.2 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND CHARACTERISTICS 1.2.1 DENSITY LPG at atmospheric pressure and temperature is a gas which is 1.5 to 2.0 times heavier than air. It is readily liquefied under moderate pressures. The density of the liquid is approximately half that of water and ranges from 0.525 to 0.580 @ 15 deg. C. Since LPG vapour is heavier than air, it would normally settle down at ground level/ low lying places, and accumulate in depressions. 1.2.2 VAPOUR PRESSURE The pressure inside a LPG storage vessel/ cylinder will be equal to the vapour pressure corresponding to the temperature of LPG in the storage vessel. The vapour pressure is dependent on temperature as well as on the ratio of mixture of hydrocarbons. At liquid full condition any further expansion of the liquid, the cylinder pressure will rise by approx. 14 to 15 kg./sq.cm. for each degree centigrade. This clearly explains the

hazardous situation that could arise due to overfilling of cylinders. 1.2.3 FLAMMABILITY LPG has an explosive range of 1.8% to 9.5% volume of gas in air. This is considerably narrower than other common gaseous fuels. This gives an indication of hazard of LPG vapour accumulated in low lying area in the eventuality of the leakage or spillage. The auto-ignition temperature of LPG is around 410-580 deg. C and hence it will not ignite on its own at normal temperature. Entrapped air in the vapour is hazardous in an unpurged vessel/ cylinder during pumping/ filling-in operation. In view of this it is not advisable to use air pressure to unload LPG cargoes or tankers. 1.2.4 COMBUSTION The combustion reaction of LPG increases the volume of products in addition to the generation of heat. LPG requires upto 50 times its own volume of air for complete combustion . Thus it is essential that adequate ventilation is provided when LPG is burnt in enclosed spaces otherwise asphyxiation due to depletion of oxygen apart from the formation of carbon-dioxide can occur. 1.2.5 ODOUR LPG has only a very faint smell, and consequently, it is necessary to add some odourant, so that any escaping gas can easily be detected. Ethyl Mercaptan is normally used as stenching agent for this purpose. The amount to be added should be sufficient to allow detection in atmosphere 1/5 of lower limit of flammability or odour level 2 as per IS : 4576. 1.2.6 COLOUR LPG is colourless both in liquid and vapour phase. During leakage the vapourisation of liquid cools the atmosphere and condenses the water vapour contained in them to form a whitish fog which may make it possible to see an escape of LPG. 1.2.7 TOXICITY LPG even though slightly toxic, is not poisonous in vapour phase, but can, however, suffocate when in large concentrations due to the fact that it displaces oxygen. In view of this the vapour posses mild anaesthetic properties.

Auto Gas

AutoGas (LPG) is a clean, high octane, abundant and eco-friendly fuel. It is obtained from natural gas through fractionation and from crude oil through refining. It is a mixture of petroleum gases like propane and butane. The higher energy content in this fuel results in a 10% reduction of CO2 emission as compared to MS. AutoGas is a gas at atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures, but it can be liquefied when moderate pressure is applied or when the temperature is sufficiently reduced. This property makes the fuel an ideal energy source for a wide range of applications, as it can be easily condensed, packaged, stored and utilised. When the pressure is released, the liquid makes up about 250 times its volume as gas, so large amounts of energy can be stored and transported compactly. The use of LPG as an automotive fuel has become legal in India with effect from April 24, 2000, albeit within the prescribed safety terms and conditions. Hitherto, the thousands of LPG vehicles running in various cities have been doing so illegally by using domestic LPG cylinders, a very unsafe practice. Using domestic LPG cylinders in automobiles is still illegal. The fuel is marketed by IndianOil under the brand name AutoGas

"IndianOil has setup 350 Auto LPG Dispensing Stations (ALDS) covering 192 cities across India." AutoGas impacts greenhouse emissions less than any other fossil fuel when measured through the total fuel cycle. Conversion of petrol to AutoGas helps substantially reduce air pollution caused by vehicular emissions. The saving on account of conversion to AutoGas in comparison to petrol is about 35-40%. Low filling times and the 35-40% saving is a reason enough for a consumer to convert his vehicle to AutoGas.

Natural Gas

Drawing on its vast experience and carefully nurtured skill sets, IndianOil has made successful forays in diverse areas such as Natural Gas, Petrochemicals, Exploration & Production, Renewable Energy, etc. Over the years, Natural Gas has emerged as the 'fuel of choice' across the world. It is steadily replacing traditional fossil fuels due to its environment friendly characteristics which help in meeting the stipulated automobile emission norms. Natural Gas has significant cost advantages over fuels such as Naphtha and commercial LPG. Demand for

Natural Gas in India is primarily driven by the fertiliser and power sectors, which account for almost two-third of the countrys gas consumption.

IndianOil has co-promoted Petronet LNG Limited (PLL) for setting up LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) terminals at Dahej & Kochi. IndianOil has marketing rights for 30% quantity of the LNG procured by PLL from RasGas on long term basis at Dahej besides long term contract at Kochi. Demand for Natural gas in India is growing and cannot be met by the current indigenous production. Hence, IndianOil is in the process of sourcing more quantities of LNG to meet the increasing requirements.

Within the gas business, City Gas Distribution (CGD) is a rapidly growing segment. Green Gas Ltd., IndianOil's joint venture with GAIL (India) Ltd., is already operational in Agra and Lucknow in the state of Uttar Pradesh and is further expanding to cater to the increased demand in various sectors. In an initiative to expand the CGD network, IndianOil has formed a consortium with M/s Adani Gas Ltd. to develop CGD networks on pan India basis. In Gas Transmission business, IndianOil owns and operates Dadri-Panipat Pipeline. IndianOil has formed a consortium with GSPL and other OMCs to build & operate Gas pipelines across the country. In a major step to increase IndianOils presence in Natural Gas industry, Corporation is currently implementing 5 MMTPA LNG import Terminal at Ennore near Chennai which is targeted for completion during 2015-16. IndianOil is in the process of procuring LNG from world market on long term as well as short term basis for meeting the Internal Consumption at our own Refineries and for Ennore LNG Terminal. IndianOil has the capabilities to supply re-gassified LNG to customers presently located in the Northern and Western regions of India. With the expansion of the pipeline network in Southern region as well as other parts of the country, IndianOil can supply gas to customers located near those pipelines. As a committed supplier, IndianOil is completely responsible for delivery of gas to the customers premises. The transportation services of the company engaged in transportation of gas are hired to ensure deliveries. This model is used world over wherein multiple gas suppliers operate through one transportation system. The LNG at Doorstep initiative involves making LNG available to the customers not connected by gas pipeline. Gas is transported through a cryogenic system, stored in a cryogenic holding tank at the target location and re-gassified on-site through vaporizers for use as fuel. The entire operation being concealed eliminates the possibility of adulteration and pilferage. Introduced in 2007, this initiative has been well received and is attracting more customers located away from the pipelines. IndianOil has in-house capabilities in the manufacturing of Cryogenic equipment at the State of Art facility at Nasik for the last three decades.

Automotive gasoline and gasoline-oxygenate blends are used in internal combustion spark-ignition engines. These spark ignition engine fuels are primarily used for passenger cars. They are also used in off-highway utility vans, farm machinery and in other spark ignition engines employed in a variety of service applications.

Gasoline is a complex mixture of relatively volatile hydrocarbons that vary widely in chemical & physical properties and are derived from fractional distillation of crude petroleum with a further treatment mainly in terms of improvement of its octane rating. The hundreds of individual hydrocarbons in gasoline range from c4 to c11. An oxygenate is an oxygen-containing, ashless organic compound (such as an alcohol or ether) which can be used as a fuel or fuel supplement. Motor gasoline is sold at retail outlets where it is directly delivered into the automobile tank. The Indian Standard governing the properties of motor gasoline & gasoline-oxygenate blends is IS 2796 : 2000 (3rd Rev).

In view of the auto fuel policy issued by Govt of India, more & more stringent specifications (equivalent to Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV) are being made applicable for the gasolines being marketed in India. This has led to reduction of environmentally polluting factors in gasolines. XTRAPREMIUM

Petroleum derived diesel (called as petrodiesel) is a mixture of straight run product (150 C and 350 C) with varying amount of selected cracked distillates and is composed of saturated hydrocarbons (primarily paraffins including n , iso , and cycloparaffins), and aromatic hydrocarbons (including napthalenes and alkylbenzenes).

Diesel is used in diesel engines, a type of internal combustion engine. Rudolf Diesel originally designed the diesel engine to use coal dust as a fuel, but oil proved more effective. Diesel engines are used in cars, motorcycles, boats and locomotives. Automotive diesel fuel serves to power trains, buses, trucks, and automobiles, to run construction, petroleum drilling and other off-road equipment and to be the prime mover in a wide range of power generation & pumping applications. The diesel engine is high compression, self-ignition engine. Fuel is ignited by the heat of high compression and no spark plug is used. The Indian Standard governing the properties of diesel fuels is IS 1460:2005 (5th Rev). Important characteristics are ignition characteristics, handling at low temperature, flash point.

Diesel fuel often contains higher quantities of sulphur. In India , emission standards (equivalent to Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV) have necessitated oil refineries to dramatically reduce the level of sulphur in diesel in view of the auto fuel policy brought in force by Govt of India. BIS has brought out specification for "Diesel with 5% Biodiesel" that may be marketed in near future. XTRAMILE

Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is dispensed from specially designed refuellers, which are driven up to parked airplanes and helicopters. Major airports have hydrant refuelling systems that pump the fuel right up to the filling outlets on the tarmac through underground pipelines for faster refuelling. To ensure that you receive the best service, every one of our 101 AFSs follows specific quality audits based on a Quality Control Index System benchmarked to global standards. Lubrication is the art of reducing friction between rubbing or rolling surfaces. In the recent past two terminologies have gained currency - Tribology, the science of Rubbing; Rheology, the study of stream or flow. The earliest knowledge of lubrication is evident from grease lubricated chariot wheels excavated from the ruins. The rapid development of this science can be said to have started from the 18th century, with significant technological progress in commercial usage in the 20th century. Most lubricants are liquids. Water is a natural lubricant but has extremely limited application due to its very low viscosity and very low boiling point, besides its contribution to rusting and corrosion. Vegetable oils have excellent lubrication properties but have very poor oxidation stability, high pour point, rapid thickening and may even let out foul odours in time. Most of the liquid lubricants used at present all over the world are petroleum-based mineral oils.

Kerosene

Kerosenes are distillate fractions of crude oil in the boiling range of 150-250C. They are treated mainly for reducing aromatic content to increase their smoke point (height of a smokeless flame) and hydrofining to reduce sulphur content and to improve odour, colour & burning qualities (char value). Kerosene is used as a domestic fuel for heating / lighting and also for manufacture of insecticides/herbicides/fungicides to control pest, weeds and fungi. Since kerosene is less volatile than gasoline, increase in its evaporation rate in domestic burners is achieved by increasing surface area of the oil to be burned and by increasing its temperature. The two types of burners which achieve this fall into two categories namely vaporisers & atomisers.

Petrochemicals

India is amongst the fastest growing petrochemicals markets in the world. Taking this into consideration and to enhance its downstream integration, IndianOil is focusing on increasing its presence in the domestic petrochemicals sector besides the overseas markets through systematic expansion of customer base and innovative supply logistics. Petrochemicals have been identified as a prime driver of future growth by IndianOil. The Corporation is envisaging an investment of Rs 30,000 crore in the petrochemicals business in the next few years. These projects will utilise product streams from the existing refineries of IndianOil, thereby achieving better exploitation of the hydrocarbon value chain. Beginning with a low-investment, high-value projects such as Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and Butene-1 at Gujarat Refinery, Vadodara, IndianOil has set up a world-scale Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant at Gujarat Refinery and an integrated Paraxylene/Purified Terephthalic Acid (PX/PTA) plant at Panipat. A Naphtha Cracker complex with downstream polymer units is also in operation at Panipat.

These initiatives are designed to catapult IndianOil among the top Southeast Asia in the long term.

In order to penetrate the petrochemicals market effectively, a separate Strategic Business Unit (SBU) has been created in IndianOil for marketing of petrochemicals. This SBU has five exclusive sub-groups, classified product wise (LAB, PTA, Polymers) and function wise (Logistics & Exports), in addition to regional/field set-ups to offer reliable customer service. This SBU has already established IndianOil's LAB business both in India and abroad. Today, IndianOil is a major supplier to the key players in the detergent industry, both national and international. Similarly, in PTA business, all major domestic customers are catered to by IndianOil. A robust logistics model has been the key to IndianOil's success story and facilities have been put in place for seamless product dispatches to customers by rail, road and sea. Mega Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant, Gujarat Plants: Refinery:

IndianOil made its big-ticket entry into petrochemicals with the commissioning of the countrys largest Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant at Gujarat Refinery in August 2004. It is also the largest grassroots single train Kerosene-toLAB unit in the world, with an installed capacity of 1,20,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA). Currently, two grades of LAB high molecular weight and low molecular weight are being produced for manufacture of environment friendly biodegradable detergents. The quality of the LAB produced here has found wide acceptance in the domestic and overseas markets.

Built at a cost of Rs. 1,248 crore and commissioned in a record 24 months time, the plant produces superior quality LAB for manufacturing environment-friendly biodegradable detergents. The key raw materials for the plant, catering to domestic as well as export market requirements meeting the latest and most stringent quality standards, are Kerosene and Benzene produced at Koyali Refinery. The LAB unit at Gujarat Refinery achieved 102.8% capacity utilization during the year 2009-2010. LAB sales touched 126 TMT including export of 19 TMT to 19 countries during the year 2009-10. Paraxylene/Purified Terephthalic Acid (PX/PTA), Panipat:

The most technologically advanced plant in the country, the PX/PTA plant marks IndianOils major step towards forward integration in the hydrocarbon value chain by manufacturing Paraxylene (PX) from captive Naphtha and thereafter, converting it into Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA). The integrated Paraxylene/Purified Terephthallic Acid (PX/PTA) complex was built at a cost of Rs. 5,104 crore within the Panipat Refinery in Haryana. The PTA Plant is the single largest unit in India with a world-scale capacity of 5,53,000 MTPA, achieving economy of scale. The process package for the PTA plant was prepared by erstwhile M/s Dupont, UK (now M/s. Invista) and that of the Paraxylene Unit was prepared by M/s UOP, USA. M/s EIL and M/s Toyo Engineering were the Project Management Consultants (PMC) for executing the PTA and PX respectively. The Paraxylene plant is designed to process 5,00,000 MTPA of heart-cut Naphtha to produce about 3,60,000 MTPA of PX. Naphtha is sourced from IndianOils Panipat and Mathura refineries, for which Naphtha splitter units are set u p at the respective refineries. The cracker will produce over 800,000 tonnes per annum of ethylene, 600,000 tonnes per annum of Propylene, 125,000 tonnes per annum of Benzene, and other products viz., LPG, Pyrolysis Fuel Oil, components of Gasoline and Diesel. The Polypropylene (PP) unit is designed to produce high quality and high value niche grades including high speed Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) (used for food packaging and laminations), high clarity random co-polymers (used for food containers and thin walled products) and super impact co-polymer grades (used for batteries, automobile parts, luggage and heavy duty transport containers). Polyethylene is used for making injection moulded caps, heavy duty crates, containers, bins, textile bobbins, luggage ware, thermoware, storage bins, pressure pipes (for gas and water), small blow-moulded bottles, jerry cans, etc.

Other than the regular petroleum products like light distillates, middle distillates, heavier products like Furnace Oil, Bitumen, etc., IndianOil refineries also manufacture petroleum products for specific applications. These specific applications could be feed stock for chemical industry, raw material for specific industries and solid fuels. The petroleum products, produced for specific applications are called, 'Petrochemicals and Specialties (P&S) Products'. Every petroleum refinery is not designed to produce P&S products but IndianOil's refineries have been planned to make a large portfolio of P&S products. The indicative list of products from IndianOil's various refineries is as follows:

Crude oil

Share on emailEmail Print Crude oil - as petroleum directly out of the ground is called - is a remarkably varied substance, both in its use and composition. Crude oil is formed from the preserved remains of prehistoric zooplankton and algae, which have been settled to the sea (or lake) bottom in large quantities under anoxic conditions. It was formed over millions of years from the remains of tiny aquatic plants and animals that lived in ancient seas due to compression and heating of ancient organic materials over geological time. The oldest oil-bearing rocks date back to more than 600 million years, the youngest being as old as about 1 million years. Although various types of hydrocarbons - molecules made of hydrogen and carbon atoms - form the basis of all crude oils, they differ in their configurations. The chemical structure of petroleum is composed of hydrocarbon chains of different lengths. Because of this, petroleum may be taken to oil refineries and the hydrocarbon chemicals separated by distillation and treated by other chemical processes, to be used for a variety of purposes. It can be a straw-colored liquid or tar-black solid. Red, green and brown hues are not uncommon. Crude oil is classified by the location of its origin (e.g. West Texas Intermediate, WT, Brent, Dubai or Minas) and often by its relative weight or viscosity (light, intermediate or heavy); refiners may also refer to it as `sweet, which means it contains relatively little sulphur, or as `sour, which means it contains substantial amounts of sulphur and requires more refining in order to meet current product specifications. The number of carbon atoms determines the oil's relative `weight or density. Gases generally have one to four carbon atoms, while heavy oils and waxes may have 50, and asphalts, hundreds. Crude oil from an area in which the crude oil's molecular characteristics have been determined and the oil has been classified are used as pricing references throughout the world. These references are known as Crude oil benchmarks After considering availability of indigenous crude oil, balance crude oil is required to be imported. IndianOil sources its crude oil requirement from Far East, Gulf region, Mediterranean, West Africa and Latin American sources.
