SUMMER TIME IN CHILE

burden alone ... but she is not really alone. The

Hearing the reports of 20 and 30 below zero and lots of snow makes me greatly appreciate the warm summer weather we are presently having. It seems that the winters are getting colder and
colder in the States.

Summer in Chile is usually a period when our work slows down. Most of the people who live in

Santiago try to escape the smog and hustle of the city life for a few weeks of vacation. It makes it almost impossible to continue our home evangelism classes. This summer has not been an ordinary summer for me though.
ILLNESS AT HOME
The first of December I received a call from

my mom and hometown preacher telling me that my father had suffered the second of a series
of stroke-like attacks, and that if I wanted to see

preacher and members of the Lewistown church have cared for my parents as if they were their own parents. I thank God for each of them who have demonstrated their love in such a great way. It's great to be a part of the family of God! On December 27th at 1 a.m. I was sitting in the Miami airport with only one hour left until take-off and I still didn't have my passage confirmed in second-class. A couple of weeks earlier I had finally been able to confirm a 1stclass passage, but since the cost was $300 more one way, I really wanted to get on second-class. Finally a short while before take-off my secondclass passage was confirmed. Praise God. We want to again thank each of you who have helped to pay off the ticket. The ticket has now been paid off, in full, and we are so grateful for the help.
CHRISTMAS GIFT

my father and be recognized I needed to return home as soon as possible. I was able to catch a plane within 4 or 5 days and spent from the 5th to the 26th of December in the States. I praise God that my father lived until I arrived and recognized me. At the present time my dad remains in the military hospital at Helena, but has improved some and is waiting to be transferred back to a
rest home in Lewistown. The doctors told me

that it was very unlikely that he would ever be able to return home. Please pray for him. God is all-powerful and could heal Dad, but He is also
omniscient and therefore knows what is best.

Pray for His will to be done. Pray especially for my mom. I only have one brother, who is presently stationed in Okinawa. That means that as far as family goes, Mom is having to carry the

I arrived back in Chile on the same day with a special Christmas gift for the family.Sara's folks and an aunt came to Chile to spend the month of January with us. We went to the coast and to the southern part of Chile with them, but it was so nice just having them here with us. All the children really enjoyed having Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunt Lois here. I think that after they arrived back in the States in the middle of a snowstorm still wearing their Chilean suntans they wished they had spent a couple of months here instead of just one. One week after they left camp started with 122 present. Sara went to camp with a cold and bad cough, but thought she'd get better. By Wednesday we realized that it was getting

worse, so took her to the doctor and he said she

had pneumonia. She spent the rest of the week in bed and had a series of 13 pencillin shots. She is
fine now.

MISSIONARY ARRIVES

The Craig Woolsey arrived February 23rd and have been staying with us. They have found a nice two-story house which they are in the process of repainting inside. We are now looking

Growth Through Trial
Sometimes we get the idea that if in our work there are problems and difficulties si>mething must be wrong. However, in my Bible reading during the past couple of days God has shown me once again that if all is going smoothly something is wrong. We are at war with powers that oppose God, and should expect to have to fight for any ground that we gain against Satan. Phil Casey and I have been working door-to-door with the course in a new section of town call "Poblaci'on Juan Antonio Rios". It is the largest housing and apartment complex in the country. The Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses have worked there quite a bit, and because of their sometimes offensive attitude toward the people we are finding that many of the people, thinking that we are Mormons, don't want to receive the course. One day 1was able to enroll only five people out of over 90 houses visited, it is frustrating to spend all day having doors shut in your face. I was beginning to consider the possibility that God didn't want us in that area of town, but after thought, prayer and talking it over with Phil,
decided that it could also be Satan who didn't want us in that area. After

becoming top-heavy in bureaucracy so as to maintain our emphasis on evangelism and discipling? Where is the balance between individual
freedom and teamwork?

After much prayer and discussion the team reached these conclusions
and decisions:

persisting we now have .^0 students, some of them very open and interested. One lady told Phil that he was a God-send because the very night before she had been talking about the Bible and her problems, but like the eunich, she had no one to explain the Word to her until Phil appeared. Pray that through effectual labor, God will raise up a new body
of believers in that area.

1) The church in Santiago must be seen as a whole rather than as independent, autonomous congregations. Most of the groups are still in need of guidance and counsel which at this point few of the Chilean leaders have the experience or spiritual maturity to provide. The missionaries must not abandon them until they are strong enough to go and grow. 2) Authority in the church or in the team cannot be legislated or politically achieved. Spiritual authority comes when one man so faithfully ministers to another, during a period of time and in various situations, that the other comes to trust him, his motives, and his wisdom to the point of saying, "Whatever you tell me to do. I II do it." A leader who does not have this kind of confidence from his flock, in reality, does not have spiritual authority. .S) We want to see the LATM team as a part of the Chilean church, not as a separate North American entity. 4) Based on these factors, the following structure was adopted for the
work:

A directive body of men, whose spiritual authority is recognized by the Chilean Church and by the team, was formed. This group will provide direction for the work and provide counsel for problems that cannot be solved on the congregational level.Jeff Myers. Ed Holt, andjorge Ramos, pastiir of the Pudahuel congregation, form this direaive group at this
time.

Progress and Growth in the Chilean Church

The team and the Chilean church has requested that I spend more time, along with Jeff Myers andjorge Ramos in nurturing, teaching, counseling, and in needed cases, discipling of the leaders of the church in Santiago. Since that function will involve alot of our time 1 am including the following article written by Craig Wcxilsey to explain the decision of the

-"For purposes of administration and coordination for both church and team, three positions were formed: Phil Casey, educational coordinator; Roger Kinsey, work coordinator; and Craig Woolsey, administrative
coordinator.

Progress In Team Structure

The week of March II-16 was a special one for theLATM team. All the members of the team working in the Santiago area were able to be together at the campground near the coast for a planning retreat.
The central consideration of the retreat was team structure and team

The response of the congregations here in Santiago and of the leaders to this structure has been extremely positive. Already we are sensing increased confidence and optimism both in the team and in the Church. Pray that the power of the Holy Spirit may be very evident in the work here and that His wisdom will guide our methods.

New Area for Church Industries

During the past month I have been involved in the construction of a metal building to cover the third floor patio of our office building. The 2,000 meter space was not formerly usable, since it was not covered. We are starting several new industries to solve the hunger problem among the poor of the Santiago Churches and will locate the new industries in the new third floor space. I'll probably be involved in this process for another month, but when finished the project will be well worth while. In this way, we can offer the brethren a profit sharing job
situation and not just a hot lunch.

relationship to the Chilean church. Each missionary is supported independently and is under the authority of his sponsoring church in the U.S. As the team has increased in number, there has been an increasing
need for coordination and direction, so that individual members could

indeed function as a team. Several questions needed answers. What kind of

team structure will work best? Should there be a mission executive, and

how much authority would he have to direct the work? How do we avoid

Disciple Formation
Since the church has requested that we spend mure time in discipling those who are leaders in the church, both missionaries and pastors, Jeff, Jorge, and I have had to spend alot of time in that area. Last month I spent 90 hours in personal training of leaders and Sara, working with the wives, is spending about 12 hours a week teaching. (My work is only with the men.) Let me give you an idea how my week goes.

1:00-5:00 - Discipling with Jeff Phillips and Phil Casey 5:00-7:00 - Time with family 7:00-10:00 - Class with Santiago Montero (Deacon in San Joaquin)

Twice a month, seminars and retreats. Twice a month with

family.
Sunday:

10:30-3:00 - EvahgelisnTin "Juan'Antonio Rios"

3:00-5:00 - Write churches

^ Everiings - Church, (Weonlyhavechurch evenings inChile, butinsome

churches that means five nights a week.)

5:00-7:00 - Preparation for personal classes 7:00-9:30 - Special meeting with leaders of "La Feria" church.
Wednesday:
9:00-11:00 - Office and course administration

11:00-1:30 - Personal classes with Carlos Abarca, (Elder in La Legua

2:30-6:00 - Office work and preparation for discipling classes 6:30-10:00 - Personal teaching ofJano Castro & wife(leaders of theSan
Joaquin church)

The formation tif lives by personal discipling is really time consuming, but also exciting because you can observe the day to day changes in the lives, and because Sara is able to participate with me in the teaching by working with the wives. Pray for our work and while you're praying, praise God for the way His power has changed many lives in Chile. We love you because you are our brothers in Christ, and because you have made our ministry to the Chileans possible through your support and prayers. We will soon be seeing you on our furlough from December to February.
