This means having an equal judgment and treatment of all individuals hence in the circumstances in which an opportunity for a certain position is brought up, the decision being made must be under no bias. This act mainly highlighted the basic principles under which womens rights and treatment was based under statute law. This helps to establish standard rights of women, provided equitable access to jobs, career paths, training and staff development and equitable conditions of employment. Hence the equal opportunity act generally means: - treating people with dignity and respect - unbiased management - ensuring equal access in all areas of employment including recruitment, training and development, promotion, transfer, access to information, supervision and management of staff and conditions of employment, with all selection based on merit (the best person for the job) - recognition and respect for the social and cultural backgrounds of staff and customers. In other words, diversity is valued The equal opportunity for woman in the workplace aims to remove the barriers for women in the workplace, both when they enter and as they advance. Under the act, any organisation that has 100 or more employees and that is a higher education institution, a private sector company, a non-profit or community organisation, a private school, or a union must develop and implement such a workplace program. Government - The federal office for woman, of which the primary role is to provide policy advice to minister for the status of women, and to ensure that the government and cabinet decisions about legislation, policy and budgetary matters Non-government - The Womens legal resource centre, based in Sydney. This service provides legal advice and referrals for any women needing assistance upon all issues on woman rights. Trade unions trade unions are strong advocates for women rights as they are main government lobby focusing on equal rights in the workplace. Hence the Trade unions focuses on achieving: o equal pay for equal pay o parental leave for women o improved child care o universal superannuation o anti-discrimination and affirmative action legislation
