Mantra is a vehicle for expansion of mind and liberation of energy. It is the science of going deeper into the spheres of our minds in order to understand, balance and liberate our thought processes. Yogic mantras influence the deeper nature of the universe. They are very powerful and when you practise them, they create a great force in the atmosphere. The mantra is a combination or assembly of powerful sound waves which where revealed to enlightened yogis up to 10,000 years ago. The intellectual understanding of the mantra is not at all necessary. It is not the meaning, but the vibration created by repeating the mantra which influence the internal and external experience. There are some mantras which are beyond a literal meaning, such as Om, which is the source of all mantras and creation. The rishis realized this cosmic Om in the very highest planes of consciousness and self-realisation. Om is composed of three sounds A, U and M. Its symbol is Chanting mantra creates subtle changes to the body and mind. Like a mood creates a vibration in the body, the sounds from these mantras create certain vibrations that uplift the mind and open the heart to help set a spiritual tone to the day and to life. These mantras demagnatise the negative energies of the body and mind, strengthen positive aspects, and awaken creative qualities. They may be chanted out loud, or mentally repeated with awareness focused on the breath at the nose tip or at the third eye. Mantras tend to influence, purify and awaken the psychic vibratory field. Whether you understand them rationally, logically or not, isn't important. By chanting and repeating a mantra, some form of internal change is brought about which may not be experienced on the outer level immediately. Acceptance of the mind is a very important attitude during the practice of mantra. To live with our own thoughts and feelings is very difficult. People suffer from inferiority and guilt due to their own mind, their own mental behaviour. If you can come out of this by understanding and accepting the mind, you will progress in all aspects of your life. It doesn't matter how long you can sit in the lotus position, you can hold your mala for fifteen years and still be wrestling with the mind. What matters is that you learn to live with the mind, to understand the mind, and to utilise the perceptions that it is projecting before you. Whenever the mind is disturbed, you must find out what is the cause of the disturbance - the sound, the individual, the situation. Before you can get peace of mind, before you can transcend the mind, you must be able to face all the disturbances of the mind whilst trying to become a witness of all that is happening- this is the attitude that must be developed in the practice of mantra. -Adapted from Satyananda Yoga and Bihar School of Yoga teachings

Om. That is full, this is full. From the full, the full is taken, the full has come (fullness proceeds from fullness). If you take out the full from the full, the full alone remains.
