Fellow citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, who am I called upon to speak here today?

What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? And am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us? For the present, it is enough to affirm the equal manhood of the Negro race. Is it not as astonishing that, while we are plowing, planting, and reaping, using all kinds of mechanical tools, erecting houses, constructing bridges, building ships, working in metals of brass, iron, copper, and secretaries, having among us lawyers doctors, ministers, poets, authors, editors, orators, and teachers; and that, while we are engaged in all manner of enterprises common to other men, digging gold in California, capturing the whale in the Pacific, feeding sheep and cattle on the hillside, living, moving, acting, thinking, planning, living in families as husbands, wives, and children, and above all, confessing and worshiping the Christian's God, and looking hopefully for life and immortality beyond the grave, we are called upon to prove that we are men! . . . What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass-fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy-a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States at this very hour. Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotismsof the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse, and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival.
Excerpts from Frederick Douglass Independence Day Speech at Rochester, 1841

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms Hell take and shield you; You will find a solace there.

Confession of Sins

Verse 1

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You. Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You. Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives. We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed even our own Black brothers and sisters! Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore. ****** To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

Stewardship Tithing Litany

Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Together: Tithing is the biblical principle of returning 10% to God first. The earth is the Lords, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Debt is a spiritual issue. We are robbing Gods people when we live beyond our means, refuse to budget, invest, save, and tithe; we are seduced by debt. The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is Mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. Tithing, budgeting, and stewardship are the solutions to the spiritual problem of debt. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. Debt is fed by the desire for immediate gratification, poor planning, and the need to keep up appearances. His master replied, Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your masters happiness! Tithing, saving, budgeting, and good stewardship of resources is the calling of all Christians. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Debt slavery has been used since 1863 to prevent people of African descent from gaining power and independence. Share with the Lords people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Our ancestors were forced into slavery. Today, we volunteer to be enslaved by debt and we mortgage our childrens future.

O God, we have been called to be a debt-free congregation. We are called to teach our community, children, and grandchildren the discipline of tithing, the power of budgeting, the blessing of saving, and the benefit of investing. We desire to live debt-free because it honors God and our ancestors, who died not for debt, but that we may live free with our God. Amen.
