Fill Material may be used on remainder of Site, subject to provisions below and specific notes on the Construction Drawings. On-Site Fill Material: Company Representative approved satisfactory material removed from excavation shall be used as far as practical for fill. Soil rock mixture which is free from organic matter containing no vegetation, masses of roots, rocks or lumps over 100 mm in diameter and having not more than 15% of the rocks and lumps larger than 60 mm, shall be considered as suitable material for fill. 1. On-Site fill material may not be used for Select Fill unless it has been tested by a laboratory and shown to meet the requirements in Paragraph 2.01, D, in this Section for Select Fill Materials. Any On-Site fill material containing expansive clays, such as Hofuf Clay, shall not be used for any purpose on the site. It must be disposed to OffSite.

PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 EXCAVATION A. Unclassified removing all construction Construction Excavations: Excavation WORK shall consist of dewatering and material which includes solids and rock necessary for grading and in accordance with the lines and grades as shown on the Drawings.

B.

Excavated Material: Excavated material shall be designated as suitable or unsuitable for use as fill by Company Representative. Suitable excavated material may be used to construct fill areas. Unsuitable material such as silts or clays containing organic material, soils containing large amount of rock, roots, grasses and other vegetation, soils containing expansive clays shall be disposed of Off-Site in conformance with Section-02110, Clearing And Grubbing, at the CONTRACTOR'S expense. Encountered Unsuitable Material Below Grade: Unsuitable material encountered at or below plan elevations shall be completely removed to its full depth or to a depth of one (1) meter whichever comes first and replaced with suitable fill material. Bottoms of excavations shall be smooth and free of loose earth or sand. Any soft or loose areas of insufficient bearing, as determined by Company Representative, shall be compacted to the density requirements. Underground Service Utility: If any underground utility (electrical, drainage, water etc.) is encountered unexpectedly, excavation shall cease and Company Representative shall be notified immediately. Emergency rectification WORK as necessary shall be executed without delay in accordance with the Contract. SECTION 02210

Excavation for Structures: Excavation shall be made accurately to the lines, grades and elevations shown on the Construction Drawings. CONTRACTOR shall provide sufficient dewatering equipment such that there will be no standing or flowing water in excavated areas during construction operations such as placing concrete or compacting fill. Trenches and foundation pits shall be of sufficient size to permit the placement and removal of forms for the full length and width of structure footings and foundation shown on the Construction Drawings. Rock or other hard material shall be cleaned of loose debris and cut to a firm surface, either level, stepped, or serrated, as shown or as directed. Loose disintegrated rock and thin strata shall be removed. When concrete or masonry is to be placed in an excavated area, the top of the existing subgrade shall be firmly compacted. Hand Excavation: Hand excavation will be required for WORK adjacent to the existing utilities as specified by Company Representative or the utility agency's requirements. Proof Rolling: The bottom layer of existing material in any excavation shall be proof rolled with a roller compactor having a gross weight of 8 tons minimum, or otherwise compacted to the satisfaction of Company Representative prior to backfilling. Testing of this layer of compaction will not be required, if one or more layers of fill will be added which will be tested.

3.02

FILL A. Select Fill shall be used for all fill under buildings and for a distance of 3 meters outside the outer line of the buildings. For other structures it shall be used within 600 mm of the bottom elevation of foundations or spread footings and shall be Select Fill Materials materials as described in Paragraph 2.01, D, of this Section. Preparation of Ground Surface for Fill: Ground surface on which fill is to be placed shall be plowed, disked, or otherwise broken up; pulverized; moistened or aerated as necessary; thoroughly mixed; and proof rolled. Placing Fill: Fill materials shall be placed in successive horizontal lifts or layers not to exceed 200 mm in depth. Each layer, before starting the next, shall be leveled and smoothed by means of power driven graders, bulldozers or other suitable equipment. Hauling and spreading equipment shall be operated over the full width of each layer Compaction: All fills shall be compacted to 70 percent relative density as defined by ASTM D4253 and D4254 (for cohesionless materials) or 95 percent of the maximum density determined by ASTM D698 (for cohesive materials). 1. When the backfill materials cannot clearly be classified as cohesive or cohesionless both relative and proctor density tests must be performed per above paragraph. The backfill shall then be compacted to the greater density.

Backfilling adjacent to Structures: Backfill shall be placed and compacted uniformly in such a manner as to prevent wedging action or eccentric loading upon or adjacent the structures. Large compaction equipment (over 1 ton capacity) shall not be used within 3 Meters of any existing structures without specific written approval of Company Representative. Borrow Pit: Prior to importing borrow materials and/or transporting fill material to WORK Site areas requiring fill, the CONTRACTOR shall submit his laboratory tests supporting the materials qualifications. Company Representative reserves the right to inspect and make tests of the fill material for conformity with the Specifications. Fill material which does not meet the requirements of Specifications shall not be used and, if on the WORK Site, shall be removed from the WORK Site at CONTRACTOR'S expense. Select Fill shall be used within 600mm of the bottom elevation of foundations, spread footings or slab on grade, and shall be "Select Fill Materials as described in Paragraph 2.01,D. of this Section.

3.03

GRADING A. General: The surfaces of all excavation, backfilling, compaction, embankments, and subgrades shall be finished reasonably smoothly and compacted in accordance with the lines, grades and elevations shown on the Construction Drawings. The workmanship expected shall be that ordinarily obtained from careful blade grader operations. Areas not accessible by power equipment shall be graded by hand methods to eliminate all surface humps, ridges, and depressions. Ditches and Swales: Ditches and swales shall be graded to the acceptance of so as to permit adequate drainage away from buildings, roadway surfaces or flat spots and prevent ponding. Roadway and Shoulders: Roadway and shoulders shall be given a neat finish grade and slope away from the roadway centerline as shown on the Construction Drawings or as directed by Company Representative. Sideslopes and Backslopes: All open or exposed roadway or embankment slopes, shall be dressed to fit into abutting areas by smooth curves and to eliminate all abrupt slope changes, but shall not be steeper than two horizontal to one vertical.

B.

C.

D.

3.04

COMPACTION TEST A. Methods: To verify that the specified degree of compaction has been achieved, CONTRACTOR shall perform in-place density tests ASTM D-1556 or D-2922 after compaction of each lift of fill and performed at the top layer and at least one lift thickness below the compacted surface. Number of Tests: At general fill areas, at least one test for each 100 cubic meters. In trenches, one test per lift per 30 meters of length. During the progress of the WORK, Company Representative may require additional tests in order to verify the degree of compaction. There shall be no additional cost to SAUDI ARAMCO for such tests. Tolerance: Fill shall be placed and compacted to the grades shown on the Construction Drawings to, within a tolerance of zero below and 50 mm above grade. Embankment slopes shall be constructed to within 150 mm of the plan location. END OF SECTION
