Asians Fastest-Growing Race or Ethnic Group in 2012, Census

The U.S. Census Bureau announced Asians were the nation's fastest-growing race or ethnic group in 2012. Their population rose by 530,000, or 2.9 percent, in the preceding year, to 18.9 million, according to Census Bureau annual population estimates. More than 60 percent of this growth in the Asian population came from international migration. By comparison, the Hispanic population grew by 2.2 percent, or more than 1.1 million, to just over 53 million in 2012. The Hispanic population growth was fueled primarily by natural increase (births minus deaths), which accounted for 76 percent of Hispanic population change. Hispanics remain our nation's second largest race or ethnic group (behind nonHispanic whites), representing about 17 percent of the total population. These statistics are part of a set of annual population estimates released today by race, Hispanic origin, age and sex. They examine population change for these groups nationally, as well as within all states and counties, between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012. Also released were population estimates for Puerto Rico and its municipios by age and sex. "Asians and Hispanics have long been among our nation's fastest-growing race or ethnic groups," noted Thomas Mesenbourg, the Census Bureau's acting director.

Shakespeare in the Park Presents 'Ring Round The Moon'

Oklahoma City Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park continues their 29th season as Oklahoma's Outdoor Theatrical Summer Tradition at the beautiful Myriad Botanical Garden's Waterstage with the 2013 Summer Season's second main stage show Ring Round The Moon. All productions rated PG. "A play of many moods wistfully romantic, satirical...fantastic" --NY Times Based on Jean Anouilh's Invitation to the Castle, Ring Round the Moon tells the tale of two twins, a cold, manipulative playboy Hugo, and his brother Frederic, a love-struck and timid man. Frederic is engaged to Diana, the spoiled daughter of a millionaire, but Diana loves Hugo. Hugo hatches a plot to bring in Isabelle, a lower class dancer, and give her the My Fair Lady makeover in order to make Frederic fall in love with her. And then there is Lady India who is the mistress of the millionaire but who loves his lowly secretary. And the gala ball to be held that night, and thus set all the mischief in motion, is nothing more than a masquerade. The only difference is at this masquerade, everyone hides behind their own skin while trying to deceive those around them. Tickets are $15, and $10 for Students, Seniors and Military. All Seats are General Admission. Individual and Season Flex-Pass tickets may be purchased by going to www.oklahomashakespeare.com or calling the Oklahoma Shakespeare Box Office 405-403-1750.

AT&T Assists Victims Of Okla. Tornado

AT&T is taking several steps to assist those in need in Moore and the Oklahoma City area after the community was struck by a tornado Monday. As part of the support, AT&T is making a $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross to assist its relief and recovery efforts. We will also be staying in close touch with the Red Cross and local authorities as they continue to assess community needs during this emergency. Other initiatives include: AT&T customers who want to support the Red Cross' efforts can text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10. The donation will be charged on their monthly AT&T bill. AT&T is organizing employees to help victims of this devastating tornado through disaster relief drives and volunteer opportunities as critical needs are identified. AT&T is waiving voice, data and text overage charges through June 30 for customers in the affected areas. AT&T is continuing our onthe-ground coordination with authorities and emergency response teams as we deploy additional crews and resources, including Cells on Wheels (COWs) and Satellite Cells on Light Trucks (COLTs), to add network capacity in the impacted areas. Despite sustaining limited damage, the vast majority of our cell sites in the area are operating, and we're finalizing work on a few cell sites. Given heavier-than-usual call volumes, we ask customers to consider text messaging for communications with family, friends and loved ones.

Thunder Player Donates to the City Fire Department

On Friday, June 14, 2013, Oklahoma City Thunder Reserve Center and former Bishop McGuiness High School basketball star, Daniel Orton, gave a generous donation to the Oklahoma City Fire Department's Project Life program. This program was designed and implemented by the Oklahoma City Fire Department to provide smoke alarms and other life-saving tools to those citizens in our community who cannot afford them. Smoke alarms can provide early warning in the event of a fire. This warning can give valuable time for occupants to escape from a burning structure. All homes should have at least one working smoke alarm installed outside the sleeping areas of residential structures. Multiple story homes should have a smoke alarm on each level of the house. Smoke alarms must be tested monthly and batteries should be changed annually. Additionally, residents need to have an escape plan and practice that plan. If you need a smoke alarm, go by your nearest Oklahoma City Fire Station to obtain an alarm. If you need assistance with installing a smoke alarm, call the Fire Marshall's Office at 2973318.
