Message from the Admin Team

We would like to begin this message with a big thank you to our Ryerson Community. Both Mrs. Stewart and I are new to the school this year and have had so much to learn. The Ryerson community has welcomed us and supported us in so many ways, that we cannot even begin to express our gratitude. Your children have been so helpful and kind to us throughout this challenging transition period. We are greeted with big hellos in the hallway, are asked frequently if there is anything they can do to help and receive on-going messages and pieces of proud work to display in our offices. The staff at this school has also gone above and beyond to be both welcoming and supportive. Their commitment to your children is visible everyday both in their academic programs and the extras that they do to provide an engaging, motivating school climate. We both look forward to a September start already knowing the children and many of our community members. As is common in June, we will also need to say good-bye to some staff who have moved on or have taken leaves for personal reasons. Several teachers have been covering maternity leaves over the past year and will be moving on to new roles. Ms Roberts, Mrs. Steels, Ms Uttley, Mrs. Smith, and Ms Munroe have given so much to Ryerson school and we wish them all the very best! Some of our ECE and EA staff are also moving on to new positions or life changes. Ms Hodgson, Mrs. Charron, Ms Ponce, Ms Lipke and Mrs. Jibb-Reason have provided amazing support to our students and will be sadly missed. In the fall we welcome back Mrs. Fox and in December, Mrs. Doerner returns. We will have some new staff joining as well. Mrs Wyszomierska will be teaching a primary class and Mrs. Quinlan and Mrs. Girgenti will join us as EAs. Several new Long Term Occasional teachers will be hired in July to cover our maternity leaves. Lots of changes! We will look forward to introducing new staff to everyone at the Family Barbecue in September. Have a happy, safe summer season!

Ryerson Barbecue and Science Night

Leadership Club and the Penny Drive

This year's Leadership Club wishes everyone the best Summer Vacation! Leadership club has organized many events for the school over the past year. The most recent was the Penny Drive to support Sick Kids Hospital. After many hours of careful counting, a total of $617.05 was collected. Many thanks to the Ryerson community for supporting this initiative. Thanks also to the Leadership Club students for their work and our dedicated staff (Mrs. Roberge, Ms Nichol, Mr. Grant and Ms Bates) for their year-long support of this amazing group of students.

On Thursday, June 13th, Ryerson Public School had an ESQ group visit from the University of Waterloo. There were Rockin Rockets where you could build a Rocket that goes higher than the school. This was Graces favourite activity. The Squishy Circuits were where you could play with electricity. The pink play dough conducted electricity but the blue playdough did not. It had too much sugar in it. We also visited the Floating Cities. Brooklyn built one that actually floated. There was also a barbecue for five dollars. A lot of families came to the barbecue and the Science Night. We really liked our Science Night and hope that the presenters can come back! By: Brooklynn W. and Grace W. in Room 5

Student Volunteer Thank You Grade 6 Graduation

Our Grade 6 graduation ceremony will take place in our gym on Wednesday, June 26th at 10 am. We are very excited about this event. We have over 60 graduates this year! We invite all to attend this event to celebrate these students accomplishments. We will also recognize some students who have particularly excelled in various aspects of life here at Ryerson from the 4 graduating classes this year. Attire for the graduates is semi-formal, while trying to adhere to usual school dress code. Classes from grades 1-5 will also be in attendance. Congratulations Grade 6s! Come on out, bring your camera, take in the ceremony, and enjoy some cake and punch! The staff and students of Ryerson would like to say a big "THANK YOU!!!" to our many junior students who helped our school run smoothly all year long. To express our gratitude, our bus monitors and lunch room helpers enjoyed a pizza lunch on Thursday, June 20th during First Nutrition Break. We so appreciate the willingness of these students to make Ryerson Public School a safe and happy place!

Zoo to You Visits P1

On June 18th, P1 welcomed some very interesting and exciting animals! Miss Jen brought reptiles, amphibians, mammals and even Charlotte, the tarantula. We loved watching the ferrets, Duncan and Donut, run through their long tube and play-fight with each other. It was funny when Donut tried to climb into our scissors bin! We held Dolly, the huge yellow python, around our shoulders! Have you ever seen a House Hippo? We did! But it is actually a Skinny Pig, which is a Guinea Pig with no hair! We bet the other primary classes enjoyed their Zoo to You visits as much as we did. Grade 2 Students in Portable 1

Class Lists
Class lists for grades 1 to 6 will be posted on the front entry doors to the school with the teachers name, class number and students first name on Friday, August 30st. Kindergarten information will be mailed out to all Kindergarten parents during the first week of July. Class information and staggered entry times will be included.

Ryerson's Radical Playday! By Mr. Grant, Ms. Bates, and Miss Nichol
Ryerson's Radical Playday took place on Friday June 7th, and it was another great success! This was a whole school activity run by all of the 61 Grade 6s at Ryerson. Students from Grade 1-5 were placed in 15 different cross-graded groups traveling to15 different stations created by our Grade 6s. There were numerous wet and wild activities, including water balloon toss, water blaster shootout, and drip drip drop (duck duck goose). Other activities included a maze, frisbee shootout, parachute games, musical chairs, and much much more. On playday, all students also received a freezie at the rest station for a special treat. The weather held up and we had a tremendous amount of fun during another fantastic Ryerson's Radical Playday!

Track and Field

Junior students practiced long and hard for our on-site Track Meet (June 11 and 12) and then again for the District track meet (June 21). Ryerson juniors showed great participation and determination as they learned and refined new skills. Equally impressive were the demonstrations of sportsmanship and team spirit. Congratulations Ryerson Raptors! Thanks also to the Junior teachers for their commitment and support of our students track and field efforts.

Character Education at Ryerson

The Character Education assembly to acknowledge the Students of the Month from May was held on Thursday, June 13th. The Key for May was Flexibility - being willing to change your plans or try new things. Congratulations to the following students who were voted by their classes for best demonstrating Flexibility:

TVO Kids Project

Several primary and junior classes participated in a special collaboration with TVO. On June 12 and 14, TVO Kids visited Ryerson School to videotape a new childrens program about Digital Literacy. Ryerson students were interviewed and filmed in action working on a variety of technology projects. TVO was very interested in our blogging activities and research formats. They will be using the footage taken to create an 8-part television program that informs kids and teachers about the exciting learning that can be done through technology. It was a very interesting project that gave our students a wonderful opportunity to share their knowledge and skills. We will let families know when the program is ready to air!!

End of Year Celebrations

During the month of June children keep on learning, but we also take time out to celebrate our students effort and dedication to learning throughout the year. Our junior division will be heading off to Bingeman Park for their year-end celebration on Tuesday, June 25th. On Tuesday, June 25th, the Primary students will also be enjoying a community activity. They will walk as a group to the movie theatre and share the film Monsters University Inc.. Our Kindergarten team has already enjoyed several end-of year celebration activities. They invited Reptilia to visit and share a wide variety of exotic reptiles with our kindergarten learners on June 10th and 11th. Kindergarten students also learned more about Fire Fighters as community helpers with our annual Fire Truck visit on June 13th! Classes have also scheduled outdoor picnics with family and friends. Many thanks to all the families who came to share picnic snacks and playtime with their kindergarten children. One class also held a class Art exhibit and invited all parents to attend to admire their childrens artistic talents.

School Council Update-June 2013 I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of the Ryerson Families for supporting School Council this year. With your help, we were able to raise almost $10 000. The money we raised this year, in combination with funds held over from last year allowed us to provide approximately $10 000 towards the School Greening Project. We have also provided money to help enhance the home reading program as well as the Kindergarten playground. Our most recent project was providing funds, via a grant for the Science Night. Please watch for upcoming information about the fundraisers that School Council has planned for the 2013-2014 school year. We hope that providing information about all of our events early in the year will help you plan to support the event that is best suited to your family. School council also has an ongoing fundraiser with Mabels Labels. For those of you who are gearing up for summer camp or for those that want to get a head start for fall- make sure that your childs gear is labeled so it doesnt get lost. Orders can be done online. To make sure we get credit for your purchase, go to www.ryersonps.mabel.ca. If you have any comments or suggestions, wed love to hear them. Feel free to send in a note to the school addressed to School Council or send us an email at ryersonschoolcouncil@hotmail.ca. Thanks! Amy Willard-Brown Council Chairperson
