70 Years and Counting! by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

This Sunday, July 21st, we will celebrate the 70th birthday of Woodmont Christian Church both on Sunday morning and with a special music festival in the afternoon from 2:00-5:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., we will gather in Drowota Hall for a special video presentation and some words from Mayor Karl Dean. In "The Wonder of Woodmont," Bess White Cochran describes that first gathering at Woodmont School on July 18, 1943: "Summer heat was rising in the humid puffs from the billowy waves of asphalt that paved Estes Road in Nashville after a day of intermittent rain, when a group of approximately one hundred men, women, and children crowded into a sixth grade classroom of Woodmont School at 5 o'clock on the Sunday afternoon of July 18th, 1943. The adults wedged themselves into the seats at the small desks, awkwardly, self-consciously; but despite their positions they were conscious of the significance of the occasion." Cochran goes on to write that, "Dr. Noe, senior minister of Vine Street Christian Church, was present, and preached bidding the group God-speed, asking the blessings of heaven on it. Then Mr. Carpenter read a statement he had prepared embodying what has become a cherished document called "The Covenant," a starkly beautiful expression of commitment. He invited all who wished to embark on the venture of faith to sign it. And in solemn hushed moments, fifty-one persons affixed their names to the following words: THE COVENANT We do hereby solemnly covenant with God and one another to band ourselves together to establish a Christian Church in this community for ourselves and posterity. We pledge our time, substance, talents and prayers to the end that His Church shall be a house of prayer for all people, a fellowship of those who believe in Christ and strive to follow his teachings, and a part of the Church Universal. We aim to erect a suitable edifice for divine worship, for Christian education, for stewardship, for world missions, and to minister to the spiritual needs of the community. All of this. we covenant to be and do under the guidance of God and the leadership of Jesus Christ our Lord. 70 years have passed since that hot July afternoon when the fifty-one founding members of Woodmont Christian Church signed their names on the Covenant that is now in our narthex. Since that time, this church has grown from a hopeful group of men, women, and children gathered on a summer afternoon at Woodmont School to a well-known and established congregation in the heart of Nashville, TN that exists to serve as a "Beacon and A Bridge" in this city and beyond. A towering Spire that is a true landmark in Nashville, was erected lifting high the cross, reminding all of us of the God that we serve and the Lord that we have made a commitment to follow. We have members from all different faith backgrounds and walks of life consistent with Stone-Campbell movement's desire for Christian

unity. Five previous senior ministers (Frank Drowota, Claire Berry, David Moore, Earl Gibbs, and Doug Lofton) have faithfully served this congregation, and I am honored to be the sixth. There have been many gifted associate ministers that have served Woodmont throughout the years providing spiritual leadership and guidance for the ministries of this congregation. There have been numerous board chairs, board members, officers, committee chairs, Sunday School teachers, elders, deacons, lay leaders, volunteers, and faithful members and friends who have been and continue to be an integral part of the church body. Our church has seen multiple building projects, ground-breaking ceremonies, fund-raising events, new ministries, worship opportunities, and social activities. There have been times of joy and times of sorrow, times of rejoicing and times of heartache, times of unity and times of conflict, times of consensus and times of disagreement, times of celebration, and times of mourning. And so many have asked and continue to ask, "What is it that has held Woodmont Christian Church together throughout all of these years of growth and change? What is it that has kept the spirit and wonder of Woodmont alive since its conception in 1943? Bess Cochran answers these questions by saying that: "Woodmont was 'planted' at a moment in history when many people, ravaged by war, cried aloud for reassurance that God was still active in the affairs of human beings. The young church was a symbol of that reassurance, and its message across the years has lived up to its promise. Coupled with the fortuitous timing of its planting, the caliber of the men and women participating played a large part. They were people of standing in the community who could and did attract others. And they 'thought big,' eliminating at the start and forever, the temptation to which many embryo churches succumb to lower their sights. They refused to envision a church on a back street, or one whose visible structure would not compare favorably with any other church in the community. They held to the dictum that 'this one thing I do,' and while the enthusiasm that frequently actuates founding groups at the start was present more important was the determination of the early members and leaders to hold on." How is it that Woodmont has not only survived the past 70 years but has grown and thrived? Certainly, Bess Cochran's words still remain true today, but I would add to her response that the answer to this question is that faith, hope, and the love of God have been the guiding force behind Woodmont. May it continue to be so as we celebrate this 70th milestone and move ahead with faith into the future! Blessings,

Some Summer Thoughts by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer, Minister of Church Life

The Weather
We're in the midst of the interesting weather changes of summer. One day it's an absolutely beautiful day blue skies, sunshine, now and then a gentle summer breeze even. The next day, or even week, it can be gray, dark, cloudy, with rain and thunder and lightning. And while it's been record-breaking heat out west, we've had some great summer weather cooler and rain so far in 2013. I have always been one who enjoys the rain. I even enjoyed a whole week of rain during the 4th of July week. I love to listen to it rain, watch it rain, sit outside (under the carport) and read in the rain, and take walks in the rain. When I was a child I loved the rain and would go to sleep with my window open when it rained. The next morning, my bed would be soaking wet from the rain coming in the window. It's always amazing to me how it can be dark and thunder storming in the morning, or afternoon, but beautiful and sunny the rest of the day. When the sun comes out after a storm (and it's not too humid), it's moments like that which make you so glad just to be alive!

Learn to Live the Present Moment

But one thing I've come to appreciate more than ever is the present moment. Learn to live and enjoy the present moment to the fullest. Drink in everything and everyone around you. Don't get trapped in memories or regrets of yesterday. Don't miss the present moment by focusing too much on your hopes for tomorrow. This is the day God has given us, so we should rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24) And a major part of what makes today so wonderful centers on the people with whom we live, share love, and establish our personal relationships. This is what life is all about at its best! Rain or shine, storms or rainbows, it's our friends who make our world. We should learn to enjoy everyone we're with to the fullest, for who knows if they will be here tomorrow.

Keep Faith Strong

It seems that more than ever before, people today are searching for spiritual strength. Maybe it's because there is a degree of uncertainty beneath the surface of life today. But, hasn't it always been that way? So don't let worries and fears about tomorrow most of which never happen destroy the fullness of today. Keep your faith strong between the peaks and valleys, storms and sunshine of life, so it will be there when you need it the most. That's why regular worship, even during the lazy, hazy days of summer is so important. When we stay in touch with God through faith, we get more out of the present moment. And instead of worrying about the future, we only look forward to it. Sure, we all have our trials and troubles, but God is good and our joys and blessings are so much greater. These are just some thoughts on a July day. ~Roy

Life Itself
And so it is with life itself. One moment it's calm, peaceful, and beautiful. The next moment it can be filled with storms and worries, fears and frustrations. One minute we're on the mountain top of joy; the next, we're in the valley of despair. Tears and laughter, all intertwined. The dark threads and the light threads are all a part of God's tapestry. But there's something good in everything, even the storms of life, if you can develop the "spiritual eyes" to see it. Often it's in the midst of the darkest storm that we can feel God's presence, God's peace and even joy (not happiness, but joy) the most.

Chi Rho Mission Trip to Alabama by Carla Schooler, Minister of Jr. High Youth
Last week I had the opportunity to take an exceptional group of Chi Rho students to Birmingham, AL to work for Christian Service Mission. We were able to serve in a variety of ways. We put our hearts and hands to good use doing yard work, painting, preparing 100 food boxes & over 800 sets of plastic cutlery, passing out fresh vegetables, and serving ice cream to more than 100 children! We also visited the Civil Rights Institute where we learned about the significant role Birmingham played in our country's history. As we made our way back to Nashville we stopped at the Space Center in Huntsville, AL! Fun was had all around! I hope these pictures can convey a small glimpse of the many ways God used our hearts and hands in Birmingham! ~Carla
