ABSTRACT An experiment is performed to find the inductance of the solenoids. We investigate what are the inductances based on the different characteristics of the induction coils (number of turns, radius and length).

Physics Laboratory Experiment Inductance of Solenoids 01. Objective Determine the inductance of various solenoids. 02. Principle & Task A square wave voltage of low frequency is applied to oscillatory circuits comprising coils and capacitors to produce free, damped oscillations. The values of inductance are calculated from the natural frequencies measured, the capacitance being known. 03. Equipments Induction coils, 1 set consisting of: o Induction coil, 300 turns, diameter 40 mm (Quantity = 1) o Induction coil, 300 turns, diameter 32 mm (Quantity = 1) o Induction coil, 300 turns, diameter 25 mm (Quantity = 1) o Induction coil, 200 turns, diameter 40 mm (Quantity = 1) o Induction coil, 100 turns, diameter 40 mm (Quantity = 1) o Induction coil, 150 turns, diameter 25 mm (Quantity = 1) o Induction coil, 175 turns, diameter 25 mm (Quantity = 1) Coil, 1200 turns Oscilloscope, 20 Mhz, 2 channels Function generator PEK capacitor/case 1/1nF/500 V PEK capacitor/case 1/470 pF/500 V Vernier caliper Measuring tape, 1 = 2 m Adapter, BNC-plug/socket 4 mm Connection box Connecting cord, 250 mm (Quantity = 4) Connecting cord, 500 mm (Quantity = 2)

04. Problems The problem is to connect coils of different dimensions (length, radius, number of turns) with a known capacitance C to form an oscillatory circuit. From the measurements of the natural frequencies, we are required to calculate the inductances of the coils and determine the relationship between: a) Inductance and number of turns b) Inductance and length c) Inductance and radius

Set-up & Procedure

Basically, we set up the experiment as shown in both figures below. Picture of the oscillatory circuit.

Theory & Evaluation

A current of strength I is flowed through a solenoid of different dimensions (length, cross sectional area, ; number of turns, N) until a magnetic field is present in the coil. When r, the magnetic field is uniform and the magnetic field is: B = onI = The magnetic flux through the coil is given by, = BA = onIA = (2) (1)

When this flux changes, it induces a voltage between the ends of the coil, Back E.M.F., E = - L Integrating, (From Faradays law of electromagnetic induction) -L =(3)

LI = L= = = (4)

*Note : Equation (4) applies for very long coils only, i.e.
