Collins wins
Season Finale on Rayburn
Courtesy of ABAproam.com
ATHENS, Ala. Defending Boater Division champion Albert
Collins ended the Toyota Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated
by American Bass Anglers, South East Texas Division 10 regular
season with a Lake Sam Rayburn win on June 8, 2013.
Running out of Umphrey Pavilion near Jasper, Texas, to sh the
114,500-acre lake, the Nacogdoches, Texas, angler who represented
BWS at the 2013 Bassmaster Classic caught ve bass weighing
19.78 pounds for a 3.96-pound average. For the Boater Division
victory, Collins collected a check for $2,745. As the Triton Gold
winner, he picked up another $7,000.
I spent a lot of time looking at a lot of different areas on the
lake, the champ advised. I shed scattered hydrilla and bushes
around ditches coming off the ats with a Spro Popping Frog in
Halloween color. I worked it really slowly. Every sh I caught hit
the frog when it was sitting dead still. I caught about 15 bass, but
only nine keepers.
Earlier in the week, Collins won the B.A.S.S. Nation Central
Divisional tournament, also held on Lake Sam Rayburn. During
that event, Collins brought in a three-day limit of 15 bass weighing
53.25 pounds for a 3.55-pound average.
In second for the boaters, Darren Roberts, 40, also of
Nacogdoches, Texas, landed a ve-bass tournament limit going
18.63 pounds. He collected $1,373 for the effort.
I concentrated on drains with grass on the edges, Roberts
said. The sh were on the inside point of the drain. I caught all
my sh on a white Spro frog. I had to let it sit a lot. A lot of the
bites came when it was just sitting. I didnt catch a lot of sh, but
the ones I did catch were good ones. I caught about 12 sh.
Chad Wile, 35, of Pineville, La., nished third among the boaters
with ve bass and 16.60 pounds. He anchored his sack with a
6.39-pound kicker that took the tournament lunker honors. For
third place, Wiley earned a check for $915 plus another $315 for
the big bass.
The bite was on, Wiley remarked. By 7 a.m., I had my limit,
but caught sh all day. We shed a drain funneling down off the
main river in 18 feet of water coming off 35 feet. I caught about 25
sh. I threw a Stanley football jig. I also caught bass on a 10-inch
Berkley Power Worm.
Jason Robertson of Pineville, La., took fourth place with a ve-
bass limit at 14 pounds with a 4.39-pound kicker. Lane McGaha
of Ruston, La., brought in ve bass and took fth place with 13.26
pound that included a 5.65-pounder.
In the Co-Angler Division, Russell J. Traylor, 51, of Broaddus,
Texas, won with three bass going 11.81 pounds for a 3.93-pound
average. He sealed his victory with a 5.07-pound kicker to pocket a
check for $1,329.
I caught sh on brown jigs with a green pumpkin trailer on
it and Carolina rigs, Traylor explained. I tipped the Carolina
rig with brush hogs or black trick worms. We caught a lot of sh,
probably about 15.
Taking second for the co-anglers, Bryan P. Trahan of Orange,
Texas, brought in a three-bass division limit for 8.20 pounds
including a 4.58-pound kicker. Pete Lammons of Houston, Texas,
came in third among the co-anglers with three bass and 7.79
pounds, followed by Terrell Ross of Port Neches, Texas, with three
bass and 6.80 pounds. Ronald W. Slawson of Leesville, La., rounded
out the top ve co-anglers with three bass at 6.30 pounds. Robert
B. Bean of Liberty, Texas, landed one bass, but his 5.09-pounder
took the division big bass title.
The two-day divisional championship tournament will also be
held on Lake Sam Rayburn. Slated for Sept. 7-8, 2013, the event
will run out of Umphrey Pavilion near Jasper. At the end of the
season, one BWS angler will win the opportunity to compete in the
2014 Bassmaster Classic, just like Collins did earlier this year.

tournament manager, at 318-201-3474 or ABA at 256-232-0406.

By LD & Troy Knoche
Shooting the Breeze
The Pickle Loaf Incident
Boots (check!) jeans (check!) socks &
underwear (check!) better get an extra long
sleeve shirt. Ok - where is the bug spray, cuz
how long are we going to stay there? Thinking,
Oh, just two days. I will just take the bug spray
then, and some toilet paper - looks like towels
it is.
I have been all over this country (working on
the world now) and the one thing I have seen
that we all share is the outdoors. As far back
as I can remember my dad and Melvin had my
cousins and I in the woods or around water.
Always on a mission to catch, kill, nd, or just to
get the heck out of the house. It did not matter to
us the reason, or the mission, as long as the story
they gave us before we started was good then we
were in. I have learned now as I am older that
not all the correct information was given to us at
the beginning of each adventure, and that never
bothered us a bit. Who would have ever guessed
that the fun we were having then would be the
memories we kept forever.
When leaving to head out on our adventures
we all go through a checklist in our heads. Just
a run down to make sure we have everything.
If you are like us, making a list just takes up
time that you could be getting ready. You know
what you need, a list is for city folk. Weekend
warriors - you know, the ones with all the new
fancy stuff no one needs but still buys (which is
on all of our wish lists!). Never fails, we always
forget something. By the time we all meet up
at the honey hole on the river and start getting
ready for the night we nally gure out what
we forgot. Then it is on to the MacGyver-ing to
try and gure out how to survive the missing
components. Some of the best ideas ever are
dreamed up while shing or hunting. It is
amazing how much clearer you can think when
you have the great outdoors for your think tank.
I know we have solved all the worlds problems,
if they would just listen. Those are the moments
that make my time with family and friends in
the woods or on the water memories we will
never forget.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves - you guys
havent even been introduced to us. Troy and L.D.
people call us. We are cousins who learned all
we know about the great outdoors from two men
who were, thru the eyes of two little boys, larger
than life and NEVER wrong. Our dads Melvin
and Gary Knoche. Ornery? Yep! Fun loving?
Understatement of the year! Knoche? All the way.
Every family has their own stories and
larger than life relatives of the great outdoors.
Our column is going to dive head rst into
the Knoche familys adventures in the great
outdoors.
Come on over - grab a cold one, and pull up a
chair with the Cuzzins. Its time to start Shooting
the Breeze with Troy and L.D.
The Pickle Loaf Incident
Anyone who gets to know us at some point
realizes that we are wound tight and can juggle
up to 27 different conversations at once, jumping
back and forth between them all. Which is why
we ALWAYS have a checklist!
Our list that fateful night? Coolers with ice
cold beverages? Thats a gimme and always #1
on the list. Fishing gear? Yep, but not always
required. (There are alternative methods of
Catchin) Food and bait? They go hand in hand
because our Dads taught us how to make bait
out of our food. We could eat our own bait if
called for! But thats another story for another
day friends.
So what happens when you run out of food
and bait but can still think clearly? Man law
states that you then send the best driver at that
given time to leave and go get more food/bait so
we can continue catchin/eating.
Tonight it was Kevin aka Bucky who drove
back to town on a mission. (Kevin is probably the
best Catcher in the family besides his awesome
big sister but we dont want them getting big
heads so we dont let them know that!) Troy and
L.D., on the other hand, are legends in our own
minds - just ask us and we will tell you!
Here we are rambling again. Lets get back to
the river. When a man is hungry minutes turn
to hours and anything looks edible. That said,
Kevin was gone for 3 days in Im so hungry I
could eat the bark off the tree time. So an hour
later hes back.
Rock on, lets eat! One problem. Kevin brings
back the only thing worse than Great Aunt
Esthers Christmas fruit cake. Pickle Loaf! Who
eats pickle loaf?! It sounds like some kind of
disease. Fish dont even eat pickle loaf. Moral of
this story? If you cant make bait out of it dont
eat it! And for the record, we decided to just
sh on the river that night and the pickle loaf
screwed up our Catching!

Persistance Pays Off Big For Local Anglers In Historic
Sam Rayburn High School Open Bass Tournament
The annual super moon lit up the sky on
Sunday June 23rd to signal the beginning of a
super event on Sam Rayburn Lake. It was the
start of the very rst National High School Open
shing Tournament held on Big Sam. Before it
was over 86 teams of high school anglers from
5 states would need to ght the near 100 degree
temperatures to compete for scholarship awards
and bragging rights on one of the premiere bass
shing lakes in America.
Andrew YBarbo and Caleb Ramsey had been
on the phone for two days trying to locate a boat
captain for the Inaugural Sam Rayburn Open
after their boat captain had to drop out. An hour
before registration started Friday night at Jackson
Hill Marina, the pair found local lady angler
Stephanie Hemphill who agreed to take the pair
out for the day.
That combination of a timely call, a little good
luck and the skills honed from years of shing
with their proud parents on Big Sam landed the
pair a day to remember as they brought in a ve
bass limit at 10:30 am that had a net weight of 22
lbs 6 oz. They still had to wait out the rest of the
day at the weigh in site to win the Inaugural event
that was hosted by the San Augustine Chamber of
Commerce and Jackson Hill Marina. The pair not
only conquered Sam Rayburn Reservoir, but also
the other 85 teams who registered for the event
that launched out of the beautiful Bill and Emily
Shelton Pavilion.
This was probably the greatest day of shing
I have ever had, stated Andrew. We shed off
a deep ledge that dropped from 18 down to
around 30. It was just an awesome morning of
shing he added. When you start out the day
with an 8 lb 9 oz beauty as your rst sh it sure
pumps up your condence and enthusiasm
reported partner Caleb Ramsey. Andrew caught
their big sh on a deep diving crankbait but
after 30 minutes produced nothing more the
pair moved up Harvey Creek where they added
two small keepers. They returned to their ledge
about an hour later and Andrew again hooked
a big sh around 7 lbs. using a Carolina Rigged
Worm. As they moved out from their sweet
spot they noticed a school of suspended sh
and under the advisement of their boat coach
Stephanie Hemphill, Caleb tied on a jigging
spoon and sent it down below the school. It was
the right move as a fat ve pounder blasted
Calebs breakfast special.
Then the trouble began and decisions needed
to be made quickly. The two small keepers were
dying and with slim prospects of culling a ve
pound sh they decided to call it a day racing
back to try and save their sh.
The winning weight helped the pair earn
a scholarship award from Stephen F. Austin
University and the San Augustine Chamber of
Commerce along with a prize package donated
by several sponsors, a beautiful trophy, and East
Texas Bragging rights for the next year.
Finishing second was Ryan Sattereld and
Jordan Lemley from Genoa Central High School in
Arkansas who also had a very respectable ve sh
sack that weighed in at 16 lbs 11 oz. This limit
out distanced Bo McGraw and Dillon Harrell of
Houston who boated 14 lbs 14 oz to nish third.
Brendan Burford from the Buna Cougars
won mens big bass honors with an 8 lb 12 oz
big girl and Taylor Sells from Genoa Central
took the womens big bass prize with a 3 lb 10 oz
largemouth.
Local Broaddus Bulldog anglers Randy and
Robert Morgan nished a respectable eight place
shing with their dad while other hometown
favorites Tom Vardemar, Zaryon Scott Price,
Hunter Curry, Hunter Williams, Broaddus anglers,
Tayler Stewart and Brett Byley vowed to be back
next year to win it all.
All the anglers in this event were treated to
an angler celebration on Friday evening that
was hosted by the San Augustine Chamber of
Commerce. The group was invited to a downtown
High School block party where several pro
anglers and vendors met with the teams and their
families. The response from the community and
the anglers was terric and this event promises
to grow in the future said Mark Gintert National
youth Director for TBF. On a scale of ten San
Augustine gets a 9.8 and we cant wait to see what
they have in store for next year he added. Anyone
who would like to see the entire standings can
nd them at highschoolshing.org. You can also
see an entire photo album of the event at Jackson
Hill Marina on facebook.

Freeman & Rice found the right pattern at the
final Bass N Bucks Toledo Series!!
By Paul Hayes Photos from this event are available for sale at www.TheLakecaster.com
The nal BNB tournament in the Toledo Series proved to be a
tough one for the anglers. The wind in East Texas has continued to
plague bass anglers all year long and Saturday was no exception.
With this being the last in a series of ve tournaments and the
angler of the year title on the line shing proved to be very tough
all day long on the rst day of June, 2013. The wind blew from the
south and southwest all day long but some anglers were able to
adapt and nd some quality sh with four limits of over twenty
pounds each being weighed in. But at the same time only twenty
six of the forty eight teams entered came to the weigh in line at the
end of the day.
The team of Glen Freeman and Jeff Rice were able to put
together a pattern to catch the winning bag of 28.34lbs which
included a nice kicker of 7.46lbs. The sh were mostly caught on
Texas rigged worms in about fteen feet of water over ridges and
humps. The wind played havoc with their shing but they were
able to boat some quality sh. For their efforts they earned a $4000
paycheck. They said they owe a lot of thanks to God and family
followed by Ranger Boats, Yamaha, Nichols Marine, Seguar Lines,
Lowrance Electronics, Lews Speed Reels and 13 Rods.
Second place was nailed down by the team of Brian Schott
and Scott Gill with a limit of ve weighing in at 24.64lbs. It was
difcult to stay on one spot according to Brian but he and Scott
were able to nd their sh in fteen to eighteen feet of water. A
nice kicker sh of 8.17lbs caught by Scott put them up in the
money just shy of rst place to earn them a paycheck of $2000 for
their day.
Following closely in third place was the team of James Elliott
and Ron Hendricks who brought in a bag of bass weighing in at
20.91lbs. Their sh came in on Carolina rigs, jigs and crank baits.
For their efforts they brought home a prize of $1500.
Big Bass of the day went to the team of Schott and Gill with a
bass weighing 8.17 lbs to win an extra $370 for the day. She was
caught on a Texas rigged worm in fteen feet of water.
Second big bass was caught by Harvey Goodwin earning him
$150 for the day while shing solo.
Jeff Rice and Glen Freeman topped
the eld with 28.34 lbs.
Brian Schott and Scott Gill had a
limit that weighed 24.64 lbs.
James Elliott and Ron Hendricks
won 3rd place with 20.91 lbs.
Brian Schott and Scott Gill weighed in the Big
Bass of the tournament a nice 8.17 pounder.

Eagle Rock event is at the heart of giving
By Patty Lenderman
Community members far and wide came together for what
has become an annual tradition June 1st on Lake Sam Rayburn.
Eagle Rock Energy of Brookeland, TX has, for the last 16 years,
coordinated a community event that brings a host of businesses
and individuals together for the sole purpose of helping an array
of kids in need. As a whole, it is a very creative, fun and diversied
event that includes shing, food, auctions and more.
It takes the coordinators at Eagle Rock Energy nearly an entire
year to coordinate this one day event. The day itself starts off in the
wee hours of the morning with anglers launching their boats to
compete in the crappie tournament. In the mean time, volunteers
are bringing items that have been donated throughout the year
to the event headquarters at the Umphrey Family Pavilion to be
auctioned. Still other volunteers are setting up cook stations to
provide a free lunch (by Fred Rape of Jasper Lawn Service) and a
free dinner (by Balon Valve) for everyone in attendance.
Anyone can sh in the tournament for an $80 donation
per team. Angling teams bring their bounties to the scales and
volunteers line up to begin the sh cleaning process for the
evening meal. Once the meal is served, the winning teams are
announced.
While the shing tournament is fun for the participants (and
provides for the great sh fry afterward), it is not the focus of the
day. There are many different childrens organizations that do
a great many wonderful things. The money raised at this event
goes to several. Over the years there has been a diverse array
of benefactors of this event. This year CASA, Brookeland Youth
Baseball & Softball, Jasper Youth Shooting Sports Association and
Vernon Parish TRIAD and Special Kids received the much needed
funds generated by the generous hearts and wallets of everyone
involved making this annual event happen.
The items sold at the live and silent auction included many
high quality items as well as unique, one of a kind pieces. Charles
Shofner conducted the auction. This portion of the day raises the
biggest portion of the funds. Each year more community members
come out and help make the amounts ready to help these various
organizations grow. In the inaugural year, less than $1,000 was
raised. Last year over $39,000 was generated. As of this year, over
$400,000 has been donated to the various organizations.
Eagle Rock Energy would like to thank everyone who
participated in the tournament and the auction, with a
special thanks to: H&R Machine, Wells Supply, Sherry Lab, BS
Construction, D-Electrical, Martin Energy, J.L. Specialty, Champion
Technologies, Provenance Consulting, Gulf Coast Helicopter,

Congratulations to the winners

$43,650 Awarded and AOY
Announced at Bass Champs 2013 Finale
by: Alison Hart Photos from this event available at www.thelakecaster.com
A Saturday spent on Lake Sam Rayburn is
never a bad day. Especially when there is $43,650
in cash and prizes up for grabs.
June 15th marked Bass Champs 5th and
nal tournament for the East Region before
announcing its coveted Anglers of the Year
award. Along with a grand prize of $15,000
for 1st place in the tournament, not even
a sweltering heat of 95 could keep these
competitors spirits down.
144 teams made it out Saturday for their
chance at a piece of the winnings pie. However,
Bass Champs President Chad Potts made
sure winning was no easy feat for these eager
shermen: the usual 5-catch limit was decreased
to 3.
First up to the scales were Big Bass hopefuls
David Turner and Butch Harper, who brought
their lone catch in to be weighed almost
immediately after being caught. This was done
to ensure the lofty shs live release back in to
the lake. Turner and Harpers efforts proved
warranted; the bass weighed in at 10.64 lbs.
Though it was their only catch, Turner and
Harper eagerly accepted their Big Bass awards:
$1,000 and temporary bragging rights for the
big catch. The catch was made around 1:15 pm
by Turner and netted by partner Harper. Their
decision to bring the sh immediately in was
due to its size: She was too big to lay right in
the livewell, so we wanted to get her weighed in
and released as quickly as possible. The winning
catch was made using a Carolina rigged super
uke in 15 waters. When asked about their day
on the lake in general, the team replied It was
tough all day for us. Tough as the day was,
partners Turner and Harper were able to hold
18th place in the tournament (a $600 reward)
on their Big Bass weight. Add $400 total in
incentives from their sponsors Under Armour
and Costa Del Mar, and its easy to see that the
team of David Turner and Butch Harper made
out well with a total winnings amount of $2,000.
Scales ofcially opened at 3pm Saturday. The
rst catch to outweigh Turner and Harpers Big
Bass belonged to Michael and Lance Lowery
with an overall weight of 14.80 lbs. Proving to
be a competitive day, Team Lowerys weight was
beaten 3 additional times before the scales closed
later that afternoon.
Saturdays win went to brothers Jared and
Jason Dean. The two came in on top with an
overall weight of 15.56 lbs., a mere 3.84 ounces
above 2nd place. From the start of the day, the
two brothers had a game plan: sh deep water all
day. Although they commented the day started
very slowly, it appears their decision to stay deep
worked in their favor. It started out really slow
for us, but ended up turning in to a great day.
The Dean brothers lure of choice? A jig used in
deep brush piles. They caught their rst keeper
at 7:40 am with this tactic, and then patiently
played the waiting game. It wasnt until after
1pm that the last two sh of their winning trio
decided to show up. And, boy, arent the Deans
glad they did. The two brothers walked away
with not only a $15,000 grand prize, but also
a $5,000 incentive from Skeeter (for using a
genuine Skeeter boat), and a $200 bonus for use
of a Sure-Life product in their boats livewells.
Altogether, the Dean brothers walked away with
$20,200 in winnings. Not a bad way to end a
Saturday. They would like to thank their families
for their continued encouragement.
The team of Mark Mowery and Joe Mauldin
took silver with a catch of 15.32 lbs. They, too,
There were already two other sacks over 15 pounds weighed in when
brothers Jared and Jason Dean brought in their limit. They nosed ahead
by mere ounces to win 1st place with 15.56 lbs!
One last cull gave Mark Mowery and
Joe Mauldin the weight they needed
to win 2nd place with 15.32 lbs.
Brian Shook and Danny Iles won 3rd place with their 15.16
lb limit. Danny showcased their two best for the crowd.

complained of a slow-action day: Our morning
started out really slow, and we didnt have a
keeper until 10:30 am. Choosing to use frogs
in brush piles and grass, at moderate depth,
Mowery and Mauldin found themselves with
a catch limit in their boat by noon. Weighing
only 2.56 ounces more than 3rd place, Mowery
and Mauldins decision at the end of the day
to exchange a 2.3 lb. sh for one that weighed
only 5 ounces more proved to be the difference
between them nishing in 2nd or 3rd place.
Thanks to their game changing exchange, Mark
Mowery and Joe Mauldin nished the day with
$5,000 in their pockets.
3rd place and $3,000 went to the team of
Brian Shook and Danny Iles, of China, Texas
and Hemphill, Texas, respectively. Their three
sh limit brought in a strong 15.16 lb. weigh-in,
slotted only ounces below 2nd place. Striking a
common theme for the day, the two commented
that shing conditions were extremely slow: We
had a slow day, and only caught eight sh total.
We shed deep water mostly, but ipped the grass
in-between those areas. Ask for any specic
details, though, and theyll give you everything
but a straight answer, all done in good fun.
Shook and Iles stated that they used a variety of
Carolina rigged Strike King plastics up until 1pm
when they decided to exchange a 3 lb. sh for
a larger 5 lb. catch, and then called it a day. The
switch proved to be a winning move for the two
young guns who have become familiar faces
in tournament winners circles recently. Shook
and Iles would like to thank their sponsors: 6th
Sense Lures, Jordan Marine, Power Tackle Rods,
Needmore Tackle, Carlsons Marine, Costa Del
Mar, and Ranger boats.
Rounding out the top 10:
4th: $2,000 / 14.80 lbs
Michael & Lance Lowery
5th: $1,500 / 14.76 lbs
Daniel Chambers & Todd Littleton
6th: $1,000 / 13.67 lbs

7th: $ 900 / 13.06 lbs

8th: $ 800 / 12.71 lbs

9th: $ 700 / 12.42 lbs
Shelby Shaw & Lance Hughes
10th: $ 650 / 12.15 lbs

Prize amounts were handed out to teams with
9.99 lbs. or more, which translated into twenty
places getting paid. 20th place, and the last check
awarded for the day, went to Donald Randall and
Don Taylor; the team took home $600.
Saturdays tournament wrapped up with the
much-anticipated announcement of the Anglers
of the Year award. Tensions were high coming
in to this tournament; there was only a three
point difference between 1st and 2nd places for
AOY. Coming in to Saturday, the team of Martin
Elshout and Mark Price were in the lead over
Cory Rambo and Rusty Clark. The nal weight to
beat was placed by Elshout and Price when they
brought in a catch just over 8lbs. Rambo and
Clark met their challenge with a vengeance, and
claimed the coveted Anglers of the Year award
with an impressive 10.84 lb. catch. To the victor
go the spoils: Anglers of the Year Cory Rambo and
Rusty Clark will have all of their entry fees for the
2014 East Region events waived. Congratulations
on an impressive tournament season!
Even with the scorching heat and accounts
of slow, tough shing conditions, Bass Champs
ended the East Regions tournament season
at Lake Sam Rayburn on a high note. There is
little doubt that anglers and spectators alike are
already in eager anticipation of the 2014 East
Region season, because with honed skills and
perhaps a little luck, coming out on top could be
anyones reality.
The Rowdy TV Crew was on scene, lming
several top contenders in the Angler of the
Year race on the water, as well as catching the
action at the stage for the Bass Champs TV

VITAL CHOICES:
HOOKS, LINE, KNOTS AND SINKERS
by Pro Guide, Joe Joslin
As a guide on Toledo and
Rayburn I have the honor of
shing with a large number
of people who love shing and
Gods beautiful outdoors. One
thing that I attempt to do is to
help anglers make the right
choices as far as tackle to use
in various situations. One of
my day to day challenges is to
catch bass in clear water as I
spend 98% of my time on the
southern part of Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn which normally
both are clear to very clear with South Toledo being even clearer
than Rayburn most of the time.
A common mistake that I see some anglers make is to sh with
a hook that is bigger than is needed when shing various soft
plastics in clear water. The choice of hook can greatly impact the
natural action of the soft plastic that is used. A large, thick hook
on a small-to-medium soft plastics could result in less bites and
several less sh at the end of a day of shing. The key is to use
a high quality, high carbon hook which can result in a thinner,
small prole yet strong hook which will have minimal impact on
the natural action of the worm and still penetrate the mouth of the
sh. When using a straight tailed Berkley Havoc Bottom Hopper
or Trick Worm, I seldom use anything bigger than a Daiichi or
XPoint 3/0 widgap or off-set hook. Of course if I move up to a 10
inch Berkley Power Worm, then I will move up to a 4/0 or 5/0 in
the same brands/styles. Check out the carbon count on the hooks
you are using. It needs to be at least 80 ct. carbon steel rated. The
brands mentioned are 110 count rated.
I like to use Bottom Hoppers and Trick Worms when working
submerged hydrilla (12 to 25) and ease it through the grass cover
without making a big disturbance and keeping things natural to
the heavily shed bass population. These smaller prole worms
and smaller hooks described earlier also help to make this
possible. I really like the Bottom Hoppers because the tail oats. As
far as sinkers, I use the same approach by using enough sinker for
the given conditions but no more. Of course wind conditions and
depth play a part in sinker selection.
Even after we have new materials for weights like brass,
tungsten and others, I still am a fan of lead sinkers as they work.
There are lots of choices and they are cheap. I am not a fan of
shiny, bright lead sinkers but always use either old, dull leaded
sinkers or my favorite....black painted sinkers. As far as weight, I
use a lot of 3/16 oz. but will at times use 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz when
shing with Bottom Hopper and Trick Worms. However, when
using the bigger Power Worms, I will also use a heavier sinker in
the 3/8 and 1/2 oz. range and use bullet shape sinkers no matter
the weight of the sinker. Since I sh submerged grass and brush
a lot of the time, I love the way the bullet shaped sinker eases
through these forms of cover.
If you have read any of my columns that past few years you
know that I am a fanatic when it comes to line choices. Line
choices are vital in any kind of water conditions but are beyond
vital (if thats possible) in super clear conditions like I encounter
most everyday. Braided Lines: The only applications where I would
use Spiderwire Braid would be when shing Stanleys frogs, at
times on a top water pattern and also when punching a heavy
jig into heavy, matted brass. Monolament Lines: I use 15 and
17 lb. test Berkley Big Game lo-vis green mono when shing
spinnerbaits, and topwater. I also use 12 lb test sometimes on
crank baits although I am using uorocarbon more these days on
crank baits.
Fluorocarbon: I use 15 and 17 lb. test Berkley Trilene 100%
Fluorocarbon on most all of my Texas rigs, Carolina Rigs and jigs.
I also us 8 and 10 lb test Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon on wacky
and drop shot rigs. Since uorocarbon sinks, you dont want to
use it for top water applications. Fluorocarbon has revolutionized
worm shing for me and thousands of other anglers. This line has
basically no stretch, very high sensitivity, resist abrasions and is
invisible in clear water.....win, win, win and win. The only down
side is that it is more expensive than mono with a 200 yd spool of
Berkley Fluorocarbon costing about $20 plus tax. However, I can
use it without re-spooling for several hard days of shing which
helps off-set the cost. It lasts 3-4 times longer than mono.
KNOTS: The nal issue is a proper knot. For me it is pretty
simple...Palomar. I use a Palomar (see diagram) knot 99% of the
time and since going to it about 10 years ago my break-offs on big
sh have been reduced 3-fold. As good as this knot is on medium
to heavy line, it is a life saver on light line (6 to 10 lb. test) which
I use often. I have so much condence in this knot whether on
braid, mono or uorocarbon. The only thing I do different with
braid is after tying the Palomar knot I will tie one granny or
overhand knot on top of the Palomar in case there is a slight
slippage.

Stark & Morgan top the field
at the Final Spring BLT Series
By Paul Hayes Photos from this event are available for sale at www.TheLakecaster.com
On Sunday morning, June 2, 2013, anglers were greeted with a
horrendous lightning and rain storm for the rst couple of hours
of daylight. Many of them waited for it to subside before venturing
out onto the open waters of Rayburn. When the storm nally
passed the wind picked up and blew strong all day having a big
effect on the outcome of the days shing. This was the last of ve
tournaments in the Bud Light Trail Spring Series to be shed on
Lake Sam Rayburn and the turnout was small with only twenty
ve entries. The Angler of the Year for the Sam Rayburn division
was also decided at this tournament.
A hard earned rst place win was taken by the team of Bill
Stark and David Morgan who put together the winning stringer
shing frogs in shallow water. Bill commented that the bite was
good up until around 11:00 a.m. and then the sh seemed to shut
off and they did not catch another sh the rest of the day. A nice
4.90 bass added much needed weight to their catch bringing their
total to 19.38 lbs barely edging out the second place nishers. After
successfully passing a polygraph test the team was awarded $1200
in prize money. The team said they thanked the Good Lord rst,
Brian Davis and the Bud Light Trail crew and T F O Rods for the
opportunity to sh.
Second place was a near replica of rst place with the team
of Shelby Shaw and Rusty Clark nishing within .03 of the rst
place team by weighing in a total catch of 19.35 lbs. A good bass
weighing 5.86 lbs contributed to their total for the day bringing
the team a paycheck of $700 for their efforts plus more.
Third place was captured by the team of Philip Crelia and T.J.
Goodwin as they managed to put together a stringer weighing
18.02 lbs for the day. The wind was a major factor in their strategy
according to both anglers and holding on position was extremely
difcult. They were awarded a check totaling $500 for their days
winnings.
Big bass honors went to the team of Shaw and Clark for the 5.86
lb bass caught by Clark. His sh earned them an extra $250 with
Clark also receiving a sponsors prize of $100 for having Foremost
insurance and nishing highest in the money of any team
carrying their products.
The Angler of The Year Race for this series was won by the team
of N. Dee Williams and Jeff Wise who nished with enough weight
to top the rest of the eld. For their win they both received free
entry into the Sam Rayburn Bud Light Trail series in 2014.
Tournament chairman Brian Davis announced that both
the Bud Light Trail and Bass N Bucks trail will remain the
same for 2014 on Rayburn and Toledo Bend but with some new
sponsors coming on board he is hoping to raise the incentives
to attract more anglers. More information can be found at
www.budlitetrail.com.

The heat is on and summer is in full swing
here on Lake Sam Rayburn. The lake is in shape
for some great shing, swimming, waterskiing
and all kinds of fun in the sun. Picnics, barbeques
and sitting around the camp talking about old
times. Forget the worries for a little while. Now
that youve had a small taste of what you can
do, here a few things you need to bring with you
when youre out and about. Sunscreen is good to
have on hand to keep sunburn down. Have plenty
of water and other liquids to keep the thirst down.
Dont forget the sunshades and maybe a big hat
to help with the rays. If you nd yourself getting
hot a cold towel around the neck can really help.
Be prepared for the sun and heat and keep an eye
on everyone around you.
Fishing here on Sam Rayburn can be loads
of fun. With schoolies chasing shad all day they
create a lot of fun for young and old. Keep a
top water bait like a Pop-R or spoon handy and
be ready when they bust the surface. The early
morning and late evening bite is very important,
but dont think you cant nd some on offshore
structure in the middle of the day. You may even
nd a few that will move up and hide under the
lily pads in the middle of the day so watch for
them. The top water bite is just one way to catch a
few sh on Big Sam this time of year. A Stanley
Ribbit can be an awesome bait to cover the grass
and lily pads that grow around the lake giving
the bass some cover to hide in. There are three
types of structure to look for here, Pepper Grass,
Hydrilla and Lily Pads. All are bass magnets this
time of year.
Now that weve covered the top water, lets
look at getting in there with Stanley spinner
baits. Chunking into the pockets around grass
and lily pads can get some sh to come out and
play. Or, try pulling a few crank baits in the same
area. If you sh slowly, throwing a Senko or a
wacky worm in there can get some nice action.
Now for the guys that want to get down and dirty.
If the grass mats over anywhere, break out the
Stanley grass jigs and get to work. This isnt for
everyone and can be a lot of work pitching miles
of grass edges till you run across a small group of
sh. Some guys go out there looking for 5 bites a
day but they are looking for big sh. Remember
jigs catch big sh, and thats what a lot of folks
are looking for. Now for the deep plastic baits, big
worms and creature baits on a Carolina or Texas
rig off long points and humps. Working water
depths from 10 to 25 feet off the edges is work.
Finding the cover the bass are using is the rst
thing to look for, then get to work and see if the
sh are home and if they even want to play.
Crappie shing on Sam Rayburn can be a lot
of fun with some slabs going as much as 2 lbs.
Crappie shing is for young and old alike. These
little critters are about the best tasting sh you
can get. Fishing around the bridges under the
shade can put a few sh in the box. The other
way is to sh the stumps thru out the lake. Even
better, put a few brush tops around those stumps
and youve created some dandy shing spots.
Brush piles are very important to shing for
crappie at this time of year and learning how to
build them and getting them to work is tricky. If
you build them close to trees or stumps you can
just tie up and sh. If youre building them in
open water you have to use your trolling motor to
hold you in position. Now, for the guys that dont
have a trolling motor you have to be very careful
because getting the anchor hooked into the
brush pile is bad business. Not only will it mess
up the shing, when you start to haul the anchor
you tear up the pile and make it useless. What
you want to do is anchor up wind, say about 50
ft. or more, make sure the anchor is holding and
youre not dragging it into the pile. Then drift
back to the pile. If you swing around a lot you
can get one of the mushroom anchors and let
it out straight down to help slow the drifting. It
wont tear things up like the ones with the blades
and will usually help slow the swinging around. I
have put two of them down with one on each side
to help hold the boat still. Remember it isnt any
fun to build a good brush pile and then tear it up
the rst time you use it. I know.
For those that dont have a boat and would like
to do a little Crappie shing I have a Pontoon boat
that can handle up to 8 anglers. It has a changing
room and port-o-potty. Grab the kids, your friends,
and come have some fun. Ive been shing a young
couple for a few years now. With the pontoon they
brought another couple with them, split the price
and saved a chuck of money. We have plenty of
shade to get out of the sun so get your trips booked.
Come on and get in on the fun.
Well here we are at the rst of July and with
the 4th falling on a Thursday this year, while
it might not be as busy as some holidays, well
still have high numbers of people shing and
playing all around the lake so before we get on
with the shing report, let me get on my soapbox
and talk about safety rst! Be sure and keep an
eye out for other boats and jet skis that will be
sharing the water this weekend and all summer.
Its always best to assume that the other guy
doesnt have as much experience on the water,
so watch out for yourself, and him. We want
everybody to have a good and safe holiday on
Lake Sam Rayburn. Wear your life jackets, or
PFDs, be respectful of other boats/people on the
water, and use common sense! We can all have
fun on the water all summer long!
Now on to the good stuff, the shing. . . the
lake is still running about 2 to 3 weeks behind
like its been all year but the water temp has
nally gotten into the low 80s as of press time.
With that being said it has really kept the bass
on the banks; few sh have made their way off
of them. If you havent been on the lake much
this spring, youll notice that there is ooded
grass all over the banks, and more grass all over
elsewhere, and while this is good for the sh, it
does make it tougher for the shermen.
Last month, we saw the top water action was
slow to start but as the water temp reached into
the 80s it got going and should remain strong.
When the top water action is good the frog
action will be too so keep that in mind. Start
off with a Yellow Magic, Pop R, Spook or V&M
buzz bait. These baits are all good on the edge
of the grass, or if you can nd a hole behind
the grass sh that also. For the frog sh, I like
a hollow belly frog such as a Strike King Sexy
Frog, or Spro Frog, and then throw it in the
thickest patch of grass or hay grass you can nd.
Both the top water and frog techniques are good
ways to catch them all day long, and crazy as
it may seem, on most days, the hotter it gets in
the middle of the day the better the bite will get!
Another way to catch them is to use a wacky
or Texas rigged worm or stick style bait on the
edge of the grass. This will be from 6 to 10ft
deep depending on what area of the lake you are
shing. For the wacky rig, if using a straight tail
worm, its best to use a small nail in the head
to help it drop, and good color choices are red
bug and plum crazy. For the stick bait, I like to
sh a V&M Chop Stick weightless or Texas rig
it with an 1/8 oz weight, in watermelon red or
watermelon colors. Now, on the Texas rig, I like
to use a 3/16 or 1/4 oz Strike King Tungsten
weight, and I also like to match the color of the
weight with the color of the worm Im using.
You can use a 6 to 10 worm for your Texas
rig and the best colors are redbug, plumapple,
and junebug.
As we move on into the hottest part of the
summer the sh should start showing up on the
main lake points, in from 12 to 18ft of water.
I use my Humminbird graph to nd out what
depth the shad are holding in to get a good idea
of what depth to start shing in. Dragging a
Carolina rig works great on these deeper sh,
with either a worm or brush hog for a bait. You
can also crank a Strike King 5XD or 6XD in these
areas, and if you want to go still deeper, tie on
the 10XD.
Well see some good schooling action
primarily late afternoon that will include black
bass, white bass and yellow bass. Watch for this
in the mid lake areas on calm days; these sh
like it slick! You can catch these sh on any shad
colored or clear top water bait, shad colored or
chrome lipless bait, as well as a slab spoon. Once
you have found a group and they go down, you
can use a crankbait to catch them until they get
back to the surface and begin schooling again.
Many times, I nd that the white bass and yellow
bass will not break the surface, but rather will
be just under the black bass schooling, and the
best way to catch them is to use a slab spoon and
work it under the schooling bass.
July means lots of action of the lake, shing
and otherwise! Its a great month to get out and
have some fun on the water and with family
and friends, so have fun and be safe! Want

Gleason & Burns went deep to win Southern
Outdoor Production tournament on Toledo
By Doug Schysm
Southern Outdoor Productions hosted
its inaugural event on Toledo Bend June
15th out of Fin and Feather Marina.
Overall the anglers reported that the
shing was good and most of the sh
were being caught in deeper water which
is pretty normal for this time of year
because of the rising water temperatures.
Here is how the tournament unfolded:
1st place went to Darold Gleason
and Jared Burns with team weight
of 24.03 lbs and big bass of 5.66 lbs.
They reported catching sh in 20 of
water targeting main lake points and
structure. Majority of the sh were
caught on 3/4oz V&M football Jigs
with V&M swamp hog trailers and also
reported catching sh using a Texas rig
with V&M Pro Mag Worm Red Bug in
color.
2nd place went to Jeremy Burge and
Kraig Welborn with a stringer weight
of 17.04 lbs and 3rd place went to Todd
Areno and Charlie Westmoreland with a
stringer weight of 13.36 lbs.
I would like to thank everyone
for participating in this event. Our
next tournament will be July 6th on
Toledo Bend then July 27 at Jackson
Hill Marina on Sam Rayburn. You
can call 337-884-1183 for more
details or visit our website for a
full schedule of tournaments.

Dan Ashe (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department)
Temperature
Effects on Fish
Temperature plays a signicant role with
overall performance, behavior, and health of
sh. Fish can be grouped into three categories
based on their temperature preferences which
include cold, cool, and warm water. Most of the
sh species we have here in East Texas lakes are
warm water sh. However, notable cool water
sh we have include crappie and freshwater
drum. Both warm and cool water sh can exist
in the same environment, but they will respond
differently to temperature. Temperatures largest
effects are on rst year survival, swimming
performance, feeding / digestion, spawning, and
the susceptibility to diseases.
Water temperature can greatly determine rst
year survival of sh. A brutal winter can be the
deciding factor of an entire missing year class.
Likewise, a mild winter can yield a phenomenal
year class that can sustain a shery for years
afterwards. Even though we may complain
about occasional cold snaps, Sam Rayburn/
Toledo Bend winters are relatively mild and have
little impact on year class strength (water levels
and forage do). In more northern latitudes,
winters are a major deciding factor for rst
year survival. Size of young sh inuences
their winter survivability more than just
about anything else. Small sh have increased
likelihood of starvation (less available food),
predation risk (more vulnerable than larger
sh), and osmoregulatory failure because gill
membrane permeability changes compromising
ion (i.e. oxygen) transport.
Fish are cold blooded animals that are
technically classied as poikilotherms
meaning their body temperature is directly
related to their immediate surroundings.
Individual sh species have their ideal
temperature range in which they will best
perform. Believe it or not some sadistic biologists
place sh in swim tunnels to measure swimming
performance at differing temperatures. These
studies indicate that largemouth bass swimming
performance (critical swimming speed)
increased from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius, but
at 35 degrees Celsius it dropped dramatically.
Critical swimming speed translates into a shs
ability to effectively feed and forage. In turn, a
sh that is not expending much energy by not
moving aggressively will not need to feed as
often. To further compound things, since a shs
internal temperature is the same as the water,
at low temperatures it will take longer for a sh
to digest food (how long does it take for food to
break down in a refrigerator versus sitting out
in the sun). So, at low temperatures and high
temperatures, sh aggressiveness will be reduced.
Under these extreme conditions, anglers will
have to really work to catch sh, as few sh will
be actively chasing forage.
There are many factors associated with sh
spawning besides temperature, but temperature
does play a deciding role in the stimulation
and success of spawning. In hatcheries and sh
farms sh are often enticed to spawn several
times a year by manipulating both temperature
and lighting conditions to basically compress
an entire year of seasons into a matter of just
a few months. Fish have optimal temperatures
in which they will spawn, and for our popular
sport sh we have here in East Texas they are:
largemouth bass (62-70o), crappie (60-66o),
catsh (70-80o), sunsh (70-80o). Fish eggs are
also extremely vulnerable to sudden changes
in water temperature. In addition, with most of
our popular sport sh, the male stays behind to
care for and guard the spawning bed. If water
temperatures change drastically before hatch,
males may abandon the spawning bed, which
results in nest failure.
Every year like clock work our phone at the
ofce begins ringing in the spring and again in
the early fall with people calling about sick sh
with sores. Most assume the worst (pollution
or poor water quality) and speculate that a
fair amount of sh will die. However, disease
organisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites) are
natural and always in the water. Just about
all of these disease organisms have their
ideal temperatures in which they can rapidly
multiply and become infectious. Most of the
viral and bacterial diseases that we deal with
here in East Texas are most prevalent at water
temperatures above 65o. We tend to get more
calls concerning sick sh in the spring because
this is a particularly stressful time for sh.
Spawning consumes energy reserves, and nesting
behavior of many species includes physical
contact resulting in open wounds susceptible to
infection. Fish get sick just like people get sick.
Most certainly, some disease outbreaks are worse
than others and can have devastating effects on
sh populations. For example, Sam Rayburn
experienced a largemouth bass die-off in 1998
due to largemouth bass virus, a disease that is
now widespread in numerous states.

concerning this article or have any other shery
questions please dont hesitate to contact me

Preserving your trophy
The rst time that I was told I would be competing in a
taxidermy contest, I was so excited!! I originally was going to
mount a squirrel. I even had it all skinned out and everything, but
then a family friend, Mr. Darrell Flurry brought us a bobcat that
he had found on the side of the road where he lives. I decided to do
that instead and anyways, there were already about 4 or 5 squirrels
already. I still have the squirrel in the freezer though. I plan to use
them another year.
So I got the bobcat skinned out and measured for the form we
had ordered. Then I eshed it out and that took about 2 hours.
Fleshing is a process where you get out all of the fat and leftover
meat. I then washed the bobcat and it looked like a real live
polecat! I started blow drying the hide and while I was drying it,
something amazing happened, when you stuck the blow dryer in
his mouth it looked like he was singing opera! Mrs. Michelle asked
me an odd question, What are you going to name it? I named
him Scratchy. Well after the opera was over, Mrs. Michelle told me
how to put the skin on the mount and when I pulled it down over
his face it looked like he had a hoodie on. After that I put the glue
on and the clay to ll the rough spots and then sewed him up. Now
it was time to clean Scratchy up. During the clean up job, I had to
clean glue off of the fur and eyes and repainted the eyelids, ears,
and the nose. When I nished that, I put Scratchy on a hickory log
and put moss and leaves and hickory nuts on it for the habitat and
then it was done!
So then we were headed off to the contest. It was originally at
SFA, but they changed it to Angelina College. There were a lot of
projects including deer skulls and antlers and even an otter skull.
My friend Wyatt entered a rattlesnake. We took a test and then we
each went in for a speech and then we had to wait for at least 2
to 3 hours for the judges to nish judging. When I went in I had
won 1st place in my division and got a gift card to Academy, I
was so happy! The best part happened when I got an award from
the Texas Taxidermy Association and I was so very happy! Now
Scratchy is sitting in my Poppas shop in Jasper, called Polaris
World, for the week and next week its going to be back at my
house. I even agreed to do my next project with my friend Wyatt.
We are going to do a duck. Well, thanks for reading this. Hope you
will be there next year!!

After twenty years of
owning and operating
Huxley Bay Marina,
restaurant, motel and
R.V Park, Bob and Stacey
Vandrovec announced
that the facilities are for
sale. They have closed the restaurant and motel until
further notice. If anyone is interested in the facility,
they can contact Bob or Stacey at 936.368.2752.
Huxley Bay Marina which is located in a deep water
protective cove and located next to the river channel
proper, is one of only a handful of marinas that are
able to access the lake during drought conditions.
This time of year we are throwing everything in our
tackle box and shing numerous patterns throughout
the day.
Early morning were working shallow water with
vegetation close to deep water. On the north end of
the lake during the drought, many of the shallow
humps and ridges became covered with buck brush
and willow trees. Now that the lake is up these ridges
are easily visible and subsequently hold a lot of sh.
Were throwing numerous lures included but not
limited to, top water plugs, frogs, buzz baits, spinner
baits, shallow diving crank baits, jigs and nesse
plastics. If the bite slows down were backing out to
deeper water and mainly throwing deep diving crank
baits and large ten to twelve inch plastics on Texas or
Carolina rigs. Well target numerous types of structure
and cover from main and secondary points dropping
into deep water. Creek and river channel ledges and
drops and deep water humps. Use your electronics to
locate the bait sh and the thermo cline. Many sh
will suspend just above the thermo cline, which is the
coolest portion of the water scale.
The White Bass will be moving all over the lake
this time of year chasing shad. Watch for schooling
sh along boat lanes, timber lines, main lake points
and ats close to the river channel. Keep a Rat-L-Trap,
shallow diving crank bait or top water plug handy
when they start schooling. When they go down, throw
a slab spoon or tail spinner.
Crappie are holding in 12 to 25 ft of water over and
in brush tops and main lake humps.
FISHING REPORTS/
BASS: Targeting both
shallow and deep
structures are the key
to staying on the sh
in July with some good
bass getting caught
on top water plus deep areas are producing as well.
On the top water scene, the low-light times seem to
be the most productive and the grassy points near
deeper water are where some of the better top water
action is occurring. Both popping type lures as
well as walking-the-dog presentations are seeing
action. I normally use the walking lures if there
is wave action and more of the popping lures when
the conditions are calmer. However, that is a general
statement and while shing is a science, it is not an
exact science.
If I am using a popping lure, I always want a
teaser tail attached on the rear treble hook. A Pro
Pop, Chug Bug and Yellow Magic all have these type
tails. On the walking baits, I use either a Frenzy
Walker (discontinued lure by Berkley) or the classic
Zara Spook. The Spook comes in several sizes and
usually I use the medium or large versions, which
allows great casting distances. Currently, the shad
patterns are working on both the popping as well as
the walking lures.
On the frog scene, if you havent tried Stanleys new
Ribbit family member the Ribbit Top Toad then you
are missing some big bass activity. These are hollow
bodied frogs that you can pause, twitch, walk the dog
or buzz and are made where they t hand n glove on
Stanleys 5/0 Double Take frog hook. This set-up has a
great ratio of strikes-to-catch plus each frog is usually
good for several sh before they tear up.
For mid-depth patterns (8 to 15) we are using
mid-diving crankbaits (Normans DLN/Deep Little N),
wacky worms, drop shot and light weighted Texas rigs.
For deeper structure (18 to 30) we are also using drop
shot, Carolina Rigs and DD22s which is a deep diving
crankbait. We caught a lot of bass in June working a
Berkley Havoc Bottom Hopper on a drop shot. Work it
slow...real slow.
CRAPPIE/BREAM/YELLOW BASS Crappie anglers
are catching them consistently on baited brush with
live shiners and Blakemores famous Road Runner
which is a small jig with a small spinner attached.
Most are shing 18 to 28 feet with some of the sweet
spots in 20-25 ft. Bream are still plentiful around
boat docks and on beds in 4 to 6 feet in coves. Dont
get too close to the beds and throw a live cricket or
earth worm into the bed with a light line and small
weight and cork. Yellow bass are more available in the
mouths of major creeks and love small crank baits,
tailspinners and small to medium size spoons.

BASS ~ Good! Start
early with a Ribbit
oating frog around
vegetation. For best
results use the Stanley
double hook. Fish the
frog on a TFO 73
med/heavy rod with a high speed reel spooled with
Fins PRT 40lb. braid. As the day warms up move
out to deep humps and points in 24-35 ft. of water
and sh the Strike King 6XD in Tennessee shad on a
TFO 76 med/light rod for maximum depth on the
crank bait. Pair this with 30lb. Fins windtamer on a
low speed reel like the Revo Winch. The other crank
bait of choice is the 10XD in blue/chartreuse. For this
bigger crank bait change to the TFO 79 medium
paired with the Revo Winch and Fins 30lb.windtamer.
The longer rods allow the crank bait to dive deeper
and puts less stress on the user. Night time bass are
excellent right now on Texas rigged 12 worms 1/2 oz.
or 3/4 oz. black emerald or black grape will produce
best. Fish these worms on a TFO 73 heavy or extra
heavy rod and Fins PRT braid in 65lb. test.
CRAPPIE ~ Fair. Best on shiners over brush in 15-
28 ft. of water. The best crappie shing is at night over
brush or around bridges.
CATFISH ~ Excellent over baited holes. Use sweet
feed or soured chicken scratch to bait with. In 18-40
ft. of water use Catsh Charlie and catch away!

Dyess & Crawford Wowed Everyone with
their creel at the BNB Toledo #1 Summer Series
By Paul Hayes Photos from this tournament are available for sale at www.TheLakecaster.com
June 23, 2013 - The rst tournament in the Toledo Bend Bass N
Bucks Summer Series got off to a great start with some very nice
sh being brought to the scales. Apparently the full moon had
the sh hungry as the weights showed a big increase over the last
tournament on Toledo Bend. Tournament Director Ed Richer was
happy to see the increased catches and weights brought in to the
scales. Under the improved format for Bass N Bucks tournaments a
check is given for every ve teams instead of every seven resulting
in increased payouts to more teams.
First place went to the team of Chad Dyess and Michael
Crawford with a great bag of sh weighing in at 31.25 lbs. but
after a penalty for one dead sh of .50 lb. their total was reduced
to 30.75lbs. Dyess said that they were shing in 15 to 22 foot of
water throwing V & M football jigs over bald humps. Crawford
commented that the water was very clear and they had their limit
by ten thirty when the weather started warming up. The V & M jigs
paired with an Okuma rod was the ticket to landing the big sh.
They took home $2500 for their winnings.
Second place was taken by the team of Shane Gibson and Jimmy
Johnson with a total weight of 30.14lbs. Using Power Tackle rods
they were throwing Texas rigged worms into the grass in 12 to
15 feet of water. A nice kicker sh of 7.06 lbs. helped anchor the
second place win of $1500 for the team. The anglers wanted to
thank Skeeter boats, Yamaha motors, Humminbird electronics and
Bernie Molina for their support.
Third place went to the team of Stephen Johnston and Trent
Holloway shing from a Ranger boat. Their total weight of
25.94lbs earned them a paycheck worth $1200 for the day. V & M
Texas rigged R-Ringer worms and the V & M jigs were the baits
needed to catch their sh in calm and clear water around 15 feet.
The team thanked Foster Fence, V & M baits, Cyclone, Lucas Oil,
Ranger Boats, Mercury, Humminbird Electronics, Minn Kota,
Needmore Tackle, Sunline and Talon shallow water anchors.
Big bass of the day went to Chad Dyess and his partner Michael
Crawford. It weighed 8.62 and earned them an extra $250 for the
day in addition to rst place.
Second big bass honors went to Bart Blakelock and partner
James Benedict for a sh weighing 8.58 and earning them $150 in
addition to the seventh place check of $400.
John Salamone of Farmers Insurance in Jasper presented
two checks in the amount of $200 to Todd Castledine & Brent
Broussard for being the top team that has their boat insured by
Foremost Insurance, a subsidiary of Farmers Insurance. John
also provided freshly grilled hot dogs and sausages with all the
trimmings and bottled water.
Anglers need to be aware that with summer here and the
temperature rising daily you must remain hydrated or risk
dehydration by moisture loss through the skin. Remember that
bottled water, occasional electrolyte drinks and sunscreen are your
main ingredients to remain safe on the water.
There were thirty six teams entered into the tournament and
91 sh totaling 367lbs were caught with 87 being released alive.
The average weight was 4.04lbs per sh. The tournament Director
Ed Richer extends his thanks rst to the anglers who participate
in the BNB series and to all of their sponsors. This tournament
was held out of Big Bass Marina managed by Gene Stovall. The
marina grocery store/restaurant carries a great line of foods, cold
drinks and shing tackle including V & M products. He was very
excited to announce that they would shortly be receiving some
brand new V & M jigs which are hand painted and have been tested
and proven by Pro angler Cliff Pace.
Bass N Bucks schedules and results can be accessed by going to
www.bassnbucks.com to view and enter. Anglers were reminded
that any team nishing in the top twenty ve of the Toledo
Bend Summer Series or who shes all three tournaments are
Chad Dyess and Michael Crawford came in 1st with
a great bag of sh weighing in at 30.75 lbs.
Shane Gibson and Jimmy Johnson came
in 2nd with a total weight of 30.14lbs.

GARDENERS WITH A MISSION
By John Smith, Jasper Master Gardener
Last summer, my wife and I took a mission trip with Hillcrest
Baptist Church of Jasper to Waynesville, North Carolina in the
middle of July, with the intent of leading VBS activities during
the mornings and a revival in the evenings; therefore, the church
was responsible for nding us volunteer opportunities to ll our
afternoons.
Mid-summer in North Carolina is much more pleasant than
Southeast Texas weather. The temperature was milder and the area
received rain showers on a regular basis.
The average age of the membership of the church was probably
60+. These folks really cared about their church members
especially for widows or those in poor health. Every day after VBS,
the church members served us a home cooked meal and we had
the most delicious corn on the cob with other fresh vegetables.
We immediately began to question them about where these fresh
vegetables came from.
We learned that a church member offered a vacant piece of
property, maybe 100 ft. square, that men in the church worked on
a daily basis. We got the opportunity to work in this garden and
see it for ourselves. It was just beautiful: good looking soil, crops
that were deep green in color, and they commented that they very
seldom had to water their crops because of frequent rain showers,
and they did not fertilize.
We helped them dig potatoes and pick snap beans. Their
potatoes were Yukon Gold and each plant was laden with potatoes;
the same was true with their beans. After we nished picking and
cleaning vegetables for the day, the men all began to pull lists out
of their pockets.
One said that he would deliver to Mrs. Jones, Mr. Smith, and
Mrs. White that day. Each one would call out who they were going
to deliver vegetables and they would separate the vegetables
according to need.
They invited us to ride along to deliver the vegetables. What a
pleasure it was to see joy on the faces as they received these fresh
vegetables. Thus, a light bulb went off in my head that we could
do that here in Jasper, so this was the beginning of the Hillcrest
Baptist Church Garden.
We were faced with many decisions on how to start a garden--
location, irrigation, quality of the soil, equipment required?
Our church owned ample property for a garden; however, we are
also blessed with many four-legged creatures that could destroy a
garden overnight. We have a nice deer herd around the church, so
unless we fenced it in and got water to the property, we were going
to have a difcult time getting a spring garden started.
Then, a couple in our church who also farm for a living, Dan
and Lindsay Williamson, volunteered their property for our rst
garden. Beyond providing land, they also provided equipment,
irrigation, and expertise for us to have our rst church garden.
Decision made! It is still my hope to one day to fence off a piece
of property and provide irrigation for a garden near the church,
but until that time, we will continue to garden at Third Day Farm
and Ranch In Peachtree.
When it was time to plant our spring garden, I had also begun
classes offered by the Jasper Master Gardeners. The material that
we were covered in class was very benecial in the choice of crops,
fertilization, and watering.
We also went to Dan and questioned him about our rst crops.
We decided to plant onions, squash, tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes,
and pinto beans. You may remember how many late frosts we got
this year. We wound up having to plant our pintos and tomatoes
twice due to late frosts.
Last month we harvested potatoes and onions, and now our
squash, zucchini and pinto beans are producing. All of our harvest
has gone to church members who are widowed or no longer
capable of gardening. When we have excess vegetables, we take
them to a local apartment complex where the residents are eager
to accept.
We also planted purple hull peas and had our rst experience
with sweet potato sprouts. According to our local county agent,
Chadd Caperton, sweet potatoes typically dont grow well in our
area because of weevils, but we are hoping to defy the odds.
(Note: sweet potatoes will grow in Jasper, but the presence
of weevils means that sweet potatoes need to be cooked soon
after harvest instead of stored for the long term. Also, we are
in a quarantine zone because of weevils, so sweet potatoes
grown in Jasper should not be shipped & sold outside the
quarantine area.)
Overall, the church gardening experience has been great
because you are helping others by providing nutritious food, and
it is a great source of relaxation and exercise. For any of you who
might be considering a community garden, my recommendation
would be to get a soil sample months ahead of the time so that you
can amend your soil deciencies before planting.
Then, make sure you have adequate irrigation for your crop.
A good resource for crops that do well in our area and the best
planting times would be County Agent Chadd Caperton. My last
recommendation would be to line up a list of volunteers who can
assist with planting, weeding, harvesting and distribution of the
fresh vegetables. It is certainly a wonderful way to bless others, and
you will be blessed in the process.

Texan Collins Keeps On Course To Victory
In B.A.S.S. Nation Divisional
Courtesy of www.Bassmaster.com
ZAVALLA, Texas The frog bite was on at
Sam Rayburn Reservoir but Texan Albert Collins
avoided that temptation and won the B.A.S.S.
Nation Central Divisional.
While runner-up Brandon Pedigo and other
contestants turned in double-digit sacks today by
shing plastic frogs in the shallow grass, Collins
stuck with an offshore summertime pattern
of targeting channel swings near points. He
brought a 17-pound, 4-ounce limit of ve bass to
the scales to clinch the victory. He noted the sh
were caught at various depths.
I was shing different areas of the lake,
said Collins, who nished with a three-day total
of 15 bass weighing 53-4. In some areas they
were in 6 to 8 feet and in some areas they were
in 18 to 20 feet.
My primary lure, the one I caught the most
sh on, was a Missile Baits Tomahawk worm [in
the Love Bug hue]. The 48-year-old plumber
from Nacogdoches, Texas, said he rigged the
worm Texas style with a 5/16-ounce lead weight
and a 5/0 Gamakatsu worm hook.
On the rst day, he tried to sh as many
different areas and types of habitat as he could
to accumulate a decent weight, which he
accomplished with a 16-12 limit to move into the
runner-up spot behind Pedigo.
The second day started slowly for Collins,
but he nished strong with the heaviest bag of
the tournament (19-4) and leapfrogged over
Pedigo to take over the lead. Collins won the
Livingston Lures award of $250 because he led
the tournament on Day 2.
The shing got tougher for Collins during
Fridays nal round, because he exhausted
several of his best spots in order to build such a
heavy stringer of bass on the second day.
It worked out well though, said the
Nacogdoches Bass Club member. I planned
everything out, and it worked.
Collins credits his partner in the draw
tournament, Kevin Johnston of Missouri, for
letting him call the shots in the nal round. He
let me position the boat to the point to where
I had a good advantage to throw at everything
without getting interfered with, he said.
By winning the divisional and nishing as the
top angler on his state team, Collins earned a
berth in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to be
held on Lake Dardanelle in Arkansas, Oct. 24-26.
Other state winners who qualied for the
National Championship were Doug Thompson of
Arkansas; Beau Branine, Kansas; Ryan Lavigne,
Louisiana; Randy Ladner, Mississippi; Brian
Wilson, Missouri; Nick Ash, Nebraska; and Pedigo
of Oklahoma.
Louisiana won the team championship for the
second straight year with 301 pounds, 12 ounces,
while the host Texas squad nished second with
280-15.
The Carhartt Big Bass Award of $500 was
presented to Destre Dedeaux of Mississippi for his
8-6 largemouth caught on Day 1.

Burgay & Hughes came out on top at the
BNB Rayburn #1 Summer Series
By Paul Hayes Photos from this tournament are available for sale at www.TheLakecaster.com
June 22, 2013 - The rst tourney of the Bass
N Bucks Sam Rayburn Summer Series was
held Saturday June 22 out of Walter Umphrey
Pavilion. The weather was very cooperative
for the anglers without too much interference
from the wind although it was hot. Tournament
director Ed Richer announced that instead of
paying one in seven the series is now paying one
in every ve team entries which means more
paychecks available. Any team which shes all
three of the summer series or nishes in the top
25 of any series will qualify for the six spring
championships. There will be one winning team
per tournament.
Stan Burgay and Lance Hughes put together a
winning stringer to nish in rst place bringing
ve sh weighing 23.87 lbs. to the scales. Their
kicker sh was a 6.48 pounder. According to
the team all of their sh but one came on frogs
shed shallow. Lance said they bit all day for
them and the light wind actually helped them
out. Stan caught the big bass on a Zara Spook
also shed shallow. The team expressed their
thanks to the Bass N Bucks tournament crew
for the opportunity to sh with them. They took
home a paycheck of $2600 for rst place.
Todd Castledine and Brent Broussard nailed
down second place with a good weight of
20.88lbs. Todd said most of their sh came early
in the day on Kicker Fish Tail Slapper shed
on a Carolina rig. Because of the great weather
they had their limit and were culling by ten
thirty. Brent wanted to thank Jesus Christ rst
and foremost for the opportunity to sh. He also
wishes to thank their sponsors Worm Hatch, a
new prototype not on the market yet, Kicker Fish,
Legend boats, Mercury, Power Pole, Combat Jigs,
Foremost Insurance and Home Town Tackle in
Center. Their winnings were $1600 for the day.
Third place went to Randy Millender and
Kenneth Nichols. DD 22s and Ole Monster Zoom
worms were their ticket to a paycheck shing
in 12 to 15 feet of water. Most of their shing
was done across bald humps where the bass are
ambushing schools of shad this time of year.
The team said they wished to give our Lord Jesus
Christ all the glory for their win. Third place paid
them $1200.
Big bass of the day was caught by Stan
Burgay on a Zara Spook in shallow water. The
sh weighed in at 6.48lbs and earned him an
additional $260 for the team.
Second big bass went to Stephen Johnston
with a 6.14lb sh that earned them an extra
$150 on top of the $500 for sixth place.
John Salamone of Farmers Insurance in
Jasper presented an award of two hundred
dollars each to tournament winners Stan Burgay
and Lance Hughes because they are insured by
Foremost Insurance, a subsidiary of Farmers.
John also provided hot dogs, links and bottled
water for the anglers and guests.
There were thirty seven teams entered into the
tournament and 114 sh were weighed in for
a total weight of 322 lbs. 108 sh were released
alive for a 95% ratio. Anglers need to be aware
that as the summer progresses the stress on the

OUTDOOR TALES
Marcus & Braden Norton along with friend Mike
Taylor and daughters, Emily & Abbie had an
awesome time on Rayburn catching crappie on
minnows that they got from Needmore Tackle.
Guide, Joe Dunn with Justin Hanzel & Luke Byley
with a nice bunch of crappie caught near Holly Park
Marina on Toledo Bend Ready to try your hand at trot lining? Nick & Cory
harvested this huge 65 lb catsh on Toledo Bend
Yeah, I sh like a girl!! says Gay Norton.
Charles Ford caught this big Flathead Catsh (Opp) on
a Bass Kandi Sweet Stick Worm (Straight Tail Worm)
Watermelon Candy/Red, Academy H2O Mettle Reel,
Castaway Skeleton Flipping rod, VICIOUS Fluorocarbon
15lb test, 5/0 Daiichi Fat Gap Bleeding Worm Hook.
We tried to call the sh hatchery to get some scales
large enough that were certied since the Bassmaster
Weekend Series Scales Overloaded at 50 lbs. We had
to go to the Jasper Meat Market to weigh it. It went 61
lbs!!! and took over 30 min to land. We were preshing
and caught this off a deep water brush pile at Farmers
Flats and the sh hit as the worm was falling and never
made it to the bottom. Must have hit it in the head the
rst 3 feet deep! LOL (Editors note: FYI - Brookeland
KOA certied scales can weigh sh or other catches in
excess of 200 pounds!)
Dylan and Darrell Lyons noodle the old fashioned way to
get these MONSTER catsh near Lowes Creek on Toledo
Bend. This big brute weighed well over 60 pounds!!! Fish
fry anyone?

Better management
through better record keeping
Many people have trouble remembering where they set their
keys, glasses, or other small items (including me). Many cant
remember what they did at this time last year. Record keeping is
one of the most crucial parts of any wildlife management plan
that is often neglected.
First, data should be collected in a format that is easy for the
user to access and use. This could be anything from writing it in a
notebook, entering it into a computer, or pieces of paper stuck in a
folder. The main thing is that the user can access the information
quickly and easily for use in future decisions. This is one of the
easiest things that can be done and have the greatest impact on
the success of the management.
Second, keep track of where you recorded the data. There are
many ways to accomplish this and is different for each person. The
main things to keep in mind are that all of the data is kept in one
place, it is safe (from being lost or destroyed), and can be easily
accessed when needed. If data is kept on the computer make sure
that a backup is made on a regular basis.
Third, include everything in the le. This should include things
such as harvest data, what was fed in feeders, what was planted
and when, when mowing was conducted, and everything else
that can be thought of. In addition, if any data is sent, loaned, or
given to anyone else a copy should be kept.
Fourth, use the data that was collected to inuence
management decisions. This means that the data collected in
the past should be analyzed and become the basis for future
decisions. This could be something simple such as what type
of crop worked well in a food plot in the past and what did not.
Decisions could be more complex such as how many bucks
and does need to be harvested too keep the population at the
correct ratio of does per buck. Entering the data into a computer
spreadsheet can aid in analysis of the data.
Record keeping can be one of the easiest things to do by writing
it down, or one of the hardest by keeping up with it. Whatever it
is to collect when managing wildlife it is one of the most crucial
parts. Data recorded serves as the basis for all management
decisions and the report card for the area. Basing decisions on fact
and not memory will improve effectiveness and speed at which the
goal for the area is reached. Taking an extra minute to record what
is happening now can save many hours down the line.

Line Choice is Critical
Courtesy of Yamaha Fishing Series
Observers wonder why tournament angler
Todd Faircloth often has three or four rods lying
on his boat deck, each rigged with the same lure,
but what they dont realize is that while the lures
are alike, the veteran Yamaha Pro has rigged
them with different types and weights of lines. As
bass begin moving deeper and tighter to summer
cover, Faircloth knows choosing the proper line
for the conditions hes shing can be critical to
his success.
Few issues today confuse bass shermen
more than line choices, says Faircloth,
especially since now we have to pick not only
the line weight but also the line type, too. Years
ago, all we had was monolament, but today we
also have braided and uorocarbon lines, and I
use all three types practically every day.
Each line has distinct characteristics, so over
the years Ive determined which lines I like best
for the types of shing I do. I spent a lot of time
on the water comparing lines, and I think its
something every serious bass sherman needs
to do.
Perhaps the hardest shing line decision
Faircloth made was to stop using monolament.
Hed been shing that line for more than two
decades, but now he uses mono only w3hen hes
making short casts to specic shallow targets like
docks and brush, or underneath overhanging
tree limbs and branches.
With that type of shing, I use a topwater
popping plug almost exclusively, the Yamaha
Pro continues, and because Im making short
casts in fairly open water and want a lot of lure
action, I tie the popper with a loop knot that
works best with monolament line. I also need
more stretch in the line to absorb my hook=-set
at close range, and 15 pound monolament
provides that better than uorocarbon or
braided line, neither of which have much stretch
at all.
While braided line does not stretch, it does
offer other advantages Faircloth likes when hes
ipping plastic worms and creature baits into
heavy vegetation. Braided lines are extremely
strong despite their small diameter, and will
literally cut through hyacinths and hydrilla if a
big bass runs after being hooked. Even though
he uses 50 pound test braid, the line is also very
sensitive so Faircloth feels strikes easier.
I also use braided line when Im shing
lipless crankbaits, because I can make longer
casts to cover more water, he adds, and since
this type of line has no stretch, I will usually get a
good hook-set even when a bass hits at the end of
one of those long casts.
I also like braided line with lipless crankbaits
because I normally sh them right over the
top of shallow vegetation, and if the lure gets
snagged, I can rip it free and just keep reeling.
I use 30 pound braid, too, so it isnt going to
break.
For essentially all his other types of shing,
including using jigs, deep diving crankbaits,
Texas and Carolina rigs, and even drop-shots,
the Yamaha Pro prefers uorocarbon line.
Fluorocarbon is extremely sensitive, has less
stretch than monolament, and is practically
invisible under water. Since uorocarbon also
sinks, crankbaits dive slightly deeper, and plastic
worms are easier to keep on the bottom.
This is when people see me with several
rods rigged with the same lure, laughs
Faircloth, because Im using different line
weights to determine which performs best for
that particular type of shing. Normally, I use
14 pound test uorocarbon most often, but in
deeper water with smaller lures and nesse style
presentation I will go as light as 6 pound line,
while in heavy cover I may use 25 pound line.
There is a lot of difference between 6, 8, and 10
pound uorocarbon line, so I rig them all to see
which I prefer under the conditions Im shing.
Fluorocarbon line had been in use in
saltwater shing for a number of years before it
was introduced in bass shing, concludes the
Yamaha Pro, and honestly, I was not impressed
with the rst uorocarbon lines I tried. Since
then, manufacturers have made a lot of
improvements in them, and today these lines are
a critical part of my shing.

YOU HAVE QUESTIONS. HERES THE ANSWER.
Dad wants to know if he can take it out to catch a mess of fish for supper. Mom asks if it is safe for the
whole family, including the children, to be in if the water gets rough. The kids wonder if its water sports capable
and can they tie a tube behind it? And, of course, your friends just want to know if theres enough room for them to
tag along with their gear sometime for a day of fun on the water. The 290 Sport responds to all those questions,
and more, with a resounding Yes!
Where me and my family like to boat, the water can easily turn rough really fast. We dont
worry though. We know we can take our 290 Sport out and sh and ski and play all day long,
and itll get us back smoothly and dryly, even when the conditions arent ideal.
