Atwoods machine marking scheme

Please do not share with students!

In this lab report, we introduced two items. First, the number of significant figures to use in their result section. Second, how to plot a graph and extract data out of it. For graphs, we will be forgiving, its the first time they do it. Save your red ink for the rigid pendulum experiment. Lab reports will be marked out of 100%, you subtract marks when something is wrong. I dont know what is going to be the average, but it should be lower than the previous one. Discussion will be marked externally and subtracted from the mark youve given them. You should write a quick note regarding this in the lab report. Marks should be entered on the paper copy of the excel sheet before the class begins so that you are ready to answer questions as soon as the experiment begins.

Sections
Purpose or theory missing Purpose or theory copied from the book Apparatus Observations -2% max for each. The theory should have at least the 1/t2 = equation used for the graph. -2% max. -5% max. They need schematics of the scale, caliper, and the Atwood machine. Rough sketches are alright.

-Table with 3 measurements of: (up to -10% if measurements missing) -M (mass of everything = 520g) -m1 (mass of the iron core weight = 255g) -10 x m0 (mass of 10 washers = 10g for 10). -the travelling distance (roughly 1 to 1.5m) if its less than 1m, they probably forgot to add 1 meter to their measurement (-2 marks). -the diameter of their wheel (12.6 cm typ.) Make sure they have all the right units (-2% max) They also need to get their error right. For each of the item above, the reading error is: (up to -5% if all of them are missing) - 0.05g for most masses - 0.005g for mass of one washer - 0.025mm or 0.05mm for the vernier caliper - 0.5mm for the travelling distance

Time measurement, 5 measurements per configuration (up to -10% if something is terribly wrong). Times will differ depending on the distance travelled. Typically it goes from 3 to 15 seconds (not ms). The m values should be around 3,5,7,9 and 11g, and might differ by 1g. The reading error on the clock is not very important for now. In theory, it should still be the smallest division (0.0005s) but, 0.001s, or even 0.002s can be accepted. If no reading error is quoted -2%. -Each measurement should have the standard deviation ( ) calculated = (-2% each, max of 5%) -The right type of error should be used < 2 . . (pick the larger one, then use R.E. or . Details on p. 14 of the manual) (-5% once)

Graphs

Need a graph of 1/t2 vs. m. (-10% max). -

Title & Caption (-3%) Axes title and units (-2% each axis)

Calculations

The slope should be calculated, rise/run and should give something like 0.005 g-1s-2 although it varies with the travelling distance. They should obtain something around 9.8m/s2. Ive done the experiment myself and found that 0.5m/s2 is expected. If they found exactly 9.8m/s2, its a little bit suspicious, but possible (-5% max)

A fitted line (-2%) Error bars (-2%) (If too small, they should note it somewhere on the graph). The y axis error bars might be too small to see. The x axis ones should be equal. If they got their reading error as the dominant source of error, then they should have = 0.11 (likely visible on their graph), if they used mean, it should be larger. - Slope min and max (-2%) Thats where student might have a lot of problems, dont be too harsh. They need a sample calculation for each (-2% of each missing). 2 2 2 - = + 41 + 200 1/ 2 =
2 3

Scale and neatness (at least a page) (-4% max)

There are two ways to calculate the error on the slope (m). (-5% max) Only one is required: The easiest one is: The second one is: = = 2 2 + 23

They need the frictional torque from the intercept at the origin (b). The intercept can be found by reading the graph for this time only. Next time they will need to use: =

I obtained very different values for b myself. I wouldnt remove too many marks for it. Just make sure units are dealt with correctly. (intercept in s-2, h in meters, r in meters and A in kg gives in Nm (newton meter). (-2% if not dealt with correctly). Make sure they use the radius of the pulley, not the diameter (6cm, not 12cm). (-2%) The should have a sign opposite to the intercept, but the lab manual doesnt really show it. So dont remove marks for it. Results Discussion My questions Do not mark it. Do not mark it 2% each 1) They should perform the consistency test, with 1 comment about anything they want. 2) 1000 140 mm2. They dont need to show how they obtained it nor comply to sig fig rules. Just the result is good enough.

Other
Cleanliness Loose sheet of paper No original data (I forgot to sign some of Marielles students data). Rarely -5% max, typically -0% Warning -10%

Typical Measurements (reading error only, may differ if mean is used)

Results may vary a little bit (measured myself)
This is not a very good experiment, the uncertainty (error) is very small, but there a systematic uncertainty that is not taken into account and can give an error up to ~10%. Travelling distance Radius of the pulley Mass of everything (M) Mass of 1 washer (m0) Mass of m1 ms Times ~1 to 1.6 meters ~6 6.5 cm 518 to 520g (0.05g) 0.98 to 1.02g (0.005g) 252 to 257g Typ. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11g 3.5 to 15 s
