Operations Students visit Pragati Power Plant at Delhi.

On 20th September, 2012, the students of Operations Management (PGDM II year) went on an industry visit to Delhi, under the supervision of Dr. S.K.Dube, Area Chairperson Operations Management. Total 30 students in the batch of 15 each, got the functional glimpse of gas turbine based two famous power plants namely Indraprastha Power Generation Co. Ltd (IPGCL) and Pragati Power Corporation Ltd.(PPCL). Both power plants are profit oriented and highly rated in the country and presently functioning under the control of Delhi Government. At the conference room, all students were given thorough briefings by the General Manager of the Plant, Er. Arora. In a very lucid manner, basic functioning of the plants was explained to the students. According to Er. Arora, daily consumption of coal at the plant is equivalent to 60 wagons of Indian Raiways and two months of buffer stock of coal is maintained at the plant site. Both, GTPS and PPCL, supplies electricity to Delhi, which has huge demand of electricity, to the tune of 5000 MW.

The first group visited the GTPS plant under the guidance of Mr. Shahab Ahmed (Asst. Manager). The GTPS plant is a mixed cycle based power plant, where two gas plants of 30MW capacity each generates electricity and the third plant of steam turbine of 30 MW, depends on the re-use of steam discharged by the former two. There are three modules of 90 MW each, generates total 270 MW. During our visit, only one module was on run mode while rests two were on idle mode. Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) provides gas to the plants on regular basis. The control room provided the overall picture of power generation and supply. GTPS supplies to seven feeders like DMRC1&2, Akshardham, VIP areas, and others. The beauty of such plant is that when there is less demand of electricity, one or two modules can be stopped and thus saves huge money. In the post lunch session, students visited the PPCL, under the guidance of Er. Vikas Kumar Singh (Asst. Manager). Here, three modules of 330 MW each, based on two gas based 102 MW and the third 126MW of steam based power plants are functioning. Students were also exposed to water purification plant at the site. As per the environmental laws, the power plants cannot use river water or underground water. Hence, PPCL is using recycled water of the Delhis waste water. With a limited number

of 70 engineers and staff both, PPCL is doing great job to the country by providing electricity round the clock. In nutshell, one can say that our power plants are optimally generating electricity on a truncated staff of 70, while least polluting the environment and offering more than Rs. 100 Crores as profit. With this impression in mind, our budding managers returned back to institute thoroughly satisfied.
