PENGALAMAN BERASASKAN SEKOLAH (PBS) PISMP AMBILAN JANUARI 2012 (UNIT K) BRIEFING/GUIDELINES FOR TESL STUDENTS

A. Stages in School Based Experience 1. Pre-PBS Read and prepare yourselves Know all the ELT Methodology and the theories of learning well; their strength and weakness (Ref to Larsen & PPG notes). Krashens hypothesis ELT concepts like structural/non-structural, inductive/deductive, teachercentred/student-centred, etc...

2. While-PBS During PBS , ask permission from the English to observe them teach in the classroom. Be respectful and polite. Ask permission to record the lesson. Observe the teacher and how the pupils respond to the teacher during the lesson. Note and record in your note book every step the teacher conduct the lesson: from the Set Induction to the Presentation, Practice and Production stage of the lesson. Note how the teacher organise the lesson and note down anything that you find interesting or will be helpful for your coursework 2. Record a maximum of 4 lessons if possible. Analyse the data after the lesson. Talk to the teacher and ask for clarity on any part of the lesson that you are not clear about or would like to know more, especially the lesson you have selected to answer Sub Task 1 in your Coursework 2. Be polite and respectful.

3. Post-PBS Select the lesson or lessons that you think is suitable for your coursework 2. Analyse the data and identify evidence in the activities used by the teacher in the lesson in terms of o applications of the learning theories.

the ELT techniques, methodology, and approaches used. structural and Non-structural approach to language teaching Inductive and deductive approach to language teaching teacher-centred or student-centred/ active or passive participation learning about the TL or learning how to use the language, or using the TL to interact and communicate. o whether the teacher is teaching language skills such as listening, speaking, reading or writing Grammar such as subject-verb agreement, or preposition. learning strategies vocabulary syntax (sentences), semantics (meaning) pronunciation (phonetics/phonology) o What did the teacher use in class to deliver the lesson and to achieve the learning outcomes in terms of: types of activities (techniques) used organisation of pupils and class steps involved role of the teacher: teacher-centred, student-centred.... etc. role of the pupils teaching aids student teacher interaction error correction o How successful were the activities and techniques used by the teacher in the lesson to help the pupils acquire and learn the target language. o Give suggestions on how the lesson could have been better in helping the pupils acquire and learn the language. What are the steps you would take to make the lesson more effective? Give reasons for your suggestions. o Cite the source if you have taken any. E.g.: According to Krashen (1989).....
