1. The Division Health and Nutrition personnel headed by a) Mrs. Angelina C.
Pascual b) :Nus. Maria Teresa S. Indap c) Dr. Armando N. Romero d) Mrs. Angelita
A. Abella will monitor all school canteens to oversee compliance of the following
orders:
)- DepEd Order No.8, s. 2007 - "Revised Implementing Guidelines on the
Operation and Management of School Canteens in Public Elementary and
Secondary Schools".
? DepEd Order No. 14, s. 2005 - "Instructions to Ensure Consumption of
Nutritious and Safe Food in School",
)- DepEd Order No. 52, s. 2008 - "Compliance to Policies on Food Safety in
School".
2. Regional Health and Nutrition Task Force shall also visit the school canteens
anytime this month to monitor compliance to existing DepEd issuances.
3. Immediate and wide dissemination of this Memorandum is desired.

. The recent food borne illnesses in Tuguegarao City resulting to fatality of two (2) pupils and
incident in Makati City were hard lessons learned and a reminder of our role in protecting the
and saiety of the school children. In lieu of these incidents; the Regional Health and Nutrition

Only nutrient-rich foods such as root crops. rice and "om products in native fruits
and vegetable in season, and fortified food products labeled rich in protein, energy, vitamins,
and minerals shall be sold L'l the school canteen. Beverages shall include milk, sbakes
jui.ces prepared from fruit.s and vegetables in season. Candies, chocolates, chips and the like.
are not encouraged to be sold in school canteens.
lilt The sale of carbonated drinks, sugar-based synthetic or artificially flavored junk foods
and any food product that may be detrimental to the child's health and that do not bear the

Buy food only from reputable sources (to make sure that your foods are of good quality; for
meat - that it is not double dead).
Observe proper storage, cooking and handling of foods As much as possible. prepare the foods
on the day it will be served. .
Non-food items should not be stored with the food items so they will not be m.istaken as
ingredients.
Label all containers.

There should be available potable wat.r.r and hand washing facilities
Ensure clean, and pest-free environment
Ensure availability of food covets and containers for serving and storage .
Observe hygienic practices on food preparation, cooking display, serving and storage
Dry goods must be stored in dry storage area and perishable toods in cold storage area; fonow
storing instructions.
Practice waste segregation.

Be conscious of expiry dates of foods; practice First-in, First-Out (FIfo'O) policy.
