AVE NACIONAL DE GUATEMALA, EL QUETZAL Durante el gobierno de Miguel Garca Granados, en 1871 se declar al Quetzal como ave nacional.

Es el smbolo de libertad, un ave que no puede vivir en cautiverio. El quetzal, es reconocido como ave nacional de Guatemala simbolizando la libertad, autonoma e independencia. Esta ave da nombre a la moneda nacional, es la mxima condecoracin nacional (Orden del Quetzal) y Quetzaltenango (segunda ciudad del pas) significa "Lugar de Quetzales". Se utiliz por primera vez como smbolo patrio cuando se le coloc como parte del Escudo de Armas (1871), sin embargo ha sido parte de la historia y la cultura de los pueblos que habitaron esta regin desde poca prehispnica. Era conocido como Pjaro Serpiente en los libros sagrados de los mayas. Su nombre popular (Quetzal), tiene su origen en la lengua nhuatl. Entre los nombres vernculos se puede mencionar que en maya, se le denomina "Kuk" y los quichs le llaman "guc" o "gug". En Qeckchi su nombre es Goog . La palabra "quetzalcoatl" es azteca y "quetzall" tolteca y nahoa. Cientficamente se le denomina Pharomacrus Mocinno. Este ltimo nombre le fue dado en honor al naturalista Jos Mara Mocio, quien realiz varias exploraciones en Guatemala a finales del siglo XVIII y llevo los primeros especmenes de esta ave a Europa. A esta hermosa ave se le conoce con varios nombres. Algunos son : Trogon Resplendes, Trogon Paradiseus, Pharomacrus Mocinno de la Llave, Pharomacrus Costarricense y Trogon Pavonius. El quetzal pertenece a la familia de los trogones y en opinin de los expertos, es el ms bello ejemplar de este grupo de aves. Se caracteriza por el especial color de su plumaje, el cual parece variar de tonalidades y brillo debido a los cambios de luz. Segn algunos ornitlogos, esto se debe a la presencia de melanina en sus plumas y tambin a que las mismas reflejan la luz.

It was first used as a national symbol when placed as part of the Coat of Arms (1871), however, has been part of the history and culture of the peoples who inhabited this region since pre-Hispanic times. He was known as "Snake Bird" in the sacred books of the Maya. Its popular name (Quetzal), comes from the Nahuatl language. Among the common names can be mentioned that in Maya, is called "Kuk" and Quiches call "guc" or "Gugu". In Q'eckchi his name is "G'oog '. The word "Quetzalcoatl" is Aztec "Quetzalli" Toltec and Nahuatl. Scientifically is called Pharomacrus mocinno. This last name was given in honor of Jos Mara Mocio naturalist, who made several explorations in Guatemala in the late eighteenth century and took the first specimens of this bird in Europe. This beautiful bird is known by several names. Some are: Resplendes Trogon, Trogon paradiseus, Pharomacrus mocinno of the Key, Costarricense Pharomacrus and Pavonius Trogon. The quetzal belongs to the family of trogons and expert opinion, is the most beautiful example of this group of birds. It is characterized by the special color of its plumage, which seems to vary from shades and brightness due to light changes. According to some ornithologists, this is due to the presence of melanin in the feathers and also that they reflect light.
