The p r o b l e m of the s t r e s s concentration in a s p h e r i c a l shell with an elliptic hole under uniform int e r n a l p r e s s u r e was solved in [2] in the f o r m u l a t i o n p r o p o s e d by Savin [1]. The hole is c o n v e r e d by a f r e e l y s u p p o r t e d cap. In this p a p e r , we compute v a r i a n t s of the p r o b l e m with the following p a r a m e t e r s using a slight i m p r o v e m e n t in the a l g o r i t h m for the solution: R a _ _ b= 1,1; 1,5; 2; 2, 5; 3; ~ = 1 0 ; 20; 50; 100; 150; 200; 250; 500; 1 1 ; 4 5"

H e r e a and b a r e the m a j o r and m i n o r s e m i - a x e s of the e l l i p s e , R is the radius of the shell, h its thickness. A table was obtained for the concentration coefficients (at the end of the m a j o r s e m i - a x i s of the ellipse) k0max. F r o m this table, we c o n s t r u c t e d for k0max (a/b; ~ a / R ) an a p p r o x i m a t i n g polynomial; the f o r m of the a r g u m e n t s was chosen f r o m n u m e r i c a l e x p e r i m e n t s . To d e t e r m i n e the polynomial we u s e d a p r o g r a m with the following a l g o r i t h m . 1. The initial polynomial was of d e g r e e not g r e a t e r than two in t h r e e a r g u m e n t s (27 t e r m s in all).

2. We c o n s i d e r only the points at which k0max - 20. 3. The values of the polynomial coefficients a r e found by a subroutine which solves a s y s t e m of n equation in m unknowns (n is the n u m b e r of points in the approximation, m is the n u m b e r of polynomial coefficients, n > m) and u s e s the idea d e s c r i b e d in [3] of combining the methods of C h e b y s h e v approximation and l i n e a r p r o g r a m m i n g . 4. The m a x i m u m weight of each t e r m in the polynomial thus found was d e t e r m i n e d o v e r the whole table of values of the a r g u m e n t s . Then the t e r m with the l e a s t weight was omitted and the operations d e s c r i b e d in point 3 w e r e r e p e a t e d .
