Aim : To study the effect of different volume of water on the rate of dissolving.

Problem statement : How does the volume of water effect solubility? Hypothesis : When the volume of water., the time taken to dissolve the salt .will be Variables : a) Manipulated variables: ....................... b) Responding variables:. c) Constant variables : .,. Apparatus :Electronic balance, 250ml beaker, stopwatch, measuring cylinder, glass rod Materials : Salt,80ml distilled water Procedure : A. B.

C.

D.

1.

Beaker A was filled with 50ml of water, beaker B was filled with 100ml of water, beaker C was filled with 150ml of water and beaker D was filled with 200ml of water. Water is left at room temperature. 10g of salt is weighted with electronic balance and added to each beaker.

2. 3.

4. 5.

The solution in each beaker is stirred at the same rate until all the salt dissolved completely. Time taken for salt to dissolve completely was recorded for each beaker.

Observation : Beak er A B C D Volume of water(ml) 50 100 150 200 Time taken to dissolve the salt completely(s) 51 42 37 34

Based on the data collected, draw a graph to show the effect of different volume of water on the time taken to dissolve the salt completely. Discussion and analysis: 1. From your observation, can salt grains be seen after all salt is completely dissolved in water? The salt grains cannot be seen when all salt is completely dissolved in water

2.

Which volume of water dissolves the salt; i. ii. fastest 200ml of water in Beaker D is the fastest dissolves the salt. slowest

3. Salt dissolves in water, what is the solute and solvent. Complete the word equation to represent the formation of salt solution.

4. State the relationship between the volume of water and the time taken to dissolve the salt completely in water. ... ...................... .......................................

5. Based on table of results; a) Define operationally rate of dissolving ? Rate of dissolving is. b) What will happen to the time taken to dissolve salt when more than 200ml of water is used? The time taken to dissolve the salt is less than...........

c) Based on the graph, predict the time taken to dissolve salt if 175ml of water is used? ............................................................................................................. ...

Conclusion : .......................................................................................................................... .... Hypothesis is accepted.
