The Balloonists Prayer

May the winds welcome you with softness. May the sun bless you with his warm hands. May you fly so high and so well that God joins you in laughter and sets you gently back into the loving arms of Mother Earth. The author of the Balloonists Prayer is unknown, but it is believed to have been adapted from an old Irish sailors prayer from long ago. This prayer is commonly heard before a balloon flight.

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS THE DOCUMENT SAFE We keep important documents in a fireproof and waterproof safe at home. We keep the key in the lock or attached to the box if it doesnt stay in the lock by itself. That way, if we are ever burglarized, the burglar can open the box to see that there is nothing of value to him or her, or if there are valuables stored within, they can easily take those and leave the important documents behind. If there is no key immediately available to the thief, they would likely take off with the whole thing to break it open later and we would be without our documents. -L. PRICING GARAGE SALE ITEMS When pricing garage sale items, the first thing you need to decide is whether you are selling items to make money or if you are hoping to get others to pay you something to cart off stuff you dont want anymore. If the former, you should visit local thrift shops and antique shops to see what they are asking for similar items. This will give you an idea of the value of your items, but be prepared to carry most of your stuff back into the garage at the end of the day. Note that most shops dont sell out in a day. If the latter, which is the reason for my sales, I price items at what I would want to pay for them if I were considering purchasing them at a garage sale. Since I am an avid bargain-hunter, this means that I price my items considerably below their market value. -Patti

Do you know someone who grumbles? There once was a farmer who was an incurable grumbler. Hiram grumbled about everything all the time. He was never satisfied. One fall, he had the best apple crop for miles around. The apples were plentiful. There was a bumper crop. And there were hardly any bugs on them. You just couldnt ask for a better crop than the one Hiram had that year. Well, one of his neighbors stopped by to congratulate him, saying, Well, Hiram, you sure ought to be happy now. This is the finest crop of apples ever raised in this country. Hiram shuffled his feet, grunted and then grumbled, Well I spose theyll do. But wheres the rotten ones for the hogs? Some of us just have to grumble no matter how great things are around us, dont we? So I guess working positive isnt a matter of how great business is, but how we choose to react to it -- grumbling or grateful. As you Work Positive today, avoid grumbling line an Eeyore Vampire. Instead remember you receive your Work Positive lifestyle and say, Thank you.

few plants which grow well in total shade and many of them need filtered sunshine in the middle of the day. Herbs do need protection from cold winds, which often do more damage to a plant than low temperatures. A wall, hedge or natural slope can provide good shelter but if these are not available then a fence or screen can be used to provide protection and ensure good sturdy growth. Physical location is very important when growing herbs outside, make sure to plant them nearby, so you have easy access during cooking. Herbs are undemanding and extremely adaptable to their surroundings. They can grow in garden borders in existing gardens or mixed in to flower and vegetable beds. Being adaptable, they also grow well in hanging baskets or decorative pots on a balcony, patio, window box or even indoors. An easy way to begin would be to choose those herbs that you are already familiar with or enjoy using while cooking. Some ideas might be: Herbaceous Border Plants: Parsley, coriander (cilantro), marigold, marjoram or oregano, lemon thyme, sage, lavender, rosemary and savory make good herbaceous border plants. Any herb can easily be mixed in with your flower or vegetable garden. Hanging Baskets: A hanging basket of herbs can be very attractive and useful. A basket can generally hold 3 or 4 herbs and some good choices are marjoram, thyme and sage which once established will trail downwards. Decorative Containers: Decorative pots can be used for those herbs most often needed for cutting and easily kept close by the kitchen door. A mixture of annuals and perennials could include parsley, chives, dill, basil, summer savory, sage, lavender, rosemary and thyme. A sweet bay or bay laurel tree, which is very slow growing, is an ideal plant for a container and even indoor growing. Any of the mint family, apple mint, peppermint, spearmint, etc. do very well in containers since it keeps them confined to one area rather than spreading everywhere with their underground runners. Window Boxes: Herbs grow well in window boxes too, provided they get at least 4 or 5 hours of sunshine a day. A variety of cooking herbs makes a wonderful arrangement. Alternatively, filling the window box with fragrant herbs to scent the room when the window is open makes another nice arrangement. Some fragrant herbs to use could be sage, lemon thyme, lemon verbena, sweet marjoram and rosemary.

One of my favorite things to grow is herbs because they offer a combination of beauty and usefulness and can virtually be grown anywhere with ease. A very small amount of effort is soon rewarded with aromatic foliage and flowers. Even if you have never felt the urge to grow plants, they are the perfect introduction to gardening. Herbs have been used for food and medicine for over 5000 years. The earliest written records date from 3000 B.C. in Babylonian clay tablets. Ancient written records have been found all around the world from China, India, Assyria, Egypt, Greece and Romans. They have been used in ancient native cultures also like the Mayans and Native Americans. Now, we find a renewed interest in the use of herbs in various culinary fashions such as cooking, teas, liquors, and in medicines, aromatherapy, cosmetics, perfumes, dyes, cleaning agents, decoration and potpourri. There are several factors to be considered when deciding where it is best to grow herbs. Most herbs like other plants require sunshine during the growing season to produce their full flavor and fragrance. A plant requiring full sun should get about 7 hours of sunshine a day; while a plant requiring partial shade needs up to 4 hours of sunshine a day. There are

Indoors: Most herbs will grow well indoors with some care and attention. They need sun (and sometimes additional artificial light), water and ventilation. It is very handy to have cooking herbs in a box on the kitchen window sill. The more fragrant herbs such as rosemary and lemon verbena would give a lovely scent in the living room. There are so many herbs to choose from the choices can seem overwhelming, but I encourage you to begin with just one. Many times you can find some in the produce department at the grocery store. Nothing is finer than some fresh basil, parsley or chive to toss in scrambled eggs or a salad for a super fresh taste. Plucking a lavender leaf and inhaling its scent can be instantly calming on even the most stressful days. A couple mint leaves torn into a tall glass of ice water is so refreshing on a hot summers day. For centuries, herbs have been regarded as essential to daily life. May they continue to enliven and benefit yours! fb

SOUTHEAST REGION APPROVED FOR NEW HEADQUARTERS Larger facility among several land deals OKd by the board. The Pennsylvania Game Commissions Southeast Region Office could soon be moving into a larger building, following a vote today by the Board of Game Commissioners. The 24,168-square-foot building at 253 Snyder Road in Maidencreek Township, Berks County, is more than three times as large as the Southeast Regions existing office, which is at 448 Snyder Road. The existing facility, which is in Ontelaunee Township, near Reading, would be given up as part of the new facilitys purchase. The Game Commission also would pay $1.35 million as part of the exchange. That sum would come from thirdparty commitments for compensation of habitat and recreational losses that occurred on state game lands from previously approved projects. The Board of Game Commissioners approved the deal, noting the need for more office and storage space at the regional headquarters. Settlement is to be held on or before Aug. 15. Land acquisitions totaling more than 700 acres also were approved by the board. Among the acquisitions are: Two tracts totaling more than 285 acres adjacent to State Game Lands 322 in Oneida Township, Huntingdon County. The tracts were purchased at public auction May 4 after the Board of Game Commissioners in April authorized the bidding. The $1,013,454 purchase is to be paid with escrowed funds from a prior land exchange on State Game Lands 176 in Centre County. The new properties would provide critical access to State Game Lands 322 from Cold Springs Road. The property also includes portions of Standing Stone Creek, a trout-stocked fishery and diverse wetlands complex. Theres a historically significant warm spring on the property that maintains a temperature of about 63 degrees. The parcel is mostly forested with mixed oaks, hickory and white pine. A 209-acre tract in Wayne Township, Lawrence County, near State Game Lands 148. The property was offered by the Pennsylvania Coal Co. LLC at no cost as mitigation for mining impacts on Indiana bats. Approximately 100 acres of the property are forested with mixed hardwoods, and there are

DOE LICENSES TO GO ON SALE MONDAY Applying early boosts chances for hunters seeking antlerless tags. HARRISBURG- Pennsylvania deer hunters who want to better their chances of obtaining an antlerless license will want to send in applications during the first round of sales set to kick off on Mon., July 8. During the first three weeks applications are accepted, only Pennsylvania residents may apply. Nonresidents may apply beginning Monday, July 29. Then beginning on Monday, Aug. 5, residents and nonresidents alike may apply for any unsold licenses that remain. The second round of unsold license sales is set to begin on Monday, Aug. 19. Applications received before the Monday start of any round will be returned to sender. While applications wont be accepted before a given sales period begins, Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe said its a good idea for hunters to send in their applications as early as theyre permitted. The number of tags allocated for each wildlife-management unit is different, and in some units, licenses traditionally have sold out fairly quickly, Roe said. The sooner you send your application in, the better your chance of coming away with a license in the management unit thats your top choice. Hunters applying for 2013-14 antlerless deer licenses will follow the same process that has been in place during recent years. License fees also remain unchanged. Antlerless deer license applications must be mailed directly to a county treasurers office, w/the exception of the Philadelphia and Lehigh county treasurer offices, which no longer issue antlerless deer licenses. Treasurers across the state will accept applications for antlerless licenses covering any wildlife-management unit (WMU), but hunters should note that only county treasurers issue tags. The Pennsylvania Game Commission does not accept applications. A list of participating treasurers and their mailing addresses, as well as the number of licenses allocated for each WMU, appear in the 2013-14 Hunting & Trapping Digest, which hunters can pick up from a licensing agent.

Applications must be mailed in the official pink envelope issued to hunters at the time they purchase their general hunting licenses. Hunters who are Pennsylvania residents need to submit with each application a check or money order to cover the $6.70 license fee. The license fee for nonresidents is $26.70. If an application is rejected due to licenses being sold out, the uncashed check or money order will be returned to the hunter by mail. For most management units, hunters may apply for only one license in each round. However, hunters are allowed during each round to select their top three WMU preferences. If antlerless licenses are sold out for the WMU that is the hunters top choice, for example, a license for the second choice will be issued if available. Applications from up to three separate hunters may be submitted in the same envelope. If the WMU preferences for all applications mailed in the same envelope are exactly the same, payment may be made with a single check or money order. If the applicants have different WMU preferences, payment by separate checks or money orders is strongly recommended. Applying early during the first round of sales also helps to ensure hunters will get their antlerless licenses by the start of archery season. Archery season begins Sept. 21 in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D. Statewide, the season begins Oct. 5. A hunter, except for in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D, can purchase no more than three antlerless licenses - including unsold licenses - per license year. In WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D, there is no antlerless license limit for hunters, and beginning Aug. 5 in these three WMUs, hunters can apply for up to three licenses per mailing until the allocation is exhausted. Antlerless licenses for WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D also are sold over the counter beginning Aug. 26. Over-the-counter sales for licenses covering other WMUs begin Oct. 7. Hunters may apply over the counter to county treasurers for any other WMU with antlerless licenses remaining. A listing of antlerless licenses allocated by WMU, as well as the remaining allocation, can be viewed on the Game Commissions website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), by clicking on Doe License Update in the Quick Clicks box in the right-hand column of the homepage. f
