Do No Harm This essay is coming from three very valid points of view, as someone entering medical school to someone

who has already has profession in the medical field. We think it would be better to read as 3 separate parts to further understand what we are trying to say. The first part would be coming from Jim Cunanan as someone entering medical school. If I were to be asked by different people on the real reason why I wanted to become a doctor, I would give a different answer every time, depending on whos asking. I would have answered things like, I was inspired by Greys Anatomy, It has always been my lifelong dream, I have always been fascinated with what doctors do, Medicine is the noblest of all professions, or even, I think I look good in wearing a white coat. On a personal note, I still am unsure of the definite reason why Im doing this, when in fact I can be in a business with my family if I wanted to. But one thing is for sure: I could not imagine myself doing something else other than treating the sick and being anywhere else other than the hospital. The idea of not being a doctor scares me to the core. We all have our reasons on becoming a doctor, may it be sensible or even twisted. But at

the end of the day, what is important is that we practice our profession with sincerity and integrity. The creed First, do no harm must be implanted in every doctors heart and should be the guiding principle every time we handle a patient. Our lives work should always be in accordance to the patients best interests. My doubts are starting to build up; Im starting to think that sooner or later I am going to break. What helps me overcome these doubts is looking at the bigger picture: that all these hardships will all be worth it once I get my MD, that all my sacrifices will soon pay off, that I would be of great service to the society, and that I have proven that Im no quitter. If I stick to my goals, if I find balance between work and play, if I uphold my beliefs and integrity in everything I do, and if I overcome my weaknesses in a rightful manner, then I am on my way to making a difference in the lives of people I am soon to touch by practicing my dream profession. The next portion would be from Ken Bautista as someone who has experiencing work in a medical field. I can actually relate this essay to my real job as a nurse. In my opinion, as having have worked already, most healthcare professionals I know are selfless thats why it is so hard to think about ourselves. Never mind if youre tired, sleep-deprived, havent had a decent meal for the

whole time of your duty, havent even had a moments rest or at least minutes of peace and quiet, we are expected to rise to the challenge that our profession entails us. The ability to still be able to function properly and promptly with sensitivity and concern coupled with the stress you have to deal with is a very hard task to do if youre running on low in your overall health meter. Taking care of ourselves cannot be stressed too much. I have learned the hard way in this lesson, having been sometimes sickly in some of my duties before. In the hospital that I have worked for, we were

understaffed and overworked, sometimes up to the point that we were already getting sick because of stress. function well if you yourself cant even do that? How can you help others if you cant help yourself? During those moments of agony, you may find yourself sometimes asking questions like Why am I here? or What am I doing here?. It turns youre world upside down and makes you think about the reasons why you entered this field. Even so, I knew that I wanted to be there at that time, in that moment. It was my choice. It was what I wanted. It helps to know that what I was doing was for the well-being and recovery of the patient, to know that I am able to help someone go live his or her life to the fullest again. It is a heartwarming feeling to know that a patient recovered and

you were able to help in that process especially when you know the difficulties they had overcome during their stay in the hospital. My name is Lee sinby, and the saying do no harm means to speak and react to people in such a way that you cause them no emotional or physical harm. It requires a conscious effort, a thought process to be used before you react to any given situation. Even more than do not go out of your way to hurt another, it means think about what you say and do before you do it. We also think Do No Harm suggests becoming active in

addressing people's needs with an awe and reverence regardless of who it is, and that we should endeavor to react appropriately in all circumstances like Dr. Angeles, who in his life left wonderful legacy. This three words also reminds us to remember our limitations, relax our biases, recognize our boundaries, and know our strengths and weaknesses because we doctors are also humans who are immune on having diseases, that means we should take care ourselves first so that we could provide quality care to our patients. Do no harm, three small words with the ability to remind us that everything we do, does matter very much.

In summation, even coming from different experiences, we have similarities in grasping what the phrase First, do no harm means. First is that in building our own resilience, we are able to serve others even more with competency, concern and sensitivity that they need and deserve. Secondly, that it helps to have a set of values, beliefs and/or principles that mold you into who you want to be in the future. Lastly, that having a goal or dream keeps you focused and gives you the drive to surpass any obstacle that might come in your way.
