- The advantages:
1- They need little fuel to produce enormous amounts of power .
2- They dont pollute the air .
- The disadvantages:
- Their dangers are so great and the cost of building them so high .
- One accident in a single nuclear power station spread as much radio activity as a thousand
Hiroshima atom bombs.

SUMMARY
Some people invest their money by keeping it in a bank. Left in a bank, it will keep its
value, however high the interest rate. Some buy and sell on the Stock Market to invest their
money but only rich or brave people dare to do so. It's no good putting it in a tin under the
bed.
Wise investment is the art of making your money with the passing of time. One of the
best ways to protect your savings and increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from
the past.
The planet Earth is ruled by the clock without whose permission men can do nothing.
Everywhere men go, they are under its control. Whether or not we are slaves of time today
depends on our culture and personality.
Many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time. Certain slaves were clever at
measuring the time of day according to the beating of their hearts. They stood in a fixed
place and every hour would shout out the time. They were human time.
Men learned to use the shadow cast by the sun and invented the sundial. They also
invented water clocks.
These clocks were passed down through the family and so were always thought of as
grandfather clock . These grandfather clocks were very expensive as they were

4
made from fine woods, beautifully carved or inlaid with ivory. In order that one may make
future profit, one should invest one's money in antique clocks. The lantern clocks were the
grandfathers of the clock family. The chiming clock dates from the eighteenth century.
When Pitt, the British Prime Minister, put a tax on clocks in 1797 people stopped buying
domestic clocks. They relied on large wall clocks hung in public places for all to see.
Watches were first invented in Italy. The first wristwatch was made for Queen Elizabeth I
by the royal clock-maker.
Small clocks were also made and were mass produced. The nineteenth century witnessed
the invention of carriage clocks, small clocks made to be carried around with a traveller. By
the end of the nineteenth century the carriage clocks were popular through Europe as they
were considered ideal gifts for weddings and retirements.
Questions and answers:
1- What does the title " There's money in time" signif y ?
It signifies that the older the things are, the more valuable and precious they become. It

One of the best ways of investment is buying beautiful things from the past and antiques
such as Persian rugs, furniture, silver and clocks.

investing money in the stock market is risky.
4- What were the first methods of measuring time in the past ?
At first, certain men were very clever at measuring the time of day according to the
beating of their own hearts .Standing in a fixed place, they used to shout out the time every
hour. Then man could tell the time by using the shadows cost by the sun. He invented the
sundial. People also marked the hours on candles and used sand in hour-glasses. Water
clocks were invented.

for her Maj esty's Government

proper tax by putting too low a value on his goods.

DOES YOUR FUTURE LIFE LIE IN THE STARS?
MAIN POINTS
Astronomy is a fascinating study and the more perfect and more powerful telescopes
are, the more fascinating astronomy will be. Beside other things, astronomy is concerned
with why stars exist and the space between them. An astronomer needs a high level of
ability and interest in physics and mathematics.
Graduates who have specialised in astronomy can find careers in the photographic,
aerospace computer industries.
The observer or optical astronomer uses telescopes, but the theorist uses computers.
Britain has produced excellent theoretical astronomy, but optical astronomy has been held

8
back by some poor equipment. There will be specialists in the mathematical side and in the
techniques of observation.
A career in astronomy could be very exciting in the future because of the new advanced
telescopes.
Pulsars are regular radio pulses. ~'---- Professor Hewish and J acolin Bill picked up
about a dozen regular radio pulses. Hewish designed and built a new radio telescope,
A successful astronomer must possess patience, imagination and the ability to attend to
details and a firm theoretical understanding of his subject. He has to work continuously in
the bitter cold because some plates need changing every three minutes, so there is no
chance of a break. The telescope lens may mist Up and spoil the photographic plates.
An optical astronomer can watch stars only at night. Ann Savage got into her arctic suit,
opened the dome to the sky, positioned the telescope and worked out her programme do-
ing night-to-night duty.
No one is quite sure what they are. Quasars have a star-like appearance. They change
their light-output in a puzzling unstarlike way.
: Questions and answers
1- What careers can graduates who have specialized in astronomy find ?
They can find careers in the photographic, aerospace and computer industries, as well
as in pure astronomy.
2- What two kinds of astronomers are there ?
There are two kinds of astronomers . The observer or optical astronomer, that is the
person who is using telescopes and related equipment and the theorist, whose main
instrument is the computer.
3- Why wasn't optical astronomy so developed in Britain?
Optical astronomy wasn't so developed in Britain, because of relatively poor equipment.
4- What did Miss Bell notice in August ?
She noticed an incoming radio signal which appeared at an odd time and lasted only
about half as long as the signals from the radio stars under observation.
5- Why was professor Hewish awarded the Nobel prize for Physics?
He was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics for his discovery of pulsars.
6- What are the qualities of a successful astronomer ?
A successful astronomer must possess patience, imagination and the ability to attend to
detail as well as a firm theoretical understanding of his subject.
7- Why hasn't the Royal Greenwich Observatory been bui lt in Greenwich ?
It has not been built in Greenwich because the street lights there are too bright and
atmosphere too dirty.
8- Why has the temperature inside the dome to be the same as outside ?
The temperature inside the dome has to be the same as outside because, otherwise the
telescope lens would mist up and spoil the photographic plates.
9- Why is watching the stars in an observatory demanding?
Watching the stars in an observatory is demanding because the night-to-night duties can
be hard and cheerless.
