The children and staff at Chapelbreak Preschool were very sad and
disappointed on Monday morning when they came in to find all the plants they had planted the week before had been stolen. They had done a sponsored pedal push to raise money to buy plants to fill the new raised beds that had been fitted as part of the expansion of the outside play area.
THEFT From the Bowthorpe Community Garden On what we believe was the night of Wednesday 5th June 2 identical ornate wooden benches were stolen from the community garden on Tolye Road. They are approx. 6ft long, one has a light brown varnish finish and the other bare wood which is grey/white in colour. Anyone who may have witnessed their removal or has seen them could they please contact Adrian Judd 07765 350383 A generous reward is offered for information leading to their safe return.
> > > > BOARD Your chance to have your say on preserving Bowthorpes heritage
Local people have been involved in putting together an important council document which makes recommendations for ways to preserve and enhance Bowthorpes unique character. The draft Bowthorpe Conservation Area Appraisal will be open for consultation from Monday 1 July until Monday 29 July.
From Monday 1 July, for one week, there will be an exhibition in the foyer of Roys in the Bowthorpe shopping centre, which will then move to
City Hall on St Peters Street, where it will be displayed from Monday 8 until Friday 12 July. You will also be able to see the appraisal on the councils website www.norwich.gov.uk throughout July.

My team will be focused on patrolling the neighbourhood as the days lengthen. Crime continues to fall across Bowthorpe. But we often see a rise in the reporting of acts of anti-social behaviour during the summer months. People naturally spend more time in the parks and streets enjoying the warmer weather. This sometimes leads to reports of anti-social behaviour as high spirits create noise and nuisance for local residents. We are committed to reducing the acts of anti-social behaviour during the summer time. I am currently looking at several options to assist in the local policing efforts during the warmer nights. To achieve this I will need information from you. Please report for my attention all acts of anti-social behaviour on the estate. I need to know where and when the acts are happening. And I need to know who is doing them. The council take a strong lead in noise nuisance between neighbours. They have responsibility for monitoring unacceptable levels of noise from things like house parties. I will be working closely with the council and I would still ask that you make me aware of any neighbour concerns. I will also be working closely with the council to target the fly-tipping that openly affects part of our neighbourhood. Again, let me know if you have any information on who is littering on our streets or if there is an area that needs attention for cleaning. And finally I will be leading an operation to address concerns on road traffic offences in our neighbourhood; abuse of bus gates and speeding motorists. You have been warned. We are always keen to hear any ideas for how we can be making a positive difference to the community. Should you have information please contact us by dialling 101 or through crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Details of our latest community meetings can be found on the Constabulary website where you can look at the latest news in the community. Or please come along to the station and let me know what concerns or information you have for the estate. Pc 591 Andy Tomlinson

Simplicity isnt a word we hear much about these days, but when we do it is usually in connection with an interior design that looks simple but is probably expensive! Henry Thoreau, one of the great writers on simplicity, said that `a person is rich in proportion to the things they can leave alone. Simplicity is partly about choices. As we look at our lives, do we know how and why weve ended up living how were living? What choices have we made that control our lifestyle? When we wanted that new house or car were we aware that the trade -off would mean worker longer hours to pay for them and seeing less of the people we love? And so we find ourselves on the treadmill of life, paying for the choices we hardly knew wed even made. Jesus said, Seek first Gods kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). This is about getting our priorities right. When we do this, we experience true freedom. Simplicity is freedom, freedom from listening to the voices that tell us happiness is found in a job that commands more respect or in obtaining a bigger house, a better car, a more expensive luxury holiday, the latest fashion or the costliest jewellery, or in having a busy diary. Simplicity asks us to listen to the whisper of God that we seldom notice or have time to hear. Simplicity helps us discover that happiness comes not from having many things and plenty of money but from having the space for closeness in our friendships, space for ourselves and family, and primarily the space for God. NANSA (Norfolk and Norwich Scope) is a local independent charity offering a range of services, activities and support to Norfolk people with disabilities of all ages. Our adult centre is in Bowthorpe Road next to the Community Hospital. This summer we are planning to offer a bite size programme of taster sessions to enable our adult clients (18+) to have a go at things they have not tried before. I would like to offer some work taster or volunteering experience for a couple of hours to give our members the opportunity to help e.g. in a day centre, caf, activity, playgroup, community centre. We would love to hear from anyone who might be able to offer a couple of hours work experience (members would come in twos or threes supported by a member of staff). RAMADAN MESSAGE FROM THE NEESA PROJECT God willing the 9th July 2013 will see the start of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims all over the world. A month of fasting from dawn until dusk, prayers, good deeds and charity. I have chosen a quote from Ali Ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son -in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them). Ali was the first male to convert to Islam. If the whole world were to consider these words, what a peaceful place it would be. Hate no one, however much they have wronged you. Live humbly, no matter how wealthy you have become. Think positively, no matter how hard life is. Give much, even if you have been given little. Keep in touch with ones who may have forgotten you. Forgive who has wronged you and do not stop praying for the best for those you love I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Peaceful and successful Ramadan. May your fasting be easy and your good deeds many. The Neesa Project www.theneesaproject.co.uk
Thanks to Hajira Ben Moussa for sending this in.
From Mike Sands, City and County Councillor for Bowthorpe Dear Residents, The first weeks of County Council have been very eventful and have flown by with a number of changes occurring in County Hall which should result in greater democracy and better representation for residents, not just of Bowthorpe, but across the City and County. The conservative party lost overall control of County and there is now an administration based upon what has been described as a rainbow alliance. Your elected representatives working together to improve services. This needs to be tempered by the knowledge that County must deal with 65 million in cuts in funds from Westminster. This becomes a fine balancing act in looking at all aspects of expenditure and paring and making savings through efficiencies while reducing the impact on and effectiveness of services. 16
SHOE-MAKING CRAFTSMANSHIP ALIVE AND WELL IN THE HEART OF BOWTHORPE Paul Seaman started repairing shoes at the age of six-and-a-half and began full-time shoe-making with W.E.Smith & Son when he reached fifteen. Mr. Maurice Stone was Pauls mentor from the start, and continued to be so all his life, having passed away early this year. Twenty two years ago W.E.smith & Son moved from premises in Drayton Road into one of the units in Bowthorpe Craft Workshops , where Paul now has sole responsibility. His hand-made orthopaedic footwear is legendary, and customers cannot speak too highly of the personal service each receives.
Paul outside Unit 5A Bowthorpe Hall Rd. Bowthorpe Norwich NR5 9AA Tel. 01603 745005 The unit was formerly used as the birthing room for horses and cattle from Bowthorpe Hall. Saddles are still on the wall inside. For full report, including that in the EEN of 1965, see display in Roys as indicated on page 5, Preserving Bowthorpes Heritage. A key question remains: will anyone have the commitment and dedication to learn from Paul and carry on the work?
Bowthorpe continues to be a community in which acceptance of others and cohesion between groups is encouraged. Cllr Jo Story, Cllr Sue Sands (currently Sewell Ward) and I attended an event at Cloverhill Village Hall on Saturday (22 / 6). This was put on by a local organisation called Society Alive. Though organised and run by new arrivals to our community this was a multi cultural event designed to bring different cultures and communities together. It was very well attended and enjoyed by all. We were very well fed too, with some great cooking. As well as bringing communities together, an important aim of Society Alive is to foster an enjoyment of learning amongst our children and an aspiration to do well and to complete high school and to go on to higher education or university. With the current economic climate likely to continue, encouraging aspiration is likely to encourage local enterprise which is the way to build our community. Mike Sands 17

ASHWELL COURT
Hello again. Despite it being almost mid -summers day, I am writing this after battling through a hailstorm, coupled with the gale which we seem to have with us permanently these days. Lets hope by the time this is published and you read it, the weather will have decided to behave like mid summer and we can get out our bikinis, or at least our sun-dresses! At Ashwell Court we have had a range of activities all with refreshments efficiently and tastefully provided by Caroline and her helpers. We are so grateful to all of them for their hard work, particularly to Caroline for arranging all the entertainment. We are lucky, when the weather is so cold, to have these enjoyable evenings on our doorstep. Since the last issue of the Bowthorpe News we have enjoyed an evening of Hoy, with prizes and a Fish and Chip Supper. This was a very enjoyable event. At the beginning of June we had a Strawberry Tea followed by entertainment by Dick High and at the end of June there was another evening of entertainment with Tony Cann. Recently several of us from Ashwell Court have joined some excellent outings with our friends from Bradecroft, one to Bury St Edmunds and another to Lowestoft, visiting Highway Nurseries on the way home. As always these were lovely trips, with plenty of time to visit the various destinations and sample some nice afternoon teas! Hopefully we shall enjoy some hot summer weather before I next write. Best wishes to you all. Bye for now. Margaret

BRADECROFT
Hello Everyone, We have at last had a few nice summer days. It would have been better if the wind did not have that chill factor. On Wednesday May 22nd, together with our friends from Ashwell Court, we travelled on our planned trip to BURY ST EDMUNDS. It was market day, it was quite breezy and a bit chilly, but I think everyone enjoyed themselves by the look of the full shopping bags that came back on the coach with us. Our next trip is LOWESTOFT, which I will tell you about next time.. Friday 21st June was the longest day. I wonder if the summer weather will change. The evenings have not been light like it was other years, and I think its going to seem a long winter so best make the most of the sun when it shines. Well I have a sad ending to this months letter I'm afraid. Many of you that read these letters will remember Mr. and Mrs. Plummer (blind George and his wife) often seen on our shopping bus, and on our trips out, After his wife had her accident they had to leave here and go into care to be looked after. Sad to say George passed away in May, and his Funeral was on Thursday 30 May. God rest his soul, I do hear from Irene now and then. Well this is all for now , more next time.
Take care. Pat
Can my family say a BIG Thank You to Al and Donna Sharp for being True and Faithfull Friends. Also to say Thank You to them for being there for Alfie Newton (Bradecroft) who has been very ill and is still in hospital. Best Wishes Sylvia, John Ben and Beth Wesley 21

At Rest Think of me as one at rest, for me you should not weep I have no pain no troubled thoughts for I am just asleep The living thinking me that was, is now forever still And life goes on without me now, as time forever will.
If your heart is heavy now because I've gone away Dwell not long upon it friend For none of us can stay Those of you who liked me, I sincerely thank you all And those of you who loved me, I thank you most of all. And in my fleeting lifespan, as time went rushing by I found some time to hesitate, to laugh, to love, to cry Matters it now if time began If time will ever cease? I was here, I used it all, and now I am at peace.

Bowthorpe WI
On June 3rd the members of Bowthorpe WI had an exceptionally enjoyable evening. We celebrated our birthday with as many guests as we have members! We were entertained by Pam Warren and Friends who sang songs we all knew and loved and recited poems written for the occasion along with some other humerous verses. As if that was not enough we then had the most amazing food supplied by the WI members - pizzas, quiches, salads of all sort and the most wonderful cakes plus a huge birthday cake, again home made!
