Rescue Rope
The most popular ropes for rescue are the all nylon, 1/2-inch. kernmantle ropes, such as CMC Rescue Lifeline. They combine durability, ruggedness, good handling for tying knots and rigging systems, and good control when working with descenders. Very low stretch rope, such as CMC Rescue Static-Pro, are increasing in popularity as the minimum stretch provides increased efficiency during rappels and when used for hauling systems.
Harnesses
The versatility of the ProTech FireRescue Harness makes it a good choice for a fire service full-body harness. It combines comfort for rappels and online rescues, plus meets the requirements for fall protection. CMCs ProSeries Rescue Harness has been the first choice of rescuers for many years and provides the ultimate in comfort. Full-body harnesses are becoming more popular and CMCs designs include an ANSI Z359 fall arrest attachment point. The CMC ProSeries Confined Space Rescue Harness has the widest selection of attachment points.
Harnesses
The CMC Rescue Harness is a lightly padded harness for the rescuer who wants to balance comfort with reduced bulk. Adding the leg loops to the ProSeries Uniform Rappel Belt provides a compact harness. For training or longer duration rescues, the CMC ProSeries Rescue Harness continues to be popular for its comfort and performance.
Carabiners
Omega Pacific and CMC Rescue Steel Carabiners have been the mainstay of heavy rescue rigging. For departments that prefer an auto-locking carabiner, CMC Rescue Large Steel Auto-Locking Carabiner has a 3-stage locking gate that can be opened with one hand. If weight is an issue, CMCs new ProSeries Carabiners offer NFPA General Use strength in two sizes of aluminum carabiners.
Helmets
The Petzl Vertex Vent Helmet is lightweight, comfortable, and provides the protection needed in a highangle environment, but is gaining popularity in the industrial arena as well. It has clips for securely retaining goggles or a headlamp. The unique vent system opens or closes as needed.
Descenders
The rack has become the lowering device of choice for rescue systems and the CMC Rescue Rack is certified to the General Use requirements of NFPA 1983. Figure 8s are still popular for rappels and the CMC Rescue 8 works well for lowering systems using 11 or 12.5 mm ropes.
Helmets
The Bullard Advent A2 is a popular adjustable helmet for fire rescue and industrial rescue teams. Bullards versatile USRX Search & Rescue Helmet is compliant with NFPA 1951 and 1971.The Petzl Vertex Vent is popular with industrial and high angle teams due to its light weight and comfort.
Gear Bags
Efficient gear storage has led to the design of new packs and gear bags. The CMC Rescue SystemPac holds an Anchor Plate with a rescue system attached, ready to pull out and connect to the anchor. The CMC Rescue Truck Cache carries the hardware for two complete systems in one bag, that fits easily in a compartment on the fire engine or rescue truck. The CMC Rescue Quick Response Bag holds a lot of gear and the many pockets protect and organize it.
Radio Harnesses
The fast moving rescuer needs to be able to operate hands-free and the CMC Radio Harnesses keep the radio in a protected location that requires minimum use of the hands to operate. Added pockets allow organization and storage of spare batteries, GPS, compass, pens, and notebooks. A variety of models allows the user to select the harness that ideally meets their unique requirements.
Gloves
CMC Rescue Rappel Gloves have the extra protection needed for rappels without sacrificing the dexterity needed for rigging systems. When increased dexterity is needed, such as for tying knots or when rigging systems, consider the CMC Rescue Riggers Gloves.
Gloves
Gloves are a balance of hand protection and dexterity. The CMC Rescue Rappel Glove provides excellent hand protection whether on rappel, rigging systems, or thrashing through brush. The CMC Rescue Riggers Glove provides even more dexterity while still maintaining a high level of hand protection.
Stretchers
Basket stretchers provide excellent patient comfort and protection for high and low-angle evacuations and the CMC ProSeries models represent the most current design. The Traverse Advantage has the strength of the all steel stretchers with the added protection of a plastic shell. As a light-duty, disaster stretcher, the ProTech Rescue Stretcher provides surprising performance at an affordable price.
Headlamps
The Princeton Tec Yukon HL has the ruggedness of an all LED light with the brightness of most incandescent lights and carries UL certification for hazardous atmospheres. The super bright Princeton Tec EOS is compact and lightweight, and an excellent, cost-effective choice for all around rescue applications.
Headlamps
Helmet-mounted headlamps still seem to be the favorite for wilderness rescuers, probably since most of us use them for our other wilderness activities as well. The headlamps from Princeton Tec provide LED durability with high performance. The compact top of the line Apex has a powerful LED for a spot with a separate array for flood lighting. The EOS combines lightweight with a penetrating spot with adjustable brightness.

Climbing Rope
When climbing above your belayer or if you anticipate a fall factor greater than .25, you need a dynamic rope such as those used by rock climbers. These ropes of nylon fiber and kernmantle construction are designed for excellent handling and maximum energy absorption.
Carabiners
Aluminum carabiners, such as CMC ProTech Locking D Carabiners and CMC Rescue Aluminum Locking D Carabiners meet the requirements for high strength and minimum weight. The new CMC ProSeries Carabiners have General-Use strength with only a slight increase in weight.
Descenders
Some mountain rescue teams are converting to racks and some are staying with the Figure 8 descenders. The aluminum CMC Rescue 8 is a large rescue descender with a proprietary, long wearing finish. The compact CMC Rappel 8 is a good choice for a personal descender that works well on rope sizes up to 7/16 inch.
Escape Line
Since Escape Lines spend most of their time being carried, they should be light in weight and compact enough to stay out of the way when working a fire. All certified escape lines provide sufficient strength for the bailout rappel. The difference is their resistance to the heat of the fire ground environment. While the nylon and polyester fiber ropes meet the NFPA requirement for heat resistance, some ropes add aramid fibers to provide an added level of resistance.
Prusik Cord
A Prusik Cord is a climbing accessory cord used to tie a Prusik Hitch around the rescue rope. A good Prusik Cord has just the right stiffness to reliably grab the rescue rope with the cord. A cord that is too stiff will not grab automatically when needed. Soft cords grab too easily, making them hard to manage, and tend to wear out quickly.
Ladder Halyard
A halyard for a fire service ladder must be easy to grip with gloves and, because ladders are stored on the exterior of the trucks, excellent resistance to sun and rain is necessary. Single or double braid ropes work well in pulleys and can be spliced for clean end terminations. CMC Rescue Ladderline is a doublebraid construction using polyester fiber for resistance to sun and moisture.
Stretchers
Weighing only 17 lbs., the ProSeries Titanium SplitApart Stretcher combines ultralight weight with high strength when transport is by foot. The compact storage size makes the SKED Stretcher easy to store and transport for wilderness teams or ski patrols. The Traverse Rescue Stretcher is ideal for a lightweight stretcher.
RIT Line
In many areas it has become a standard practice to deploy a small cord behind the firefighter when entering an area where low visibility and the floor plan increases the chance of becoming lost. Called RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) Lines or Guide Lines, these ropes let the RIT team retrace your path and find you. Aramid fibers are the preference for their resistance to flame and high temperatures.

Here is how we suggest you decide how much elongation is right for you. First, determine a maximum acceptable impact force that a stretcher system should be able to tolerate without causing harm to the people or failure of the system. The value that has been Unfortunately, in a rappel or stretcher system, rope with high elonsuggested by many, and is being considered for several standards, gation is a problem. When a person on rappel or tending a stretcher is 15 kN. This number was proposed many years ago by the British Columbia Kernmantle Life Safety Rope Performance Comparison Council on Technical Rescue for their Belay Competence Drop Test standard. Light-Use 3/8-inch (9.5 mm)
Model 3 MBS lbf. (kN) Elongation % at 300 lbf. Elongation % at 600 lbf. Elongation % at 1,000 lbf. Weight lbs. (kg)/100 ft.
Next, determine the desired stopping distance in your belay system. This requires looking at both elongation in the rope and the type of belay device being used. The BCCTR standard recommends a maximum stopping distance of 1 meter. When you have determined your requirements for impact force and stopping distance, test your belay system to see if it meets your needs. View the system as a whole, including rope, belay device, operator, and anticipated loads. Different belay systems can impart different impact forces on the system and should be tested as a unit. ASTM F2436-05 Standard Test Method
for Measuring the Performance of Synthetic Rope Rescue Belay Systems and Equipment provides a test method
for comparing one system to another. The best belay system will be one that arrests a fall in the shortest distance and stays below the maximum acceptable force on the systems components.

Halyard Clamp
Ladderline can be spliced to make a strong, neat connection to the anchor point on the ladder, but it can be an involved process. The brass Halyard Clamp is quick and easy to install, requiring only a mallet to fold the prongs over on the doubled rope. Our testing on 1/2 inch Ladderline indicates the clamp slips at 800 lbs. While not as strong as a knot or well made splice, it is sufficiently strong for most customers requirements. Fits 1/2 and 3/8 inch Ladderline.
Ladderline was designed as an optimal halyard for fire service extension ladders. The special spun polyester sheath provides smoother handling and an excellent grip, with or without gloves, wet or dry. Ladderline is constructed of 100% polyester fiber for minimum stretch and sag caused by changing environmental conditions. The polyester fiber will not rot or mildew, providing longer service life. With a double-braid construction, Ladderline can be spliced. CMC recommends using a Halyard Clamp for easy installation. Color: White with a red tracer.

Whats a 3 MBS?
You would think that answering the question how strong is that carabiner? or other item of rescue equipment would be relatively easy. Even with metals like aluminum and steel, two identical carabiners will break at slightly different forces. Maybe only a hundred pounds different, but still different. Breaking the five samples called for by the NFPA test method will provide five different results. If the average breaking strength is reported, the odds that your carabiner is weaker than the average are pretty good. Even if the strength of the weakest carabiner is used as the rating, there is still the possibility that your carabiner could be weaker and there is no way to know how much weaker. The industry solution is to use a statistical formula, referred to as three sigma (3), that says that the minimum breaking strength calculation is 99.87% reliable. NFPA 1983 specifies a performance standard for rescue equipment. For example, a general-use carabiner must have a 3 sigma minimum breaking strength of at least 40 kN (8,992 lbf). The test method requires five samples and a 3 MBS is calculated. The 2006 edition of the standard allows the manufacturer to label the product with the MBS required by the standard or any higher number that is not more than the actual 3 MBS calculated from the test results of the five samples. CMC feels that the user is best served if we label hardware with the minimum MBS required by the standard, while providing the actual 3 MBS figures in our literature. During the transition between NFPA 1983, 2001 edition and the 2006 edition, there is not enough time for Underwriters Laboratories to test all of CMCs products before the publication of the catalog. Where we do not have the test results that provide the calculated MBS, we have left the MBS blank. If the product is marked as meeting the standard, then you know that it meets the MBS required by the standard and is marked accordingly. For the actual 3 MBS or any questions regarding product performance, just give us call or check our website at www.cmcrescue.com.

Completely redesigned and refined in 2006, the CMC CSR Pulley is a professional tool for Confined Space Rescue and numerous other rope access and rescue applications. It has a proprietary locking system and, unlike other pulleys that rely on a toothed cam, the CMC CSR Pulley can be unlocked while under load. By eliminating the cam, the pulley system is much more compact when fully collapsed. Another Swivel Double Pulley safety feature is the integral swivel that reduces torque by aligning the pulley with the load. A built-in swivel is considerably more compact as it eliminates the need for multiple connections to incorporate a separate swivel, robbing the raising system of valuable clearance under tripods. The forged steel eye provides exceptional strength. The CSR Pulley, and its companion Swivel Double Pulley, both have high strength aluminum side plates, sealed ball bearings, and anodized aluminum sheaves. Accepts 7/16 and 1/2 in. (11 to 13 mm) diameter rope.

Built in Sheave LockTM locks the sheave for use as a highstrength tie-off
The CMC ProSeries Hi-Line Carriage incorporates significant improvements that make it the most functional and versatile highline carriage, knot passing pulley, and high strength tie-off available. For highlines, the rigging holes allow for excellent separation of taglines and hoist ropes for reeving variations. For English and Norwegian Reeves, this results in a greater spread between the hoist pulleys, thereby significantly reducing the chance of inadvertent spinning of the load below. The separate rigging holes make rigging easier and also prevent the issue of carabiners binding against each other. Additionally, the anodized aluminum sheave is fitted with sealed ball bearings for high efficiency. When a high-strength tie-off is required, the Hi-Line Carriage incorporates the simple, strong and innovative, built-in Sheave LockTM that completely eliminates the need for separate pins.

CMC Swivels
UL Classified to NFPA 1983
Our line of swivels are designed exclusively for CMC by Rock Exotica, the originator and leading manufacturer of the rescue swivel. Our three models offer the widest range of performance, allowing the user to select the strength, weight and dimensions that best meet their specific needs. Whether used in a rescue haul system, helicopter operations, or rope access, the addition of a swivel can help prevent system lines from wrapping about each other and can reduce spin caused by loading a free hanging rope. CMC Rescue Swivel The standard size rescue swivel for stretcher systems and helicopter operations combines high strength and light weight. Symmetrical holes provide room for multiple carabiners. High speed, multiaxis CNC machining allows a full featured swivel at a new, reduced price for the best value in the industry. ProSeries Swivel Designed to work at high loads, not just to survive them, this is a larger swivel with a special bearing that allows a much higher working load without damage than the bearings in other swivels. ProTech Swivel This compact, low-profile swivel is ideal for special uses where minimum size and weight are required such as wilderness rescue or tactical operations.

selecting a carabiner
Deciding which carabiner is best for an application requires deciding between such factors as strength, gate type, weight, and size. As usual, one factor may compromise another. Strength carabiners are quite strong and the D-shape models shift the load towards the spine, providing greater strength for the size and weight. Determining your expected system loads will help you decide between a General Use or Light Use model. More important is realizing that the way the carabiner is used in the system has a significant effect on its strength. Anything that moves the load away from the spine towards the gate, such as wide webbing or a 3-way loading, can reduce the carabiners practical strength, sometimes as much as 50%. This may require a stronger carabiner or the use of a Delta Quick Link. Gate a screw-lock gate is easy to use and less prone to having a mechanical problem, but you do have to remember to screw it locked. Some screw lock carabiners are susceptible to un-locking with vibration and a standard practice is to rig them with the lock on the down side. Auto-locks will lock automatically, if nothing gets in the way, and do not have the vibration issue making them popular with helicopter operations. Because it only takes a twist and push to open the gate, some users prefer the 3-stage gates for added security. Weight If you always drive to the rescue, steel carabiners give you the largest margin of safety. If you have to hike, climb, or fly to the rescue, aluminum carabiners can reduce weight significantly. CMCs new ProSeries carabiners provide General Use strength at less than half the weight of steel. Catalog figures are the latest calculated 3 MBS from the certification procedure at the time the catalog was produced. Product will be labeled with the minimum MBS required by the standard.

CMC Rescue 8
UL Classified to NFPA 1983 General Use
The classic CMC Rescue 8 design has been refined for even better performance with the current selection of rescue rope. Over twenty years ago, descenders had to accommodate rescue rope sizes from 7/16 to 5/8 inch. Today 5/8 in. rope is no longer common and the smaller dimensions of the new design provide greater control. CMCs exotic proprietary finish on the aluminum model provides outstanding wear resistance. The nickel-chrome plated steel model excels in the exceptionally high wear situations such as helicopter operations or sandy, gritty environments. The extended carabiner hole provides room for multiple carabiners. Both models are machined from 1/2 in. plate.

The design of the popular CMC Rappel 8 has also been refined. The slightly more compact design offers superb control on 3/8 to 7/16 in. rope, which makes it just right for SWAT teams, climbers, cavers, and sport rappellers. Machined from 1/2 in. aluminum plate, the Rappel 8 contains almost twice the material of other small 8s, providing better heat dissipation. Now with CMCs exotic proprietary finish for even longer wear resistance.

NFPA Standard 1983 Life Safety Harness and Belt Performance Requirements
The test method in the standard requires a static test and a drop test. The static test differentiates between load bearing attachment points and positioning attachment points with different load requirements for each. Where attachment points such as shoulder or side D-rings are intended to be used in pairs, the test will be done in pairs.
Positioning attachment points requirements are 2,923 lbf. (13kN) for the head up test and 2,248 lbf. (10 kN) for a horizontal test . Harnesses and escape belts are required to pass a drop test for each attachment point. The test method uses a 300 lb. (136kg) manikin dropped one meter on a 1.2 meter steel lanyard. Each sample is tested with a head up drop and a head down drop.

bump against the side during moving. Multiple mounting rings allow the pack to be suspended from an SCBA. A drawstring narrows the opening so even if the flap snags an object and is pulled open, the rope will not fall out. Available in Ara-Shield material or Cordura nylon. Escape Pocket The Escape Pocket mounts vertically on a SCBA, tool or escape belt, and has a top opening. A mounting ring on the top can be used to suspend the pocket from an SCBA. The pocket may be a good choice for a multiple-task rope, since its vertical orientation makes it easier to re-stuff while being worn. Available in Ara-Shield material or Cordura nylon.
Stuff Bag This is a simple bag with a drawstring closer. It can be suspended from an SCBA or stuffed in a large pocket. Available in Cordura nylon only.

Travel Restraint
Most rescues are conducted with at least one cabin door open. A critical component in such an operation is to maintain travel restraint while working. The CMC ProSeries Pick-Off Strap is ideal where short tethers are necessary. The CMC Rescue ATR Strap is designed for large size cabins where crew members are required to maintain mobility within their work area. The ATR strap is also ideal when making hoist transitions through the doorway.
Rope
Our aluminum CMC Rescue 8 and 1/2 or 7/16 inch CMC Rescue Static-Pro Lifeline kernmantle ropes are ideal for heli-rappel operations. From single rescuer insertions to large animal rescues, the CMC Short Haul Line is designed with performance in mind in order to accommodate short haul mission requirements.
Harness
The ProSeries Helitack Harness is designed primarily for hoist rescue operations. Multiple attachment points for travel restraint, as well as suspension, allow flexibility for the wearer to satisfy a variety of mission needs. The ProTech Fire-Rescue Harness is a simple and cost-effective design, ideal for multi-discipline rescuers.
Carabiners
Strong vibrations are inherent with helicopter operations. Our 3-stage autolocking CMC Rescue Steel and CMC ProSeries Aluminum Auto Locking D carabiners offer a higher level of security than traditional screw-lock carabiners for helicopter operations.
Patient Transport
The CMC ProSeries Titanium Rescue Stretcher is lightweight, rugged and versatile making it ideal for most hoist and short haul operations. Combined with the ProSeries Stretcher Harness, the length of the straps can be adjusted to accommodate both internal and externally mounted hoists. The Bauman Bag from Rainy Day Equipment is compact and its unique shape is designed to minimize oscillation when suspended beneath a helicopter. For ambulatory subjects, the Bauman Screamer Suit provides a rapid and secure method of evacuation.

ount Rushmore National Memorial is one of the most famous and recognizable sites in the United States. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota and visited by more than 2.6 million people each year, it is the largest sculpture in the world.
The massive work of art was created between 1927 and 1941 by a team of skilled workers under the direction of master sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Using blasting and carving techniques, they performed much of the work from rickety scaffolds and winch-suspended boatswains chairs. After its completion, Mount Rushmore was put under the care of the U.S. Park Service. Since that time, whenever Park Service personnel needed to access the 60-foot tall faceswhich was quite rarelythey would use the same winches and chairs that had been left by the original sculpting crew. Then, in 1998, sophisticated instrumentation was installed on the faces to monitor possible movement of the rock and changes in the size of existing cracks on the faces. As part of their on-going care of the sculpture, the Park Service began to realize they would have to have better access to the faces. Duane Bubac, Chief of Cultural Resources and Facilities at the Memorial, contacted the Bureau of Reclamation about possibly conducting training classes to equip a team of in-house personnel who could then perform routine inspections and maintenance on the mountain.

Students practiced rope to rope transfers under the Presidents noses to demonstrate the flexibility of modern rope-access techniques.
During the week of June 13, 2005, a rope-access training class was held at the memorial. Seven individuals, including law enforcement rangers, an interpretive ranger, three rangers from maintenance, and a park volunteer worker, received rope-access training. During the first few days, classes took place at the three-story parking garage near the base of the monument. This allowed easy access for the students, since the hike to the top of the heads takes 30-45 minutes. Midway during the week, however, the training was moved to the faces themselves. For several of the park personnel, actually working on the faces was a life-long goal, since access to them had always been extremely limited. Students practiced rope to rope transfers under the four Presidents noses to demonstrate the flexibility of modern rope-access techniques. The week concluded with a certification session run by a SPRAT evaluator (see sidebar at right). All seven of the trainees passed and received their SPRAT Worker Certification. Mt. Rushmore, as it turns out, is a nearly ideal venue for work with modern rope-access techniques. Access to the area above the access zone is quite good and closed to the public. The approach to top of the heads, although strenuous, is safe, and anchors can be placed in sound rock for every work area. The heads were sculpted in granite, which is generally quite smooth and extremely stable, so rock fall is rarely a concern. The hazard zone below the heads is also closed to the public, and despite appearances, most of the drops are relatively shorta 60-meter rope allows access the nearly any point on the sculpture.

When the Memorial was being constructed, workers used a combination of linseed oil, lead, and granite dust to seal the numerous cracks on the faces in order to minimize water infiltration into the host rock. Using their new rope access skills, Park service personnel will now be able to examine the sealing materials and determine how well it is working, and whether a more advanced material needs to be applied. They will work to make sure that the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln will continue to survey the South Dakota landscape for many decades to come. I

The Society for Professional Rope Access Technicians represents a variety of occupations that use rope to access a work location. Since 1997, SPRAT has been working to develop consensus-based safety and certification standards. The organization allows anyone working on rope to have a voice in issues that affect their occupation. SPRAT certification lets employers verify professional competence and experience. CMC Rescue is a founding member of SPRAT and continues to support the organization. Visit the SPRAT website at www.sprat.org.
CMC Rescue visited Mount Rushmore with a camera crew during the final days of the rope access teams training. We were given unprecedented access and allowed to visit the top of the monument in order to take the remarkable photographs you see on these pages. Our Mount Rushmore photos were taken by Kevin Steele (shown above), a photojournalist, who is also a highly experienced big wall climber. More of Kevins work can be seen at www.kevsteele.com.

This is particularly true on heavy rescue operations, confined space entries, or tactical responses. Alta Superflex Knee Pads reduce stress and fatigue to the knees, allowing you to work longer and more effectively. Alta pads are lightweight, but have a full 1/2-inch layer of foam padding. Not all subjects are injured or require immobilization and transport in a stretcher, so a rappel-based rescue can often be used. One common rappel-based rescue involves transferring the subject onto the rescuers descender. This is usually referred to as a pick off. Hands-on experience practicing and teaching this technique led to the development of the CMC ProSeries Pick Off Strap as a more efficient way of quickly securing a subject then transferring their weight. Todays CMC Rescue School classes teach team-based skills, and the pick off rescue now employs a main line and a belay line. The Pick Off Strap continues to be used for quick attachment to the subject, effecting the weight transfer, and then positioning the subject above the rescuer for best control. Similar product ideas that followed the Pick Off Strap included the CMC ProSeries Adjustable Stretcher Strap, which provided a more efficient tender tie-in for low angle evacuations, and the CMC ProSeries Load Release Strap. The Load Release Strap is a compact, simple, easy to rig way to release the load on the ratchet of the main line or a loaded belay device. These are just a few of the original CMC designs that have been widely adopted by rescuers around the world.

All firefighters should consider carrying the Cearley Rescue Strap in their turnout because it has many applicationsto quickly secure a downed firefighter who must be dragged, lifted, or lowered; as a hasty chest harness to pluck victims from above-ground windows or during swiftwater operations; or even as an emergency harness for self-rescue from upper floors. It has proven itself with our department when lives depend on quick and simple securing of victims for evacuation. Designed to hold stretcher harnesses, stretcher straps, tie-in straps or web, and anything else you need to go with your stretcher. Convenient Velcro straps allow the bag to be connected to the stretcher rail. Stretcher pack features a handle and carabiner loops and is made from the same tough Cordura nylon as our rope bags. Size: 20 x 7 in. Color: Orange. Item #432401 $51.00
Attaches to the interior of a Stokes basket litter quickly and easily, creating a bed that greatly increases patient comfort while maintaining support. The patent-pending StrtLoad attachment points for the CMC Stretchers allow any size carabiner to be used to attach a lifting bridle, while keeping both the carabiners and the lifting bridle on the inside of the stretcher's top rail (where it is protected from abrasion along cliff faces and building walls). The StrtLoad feature prevents cross gate and side loading of carabiners and orients the direction of pull along the spine of the carabiner where it is strongest. The stainless steel Str atLoad is 1/4-inch thick with a full-round radius on the inside edge, allowing a softattachment which is then protected by the top railing. The StrtLoad comes standard on Steel Stretchers and is available as an option on Ti Stretchers.

Multipod Features:
Color Coding Top and Bottom sections of the legs are colored differently to aid in assembly. The two parts of the head come in different colors for quick identification. Telescoping Legs The top legs telescope inside the lower legs and slide through the head to allow adjustment of both the overall height or the height of a single leg. Pulley Mount A pulley can be mounted directly into the head, eliminating the height lost when a carabiner is used as a connector. Head Set Pulley Wheel The Multipod includes a Head Set Pulley Wheel that mounts into the head set with a pin. This allows maximum height adjustment and eliminates the need for additional hardware.

CONFINED SPACE
Industrial Rescue
The industrial rescuer uses much of the same equipment as the General Use Fire/Rescue responder or the confined space specialist with consideration for any workplace safety regulations. Equipment particularly suitable for the industrial rescuer is highlighted here. Harness The CMC ProTech Riggers Harness or the CMC/Roco Universal One-Piece Harness have the performance of a rescue harness and have a Z359.1 type fall arrest attachment point. Helmet The Petzl Vertex Vent Helmet is a lightweight, comfortable helmet that meets ANSI requirements. The Bullard Advent A2 combines an industry leading safety helmet with the adjustable 3-point harness system necessary for work at height. Radio Harness The CMC ProSeries Radio Harness provides accessible, secure storage for the radio with room for accessories. Gloves The CMC Rescue Rappel Glove provides a balance of protection, dexterity, and durability. If greater dexterity is needed for working with ropes or patients, consider the CMC Rescue Riggers Glove. Carabiner Steel carabiners such as the CMC Rescue Large Steel models provide the strength and durability for industrial rescue. If using steel is a concern, the CMC ProSeries Carabiners provide high strength in an aluminum carabiner.

The performance of the PFD may vary with the clothing and equipment that you intend to wear and should be evaluated prior to use. Consideration should be given to free board, the ability of the harness to turn the wearer face up, and other considerations. The owners manual attached to the harness includes instructions on how to evaluate the products performance.

A CMC Exclusive
Rick Cearley is a retired senior helicopter pilot for the Los Angeles County Fire Department and inventor of the LSP Cinch Rescue Collar.
