What is a research Problem? A research problem is the situation that causes the researcher to feel apprehensive, confused and ill at ease. It is the demarcation of a problem area within a certain context involving the WHO or WHAT, the WHERE, the WHEN and the WHY of the problem situation. There are many problem situations that may give rise to research. Three sources usually contribute to problem identification. Own experience or the experience of others may be a source of problem supply. A second source could be scientific literature. You may read about certain findings and notice that a certain field was not covered. This could lead to a research problem. Theories could be a third source. Shortcomings in theories could be researched. Research can thus be aimed at clarifying or substantiating an existing theory, at clarifying contradictory findings, at correcting a faulty methodology, at correcting the inadequate or unsuitable use of statistical techniques, at reconciling conflicting opinions, or at solving existing practical problems A research problem is an issue or concern that the researcher presents and justifies in a research study. A problem that someone would like to research. Anything that a person find unsatisfactory or unsettling , a difficulty of some sort, a state of affairs that need to be changed . A problems involve areas of concerns to researchers, for condition they want to improve , difficulties they want to eliminate , questions for which they want to seek answers . Difference between Main and Sub problem The main problem is the aspect the researcher worries about, thinks about and wants to find a solution for. Sub problems are problems related to the main problem identified. Sub problems flow from the main problem and make up the main problem. It is the means to reach the set goal in a manageable way and contribute to solving the problem. Importance of Research Problem Your research problem is one of the most critical part of your research -- it defines the whole process, it guides your arguments and inquiry, and it provokes the interests of the reviewer. If your question does not work well, no matter how strong the rest of the research, the endeavor is unlikely to be successful. A research problem should be worth investigating. It should be worth any time, money, and effort used to find the answers. Just because one person feels the need to have a question answered, it does not mean that it is worth investigating. Instead the answers to the research problem should make some advances in the field of study.
