SECTION 202 Pavement construction permitted options Horizontal alignments, surface levels and surface regularity of pavement courses 202.001

ROAD PAVEMENTS Road pavements shall be constructed from one of the permitted options described in Appendix 202/1.

202.002

Horizontal alignments, surface levels and surface regularity of pavement courses shall be in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works, clause 702, with the following amendments: Delete Appendix 1/12 and substitute setting out information as shown on the Contract Drawings. Delete Appendix 7/1 and substitute Appendix 202/1. The vertical profile, crossfall and pavement course thicknesses shown on the Contract Drawings shall be used to determine the design levels of pavement courses. The grid for checking surface levels of pavement courses shall be as shown on the Contract Drawings. The permitted surface irregularities shall be in accordance with Category B Roads as defined in the Specification for Highway Works, table 7/2.

General requirements for sub-base and base

202.003

Sub-bases and bases shall be in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works, clauses 801 and 810, with the following amendment: Delete Appendix 7/1 and substitute Appendix 202/1.

Excavation, trimming and reinstatement of existing surfaces

202.004

Existing surfaces shall be excavated, trimmed and reinstated in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works, clause 706, with the following amendments: Delete Appendix 7/2 and substitute the Contract Drawings. Delete Appendix 2/3 and substitute the Contract Drawings. Backfilling of excavations shall be in accordance with Section 51: Excavations.

Breaking up or perforation of redundant pavement

202.005

Redundant pavements shall be broken up or perforated in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works clause 707, with the following amendment: Delete Appendix 7/6 and substitute the Contract Drawings.

Weather conditions for laying of bituminous materials Unbound materials

202.006

Bituminous mixtures shall be laid only when the weather conditions are in accordance with clause 945 of the Specification for Highway Works except where modified by Appendix 202/1.

202.007

Unbound sub-base materials shall be in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works, clauses 800 to 807, with the following amendments: Delete Appendix 7/1 and substitute Appendix 202/1. Delete Appendix 1/5 and substitute the Contract Drawings. Unbound sub-base materials shall be laid in the locations and to the thicknesses given in Appendix 202/1.

Bituminous bound materials

202.008

Bituminous bound materials shall be in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works, Series 900, with the following amendments: Delete Appendix 7/1 and substitute Appendix 202/1. Delete Appendix 1/5 and substitute the Contract Drawings. Bituminous pavement courses design base materials shall be laid in the locations and to the thicknesses stated in Appendix 202/N.

Concrete and cement bound materials

202.009

Concrete and cement bound materials shall be in accordance with the Specification for Highway Works, Series 1000 and clauses 810 to 880, with the following amendments: Concrete and cement bound materials pavement courses design base materials shall be laid in the locations and to the thicknesses given in Appendix 202/N. Delete Appendix 7/1 and substitute Appendix 202/N. Delete Appendix 1/5 and substitute the Contract Drawings.

Unless otherwise directed by the Employers Representative, the requirements for trial lengths as described in Specification for Highway Works clauses 1028 and 1030 and 810 shall not apply. The proposed construction method for concrete pavement shall be submitted for agreement prior to the commencement of work. Mastic asphalt 202.010 Mastic asphalt pavements shall be paving grade mastic asphalt manufactured, laid and finished in accordance with BS 1447. The concrete sub-surface for mastic asphalt pavement surfacing shall receive a U2 finish, in accordance with Section 80: Structural Concrete. An asphalt grade glass fibre tissue isolating membrane of 50 g/m to 70 g/m in weight shall be placed on the sub-surface prior to laying the mastic asphalt. The concrete sub-surface for mastic asphalt for sloping pavements shall receive a U1 finish, in accordance with Section 80: Structural Concrete, with the direction of tamping at right angles to the line of the slope. A high-bond rubber emulsion primer shall be applied to the concrete surface prior to asphalting. Where mastic asphalt pavements are to incorporate waterproofing to the substructure beneath, a two-coat underlay of roofing grade mastic asphalt manufactured in accordance with BS 6925 and laid in accordance with BS 8218 shall be included. The underlay shall include a glass fibre isolating membrane of asphalt grade between 50 g/m and 70 g/m in weight.
