June 1st marked the start of this years Summer Reading Program at your local San Luis Obispo County Library. Children and teens are all welcome to sign up to earn fabulous rewards for reading library books. Studies show that kids who continue to read throughout their summer breaks retain and maintain the skills learned in the classroom far better than those who dont. The habit of weekly visits to the library can also keep kids in the loop with friends and other families as they all gravitate to the heart of their communities! Dig Into Reading @ Your Library is the theme for children from toddlers up to fifth grade, and even babies can earn a board book this summer. Children who are lap readers, those who have books read to them, and beginning readers will read 20 books to complete their book logs. Teens and children who are chapter book readers will finish with 10 books. The rewards are fabulous! Not only do readers have the pleasure of wonderful books, they will receive a beautiful canvas book bag from Cloud Star featuring local artists, a book of their own, and coupons from local businesses that love to support childrens literacy! Teens who read Beneath the Surface @ Your Library will have the added incentive of entering a raffle for an iPod Touch! This year, we will have Reading Logs available to print on our website as well as in person. Just bring the completed log to your local branch Library for your rewards. Reading problems exposed!

If your child struggles with reading, or if his reading lacks fluency, you are not alone! Many children learn to read, but lack automatic decoding and strong comprehension. The foundational building blocks (called processing skills) must be in place in order to read efficiently. The primary processing skills for reading include: auditory processing, visual processing, language processing, memory, and attention. Highlights of each area and their impact on reading are shared below. Auditory processing is your brains ability to correctly interpret sounds and sound combinations that are received by your ears. Phonemic awareness is one aspect of auditory processing and it is the ability to correctly receive and manipulate sounds. It is the greatest predictor of reading success. Weak auditory processing can be compared to being on a bad cell phone call; you only get bits and pieces of information and it causes confusion, frustration, and anxiety. Children with auditory processing problems often say Huh? and strain to listen and keep up with conversations. Visual processing is your brains ability to accurately and efficiently process information received through your eyes. Paul Madaul noted that reading requires translation of visual symbols into an internal auditory image held in the mind. The visual symbols, or letters, require your eyes to work well together. Children with poor visual processing may have problems with reading such as: skipping letters, words, or lines. Many of these children look at a page of words or math problems and the numbers and organization on the page do not make sense. According to Sally Goddard Blythe, children with dyslexia who have visual processing and motorperceptual problems have difficulty with understanding direction, sequencing, and control of eye movements. Language processing skills are a critical component of reading. The purpose of reading is to comprehend new information, and in order to comprehend, children must have good vocabulary knowledge. Understanding nonliteral language is important in order to discover the underlying meaning of words. Another aspect critical to comprehension is visualization (i.e.,
turning language into a visualized image in your mind). Good language expression while reading aloud requires fluency, phrasing, rhythm, and intonation. Memory processing is the ability to retain information long enough for it to be useful. According to Joan Smith, PhD, good visual and auditory memory is necessary for reading since they impact word-attack and comprehension. Children who have weak memory skills are unable to remember the sequence of letters to quickly recall words, and they are unable to retain what they read. Attention impacts all areas of brain processing and learning. Conversely, weak underlying processing skills, such as those previously mentioned, will stress attention. A reading problem can result if any of the processing skills mentioned above are weak. When this is the case, too much energy is spent trying to compensate for the weaknesses, so reading and comprehension are severely compromised. The problems will continue unless the weak skills are remediated by building new neuropathways in the brain. If your child is struggling to read by age 6, you will need to rule-out the following problems: eyesight (optometrist), hearing (audiologist), and processing skills including auditory, visual, attention, memory, and language, at a specialized learning center. The keys to a successful remediation program begin with correctly identifying weak processing areas with a specialized program to correct them. This will allow your child to rediscover his potential and restore confidence in his ability to read and learn.

Summer is finally here, and going to the beach is one activity that most kids love. I suggest heading to Morro Bay, to enjoy the beach on one side of the Rock and the beautiful view of the bay on the other side. When you pack up for your trip, be sure to bring this article about historic Morro Bay fun. Let me start with the island. Yes, at one time Morro Bay had its own island. The island I am referring to is Morro Rock. For thousands of years, Morro Rock was an island. At low tide, some people would try to wade across the water that would go up to their armpits or they would hop in a row boat to have a picnic along the shore of the rock. It wasnt until 1933 that the Works Progress Administration (WPA) blasted the Rock to get materials to build a road from the mainland to the Rock.
was once called 5th Street, when most of the streets were numbered or lettered. It might be a good idea to park the car near the Bank of America on Morro Bay Blvd. Lets walk up the street until you get to 400 MBB, which is currently leased by a nice little resale boutique called Threads. What you are standing in front of was the first real ice cream shop in town. It was called Morro Bay Creamery and the name wrapped the building in really cool neon lights. The huge windows in front enticed all the kids in town to look in and try to convince their parents to take them in for an ice cream. I used to work with Dan Stanley at Morro Elementary School, and he remembered going in this place as a kid with his buddies to spend all of their money at the Creamery on malts and hot fudge sundaes.
In 1957, a pinball arcade opened about two blocks from Morro Elementary School. Parents got together and formed a committee to ask the Board of Supervisors to outlaw the evil machines. The committee feared that kids would spend their lunch money playing pinball instead of buying lunch. Within three months, the arcade was shut down. By January of 1958, all pinball machines were outlawed in San Luis Obispo County. Im pretty sure its okay to play pinball in town now, because my wife and I went to Cool Cats restaurant the other day and we didnt get busted for playing an old Elton John Captain Fantastic pinball machine. When you are standing in front of the old Creamery, look across the street and you will see a two-story brick building. Today, John Ramos art gallery displays his paintings at this very historic location. This is one of the oldest buildings in town, and it has a wonderful history. The building you are looking at was built in the 1910s or 1920s and was the city post office. It was run by Postmistress Lillie Anderson.
cover up the second floor windows with a giant billboard. Several years ago, after a major building update, the owners decided to do the right thing and restore the building to its original design. Now lets cross the street. At the corner of Morro Bay Blvd and Monterey, (originally 5th Street and C Street) is Jug Liquor. They have been there for a long time, but if you look at this location for a few minutes, you may be able to imagine the gas station that was once at this location. Most of the old postcards I have of Morro Bay Blvd show Richfield gas station at the corner. You can imagine the gas pumps in the middle of what is now the parking lot. That little tobacco store was also part of the gas station. The next place to visit is next door to Jug Liquor. Today its called Central Coast Music, but it was at one time the towns first real movie theater. If you walk in, go to the back of the business and you will see a very cool stage where plays would also be performed. You can also check out the front of the building and notice all the light sockets that would light up in the evening and attract the town to come down to enjoy a movie. Enjoy a scenic drive to Morro Bay this summer. There are many more old buildings in town, so walk around and explore this historic area.
As you take that ride out to the Rock, realize that the road you are driving on is built of layers and layers of rock and dirt that came directly from Morro Rock. I could go on and on about the Rock, but I have other places in mind for you to visit. Turn around and head back on the Embarcadero, check out all of the tourist stores, and make your way up to Morro Bay Blvd (MBB). Heres another little bit of trivia about the little building next door to Threads. Today, at 410 Morro Bay Blvd is a business called Castaways, but in 1960 a person would come down to 410 to play pool because this was the Morro Bay Recreation Center Pool Hall. Its funny that in 1960, pool halls were great fun for the people in Morro Bay, but in 1957 there was a big controversy in town about pinball machines.
The Post Office was on the left side of the building and the Anderson Dry Goods store was on the right side. At some point in the 1950s, the owner of the building decided to
