A unit developed for children working at an Early Stage 1 level. This unit integrates the Quality Teaching Framework by identifying focus elements, Quality Learning Tools and the Teaching Measurement Framework.

Knowledge of ordering of shapes, D Bonos Six Thinking Hats, Thinkers Keys Ordering shapes by size. Create pictures using different sizes of the same stamp using the computer program KidPix.( or similar drawing program) MES1.2, WMES1.2, WMES1.3, WMES1.5 Deep Understanding, Higher Order Thinking, Metalanguage, Substantive Communication, Background Knowledge, Knowledge Integration, Engagement, High Expectations, Students Self Regulation

ACTIVITIES / LEARNING TOOLS STEP 1: Read a story e.g The Three Bears and Blackberries ( PM readers Level 6) that orders objects by size. Discuss the size of objects related to characters. STEP2: Order different sizes of the same picture. Reorganise pictures into groups - small, medium, large. STEP 3: Teacher demonstration of KidPix (using input from students) select a stamp and make it small, medium, large. Make a picture using drawing tools, small, medium large stamps. STEP 4: Students create their own pictures using different size stamps in the appropriate places. Pictures could be related to story. Print pictures. STEP 5. Students write a story about their picture to share with the class. At another time: Extension Thinkers Keys Reverse Key. Students create another picture using stamps but put inappropriate size objects for the characters to use. Orally retell the story. Use the Six Thinking Hats to discuss how the characters would feel using the inappropriate objects and what problems would they pose for them.

ASSESSMENT Observe: Can the students order and relate the size of objects to the characters? Can the students link this knowledge to the creation of pictures using KidPix? Can the students use higher order thinking skills to modify the picture and story?
