What is A.C. and What are the advantages of A.C. over D.C.?
A.C. means alternating current the current or voltage which alternates its direction and magnitude every time. Nowadays 95% of the total energy is produced, transmitted and distributed in A.C. supply. The reasons are the following: 1. More voltages can be generated than D.C ( upto 33,000 volts when D.C. 650 V only ). 2. A.C voltages can be increased and decreased with the help of static machine called the TRANSFORMER. 3. A.C. transmission and distribution is more economical, as line material (say copper) can be saved by transmitting power at higher voltage. 4. A.C. motors for the same horse power as of D.C. motors are cheaper, lighter in weight, require lesser space and require lesser attention in operation and maintenance. 5. A.C. can be converted to D.C. easily, when and where required but D.C. cannot be converted to A.C. so easily and it will not be economical.

What is D.C. and What are the advantages of D.C. over A.C.?
D.C. means Direct current, which does not change its direction and magnitude and is steady at all the times. The cells, accumulators and dynamos or Generator give pure D.C. Even we produce 95% of electrical energy as A.C., but we cannot forget the D.C. for its following merits: 1. D.C. series motors are most suitable for traction purposes in Tramway, Railways, cranes and lifts. 2. For Electroplating, Electrolutic and electrochemical processes (battery charging etc.,) D.C. is required. 3. Arc lamps for search lights and cinema projectors work on D.C. 4. Arc welding is better than on A.C. 5. Relay and operating time switches etc., and circuit breakers, D.C. works more efficiently. 6. In rolling mills, paper mills, colliery winding, etc., where fine speed control of speeds in both directions is required, D.C. motors are required.
