All reinforcing bars shall be epoxy coated in accordance with SAUDI ARAMCO Standards, 09-SAMSS-106 and SAES-Q-001 Appendix "A". Welded bar mats in precast concrete work shall be galvanized in accordance with ASTM A525, if not epoxy coated. Tie wire for reinforcement shall be 16 gauge (or heavier where noted or specified) plastic or nylon coated steel wire conforming to ASTM A-82 and SAUDI ARAMCO Standard, SAES-Q-001.

b.

B.

Welded Wire Fabric: 1. 2. 3. Welded wire fabric shall be electrically welded cold drawn wire in conformance with ASTM A-185. Deformed welded wire fabric shall be electrically welded cold drawn wire in conformance with ASTM A-497. All welded wire fabric, other than for site paving and sidewalks, shall be galvanized, in accordance with SAUDI ARAMCO Standard, SAES-Q-001.

When concrete surfaces are exposed where weather or rust could impair the architectural finish, provide plastic or stainless steel accessories when accessories are in contact with formwork. D. Other Accessories: Spacers, chairs, bolsters, ties and devices for placing, spacing, supporting and fastening steel reinforcement shall be plastic or plastic coated and shall conform to the requirements of the Concrete Reinforcement Steel Institute (CRSI) "Manual of Standard Practice For Reinforced Concrete Construction". 2.02 FABRICATION A. All reinforcing bars shall be cut and fabricated in accordance with the shapes and dimensions shown on the Construction Drawings and in accordance with SAUDI ARAMCO Engineering Standard, SAES.Q-001. All cut ends of bars shall be epoxy coated in accordance with SAES-Q-001. Hooks and bends shall be made in accordance with SAUDI ARAMCO Engineering Standard SAES-Q-001 Paragraph A.2.2. Ensure that shaped reinforcement will fit correctly within the unit parameters and concrete cover requirements which are applicable. Allow for correct bar lap lengths. All bars shall be bent cold. Bars showing any evidence of being heated for bending or straightening shall be rejected. Bars shall be cut to length with a tolerance of 25 mm (1 in) and bent with a tolerance of 12 mm (1/2 in) for the overall length except that 25 mm bars and larger may be bent with a tolerance of 25 mm (1 in). The mandrel (or pin) around which the rebar is bent shall be fabricated from (or covered with a collar of) wood, nylon or other non-abrasive material which will not damage the epoxy coating. Minimum bend diameters for FBE coated rebar shall be in accordance with SUADI ARAMCO Standard, SAES-Q-001, Appendix "A". Reinforcing steel having a reduced section, kinks, visible transverse cracks at bends, or otherwise damaged in any way will not be acceptable.

PLACEMENT A. GENERAL 1. The installation of all epoxy coated reinforcing bars shall be in accordance with SAUDI ARAMCO Engineering Standard SAES-Q-001, Appendix "A", Specification, provisions for epoxy coated reinforcing bars. Epoxy coated reinforcement shall be shop fabricated to the shapes and dimensions shown on the Construction Drawings and in compliance with applicable Codes and Standards. Reinforcing steel shall be checked against approved shop drawings and steel bending details to insure that all of the steel is in place. Chairs, spacers and hangers shall be spaced in accordance with ACI-315 and ACI-318. Reinforcement shall be supported and fastened together to prevent displacement beyond tolerances as stated in ACI-318 from construction loads or from the placing of concrete. Bars shall be fastened together at crossings with a double wrap of annealed epoxy coated 16 gauge wire with at least two full twists. In slabs and walls having numerous bars in grid arrangement, Company Representative may permit omission of ties at some intersections. In this case, the spacing of ties along the line of any bar shall not exceed 600 mm (24 in) horizontally or vertically. Splices shall be tied with two wires. In slabs, beams and girders, splices of reinforcement at points of maximum stress shall generally be avoided. The minimum lap for a lapped splice shall be in accordance with L = dfs/4 u, but in no case less than 30 diameters for plain bars or 24 diameters for deformed bars, with a minimum of 300 mm (12 in). Splices not shown on the Construction Drawings, or approved shop drawings, shall be subject to approval by Company Representative. a. b. c. d. 7. L = minimum lap splice d = diameter of steel reinforcement fs = allowable tensile stress in steel reinforcement u = allowable bond strength of concrete to steel

2.

3. 4. 5.

6.

After cutting tie-wires, turn the ends to the inside of the section and bend so that concrete placement will not force the wire ends to the exposed concrete surfaces. SECTION 03200

Welded Wire Fabric: 1. Rolled, welded wire fabric shall be unrolled and straightened so that it will be flat and be kept in position in the slabs as shown on the Construction Drawings. Chairs, supports and spacers shall be used as needed to place fabric at the elevations shown on the Construction Drawings. All sheets, at all edges, shall be lapped one full mesh plus 50 mm (2 in) and shall be securely wired together on 400 mm (16 in) centers or less. While concrete is being placed, fabric shall be lifted into proper positions.

2. 3. C.

Clearances: 1. 2. All reinforcement shall be supported from the ground, sub-slabs, or leveling courses by means of plastic or plastic coated chairs or spacers. Reinforcement in formed concrete shall be fixed in position by means specified in Paragraph 3.02A Placement, of this Section so that the following clearances from the surface of the concrete will be maintained: a. b. c. 25 mm (1 in) Concrete slab or foundation over 50 mm (2 in) subslab or leveling course. 75 mm (3 in) Unformed concrete deposited against ground. 75 mm (3 in) Formed concrete against ground or exposed to weather for bars larger than 16 mm (5/8 in) in diameter. 50 mm (2 in) Beams, girders and columns not exposed to ground or to weather. 25 mm (1 in) Slabs and walls not exposed to ground or to weather. 75 mm (3 in) Concrete exposed to sewage.

d. e. f. D. Tolerances:

Reinforcing bars shall be placed to the following tolerances: 1. 2. Clear distance to formed surfaces: Minimum spacing between bars: + 6 mm (1/4 in) + 6 mm (1/4 in)

Top bars in slabs and beams: SECTION 03200
