Chennai

The fourth largest city of India, Chennai is bedecked with temples, churches and beaches. This is a popular metro city in the country that is very well connected to all the parts of the country. When To Go

History

Bus
The most extensive intra city transport system in Chennai is the bus service. This is government controlled and run by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation. Bus services extend to most parts of the city and suburbs. Volvo air conditioned buses also ply in the city. The bus fares range from Rs. 4 to Rs. 40.

The Chennai international and domestic airports are located about 15 Kilometers from the city and the traveler has easy access to the city. Pre paid auto rickshaws and cabs are available from the airport and train stations. Both the terminals have many booths set up and various private taxi companies run shuttle services from the airport to the city. They charge approximately Rs. 450 to the city for an SUV. Airport Taxis available at the airport are cheaper and most of them are air conditioned. One can use the suburban trains which operate from just outside the airport is also good. It is advisable to buy a first class ticket as the trains can be crowded.

Marina Beach

The famous Marina Beach, the pride of Chennai, is second longest beach in the world and has a wide sandy foreshore. One can see statues of heroes from Tamil culture to Samadhi of great leaders like Anna and MGR here. Walk along the Marina in the evening to cool off and eat crispy sundal and murukku. An aquarium is also located on the Marina Beach. Watching sunset and sunrise from the beach is a fascinating experience. The tsunami on December 26, 2004, caused massive death and destruction along the beach. It has been difficult to recover, but the community is working hard to make the area attractive to tourists and vacationers once again.

MGR Film City

The Government of Tamil Nadu manages the MGR Film City, established in 1994 in memory of MG Ramachandran, popular film actor and longtime Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Covering 70 acres at Taramani in Chennai, the MGR Film City was a popular tourist spot and the setting of several South Indian films. The film city has a film school, indoor and outdoor shooting locations, replicas of village and urban areas, temple, church, mosque, post office, police station, prison, courtroom, and landscaped gardens in Italian, Japanese and Mughal styles. Vivekananda House (Ice House)

Vivekananda House, also known as Ice House, is a shrine and target of pilgrimage for the admirers of Swami Vivekananda. It is in this house that Swami Vivekananda stayed for six weeks in 1900. Built way back in 1877 or much earlier, the two-story house is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture with its characteristic designs of sunburst and gabled roof. The bedroom where Vivekananda stayed, lived and slept is now a safe haven for meditation. One can respectfully see the table at which he dined, placed downstairs near the fireplace. Devotees can stroll through the kitchen where he cooked his simple food, the parlor where he spoke and the garden where he frequently played with the children. Ashtalakshmi Temple

Ashtalakshmi Temple is a highly revered shrine situated in Besant Nagar, on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The architecture of the temple is unique, with the deities installed in four levels. It looks different than the other South Indian temples as it a modern construction, less than 25 years old. The temple enshrines Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess of Wealth and Lord Vishnu as the principal deities. The temple has separate shrine for the Ashtalakshmi forms of Goddess Lakshmi. Breezy Beach

Connemara Library

Connemara Public Library at Chennai is one of the four deposit libraries' in India which entitles them to a copy of every publication in India. The library began in 1861 as part of the Madras Museum and in 1896 Lord Connemara, the then Governor of Madras Presidency, opened it to the public. Henry Irwin, the renowned architect designed the building in the Pantheon complex in Chennai. The library stores a rapidly growing collection of over half a million books. Periodicals hall, reference and video rooms, an entire floor for books of various Indian languages and a Braille Library are the highlights here. The library also has a rich collection of rare books like the 1608 edition of The Bible and the whole set of Hortus Indicus Malabaricus. This library has been a UN depository center since 1956. Fort St George

Fort St George is an important and marvelous landmark in Chennai. In Tamil Nadu political leaders aim to reach this Fort, as the Secretariat and Legislative Assembly are housed here. This beautiful edifice is situated on the eastern side of the city, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. The British East India Company, under the direct supervision of Andrew Cogon, built it in 1640 AD. This place achieved its name from Saint George, the patron saint of England. The fort houses Saint Mary's Church and fort museum. Saint Mary's Church the oldest Anglican Church built in 1680 and the tombstones in its courtyard are the oldest British tombstones in India. The 46 m high flagstaff at the front is a mast salvaged from the 17th century shipwreck. Fort St George is regarded as the birthplace of the modern Indian army. It houses a number of nonmilitary structures within its precincts. Thick massive walls and moats surround the fort. Fort St George houses several interesting monuments, which include st. Mary's Church (the oldest Anglican Church built in 1680), Fort Museum and the tombstones in the courtyard.

Marundeeswarar Temple

Marundeeswarar Temple, God of Medicines, in Tiruvanmiyur has the temple deity Shiva in the form of Marundeeswar or Aushadeeswarar. Mythology says that it was Agastya, great saint, who named the deity "Aushadeeswarar". The Sun and the Moon, it is said, perform puja at this temple every evening. Unlike other Siva temples, this temple does not have a shrine to the Navagrahas because the Sun and Moon are in prayer mode here. The main "lingam" is described as Swayambu. He is also called "Palvannanathan" because Kamadhenu, the divine cow, used to shower him with milk constantly. During the festival period the deity will be taken on procession in the middle of the day. The chariot, a high one, with the deity and the priests standing at least 6 or 7 feet above the crowd, and devotees use two long ropes pulls the deity around the temple. Lots of devotees visit this holy temple and get the blessing of Lord Shiva. Those who visit this temple sincerely believe, as do the priests, that the mixture of sacred ash, milk and water offered at the temple and consumed thereafter can cure any ailment. National Art Gallery (Victoria Memorial Hall)

National Art Gallery, also known as Victoria Memorial Hall) is located in the Pantheon complex, Egmore. It is a pink sandstone building that was built in Jaipuri-Jaina style. T. Namberumal Chetty built the gallery in 1907. The gallery contains various traditions of Indian painting including the Rajput and Moghul schools. It has 11th and 12th century Indian handicrafts, 17th century Deccan paintings, 16th to 18th century Mughal and Rajasthani paintings and 10th and 13th century bronzes. Timings: 9:30AM - 5:00PM. Prakasam Salai

Opposite Parry's Corner, one of the Chennai milestones built in 1795, it is an impressive stylish building in Indo-Saracenic style with grandeur in red bricks. Prakasam Salai, earlier known as Popham's Broadway, a distance off George Town, has a cluster of old shrines that include Kandaswamy Koil, Tucker's Church, a Wesleyan Chapel and the Anderson's Church. The attractive white structure, close to Chennai Central, has dimension 252 ft. by 126 ft rectangular shape. This classic structure, presently the headquarters of Chennai Corporation, is a blending of three types of architectural styles - Gothic, Ironic and Corinthian. To support the huge structure, the walls have been erected with stock bricks, composed and plastered in lime mortar. Teak wood pillars support the roofs. The Cuddapah stone flooring has been re-laid with marble in the ground floor. The flooring on the first and second levels is with the pressed terracotta variety. A mighty clock of 8 feet diameter and a tall tower of 132 ft jewel the building. The clock is equipped with a mechanical key system, which is to be wound every day. This is a classic structure worth seeing.

Santhome Cathedral Basilica

Santhome Cathedral is a historical ancient pilgrim centre built during the period of the 14th to the 15th century A D by the Portuguese. Thirumalai Thirupathi Devasthanam Temple

Thronged by millions of people daily, the world famous Shri Venkateshwara Temple is placed very high at Tirupati in Thirumalai. This is most celebrated abode of Lord Vishnu and located on the seventh peak of Venkata Hill known as Venkatachala of the Tirumala Hillocks and lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. The designation, Venkateshwara, also called the Lord of the Seven Hills and also known as Venkatachala Pathi means Lord of the Venkata Hill, is obtained by the Lord's regime over Venkatachala. The Hindu mythological verses tells that in the Kali Yuga, one can attain moksha, only by worshipping Sri Venkateshwara. The temple, with three 'Prakarams' or enclosures, contains the 'Dhvajastambha' or the banner pole and the images of Krishnadevaraya, Vijayanagara king and his companions, and also of Todarmal who was the minister of Akbar. The daily program starts at early morning 3 am with Suprabhatam', which means awakening the Lord and ends at midnight with the 'Ekanta Seva' (putting the Lord to sleep). The most significant festival celebrated in the temple is the Brahmolsavam. Valluvar Kottam

Valluvar Kottam is an auditorium, with a capacity to hold 4,000 people, built in remembrance of the poet-saint Tiruvalluvar, located in Chennai. Verses of the poet Tiruvalluvar are emblazoned on the pillars around the auditorium and a major draw here is the 101-feet high temple chariot structure, which attracts many tourists. The shape and structure of the building is similar to a temple chariot. Thoughtful lines from the epic Thirukkural have been written in bas-relief in the front lobby corridors of the chariot. This auditorium and the Chariot structure are the living symbols of cultural, societal and artistic heritage of Tamilnadu.

There are innumerable temples for the Lord Muruga in Tamilnadu, but Aarupadaiveedus literally means six fighting fields, the six highly revered shrines of Lord Muruga, are considered as most important. Ananthaa Padmanabha Swaamy Temple


This is a contemporary temple built in 1962 on land donated by His Highness Chitra Thirunal. Anantha Padmanabha, name derived from the words Padma (lotus) and nabha (navel), is depicted to be offering worship to Lord Shiva in the form of Linga. This temple is built on the same model as that of Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple at Trivandrum. The inner chamber houses the statue of Lord Vishnu in the form of Anantha Padmanabha as placed in Trivandrum. There are three doors through which one can see the divine head, mighty body and lotus feet of the Lord who is lying on the divine snake Adisesha with its hood caring the Lords head. The right hand is resting and worshipping the Siva Lingam and the feet on a lotus. Springing from the navel is a lotus stem with flower on which Brahma is seated. This is worth religious place to visit, to those looks for solitude and enchanting peace.

Annai Velankani Church


Annai Velankanni Shrine is situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal, at the Elliot's beach, in Chennai. This beautiful shrine is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Annai Velankani. Dutch Fort
The 400 year old Dutch Fort is located in Sadras town, about 70 km south of Chennai. The fort is 100 m both wide and length, with a few many rooms, gallows as well as a couple of old cannons at the gate. Jain Temple
First Jain temple in South India is in Chennai, this temple is known as Shree Gujarati Swetamber Jain Mandir. Lord Parshwanatha, the 23rd Teerthankar is the presiding deity of this renowned shrine. The three gopurams and five doors of the Mandir have marble carvings based on the architectural principles of the famous Dilwara temples. Kapaleeshwara Temple (Kapali Temple)

Karpagambal, his consort, is another major deity. The architecture is a supreme example of ancient Dravidian style, with typical side entrances, gopurams, courts and a tank built around the central shrine. The 37 m tall gopuram (pillar) is carved with stucco gods, goddesses, and saints. The bronze statues of 63 Shaivite saints adorn the temple courtyard. The courtyard also has a Punnai tree, one of the oldest trees in Chennai. The tree has a small shrine that depicts the legend that gave Mylapore its name. The tank, once full of water, was best seen during the Theppam or float festival every January when lighted lamps would be set afloat on the waters. This tank is now dry. Luz Church (Church of Our Lady of Light)


Church of Our Lady of Light', popularly known as Luz Church, is located in a tiny corner of Mylapore, in Chennai. The church, built by Franciscan missionaries from Portugal in honor of Mother Mary in 1516, is commonly known as Kaatu Kovil' (Church located in a forest) amongst the local people.. It is the first church built in honor of 'Our Lady of Light' and is believed to be the oldest church in Chennai. Madhya Kailash Temple


This is a recently built, a pleasant white structure striking the eyes, is located on the left at the Taramani turn-off in Adyar. This temple has many specialities. Parthasarathy Temple
Sri Parthasarathy Temple is located at Triplicane, near the famous Marina beach in Chennai. Spread over an area of 1.5 acres, it was built by the Pallavas in the 8th century. The temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna (Parthasarathy), houses images of the five incarnations of Vishnu. It also has a small shrine dedicated to Vedavalli Ammai, Vishnu's consort. The museum houses a variety of praise worthy art objects gathered by Rukmini Devi from different parts of the world. It includes paintings, sculptures, art objects and the sarees worn by Rukmini Devi among some other valuable collections. Some of the these objects were presented to her by Yagneswara Shastri, elder brother of Rukmini Devi and a large set was gifted by he friend James H. Cousins, a renowned Irish poet. Sri Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple


Uttara Guruvayurappan temple is located in Nanganallur, once a thick forest populated by many tapasvis' and now a temple town, the abode of many Gods and Goddesses. An ardent devotee of Lord uruvayoorappan Tapsvi Bilwamangal had a divine vision' of the Lord who assured him that a temple would be built in Nanganallur. This temple came to be called Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple' since it is north of the original temple in Kerala and have the main deity Sri Guruvayurappan. Pal payasam' is a special offering to the Lord. The temple is based on Kerala architecture and the kumbabishekam was conducted on April 17, 1975. The namaskara mandapam have the idol of saint Bilwamangal' in the front. This is a pious place to visit and offer the prayers to Lord Guruvayurappan.

Sringeri Saradha Peetam Temple

St Andrew's Kirk Cathedral


The Church, also known as 'the Kirk,' was built in 1780 and branded as `the Queen of Scottish Churches in the East'. St Andrew's Church, which was constructed basically for the Scottish community in Chennai, is one of the supreme examples of Georgian architecture in India. There is an arching dome tinted with Lapis Lazuli and the sixteen fluted Corinthian columns add to the loveliness of the church. A special aspect of the Kirk cathedral is its hidden foundation. Sanctified in 1821, it is presently under the Church of South India (CSI). Colonel James Caldwell and Major Thomas Fort de Havilland were the persons guided the whole construction for the benefits of Scottish Community in India. St George's Cathedral
St. George's Cathedral is the Cathedral Church of the Church of South India, Diocese of Madras. The Cathedral is placed in the heart of the city and is a majestic building with the tower reaching the skies high as if catching up with proximity to God in prayer for the the whole world. The parishioners worshipping at the Cathedral is a lively community of believers from all over India as well as many from different parts of the world. Anyone visiting the Cathedral will be fascinated by its majesty and spirituality. Built in 1815, this outstanding piece of architecture showcases a towering 45 m spire and ironic columns. Most notable feature of the Cathedral is the graveyard located nearby to it with its guide rail made up of war symbols such as bayonets and muskets.

St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church, South Asia's oldest Anglican English church, is located near the Fort Museum, Chennai. Built in 1680, it is one of the oldest buildings carrying the legacy of British Raj in India. The thick walls of the church, of nearly thickness 5 ft, are supposed to be explosion proof. One can see some price worthy ancient materials in this church. The church adorns a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's superb painting the Last Supper, a bible as old as 1660 AD, some silver plates and a pure silver plaque. St Peters & St Paul Orthodox Chapel


St. Peters & St. Pauls Orthodox chapel is located in Koyambedu, a vibrant and dynamic market place in Chennai. This is one of the oldest and prominent churches in Chennai came into being in 1858. Located at the center of Purasawalkam, Vepery and Choolai areas, the church is located in a place that is renowned for the Karnataka War fought by Tipu Sultan against the British. It is a CSI (Church of South India) church, which holds regular worship services.

St Thomas Orthodox Cathedral


St Thomas Mount Church, also known as St Thomas Orthodox cathedral built in 1523 by the Portuguese, is located near Chennai International Airport. It is situated on a mount or hillock where St Thomas, the missionary, was lost his life and thus the mount was named after him. In between the 14th and 15th centuries, the church fell to ruins and the Portuguese moved the remains of the saint to a new tomb and built a new church. But in 1893, the church was demolished again and a new cathedral was built in 1896. Again, in 1956, the cathedral was raised to the status of a basilica as a tribute to the martyred St Thomas. This is a tourist spot as well as a religious place.

St. Thomas Mount Chruch


St. Thomas Mount Church lies near the Chennai International Airport. Constructed by the Portuguese in 1523, the church lies on the small hillock where St. Thomas, the missionary was assassinated. During 14th and 15th centuries the church fell in ruins which led the Portuguese to move the saints remains to a new tomb and constructed a new church. Subramanya Bharathi Museum


Barathi Memorial Museum, located at Pondicherry Town, was the residence of the great Tamil poet-patriot Subramaniya Bharathi, who arrived Pondicherry in 1908. Subramania Bharati, who lived for a span of 1882 to 1921, was a well-known writer who introduced modernism and distinction in Tamil literature. He has written and has the credit of a number of patriotic and devotional songs. Most of his writings vividly dealt with contemporary social affairs. This Museum displays photographs of the poet, manuscripts, and letters written by him. The museum is open from 09:00-12:30 hrs and 14:0017:45 hrs on all days except Mondays. The Weaver's Centre


The Welfare centers for handloom weavers instituted to promote, advance and facilitate the continuous growth of the handloom industry to compete in the global market are the so-called Weaver Centers. Weavers' Service center in Chennai is one of the first four Centers initially established throughout India in 1956. This center is the Headquarters of the Weavers Service Centers in South Zone. Organizational philosophy is "Friend for guidance and partner in progress through skills & technological up gradation and product development" and this center is the symbol and flagship of the victory of cooperation and sincerity. Theosophical Society
Founded in 1875 by Madame Blavatsky and Col. Olott in USA, Theosophical Society is a worldwide organization whose primary objective is universal brotherhood for the benefit of humanity based on the realization of life, and all its diverse forms. Late in 1882, the society was moved to Adyar in Chennai. The society runs a library, which has a good collection of rare oriental manuscripts written on palm leaves and parchment and these manuscripts have lot of ancestral and archeological value. The library is a good place to have historical knowledge of culture and customs. Thousand Lights Mosque


Thousand Lights Mosque, a multi-domed mosque located near Anna flyover in Chennai built in 19th century in the ground donated by Nawab Wallajah and renovated in 1981, is a revered religious place for Muslim community. It is called 'thousand lights' because more than one thousand lamps are illuminated in the Assembly Hall of this mosque. It has two big minarets as big as 64 feet. The mosque encloses a beautiful library, a burial ground and convenient guesthouses. This multi-domed mosque, with sayings from the Holy Koran painted on its walls, attracts many visitors and comes alive during the annual Moharram festival. Vadapalani Murugan Temple


Vadapalani Murugan (Andavar) Temple is a highly respected shrine situated at Vadapalani, means North Palani, in Chennai and is worth visiting. The temple enshrines Lord Velayudha (Muruga) as the main presiding deity. The wonderful 4 ft sculpture of the presiding deity is spectacular of all eyes. Varasidi Vinayakar Temple


Varasiddhi Vinayakar Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha known by the name Varasiddhi Vinayaka, is located at Besant Nagar in Chennai. Other deities worshipped here include Lord Muruga in the boy stature knwn as Balasubramanyan, Sri Sathyanarayana Perumal, Sri Surya Narayanar, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Gajakesari Lalithambikai and serpent god Nagaraja. Visvaroopa Baktha Anjaneyaar Temple


Visvaroopa Baktha Anjaneyaar Temple is located at Nanganallur, on the outer reaches of Chennai. The temple was consummated the Kumbabishekam in 1995 by Kanchi Paramacharyar and the main deity is a 32 foot idol of Lord Hanuman, or famed as Sri Anjaneyar, believed to have special power and is considered a healer. The main feature and attraction of this 32 feet idol is that it was molded out of a single rock. Other deities worshipped here are Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna with his consorts Bhama and Rukmini, Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and also Lord Raghavendra. Devotees are attracted to this temple on two special days Ekadasi and Amavasi in a month on which days special Abhishekams are performed. It is believed that visiting this temple assures the blessing for better health for devotees.

Wallajah Mosque (Big Mosque)


This Mosque, also known as Big Mosque constructed by Muhammad Ali Walajah, Nawab of the Carnatic during 1749AD to 1795 A.D., is a historical landmark in Chennai. The building is a commanding structure of symmetry and an example of architectural splendor with an impressive facade. The Mosque is placed in widespread grounds, which are being used as a place for religious and cultural functions and activities. The Meelad Committee in the Mosque celebrates the Prophet's birthday every year in these grounds. On Eid-ul-Fitr (Ramzan) and Bakrid Days, huge numbers of Muslim devotees throng to this religiously historic mosque to offer prayers. This is one of the most attractive shrines in Chennai and is one of the main Muslim pilgrimage sites in the south.
