Calculate the rate of heat loss per square meter when the temperature difference between the inner and outer surface is 650C. (OR) b. A hollow sphere has an inside surface temperature of 300C and an outside surface temperature of 30C. If K = 18 W/mK, calculate (1) The heat loss by conduction for an inside diameter of 5 cm and an outside diameter of 15 cm. (2) The heat loss by conduction if equation for a plane wall of area equal to the mean of the inside and outside surfaces is assumed to apply to the sphere.

12. a. i. Write a note on unsteady state conduction. (6 Marks) ii. One pipe 40 cm diameter carrying steam at 120C and another pipe 20 cm diameter carrying the water at 10C are taken under ground. They run parallel to each other for 50 m length with the centre distance between them 80 cm. Assuming the ground is infinite medium and neglecting the resistance of the pipe materials. Find the heat transfer rate between the two pipes per hour K (for soil) = 0.24 W/mC. (10 Marks) (OR) b. An iron plate (k = 60 W/m K, c = 0.46 kj/kg K, p = 7850 kg/m3 and a = 1.6 x 10-5 m2/s) of 50 mm thickness is initially at 225C. Suddenly, both surfaces are exposed to an ambient temperature of 25C with a heat transfer coefficient of 500 W/m2 K. Calculate (a) the centre temperature at 2 min after the start of cooling (b) the temperature at a depth 1 cm from the surface at 2 min after the start of cooling and (c) the energy removed from The plate per sq.m. during this time. 13. a. A chemical having specific heat of 3.3 kj/kgK flowing at the rate of 20,000 kg/h enters a parallel flow heat exchanger at 120C. The flow rate of cooling water is 50,000 kg/h with an inlet temperature of 20C. The heat transfer area is 10 m2 and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 1050 W/m2K. Find (i) the effectiveness of the heat exchanger, (ii) the outlet temperatures of water and chemical. Take for water cp = 4.186 kj/kgK. (OR) b. i. Write short note on significance of non dimensional numbers in convection. (6 Marks) ii. Air at 25C at the atmospheric pressure is flowing over a flat plate at 3 m/sec. If the plate is 1 m wide and the temperature tw = 75C. Calculate the following at a location of 1 cm from leading edge.
