The first task is to remove the silicone plugs in the screw holes on the back panel and the undo and remove the screws. Be careful, these parts are tiny, so get a pot or something handy to put them in whilst you perform the upgrade. Once the back is removed, the two screws on the left hand side top and bottom corners of the SSD must be removed. You can then carefully jiggle the SSD and pull it out of it's socket by sliding it to the left. Note there is a flexible black plastic cover stuck onto the SSD... I peeled this off and placed it in the same position on the new SSD.
Once that is removed, the cables connecting the various parts to the main circuit board are unplugged by lifting the little retaining bar on the top of each socket... once these are lifted, the flat cables simply slide out.

Next I removed the 3 screws that hold the main circuit board to the chassis. Then I carefully lifted the board. You need to do this slowly and carefully as the CPU and chipset chips are stuck via little heat transfer pads to a couple of "heatsink" bumps on the main chassis. You can see them here in this picture of the board being lifted up... alsop note the potion of the RAM socket on the underside of the board:

Replacing the RAM SO-DIMM is simnply a case of flicking the metal reataining clips outwards and the SO-DIMM pops up so that you can slide it out of the socket... simply slide the new SO-DIMM into the same socket with the same orientation and gently press it back down until the retaining clips snap back into place.

Whilst I was performing the upgrade, I noticed a couple of wires that were retained underneath the main circuit board, just underneath the big ribbon cable PCB edge connector situated on the corner of the main PCB just below the fan... they had little mini plugs on the end as normally employed to connect WiFi antennaes to Mini-PCIe cards. I've shown them in the next two pictures... does anyone know what these two cables are for? Could they be in place for a "not-installed" 3G modem?

With everything installed I simply reinstalled the parts in reverse order. The first job was to install Ubuntu (the 11.04 dekstop beta).

I then connected the old SSD using a SATA to USB board from an old external USB drive caddy.

The next job was to copy the old Android 1.6 and Windows 7 partitions from the old SSD to the new one using the GParted system tool:
Having reached this point I was unable to get either the Android 1.6 install to boot (it just hung straight after exiting the GRUB bootloader) or the Windows 7 install (it detected the fact that it was on a new drive, refused to continue and suggested using a restore or repair disk. Neither are a particular propblem as I can install my own copy of Windows, which I have now done, and can always reinstall the Android 1.6 OS using the ISO downloaded from Viewsonic. The next tasks are to install either Android 2.2 (Froyo) and use that if it is stable enough, if not, I'll create a further partiton and reinstall Android 1.6 alongside Ubuntu, Wndows 7 and and Android 2.2. The task after that will be to configure GRUB to offer all OS's as options for booting. I'll keep you all posted! Last edited by DaveBoulden on Mon Apr 18, 2011 10:42 am, edited 1 time in total. For those interested, to add an Android entry to the GRUB2 bootloader, I followed the instructions here: http://www.franklinstrube.com/blog/dual-booting-ubuntu-netbook-remix-and-android-x86-on-an-asus-eee-pc/ DaveBoulden Posts: 12 Joined: Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:27 am Location: Kent. UK. Website Top

to make it's GRUB2 install the active bootloader). The file you need to edit is "/etc/grub.d/40_custom" and the applicable entries as it is installed on my tablet to add Tegatech's April update Android 2.2 beta is: Code: Select all

The first 6 lines will already exist, you just add the 2 "menuentry" blocks below that. The parts that may differ on your install are the path in the 3rd and 4th line of each entry (the "/android-2011-04-12/" part). I found the correct values for mine by checking the path used in the GRUB bootloader that comes with the Android 2.2 beta (the actual file is "/grub/menu.lst") DaveBoulden Posts: 12 Joined: Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:27 am Location: Kent.
