TREE NUT GROWERS SEE INCREASED YIELD AND VIGOR WITH MOVENTO

Nematodes reduce vigor and yield in tree nuts, on average causing 1520 percent damage, but sometimes as much as 50 percent. Bayer CropSciences Movento insecticide is unique in that it offers nematode management from a foliar application. There are limited effective management options for nematodes once perennial crops have been planted, and Movento provides a solution to tree nut growers. HOW MOVENTO WORKS Movento penetrates the leaf cuticle when sprayed onto the leaf surface, where it is fully mobile in the plant. It then moves with the sugars produced in the leaves to all parts of the plant and controls pests as they attempt to feed. Michael McKenry, a nematologist with the University of California, Riverside, Department of Nematology, began looking for alternatives to post-plant nematicides applied via drip in 2000. In 2006, McKenry began working with what is now Movento. Movento has the potential to cut damage in half, said McKenry. If an orchard has 20 percent damage and they can reduce nematode counts for a couple of years like that, the grower picks up that value by reducing nematode populations. McKenrys research has consistently found that Movento provides a 50 percent reduction in nematode populations for ve to six months. His research shows that the product upsets the ability of nematode populations to eventually reproduce, which causes the decline in nematode counts. McKenry highlighted the ability of Movento to reach all of the roots, not just those under the drip like previous products, as an advantage of the product. His research also showed that Movento is effective in controlling every different type of nematode, without harming bene cial bacterial agents in the soil that also feed on the nematodes.

Growers and researchers familiar with Movento have seen increases in both yields and vigor. The main difference McKenry noticed in Movento-treated plants was the quality of the fruit and the ability of the plant to develop enough root system in a hot spell. Rod Walker, an independent agriculture consultant in the California Central Valley, saw a visual difference in the vigor of his growers trees and the trees ability to hold a bigger crop. Movento really stood out during harvest a high-stress period when blocks usually get water stress. The trees did not water stress like they had in the past, said Walker. Trees treated the previous fall held the leaves better they just didnt stress, and that has to be attributed to better root vigor, Walker said. David Andrada, a Bayer CropScience technical sales consultant, has received similar comments from growers about Moventos ability to manage nematode populations and increase the vigor of treated trees. Visually, growers can see a difference where they put the Movento on the previous year, Andrada said. Theyre seeing better shoot growth and development the trees look a lot healthier and have better color the following spring. One grower Andrada met decided not to fumigate prior to planting, and he started seeing a lack of uniformity in growth and development of his walnut orchard. The growers consultant recommended Movento as the best option to treat his walnut orchard for nematode infestations since the trees were already established. When Andrada visited the orchard three years later, what he saw was better than what he expected. The trees treated with fall and spring applications of Movento were as full and developed as the trees without nematode damage, Andrada said. When I visited the orchard, the grower told me, Movento is really doing something! It is working on the nematodes.
