2013 Grade: 10th Level: B1 School: Liceul Teoretic Filipestii de Padure Unit 4: Make yourself at Home Time 50 min. LESSON AIMS: 1. to improve free developing of ideas on this topic; 2. to create an advanced conversational atmosphere in class, brainstorming , exchange of views on the same subject , also related to the previous unit lesson, Making a living(staying at home versus making a living) , the two types of environment , the working environment versus the private one , our private universe, the house . 3. to improve their grammar through exercises OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: -express their opinion regarding to the main topic of the lesson. - to describe different rooms looking at pictures. - to associate the style of the room with the personality of a person - to give contextual synonyms. Anticipated problems : Students must know all about the above mentioned topics . With teacher's help, they will link the ideas in a logical way, getting to know new things and having a general and particular conversation expressing varied points of view on this topic . SKILLS: reading, listening, speaking MATERIALS: textbook CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS: Whole class, Individual work, Pair work Activity 1: Warm-up Free conversation upon the saying My home is my castle . Since very ancient times, peoples private space has been a property in its own sense, a very personal one , a place for disputes , a place by which we can judge people differently from case to case, a place where we live, do our daily activities , rest, love, spend time with our family, organize meetings, gossip , hide ourselves from the others` eyes, relax, gather our energies . How much we love our homes? To what extent do our homes represent us?

Activity 2: Presentation (10 min.) Pupils give their personal opinions about their houses , about their own space . Where do they live ? Their homes, or their parents` house, how can they describe or classify them ? How do they judge their own private space? There are different types of houses , from modest ones to the most impressive buildings. Can pupils give examples of houses or of buildings as forms of housing ? Of original ones, like underground , as described in the coursebook fragment ? (Going underground) What about house interiors, can they describe that in a very original way? Also what about house facilities ?new words or expressions 3. Quotations that pupils know about houses , sayings or their own reflections . Which one do they agree with most? Discussions/debate 15 min II 1. If pupils could change three things about their home , what would they be? Pupil`s dreams about their own house , the dream house , the ideal one . The personal space versus the space at school or at their future/imagined job . Would they rather stay at home than going to school or to work? Different moods or feelings about the two types of environments 2. Short incursion into an imaginary job environment , an ideal job environment versus an ideal house . Also opinions in comparison with the outside world, their town/village, the town institutions or the entertainment places . How intimate does our home make us feel ? How unique or original? 10 min 3. Discussions upon the Going underground fragment .Reading in class of the encountered sections which have been ambiguous to the readers , if there were such sections. If not , trying to summarize what the fragment was about , by asking questions and by making recourse to other knowledge on the same topic . is the idea of underground house a special one? Why ? Kinds of intimate, cosy houses . 4. Comment upon the excerpt Mr Wemmick`s castle , from Charles Dickens`s Great Expectations . If the comprehension of the text has been harder for the pupils, due to the fact that they may not have read the novel, the teacher tells the main ideas to the class and tries to explain or challenges pupils to comment upon the topic -----English homes , or the house for an Englishman .Idioms or fixed phrases using the word home , expressions . 10 min III Exercises grammar : the use of tenses , Present Perfect Simple and Continuous , some revision of if clauses , all necessary when trying to express certain aspects during the communication. . Also checking up of adjectives or adverbs , word endings . Setting homework : Living above the shop , English in use , ex 10

Also as a homework, pupils have to conceive a letter about circumstances like renting a house, complaining about a house , or a letter about a house related exhibition, etc 10 min Written and oral class work contains : -vocabulary about houses or house universe, words , groups of words - expressions using home , sayings, pupils` own statements - describing the house, or the house objects , or house facilities , a room or objects in the house - note the use of tenses when telling about where we lived or where we presently live , own opinions or impressions - link to the excerpts used : Going underground and Mr Wemmick `s castle - short revision through the usage of some conditionals - hand-outs: fiche class work
