PRESENTACIN | PRESENTATION La construccin con elementos vegetales est presente tanto en la arquitectura verncula de diversas partes del mundo, como en las propuestas ms recientes que tratan de sacar partido a estos materiales por sus propiedades climticas y por su baja huella ecolgica. En el mbito de la arquitectura verncula, la construccin vegetal tiene una amplia trayectoria desde los mudhif de Iraq o el refuerzo con paja de estructuras de tapial, hasta el empleo de cubiertas vegetales en los teitos asturianos o las stugas suecas. Ahora, estas tcnicas estn recuperndose y ponindose al da para sacar partido de sus cualidades trmicas, su facilidad de ejecucin y su bajo impacto ambiental. En este sentido, materiales como el bamb o la caa han sido empleados en proyectos como el pabelln de Espaa en la Expo de Shangai (EMBT, Barcelona) o en las viviendas de Carabanchel (Foreign Office Architects, Londres) y la paja prensada por procedimientos diversos est siendo aplicada a proyectos domsticos experimentales como las viviendas unifamiliares de Wiggleswoth y Till en Londres o de Felix Jerusalem en Eschenz (Suiza). La facilidad para acceder a los materiales y las tcnicas mencionadas y la versatilidad de sus resultados ha hecho que incluso se haya planteado su uso para la vivienda social en mbitos donde tecnologas y materiales ms sofisticados no estn disponibles. En este sentido, cabe destacar las experiencias del Instituto Nacional de Investigacin y Normalizacin de la Vivienda de Per, que ha desarrollado el sistema constructivo de Quincha Prefabricada o la de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de ingeniera de Lima (Per) que ha desarrollado el sistema Domocaa aplicado a la construccin de viviendas de bajo coste resistentes al sismo. Asimismo, el arquitecto vietnamita Vo Trong Nghia ha desarrollado un prototipo modular de bamb para los sectores ms desfavorecidos del delta del Mekong, que subraya la dimensin social de estas tcnicas alternativas. Ante esta dispersin de experiencias y tcnicas, resulta pertinente llevar a cabo un estudio sistemtico de esta estrategia material para establecer genealogas y afinidades entre distintas prcticas y analizar sus posibilidades tcnicas y sus consecuencias sociales, urbanas y arquitectnicas. Desde el grupo e investigacin Arquitecturas Ocasionales [AAOO*], de la universidad Francisco de Vitoria, se invita a arquitectos, paisajistas, historiadores, ingenieros y profesionales de disciplinas afines a presentar propuestas de comunicaciones que tengan por objeto el tema del congreso, que se organizar temticamente en dos secciones: a. Tradiciones vernculas b. Tcnicas contemporneas Propuestas de comunicacin: Se ruega enviar un resumen de 300 palabras y un currculum breve a la secretara del congreso congresoarquitecturavegetal@gmail.com antes del 10 de julio de 2013. Plants have been widely used as building materials both within different vernacular traditions around the world and as part of more recent proposals that attempt to take advantage of their insulating properties an their low ecological footprint. Within vernacular architecture, the use of plants as building components can be traced from the mudhifs in Irak or the hay reinforcement of rammed earth walls, up to the green roofs of Asturian teitos or Swedish stugas. Now, these vernacular techniques are being rediscoverd and becoming updated in architectural designs that seek to profit from their thermal qualities, their availability and their low enviromental impact. Bamboo and reed have been used in recent projects such as the Spanish Pavillion in Shangai (EMBT, Barcelona) or at the Social Housing in Carabanchel (Foreign Office Architects), London), while pressed straw has been used in experimental proposals, such as the single family houses by Wiggleswoth & Till in London or by Felix Jerusalem in Eschenz (Switzerland). The availability of these materials and tecniques has enabled their use in social housing projects where more sofisticated technologies are not possible. Such is the case of the Quincha Prefabricada building system, developed by the Instituto Nacional de Investigacin y Normalizacin de la Vivienda in Per, or the Domocaa system put forward by the Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de ingeniera de Lima (Peru. Further, Vietnamese architecht Vo Trong Nghia has designed a modular prototype in bamboo for the poor at the Mekong delta, underlining the social dimension of these techniques. A thorough sutdy of the topic is yet to be done, in order to establish affinities between the different practices and to help analyze its technical, social and architectural potential. In order to explore the interplay of aesthetics and materiality in plant building, we seek submissions from architects, landscape architects, building historians, engineers, etc. interested in the conference topic. The conference will be organized around two themes: a.
