Quarterly Report

THIRD QUARTER FISCAL YEAR 2013

Making Great Strides With Diverse Community Partners

Since last fall, My New Red Shoes has been working diligently toward providing new shoes and clothing for 6,000 homeless and very low-income children during the 2013 back-to-school season. This seasons distribution of personalized gift bags to the children we serve will mark the following milestones: growing children served by 40% over last year, doubling our geographic reach by expanding to four additional Bay Area counties and serving more than 20,000 children since our founding in 2006. Our goal for growth this year was sparked by the opportunity to receive a matching grant of $150,000 from the Brin Wojcicki Foundation designed to help us reach 100% of identifiable children within our service population for 2013s back-to-school season. In addition to the dedicated donors who have participated in the matching challenge by making qualifying gifts, a broad spectrum of community partners has also provided critical support to ensure we have not just the funds to serve children, but also other necessary resources, including new shoes and the hand-sewn bags that package the gifts we give children. Through community-based shoe drives, we have collected over 1,300 pairs of new shoes through this quarter:

My New Red Shoes Social & Digital Media Plan

Last fall, a group of My New Red Shoes staff, Board members and volunteers worked as part of a task force to create a marketing and communications plan designed to leverage social and digital media in building awareness of and support for My New Red Shoes. Since implementing the plan earlier this year, we have grown our Facebook following to over 1,000 fans, increased subscribers to our e-newsletter by over 30%, established a presence on Pinterest and refined our web content to enhance its usefulness to our various audiences. Our next step will be to evaluate the effectiveness of media efforts by measuring the increased engagement of a community of diverse supporters.

This morning I chaperoned my daughter's 4th grade class [at My New Red Shoes]. My heart has been touched and it won't be our last visit for sure! The 2-hour [volunteer] experience, the life-lessons shared and the basic simplicity of the organization has touched me in a very realistic way. Your mission hits close to home because only God's grace is keeping my family from homelessness. - Feedback from a recent volunteer

Gap between wealthy and poor expands as Silicon Valley tech rebounds
This was a headline from a recent AP story published by the Washington post in March 2013. The article detailed disturbing realities about income disparities in the community we call home: for a family of four [in Silicon Valley], just covering basic needs like rent, food, childcare and transportation comes to almost $90,000 a year...Last year, the share of households earning less than $35,000 rose...to 20 percent. And, according to the article, homelessness in Silicon Valley rose by 20% over the last two years. This means there are more homeless and low-income children than ever in Silicon Valley and surrounding Bay Area communities. According to the institute for Children and Poverty, lack of adequate shoes and clothing is among the barriers to homeless children's school attendance, performance and full participation in after school activities. By addressing this barrier to school attendance and performance, My New Red Shoes works to ensure that all children, regardless of their families economic circumstances, can go to school feeling proud and ready to learn.
