ABSTRACT

This paper p~esents ~ revised form of the Kozeny equation fop laminar fluid flow throuEh packed beds in t e ~ m s of paPZlcle shape factor and surface mean d l a m e t e ~ , r a t h e r than speelflc surface. T h e equation is based upon a model of pore formation which takes into account the IntePlocklnE of I P r e z u l a r p a r t i c l e 8 . It Is concluded that fop compaPatlve p u r p o s e s the 'effective' specific suPfac e is a quantity which can be derived exactly from peln~eabillty and porosity measurement. The effective specific surface affords a ready means of control in compa~InE one packln E with another, pPovlded that a standard, conventional method is adopted fop the a s s e s m e n t of surface mean dlameteP.

INTRODUCTION

For well o v e r f o r t y years the accepted equation of fluid flow in p e r m e a m e t ~ in the laminar ranEe has been the Kozeny-Car~nan(l.2) equatlon. Cal'~an(3) and DaIlavalle(4) suzEested independently in 1938 that the deter~nlnation of speeiflc surface should be earrled out by m e a n s of permeability measurement, and by 1941CalT~an bad elaborated upon the appropPlate m e t h o d s for doinE so. The importance of Kozeny-Ca1~nan in p e r ~ e a m e t r y has been recoEnized in the literature, and In International symposia on Particle Size Analysis, since that time.
