CENTRAL CHILEAN EVANGELISM
MARCH, 1979
Hearing the reports of 20 and 30 below zero and lots of snow makes me greatly appreciate the warm summer weather we are presently having. It seems that the winters are getting colder and
colder in the States.
Summer in Chile is usually a period when our work slows down. Most of the people who live in
Santiago try to escape the smog and hustle of the city life for a few weeks of vacation. It makes it almost impossible to continue our home evangelism classes. This summer has not been an ordinary summer for me though.
ILLNESS AT HOME
The first of December I received a call from
my mom and hometown preacher telling me that my father had suffered the second of a series
of stroke-like attacks, and that if I wanted to see
preacher and members of the Lewistown church have cared for my parents as if they were their own parents. I thank God for each of them who have demonstrated their love in such a great way. It's great to be a part of the family of God! On December 27th at 1 a.m. I was sitting in the Miami airport with only one hour left until take-off and I still didn't have my passage confirmed in second-class. A couple of weeks earlier I had finally been able to confirm a 1stclass passage, but since the cost was $300 more one way, I really wanted to get on second-class. Finally a short while before take-off my secondclass passage was confirmed. Praise God. We want to again thank each of you who have helped to pay off the ticket. The ticket has now been paid off, in full, and we are so grateful for the help.
CHRISTMAS GIFT
my father and be recognized I needed to return home as soon as possible. I was able to catch a plane within 4 or 5 days and spent from the 5th to the 26th of December in the States. I praise God that my father lived until I arrived and recognized me. At the present time my dad remains in the military hospital at Helena, but has improved some and is waiting to be transferred back to a
rest home in Lewistown. The doctors told me
that it was very unlikely that he would ever be able to return home. Please pray for him. God is all-powerful and could heal Dad, but He is also
omniscient and therefore knows what is best.
Pray for His will to be done. Pray especially for my mom. I only have one brother, who is presently stationed in Okinawa. That means that as far as family goes, Mom is having to carry the
I arrived back in Chile on the same day with a special Christmas gift for the family.Sara's folks and an aunt came to Chile to spend the month of January with us. We went to the coast and to the southern part of Chile with them, but it was so nice just having them here with us. All the children really enjoyed having Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunt Lois here. I think that after they arrived back in the States in the middle of a snowstorm still wearing their Chilean suntans they wished they had spent a couple of months here instead of just one. One week after they left camp started with 122 present. Sara went to camp with a cold and bad cough, but thought she'd get better. By Wednesday we realized that it was getting

fine now.
MISSIONARY ARRIVES
The Craig Woolsey arrived February 23rd and have been staying with us. They have found a nice two-story house which they are in the process of repainting inside. We are now looking
for furniture and a school for their children. Our

becoming top-heavy in bureaucracy so as to maintain our emphasis on evangelism and discipling? Where is the balance between individual
freedom and teamwork?
After much prayer and discussion the team reached these conclusions
and decisions:
persisting we now have .^0 students, some of them very open and interested. One lady told Phil that he was a God-send because the very night before she had been talking about the Bible and her problems, but like the eunich, she had no one to explain the Word to her until Phil appeared. Pray that through effectual labor, God will raise up a new body
of believers in that area.
1) The church in Santiago must be seen as a whole rather than as independent, autonomous congregations. Most of the groups are still in need of guidance and counsel which at this point few of the Chilean leaders have the experience or spiritual maturity to provide. The missionaries must not abandon them until they are strong enough to go and grow. 2) Authority in the church or in the team cannot be legislated or politically achieved. Spiritual authority comes when one man so faithfully ministers to another, during a period of time and in various situations, that the other comes to trust him, his motives, and his wisdom to the point of saying, "Whatever you tell me to do. I II do it." A leader who does not have this kind of confidence from his flock, in reality, does not have spiritual authority. .S) We want to see the LATM team as a part of the Chilean church, not as a separate North American entity. 4) Based on these factors, the following structure was adopted for the
work:
A directive body of men, whose spiritual authority is recognized by the Chilean Church and by the team, was formed. This group will provide direction for the work and provide counsel for problems that cannot be solved on the congregational level.Jeff Myers. Ed Holt, andjorge Ramos, pastiir of the Pudahuel congregation, form this direaive group at this
time.
-"For purposes of administration and coordination for both church and team, three positions were formed: Phil Casey, educational coordinator; Roger Kinsey, work coordinator; and Craig Woolsey, administrative
coordinator.
The response of the congregations here in Santiago and of the leaders to this structure has been extremely positive. Already we are sensing increased confidence and optimism both in the team and in the Church. Pray that the power of the Holy Spirit may be very evident in the work here and that His wisdom will guide our methods.

Disciple Formation
Since the church has requested that we spend mure time in discipling those who are leaders in the church, both missionaries and pastors, Jeff, Jorge, and I have had to spend alot of time in that area. Last month I spent 90 hours in personal training of leaders and Sara, working with the wives, is spending about 12 hours a week teaching. (My work is only with the men.) Let me give you an idea how my week goes.

The formation tif lives by personal discipling is really time consuming, but also exciting because you can observe the day to day changes in the lives, and because Sara is able to participate with me in the teaching by working with the wives. Pray for our work and while you're praying, praise God for the way His power has changed many lives in Chile. We love you because you are our brothers in Christ, and because you have made our ministry to the Chileans possible through your support and prayers. We will soon be seeing you on our furlough from December to February.
