Introduction
VISIT US on www.infineon.com whenever you need best in class active power switches. Electrical drive systems play a key role in energy savings. They account for two-thirds of electrical energy consumed in industry and they are a central component of automation systems. There are two distinct groups in the industrial drive technology. The first group includes electrically driven machines requiring position control. This group includes, for example, machine tools, measuring machines and packaging machines where precision in movement is required. The second group covers all applications where a fluid is moved by pumps and fans. Here variable speed drives allow adjusting the flow to the needs of the process. Compared to classic methods of flow control like throttling and bypassing, electronic speed control significantly increases the overall efficiency. Furthermore the use of an inverter enables the application of more efficient motor technology like permanent magnet synchronous motors and reluctance motors. Today such kind of drives can be implemented in a power range from Watts up to Megawatts. Nearly all static converters for electrical drives used today employ a combination of Input rectifier, DC-link and Output inverter. If no regeneration system is required for the electrical drive, the most competitive semiconductor components for the input rectifier are bipolar thyristors and/or diodes offered in various topologies, such as complete six pack modules, half bridge modules or single modules. In high power electrical drives the input rectifier consists of thyristors and/or diodes in press pack housings. If regeneration is required, an active front end can be designed using IGBT modules. In low power range, where power factor correction is mandatory in some applications, PFC (Power factor correction) circuits can be designed using disccrete IGBTs and diodes or dedicated modules.

High efficiency for comfortable quietness RC-Drives IGBT technology has been developed by Infineon as a cost optimized solution for sensitive consumer drives market. This basic technology provides outstanding performance for permanent magnet synchronous and brushless DC motor drives. A new version of the RC-Drives Fast IGBT was developed specifically for low power motor drive consumer market: the IGBT and diode losses are optimized to reduce the inverter losses at switching frequencies of 18~30 kHz. RC-Drives Fast enables high efficiency designs for inverters above 16 kHz to reduce the audible noise to absolutely silent level. The world famous TRENCHSTOP technology reduces saturation voltages to intrinsically very low level, well below the values offered by competing standard NPT IGBTs. The technology progress lowers down the voltage drop of IGBT chip giving higher device efficiency, whilst Infineons HighSpeed 3 family provides the best compromise between switching and conduction losses
Motivation and needs of Variable Frequency Drives: Control ability: Speed and Torque control Jolt free in start and stop Avoiding repetitive start/stop in pumps/compressors/valves Reducing consumption Increasing Efficiency Energy saving
Benefits Excellent cost/ performance for hard switching applications Outstanding temperature stability Very good EMI behavior Up to 60% space saving on the PCB Higher lifetime due to monolithically integrated IGBT & diode leading to reduced power cycling stress

MIPAQ
MIPAQ is a functional product family that is dedicated to useful integration of electronics into power modules. The MIPAQ family was developed in order to offer Modules Integrating Power, Application and Quality. It is a functional product family within Infineons IGBT modules portfolio. The combination of an IGBT module and the integration of sensing and driving electronics is an optimized solution for mastering the challenge of designing powerful and compact inverters for low and medium power. These products reduce costs, contribute to energy savings, improve profitability, and protect our environment at the same time. The MIPAQ family includes three products that offer significant board space savings along with reduced development times and costs:
MIPAQ base MIPAQ sense MIPAQ serve The MIPAQ base module features integrated shunts, while the MIPAQ sense module offers fully digital current measurements with galvanically isolated output signals. The MIPAQ serve module includes driver electronics and a digital temperature measurement, both with galvanic isolation.
